WORDS FROM THE EDITOR
A New Year’s New Challenges on some rocky turf, but may you recover and continue on the road to greatness.
Barking Bram with Bram D. Eisenthal So, with a New Year, it seems, came a new set of problems… starting with Vanessa, our much-ballyhooed new layout artist (ballyhooed by me, her old business associate), who had to step aside for personal reasons. This very-much-unexpected loss resulted in two missed issues as we scrambled to find a new person to lay out this unique and (we think) beautiful paper. We hope you come as advertised, Emma. Good luck! Emma is a student at McGill University and we did pretty well with James, our last one… so we know you can do it! Then came recent news that Quebec Agriculture Minister Pierre Paradis, who handled the animal welfare portfolio as well, had been fired from cabinet by his Liberal Premier, for, of all things, sexual harassment. I admit we are not shedding any crocodile tears for Paradis, as this man did nothing at all to as much as communicate with us and we stopped just short of organizing a protest rally. We hope his replacement is more forthcoming and we will keep you posted. And THEN we made a new friend in the Space Biz and we will be most excited to bring you news about his work very soon. But first, we bring you a terrific cover story on a new
product courtesy of a key advertiser and his new line, organized by Chuck Altman, of Little Bear of Westmount, and his partners. Read up… the Pup Parcel is a great concept., one that you and your pet companion will adore! Also, a special good wish to my longtime buddy Cherif / Sherif, who is suffering due to the loss of his beloved Maltese, Fluffy, a little over a few months ago. Until Precious Pets, I simply did not “get it,” regarding how much we love our pets and how badly we suffer when they cross the Rainbow Bridge. I do now. Cherif wrote something very special for his “little boy” and we are pleased to bring it to you within these pages…. RIP Fluff!
Happy Belated Holidays to you and yours, from the staff and advertisers of Precious Pets!
Note that this issue we were planning to bring you our annual Holiday Gift Guide, but we then realized that every publisher does this and we will therefore save this guide for an issue not far down the road. The next issue will also feature a story that will blow you away by how “out there” it is… I promise it’s going to be a good one! And to us here in Canada, may we all survive newly-elected U.S. President Donald Trump. I hope he turns out to be one of the better political leaders we have ever seen. President Trump, it’s up to you, Sir. You have started

We at Precious Pets have always endeavoured to bring you, our readers, the very best in products and services. We will simply not recommend anyone we know to not be the best. Little Bear is located at 4152 Ste. Catherine West in Westmount, Tel: 514-935-3425
This monthly subscription service is truly something that deserves to be on the gift list of anyone you care about. Since we are delaying our gift guide a few issues, this is our major gift recommendation to you this New Year season. It’s obvious that the dogs posing on our cover, Chuck’s dogs in fact, are not the least bit unhappy. Pup Parcel is doing so well that a significant percent of the store’s business now consists of Pup Parcel orders, which are filled exclusively as they come in. Very few are alike.

TRAVEL
Cape May (New Jersey) is a pet friendly destination by:
Mike Cohen
CAPE MAY, NEW JERSEY- Fine wines, outstanding restaurants, classic jazz festivals and special events … year ‘round. Some things just get better with age, and charming Cape May, New Jersey is no exception. This historic Victorian seaside gem is the oldest resort and one of the most beautiful spots in the country. The entire city is a National Historic District, with nearly 600 well-preserved Victorian buildings. Cape May is a mere 20 minute drive from Wildwood. Cape May is a great destination if you like to vacation with your pets, but take note that the city’s beaches are not pet friendly in season, and the Lower Township beaches along the Delaware Bay are the only beaches which are dog-friendly all year. Why, however, leave your pet at home? A family vacation need not be without the most important member of the family. Be it a guest house or hotel, Cape May has a nice selection of Pet Friendly places to stay. Mind the rules though, almost all Pet Friendly Accommodations take dogs, some take cats and dogs. Many have restrictions regarding the weight of the dog and the number of pets which can be accommodated, so call and enquire before you assume anything. Dogs are permitted only during the months of November through March. They must be kept on a leash at all times and be accompanied by their owner or caretaker. The owner or caretaker shall carry a dog waste disposal device. Any owner or caretaker of a dog who permits a pet to leave itswaste on the Boardwalk, Promenade or beach without disposing of same shall be subject to penalties. A baggy sooner can prevent a lot of anguish later. You can read more at http://www. capemay.com/petfriendlycapemay.html#ixzz4FIUtukFq

