THE PINNACLE SALE
Terms of sale are cash unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been established. All settlements are to be made with the clerks of the sale immediately following the conclusion of the sale and before any cattle will be released from the sale premises.
HANDLING RISKS… Each animal will be at Purchaser’s risk as soon as sold, but loading assistance will be provided after settlement has been made. Each animal will be fed, watered and cared for at Purchaser’s risk for a reasonable time to allow for removal to Purchaser’s farm.
RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS… In the event of default in any part of the Terms and Conditions covering this sale by either the Buyer, or the Seller, it shall be the responsibility of the Buyer or the Seller, to instigate any action necessary to bring about a fair settlement of any claims arising from this sale and to be responsible for any and all cost involved therein. The sale manager assumes no responsibility, legal or otherwise, for the failure of either Seller or Buyer to fulfill his obligation. All persons who attend this sale do so at their own risk. Historically, when one mentions Aberdeen Angus cattle, the color “Black” automatically comes to mind. However, ‘Red” animals have appeared since the earliest days of the breed. According to Lloyd Pickard, writing in the 1985 Canadian Angus History Update, Red females were eligible for registry in the Canadian herdbook until 1921, though Red males were not. In 1921, the by-law was changed to read “an animal red in color, shall not be eligible for registry,” This state persisted until 1968, when there was interest in uniting the Red and Black Angus into one Herdbook in Canada. The change was made April 3, 1968, with the stipulation that “Red” precede the herd prefix in naming Red Angus cattle registered in Canada. In the beginning, Canadian-born Red Angus could not fill the demand, and cattle were imported from the United States, where there are two associations, the American Angus Association, and the Red Angus Association of America founded in 1954. Animals registered in the Red Angus Association were eligible for registry in the Canadian Association. In the early 1960s an interest in using and raising Red Angus cattle was growing in Southern Alberta. The MacKinnon Ranch of Bassano, was credited with importing the first Red Angus bulls from the U.S. The Mackenzie family of Mountain View, Alberta, and Gary Conrad of Fort Macleod were credited with importing both females and bulls to start their purebred Red Angus herds. Over the subsequent 5-10 years other breeders across the country started to put together their herds. In the fall of 1972, a group of four new Red Angus breeders, at Millarville, Alberta, held a field day, to showcase their animals, and offer information on the breed. These breeders were David Glaister, Mike Rogers, David Wildman and Earl Watson with Valley Cattle Co. It was felt at that time, that promotion was a priority, in order to advance the breed. To that end, a meeting was held, and the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society was born. Twelve breeders present that day, are considered the founding members. Of those 12, 45 years later, five are still operating as purebred operations. THE PINNACLE SALE
Many of the first purebred Red Angus breeders came from a commercial cattle background. As such, they were performance oriented. Long before EPDs entered the picture, many of these herds were enroll ed in the Canadian Record of Performance program. From this, bull tests evolved, with the Red Angus Breeders of Canada bull test and sale, based out of Millarville, AB, enjoying much success for several years. The Red bulls were very popular and many breeders held their own bull sales for years and continue to this day. This year, 2017, marks the 45th Red Roundup Sale, sponsored by the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society. The first sale was held in Innisfail, Alberta, in 1973 and it is the longest running Angus sale in Alberta. There were 46 lots, averaging $1,408. A decision was made early on to make this a select sale, with breeders opening their herd to the selector. Over the years, this process has resulted in a highly successful sale. For the 40th Anniversary of the Red Roundup, a video presentation was commissioned by the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society to document the history of the group. Founding members were interviewed, where possible, to record their recollections and memories. Because this group has always had members from across Canada, it could not be a registered society. So, in fact, it has no official standing. The Canadian Association has recognized it for a long time, and treated it much the same as a Provincial Association. The Mackenzie families of Mountainview, Alberta, were one of the first breeders of Red Angus in Canada. At the famed Calgary Bull Sale in 1971, they showed Red Stormalong 3A to Grand Champion honors, and sold him for the high price of $7,200. This was a first for the Red cattle, and marked a change in traditional thinking within the Angus breed. In 1974, Southholm Angus at Coaldale, Alberta, sold an outcross bull, Red Emulous 69D, for the record price of $15,000 at the Calgary Bull Sale. The value of a red calf from black parents, was finally recognized. Outcross Red cattle continue to be of value to the breed and enhance the genetic base for those breeders that breed predominantly Red Angus. In Canada, throughout the ’60s and ’70s, Red and Black cattle were shown together. As numbers of breeders and cattle increased, there was interest in splitting into separate shows. The first Canadian National Red Angus show was held in Lloydminster in 1982. This was an exciting time for Red breeders as they now had a show to call their own. Within 10 years Red shows were being held at Farmfair, Agribition, and various other Provincial Gold shows across the country. Without the continued good work of the Promotion Society these changes would not have come about. Red Angus breeders quickl y became involved in the Canadian Angus Association. Don Mackenzie, Mountainview, AB, served as a director on the board from 1978-1980. Dave Wildman, Sangudo, AB, served two terms on the board, and was the first Red breeder to become President of the association. He has been followed by other Red breeders in the Chair including: Barney Creech, Don Mackenzie, Kirk Wildman, Kevin Blair, Corrinne Gibson, David Sibbald, and current President, Brett Wildman. The Red side of the Canadian Angus breed has grown by leaps and bounds over the years with breeders coming from other breeds as well as the commercial sector. Canadian Red Angus are known throughout the world for their quality and have been exported to all corners of the globe. When the Promotion Society was formed 45 years ago, the sole mission was to promote the breed. The mission has been accomplished, and Red Angus are recognized across the country, and have become an integral part of the Canadian Angus Association.

Red Towaw Lakima 407D is an attractive made, deep ribbed brood cow in the making. She will lay down a beautiful udder and represents a productive and time-tested cow family at Towaw. Her sire, Calidad 130Y, is a result of a direct Argentine imported embryo and has done a great job at Towaw. He is now a Semex International sire and will be seeing heavy use around the world. His sons are easy-fleshing and full of muscle and have been very popular in our Annual Bull Sale. His daughters are tremendous with extra depth of body, femininity and really strong udders. Her dam, Lakima 403A, was shown as a yearling by our French intern, Pierre, and is a direct daughter of the great Canadian black bull, HF Tiger 5T. Red CCC Towaw Larkaba 530C is dark red, deep bodied, long and feminine with a nice udder. Her maternal grandsire, Red TerRon Digger 11L, was a direct son of the great Ter-Ron Brandy 11C cow, and is the grand sire of the $80,000 Red Cockburn Ribeye bull. He bred until he was 11 years old and was one of the soundest structured bulls ever used at Towaw. His milk EPD is a bit of a mystery as we had many good-milking, productive daughters in our herd. This daughter of our Larkaba cow family traces back to a Boomer daughter we purchased from Triple S in the 1997 Red Roundup Sale. She also traces back to the Emulous 69D bull that was a high seller at the Calgary Bull Sale in 1974. Her grandam, Larkaba 10M, is a direct Red Towaw Indeed 104H daughter, that was flushed for Argentina and then sold to Wildcat Creek for their flush program. She was one of Kent McCune’s favorite cows when he was working at Wildcat.
