On Behalf of Express Ranches, Welcome… Welcome to the Seventh Express Ranches New Mexico Bull Sale to be held at the Cuervo Creek Ranch, Newkirk, New Mexico. These bulls have been developed on high roughage diet in the semiarid terrain of New Mexico at 5,000-ft. elevation. These bulls are stout, full of muscle and ready to go to work. They will get out and travel the country and have the disposition which cattlemen demand. Also the bulls have been HD50K tested to give you more confidence in your buying decisions. We want to give a special thanks to Mark Whetten, his family and the crew from the Cuervo Creek Ranch for their excellent care and development of this great set of bulls. We guarantee that all bulls sold by Express Ranches are fertile to the best of our knowledge and have passed a Breeding Soundness Exam 30 to 45 days prior to the sale. Although all bulls have passed a BSE, we know certain problems can arise after you receive your purchase. To help ensure your investment, Express Ranches will guarantee all bulls selling against breeding injury, and to be sound breeders for the first breeding season. Breeding season is defined as the 90-day period following the first turnout of the bulls. We will provide you with a satisfactory replacement, if available, or issue you a credit equal to the bull’s purchase price minus the salvage value received for that bull. This is not a life insurance policy however. We will not replace a dead animal if it is killed or dies for any reason.

The more cow-calf producers know about the bulls they buy, the more they can take advantage of the genetic forces — selection and mating — that drive the productivity and value of each calf-crop. With genomic - enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) and percent ranks powered by High-Density (HD) 50K from Zoetis, commercial users of Express genetics can unlock the power of these forces like never before.

The value of HD 50K

HD 50K for Angus includes genetic predictions in the form of percent ranks for 19 traits plus parentage verification. For most of these traits, Angus Genetics, Inc. (AGI), computes and reports weekly GE-EPDs powered by HD 50K, which are the most accurate genetic predictions possible for young bulls with limited or no progeny. The resulting EPD accuracy is generally equivalent to tested bulls having an initial progeny proof of roughly a dozen calves/carcasses/daughters with performance data contributing to their EPDs (ranges from six to 22 progeny, depending upon the trait — Table 1). Increasingly, Angus bull buyers are demanding tested bulls (Figure 1).

HD 50K percent ranks, interpretation for Non-GE-EPD traits

HD 50K percent ranks from Zoetis are currently based on a reference population of more than 15,000 tested Angus animals. Ranks range from 1 to 100, with lower numbers generally favored for most traits (Table 1). Some traits for which HD 50K percent ranks are available do not yet have GE-EPDs. These include ranks for heifer pregnancy (HP), residual feed intake (RFI) and end-product tenderness (Tend). Zoetis validation of HD 50K percent ranks for HP indicate that genomic predictions explain just more than one-third of the variation in HP EPDs. Percent ranks for RFI provide Angus bull buyers with added feed efficiency information, while ranks for Tend explain more than one-fourth of the differences in this component of eating satisfaction.

Selection — Better bull buying for specific purposes

Higher-accuracy GE-EPDs and more complete trait information from HD 50K percent ranks help Angus bull buyers more dependably select bulls for specific purposes, including: • Heifer bulls — GE-EPDs for calving ease direct (CED) and birth weight (BW) have accuracies roughly equivalent to bulls with 21 and 11 progeny, respectively, with calving ease and birth weight data recorded. • Growth/carcass bulls — GE-EPDs for growth (WW & YW), feed efficiency (RADG) and carcass merit (CW, Marb, RE, Fat) have accuracies that are basically equal to bulls having 20, 10 and 10 progeny/carcasses, respectively, with performance data recorded. • Maternal bulls for making replacements — GE-EPDs for scrotal circumference (SC), docility (Doc), milk and mature size (YH and MW) deliver the rough equivalent accuracy of bulls having 10 daughters with performance/productivity information recorded for these traits. Percent ranks from HD 50K for heifer pregnancy (HP) and calving ease maternal (CEM) provide information for these important maternal traits. • All-purpose bulls — Across all applicable traits, GE-EPDs powered by HD 50K have accuracies that are approximately equal to bulls with a dozen progeny/carcasses/daughters with recorded performance.

Mating

Besides selection, mating is the other genetic force that drives production. More accurately evaluated bulls may be more strategically matched with sets of females to accentuate strengths and correct weaknesses — creating more valuable progeny, carcasses and replacements. This is especially true if commercial Angus females are tested with GeneMax™ and genetic information for gain, quality grade and assigned Angus sire are used for selection and mating (see www.genomexchange.com). As well, HD 50K-verified parentage improves the accuracy of EPDs and the precision with which commercial producers can minimize inbreeding. It also reliably documents relationships to tested sires and dams that are proven to be free of known genetic conditions.

Summary

Angus bulls with more accurate and complete GE-EPDs powered by HD 50K from Zoetis can more dependably be selected and matched with females for specific purposes to produce progeny with increased productivity. Maternal EPDs

Expected Progeny Difference (EPD),

is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

Calving Ease Direct (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

CARCASS...

The genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, Ribeye area and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis. Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of

the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

MATERNAL...

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

$VALUE INDEXES...

$Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

FOR THE ZOETIS HD 50K for Angus percentile rankings,

a lower value indicates a more favorable ranking for the trait. For example, a smaller numeric percentile ranking for Zoetis result in birth weight and carcass fat indicates lighter calves and leaner carcasses as the expectation. If you are making selection decisions for traits that have an EPD provided by the Association, then the EPDs should be considered the selection tool of choice. The EPD and accuracy account for all sources of information available on the animal of interest (e.g., pedigree, own record, weights/measures, genomic results). Using EPD and genomic percentiles separately leads to double counting information and will lessen selection efficiency.