The Cape Resorts In terms of places to stay, the Cape Resorts (http://www.caperesorts.com) offer everything you can ask for and more. Each of this group’s hotels has its own deeply individual personality. That translates into beautiful settings, approachable design, an array of wonderful dining options, plus fun activities from sunrise till evening. There is Congress Hall, The Virginia, The Virginia Cottages, Beach Shack, Sandpiper Beach Club, The Star and Barons Cove Sag Harbor. All of the hotels and restaurants are serviced by Cape Resorts’ very own 62-acre Beach Plum Farm, located about one mile from the properties. The farm provides the restaurants and hotels with fresh eggs, produce, flowers, pork, herbs and more. We chose Congress Hall to experience Cape May. This is both Cape May’s and America’s oldest seaside resort. The hotel is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. We booked a fabulous beach tent for three. After purchasing our beach pass, we were escorted to our tent. Staff helped us set up in this utopian location on the gorgeous beach, just steps from the water. For the ultimate experience in relaxation, rent one beach tent and learn firsthand just how good a perfect day at
the beach can be. When you get thirsty, someone will bring you a bottle of ice-cold water. Order a tall, iced, refreshing lemonade or fruit smoothie for the perfect summertime treat. Since these beach tents have a reputation for their relaxing qualities, they are very popular and are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis for either a full or half day. These rentals include: Two lounge chairs (we requested three), plush beach towels, a cooler filled with water, soda, and iced tea (Congress Hall and Virginia Beach Tents only) and table and food service. In addition, we got three chairs and two umbrellas and a few more towels placed just in front of our tent. This was the perfect place for us to sit when we initially returned from our numerous trips to the ocean. The water was quite warm in July, a real bonus compared to the chilly temperatures we experienced in past days, in places like Cape Cod and Maine.
Dining Out We had the opportunity to enjoy two nice meals at the Cape Resorts. Following our day at the beach, we took a five-minute walk to the dog friendly

Rusty Nail Bar and Grill, located at the Beach Shack, for a really fun dinner. It represented a fabulously relaxing backdrop in which to dine during a warm summer’s evening. We were seated at a table near the bar. With live music, a fire pit, weekly pig roasts, shuffleboard and sand bar, The Rusty Nail is an authentic and cool beachside hangout. The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and is located at 205 Beach Avenue. It even holds an annual dog pageant each September and offers a dog menu. This is a laid-back beach restaurant, so worry not one iota about attire. We started off with some drinks: Thirst quenching pina coladas and a Rusty Rum Runner, a tropical blend of pineapple, orange and mango juice, banana liqueur and Bermuda rum. The following evening we returned to Congress Hall for dinner at the Blue Pig Tavern (http:// www.caperesorts.com/restaurants/capemay/bluepigtavern). Its name derives from a gambling parlour situated in Congress Hall in the mid-1800s. After some drinks, we shared the Raw Bar Sampler. It consisted of six oysters and six clam claws, with a few dipping sauce choices. We next ordered some salads- a red and yellow endive and another called Beach Plum Farm Greens. The former consisted of farm lettuce, crisp endive, walnuts and apples, doused in roasted shallot vinaigrette. As for the latter it contained tender beach plum farm lettuce, also tossed with the same vinaigrette.
ED. NOTE: Mike Cohen continues to find neighbouring pet-friendly destinations for Precious Pets. Thanks, Mike!

