The Early Days In 1957, Elvis purchased Graceland, Jackie Robinson retired from baseball, and James R. Cavender opened a little burger joint called Dairy Mart in the small northeast Texas town of Pittsburg. After 8 years in food service, James decided to dip his toe into the entrepreneurial pool by expanding his business interests into retail. In 1965, Cavender’s customers had just three styles of Tony Lama boots to choose from and they were likely to hear the familiar strumming of a Buck Owens song while shopping. Today customers will still hear old classics intermingled with Texas Country. The service and the craftsmanship in the product provided are still ďŹ rst class and there is a whole lot more to choose from when you walk into a Cavender’s store, including hundreds of styles of cowboy boots.

A Family Business Today Cavender’s has become the go-to western wear retailer with a reach spanning eight states. Fortyeight of the 69 stores have roots securely planted in the soil all over the Lone Star State. Cavender’s is still family owned and operated and led by James’ three

sons. Joe, the eldest brother, serves as President of the company, while Mike is VicePresident of Operations, and youngest brother Clay is Vice President of Merchandising. The Cavender’s are always ďŹ rst to credit their success to the dedication and loyalty of their employees. “Our employees work in a team atmosphere, like a family,â€? says Mike. The business model was adopted from their founder and father, whose voice still rings through

the halls of Cavender’s headquarters in Tyler, Texas, half a century later. Their mother, Mrs. Pat, styles and stages each store and no store is complete until it receives her personal touch. She travels to each new location and often, from the top of ladders, adds the charming ďŹ nishing touches to the signature western style. Aside from the operations of the retail giant, the family owns and operates ďŹ ve working ranches throughout Texas and Oklahoma, from which they glean inspiration for their products. Those products include work wear, classic western styles, the latest trends in ladies and men’s fashion, accessories, home dĂŠcor and of course, boots.

The First Fifty Years James provided an excellent model of success and work ethic for his sons to follow. In 1965, when he made the decision to follow his dream, Cavender’s was born and has thrived for 50 years thanks in part to the love and dedication of his children. Here’s to another 50 years of cowboy boots kicking up dust across the great state of Texas. Choose from a huge selection of Western boots, work boots, and casual footwear

Honoring Olivewood brings attention to Houston’s First African American Cemetery, anG eǺorts toZarGs its restoration tKrougK a coOOection of SKotograSKs by .asey FrencK The National Museum of Funeral History is proud to present a new exhibit entitled Honoring Olivewood, featuring a collection of photographs by young Houstonian Kasey French, opening in Janurary. The photographs, taken by French in 2011 when she was only 16 years old, showcase the beauty and reverence of historic Olivewood Cemetery, Houston’s îrst $frican $merican cemetery, which pre-dates the end of slavery.

Since 1875, Olivewood Cemetery, located in a bend of White Oak Bayou just northwest of Downtown Houston where the First and Sixth Wards intersect, is Houston’s îrst incorporated $frican $merican cemetery and is the înal resting place of some of Houston’s îrst $frican $merican citi]ens. Currently, the cemetery is abandoned and in need of care and restoration. Olivewood Cemetery’s long

history began with slave burials, with two of its earliest headstones dating back to 1869 and 1871. In 1875, 10 years after Emancipation arrived for Texas slaves, Richard Brock – Houston’s îrst black alderman – bought the land as a cemetery for black Methodists. The last known marked burial occurred in the 1960s, and a number of Houston’s prominent $frican $mericans citi]ens are buried in Olivewood. In 2004, after years of neglect, the Descendants of Olivewood, Inc., began its eǺorts to restore, preserve, and maintain the cemetery and the Texas Historical Commission granted the cemetery a Texas Historic Cemetery designation in 2005. Entrance into the Honoring Olivewood exhibit at the National Museum of Funeral History is included in the price of general admission

to the museum. Tickets are available online at www.nmǿ. org or on-site at the National Museum of Funeral History, located at 415 Barren Springs Dr., Houston, TX 77090. For more information, visit www. nmǿ.org or call 281.876. 06 .

FIELD OF LIGHT at DISCOVERY GREEN December 10, 2015 February 21, 2016 1500 McKinney St. Houston, TX 77010 Discovery Green is proud to host Field of Light, a dazzling art installation by internationally-acclaimed artist Bruce Munro. The vivid, temporary, site specific installation will be on display along the Brown Promenade. Experience Field of Light through free

performances by Houston artists created especially for this magnificent work of art. Munro originally conceived the idea for Field of Light in 1992 during a trip through the red desert of central Australia, when he sketched a landscape of illuminated stems that would wait like dormant seeds in a dry desert, to bloom at night. The idea remained in his sketchbook until 2004,

when he finally had space and resources to execute it. It has since been specifically reimagined for sites across the globe. The Field of Light at Discovery Green comprises 4,500 radiant, frosted glass spheres atop slender stems connected by

illuminated fiber optic. The spheres and stems wait quietly until dusk and then bloom with gentle rhythms of colored light as darkness falls over the park.

after dark

WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN, HOUSTON REALLY HEATS UP. FROM THE BRIGHT LIGHTS OF THE STAGE TO THE LOW LIGHTS OF A DANCE CLUB, THE CITY IS ALIVE WITH MUSIC, LAUGHTER AND EXCITEMENT ALL NIGHT LONG. Jack Doyle, aka “The Gorgeous Gael”, was a young man who left Ireland and became a household name as a heavyweight boxing contender, an actor, and a beautiful tenor on both sides of the Atlantic. In honour of his name, Peter Kingston & David Roche (also from Co Cork in Ireland), came together to bring a new concept of an Irish bar to America – a sharper, edgier, brighter design with a strong emphasis on exceptional food, exquisite cocktails, a strong Whiskey oering and a fantastic array of domestic and crafted beers. The Gorgeous Gael represents everything that is truly great about modern Irish entertainment culture – premium customer service, exceptionally creative, top quality food, adventurous, sophisticated drinks and the best musical entertainment in the world. One thing that has not changed is the Irish spirit of hospitality, and the friendship and camaraderie that is unique to the Irish pub environment.

Richmond Arms is a lively, oldfashioned pub, complete with seasonal brews, too many beers on tap to count and a bevy of Celtic accents ringing throughout the establishment. Even during the week, an evening here feels like an Irish beer advertisement, “Lots of British nationals” feel at home in this “authentic” Briargrove area pub that some claim is the closest thing to England “this side of the big pond”; “wood beams and red accents” and a “friendly sta” greet “serious game fans”, who come for the “great beer selection” and pub grub, plus darts and regular trivia nights.

With over 9,000 sq-ft of elegant event space, and a private parking lot, Hughes Hangar is Houston’s preferred venue to host all event platforms. Let us host your next significant event, 832-704-8964 2811 Washington Ave (713) 239-0060 www.hugheshangar.com
