South Dakota Limousin Association Hosts Meetings on NALF Alignment with Tyson
T
he South Dakota Limousin Association (SDLA) held two meetings Tuesday, September 29, 2015, in Mitchell and Ft. Pierre, South Dakota. Mark Anderson, NALF Executive Vice President, presented information concerning the alliance with the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) and Tyson Fresh Meats. The first meeting, hosted by Curt and Leanne Wiezcorek of Mount Vernon, took place in Mitchell, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Cattlemen’s Club. Guests were treated to a complimentary steak dinner following the presentation. The second meeting, hosted by the SDLA, was held at the Casey Tibbs
Center in Ft. Pierre. The program started at 4:00 p.m. followed by a free, catered roast beef dinner. Both meetings were well attended by seedstock and commercial producers alike. Mark Anderson explained the new opportunity that NALF has entered into with Tyson Fresh Meats. The program offers commercial cattle producers and cattle feeders the ability to market cattle through existing branded programs that Tyson is currently marketing today. Producers can elect to market cattle into the Global Animal Partnership (GAP), the Open Prairie Natural by affidavit, NHTC (Non-Hormone Treated cattle), or the Lim-Choice conventional fed cattle grid with Tyson.
NALF already has members feeding a substantial number of cattle successfully in these programs on an annual basis. NALF’s goal is to qualify more cattle that are eligible for these premium programs by identifying commercial operations that incorporate Limousin genetics into their breeding programs. Tyson firmly believes in the heterosis advantages the Limousin breed provides. NALF will also be looking to identify and qualify additional feed yards that want to

Continued from front cover participate in these programs. Pounds still matter, however the feedyards need cattle that can do it all. They pay for pounds, yield grade and quality. Feed efficiency and conversion rates remain a critical component of cattle that work well in today’s market. By utilizing good genetics, Limousin cattle can “do it all.”
Depending on market prices, premiums will adjust every 90 days, but once a herd has qualified, premiums will be guaranteed. Present day premiums for this quarter are GAP $275, Regular Natural $225, and NHTC $165. Commodity cattle that qualify as natural, but not Limousin-crossed Black or Red Angus, will be expected to hit at least 65% choice to receive a

premium. Those premiums will not be the same as the premiums listed above. These programs will give Limousin seedstock producers the ability to attract more commercial buyers to utilize their genetics, particularly into natural programs where the heterosis advantage of using Limousin bulls crossed onto straight Angus and Red Angus cows become apparent. This cross will ultimately capitalize on advantages in yield grade, efficiency and increased cutability while still being able to hit the Choice quality

grade. The advantages gained by using Limousin genetics in this terminal cross will be valuable to the producers, feed yard, and packers where the effect on implants and beta antagonist are negated and the cattle have to solely rely on their genetic merit. There are specific requirements in qualifying for these programs involving verification and acceptance by Tyson. Anderson told the group that paperwork pays. For more information contact Mark Anderson at NALF.

some not. This year is no exception. The opening of the import market bringing foreign beef into America has had an impact on market prices. World fluctuation on economies and money markets have had another impact on exports. Our supply of beef has risen, though it remains to be seen how much and the price of all agricultural products has dropped. With all of that, the feeder calf market, although off from last year’s record prices, still produces a reasonable profit for the producers. The increased demand for higher yield and less fat by packers looks promising for users of Limousin genetics. Meetings were held in South Dakota concerning the new alliance with Tyson Fresh Meats concerning new opportunities for value-added programs involving the use of Limousin genetics in the Tyson natural beef brands. The front page article of the Heart Beat has more general information on the program. For those producers interested in the value-added natural program and doing the paper work to qualify for the various levels, the additional premiums could be critical for profitability in a down market. The Heartland Board of Directors have agreed to host the NALJA summer show at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds in Grand Island the first week of July
in 2017. Lots of work lies ahead for the Heartland states in the area of raising funds and providing workers to insure a successful event. The Heartland has asked Brenda Anderson of Garner, Iowa, to coordinate the event. We look forward to working with NALF and the NALJA advisory council to provide a safe and successful event. We wish Weston Geppert good luck as he moves on to his new endeavors and welcome Andy Rest as the Limousin World Regional Manager. Many of us remember Andy from his previous work with NALF and look forward to his service to the Limousin breed. Finally, Beverly and I want to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas. We look forward to seeing many of you at the National Western Stock Show in Denver this coming January. It is a great way to begin the New Year in Denver. Heartland will again be providing help hosting the NALF hospitality tent located in the herd-sire alley across from the stock yards pen and carload arena. We are also looking forward to cruising to Alaska in July of 2016. Be sure and contact Beverly if you are interested in cruising the inland channel with stops in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan.