ASK THE DOCTOR
they call me dr. w
Taking care of Kitty by:
Dr. Wybranowski, B.SC. DVM CCRT
The number of households owning pets in North America has been steadily decreasing, and more importantly people have moved from large dogs to small dogs and cats. Presently in Canada cats outnumber dogs: 7.9 million to 5.9 million. Cat owners often own more than one cat at a time. For many decades I was exclusively a dog owner. During that time I used to think that cats were not equal to dogs as pets. Then I became a cat owner, as well, and, after living with feline companions for many years now, I know that cats are not equal: Rather they are completely different and unique and cannot be compared. Dogs live for their owner and are slaves to his wishes; cats live for themselves and allow you into their lives when it suits them. I do not mean this in any derogatory way: It’s just that cats are not small dogs. Both cats and dogs became domesticated by man not so long ago – only about 15,000 years. Whereas wild dogs live in packs and hunt together, most wild cats live solitarily (with the exception of lions). In the domestic cat only mother-daughter individuals stay together - males move away and only come back to reproduce. It is true that domestication in cats has modified somewhat their behaviour. Domestic cats need shelter and food, socialization and interaction, but they do need their solitary times as well. They are not as emotionally dependant as dogs are on their owners. It is probably because of this instinctive “individualistic” trait that cats are excellent actors; they hide their emotions very well. Cats remain extremely cautious and suspicious, a characteristic that has let a small predator like a cat survive extinction. Evolution taught cats to hide weakness or become prey. From here probably comes the common harmful misconception that cats are so independent they do not need to go to see
the doctor, mainly because they can take care of themselves. Although the number of cats in North America is increasing, the number of cat visits to the doctor is decreasing. This is an alarming statistic, because it means that cats do not get the medical care they deserve. Furthermore, if you have ever taken your cat to the vet before, you know that it is not an experience both of you cherish. Cats in general hate traveling, being locked up in a cage and being put onto a cold exam table
to be manhandled by a stranger. The American Association of Feline Practitioners wants to teach both veterinarians and cat owners about proper cat care and how to do it in ways that would be the least traumatic for the little felines. Veterinarians and behaviourists came up with guidelines and ideas on how to improve cat care. Veterinary hospitals that comply with these new rules can become a “Cat Friendly Practice (or CFP).”
A CFP does many things to decrease the stress your furry friend can experience during a visit. These start from housecalls to avoid all travel, then move on to separate waiting and exam rooms in order to avoid smelling or hearing dogs or even other cats…. As well as gentle handling techniques, pheromones that naturally decrease stress and examination techniques more adapted to this gentler species. So keep in mind that cats are not small dogs! They hide their emotions and symptoms very, very well and they do deserve to see the vet at least once or twice a year depending on their age. A Cat Friendly Practice is a good way to start. Today there are only 12 clinics out of almost 800 in Quebec that have attained this “Cat Friendly Practice” status and I am very proud to say that Animal 911 Veterinary Hospital has achieved the highest Gold Status distinction, so we can help your kitty stay healthy longer! ED. NOTE: VERY interesting, Dr. W. I had no idea!

OBITUARY
In praise of My Youthful Angel, Fluffy by:
Sherif Farag
Monday November 7, 2016, was the worst day of my adult life. I lost my best friend and, along with My Boy, what was left of my heart and soul, with the passing of my beloved Fluffy. It was a passing that wasn’t supposed to happen this fast, regardless of his totally sudden, severe medical condition … and I was totally unprepared for this horrible loss. Fluffy was the youngest 14 yr old, as his pics show. His kindred spirit and his zest for life was contagious to all who had the joy of meeting him. All whom he met, whether friends or even strangers, loved his energy, spirit, youthfulness and his presence. He brought a smile to all instantly. He loved to walk, run , explore and, most of all, be with his Daddy, in the car or anywhere as long as we were together . Whether in the park or any other public place , people would comment on how beautiful he was and also on his great big eyes and how youthful he looked , right till the end Fluffy was a pure Maltese, of noble ancient lineage, and his energy and spirit were certainly unique to me. I always felt bad when I saw other, older pets struggling to walk and having medical procedures such as tooth extractions at young ages, for example 10-12. All the vets loved him and were amazed he had all his teeth… without any cavities! How many humans have no cavities at age 98? Actually, Fluffy never gave me any problems. He never had any medical issues, was never a nuisance in the home or in public and he loved me unconditionally….even though he was a real Alpha male by any definition. All his misfortune happened to him in his final four months of life, without warning .

We were two against the world the last few years and now I’m alone and empty. Rest in peace My Boy. You will forever be engraved in my heart and soul and we will surely meet again. Sherif Farag EDITOR’S NOTE: Sherif – actually Cherif – is one of my oldest, dearest friends and is an amazing human being with an unbelievable capacity for caring. I have rarely known another person who has endured as much sorrow as he has the past few years… yet Fluffy helped him get through it. Don’t worry, my old friend, you are far from alone. You have good friends and a brother and family who care deeply for you. And the devotion you showed Fluffy will come back to you some day. As a matter of fact, I have no doubt that he is advocating for you at this very moment. Rest in Peace, Fluffy!
Since he departed this life – and I have no doubt whatsoever that he is still with me somewhere - I am devastated to the core by his passing, The very best times I ever had in my life were simple ones, just walking with him or being together anywhere, any time. He was the sunshine I woke up to even in the darkest of days.. I have lost some very serious things in my life, such as my parents, my home, my marriage to a woman I loved, a business etc., and with every life hit I’ve endured during the past few years, Fluffy was the only one that motivated me to fight andpersevere with his unconditional love and purity. To me he was the child I never had, my Guardian Angel, sent by God to help me on a very tough journey. He made it so much more tolerable and loving. We fully depended on each other.
Some may feel I’m wrong in saying that I loved him more than anyone ever in my life But I know that we shared a spiritual bond and trust that I never even experienced with other loved ones of the past.

A Small Gem for Collectors Like Me by:
Bram Eisenthal
I am an avid collector. Some may consider me a hoarder, because I have a real problem getting rid of stuff, such as old LP records, objects from my childhood, general collectibles and autographed items from movies I have worked on, etc. I am not a hoarder you would find on that TV show, Hoarders, my apartment filled to the rafters with horrible smells, inches-thick dust and boundless clutter. But this new book, The Savvy Appraiser – Collect, Value, Divest, by Elizabeth Stewart, Ph.D., is really interesting if you share this mentality with me. Many of us do, in fact. Ms. Stewart is an “expert,” a Certified Member of the AAA, the Appraisers Association of America. In this not-too-wieldy tome, she shares her ideas about which items are valuable and what to collect if you wish to profit some day. And in this New Year, what a great time to divest and create some room in your apartment or condo. Why not make some money at the same time? Let me state quite succinctly that I did not like this book at first. As a diehard collector of everything, I expected a guide, with prices on various things assembled into categories. The problem with that is, when you collect anything potentially, such a book would be at least 1,000 pages in length. So I relaxed first and delved into a book that explains collecting using a series of stories and biographical information. For instance, you have heard of Remington prints, but Stewart examines what a Remington is, how much it might land you and informs you about the printing process. She actually looks into printing and painting techniques in layman’s terms.
For instance, the original Remington prints were often rendered as chromolithographs, an early process of reproduction. Remington became famous for “publishing portfolios of images he’d either drawn or painted previously.” This enables you to score a few thousand dollars for an early Remington pint. You may not get a few hundred thousand dollars that would enable you to take some serious time off work, but you’ll get value for your savvy investment nonetheless. Stewart’s chapters are fascinating and very informative. There is a lot more on various paintings (the book is heavy on art, so if this bores you, don’t buy it), but also fun facts about space age collectibles, games, Christmas collectibles, dolls, cast-iron toys, books, couture, antiquities, carvings, jewelry, curiosities (like two fingers that really belonged to early astronomer and accused heretic Galileo!) and a whole lot more.
In the press material sent to me was a quote I liked: “If you need to downsize (like most of us), learn to do it like a savvy appraiser. Elizabeth explains how to look for clues to authenticity, determine origin and provenance, and understand today’s market. You’ll enjoy her true tales of wise, regret-free divesting,” promised Simon Rycroft, director of the Santa Barbara Historical Arms Association. For someone like me, drowning in collectibles that may or may not have any value, this is a very useful book. I can’t wait to value one man’s garbage…. who knows, huh?