In addition, he provided marketing assistance for the American International Charolais Association in the western United States. “We are pleased to welcome Andy back to NALF and Limousin World. His marketing experience and industry knowledge make him a great asset to members and stakeholders of the Limousin breed,” said Mark Anderson, NALF executive director. Rest began his duties October 1. He can be reached at (406) 670-5678 or by e-mail at andy@nalf.org.

he state fair Limousin Shows once again dominated our schedule from the middle of August until the middle of September. Each one is unique and has its own special “flavor.” Of course, you find the same things at each fair—corn dogs, mini donuts, rides, animals and a wide-assortment of people. I would like to share one interesting observation from each of the state fairs we attended this year. The Iowa State Fair in Des Moines was full of politicians. We decided to stay in the barn and avoid the crowd of reporters and photographers who followed them around the fair. They
did help to raise the attendance of the fair, which set a new record. Dean and I were part of the soldout crowd at the Alabama concert at the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia. It was fun to hear all the familiar songs. They may be getting older, but they still can sing and put on a great show! Dean scouted out the facilities at the Nebraska State Fair in preparation for the 2017 NALJA Show. The Heartland states will be hosting this annual event in Grand Island. Mark your calendar for July 3-8, 2017, for an “Escape to the Island.” The exhibitors and other Limousin enthusiasts were glad they were inside Juniors from Missouri took part in the NALJA Beef Cook-Off competition in Tulsa in July. Here is their recipe for a delicious breakfast treat.
watching the South Dakota State Fair Open Show in Huron Friday morning, September 4. It started raining during the show and by the time the storm was over, at least two inches had fallen. This was my 16th year working at the Minnesota State Fair Information Booth in St. Paul. One of the most interesting things happened on the last day, Labor Day. A family came to our booth and said that they had “lost grandma.” That didn’t seem too bad until they said that grandma was 100 and did not speak any English. The Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson is the last fair for us. We always enjoy this fair because we have time to walk around the fair after spending time in the barn and show ring. Of course, making a trip into the commercial buildings means you might leave some cash behind. Those sales pitches are irresistible.
I did receive a “title” at the Iowa, Missouri and Kansas State Fair Limousin Open Shows, I was the official “ribbon girl.” Well, “girl” might not exactly fit. Perhaps I should say, “Senior Queen.”
If you thought you saw a friendly face working the information booth at the Minnesota State Fair, you’d be right. This is the 16th year Beverly Summerbell has greeted and assisted people at the fair.

Kiley McKinna, a 2005 Agricultural Business graduate of Fort Hays State University, has made an impressive name for himself in the seedstock and marketing industry. Originally from a farm/ranch in southeast Saskatchewan, Canada, McKinna found his way to Hays after attending two years at Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis, Nebraska. While in Curtis, he successfully competed on the livestock judging team. “I was recruited by Dr. John Greathouse to be a part of the livestock judging team and that’s essentially why I chose to continue my education at Fort Hays State University,” McKinna said. While at FHSU, McKinna was also involved in the Block & Bridle Club, along with the livestock judging team. “Our team had a lot of success and I had quite a bit of individual success as well”. Following graduation, McKinna worked as a territory manager in the western half of the United States and Canada for the Limousin World, the official breed publication for the North American Limousin Foundation. MC Marketing Management was created after McKinna made the decision to start his own cattle marketing business. While working for the Limousin World, he had been expanding sales throughout his territory and establishing business relationships with breeders across the country. “The time was right in my life professionally. After nine years of learning and understanding both the
seedstock and marketing business, it was a natural transition into what I am doing now.” MC Marketing Management is based out of South Dakota and is committed to their clients. It provides a sound start to anyone wanting to build their seedstock herd into something much more. Whether organizing sales or day-to-day marketing needs, McKinna is there to provide them all for his clients. McKinna credits his time at the Limousin World to helping him start his own business. “Starting your own business isn’t always easy. It takes lots of patience and the understanding of the market your business will be serving.” “For students who will be graduating soon I recommend staying true to your strengths and diligently foster relationships that you have the ability to meet through Fort Hays State University and the industry you are going into.”

Happy Holidays
In times of high cattle prices, it’s not uncommon for producers to want to capitalize on prices as quickly as possible. Producers are gearing up to cash in on their investment in producing and raising a healthy calf, but there are a few reasons to slow down. “Preconditioning calves is one way that a farm or ranch can really add value,” Chris Forcherio, beef research manager at Purina Animal Nutrition Center, says in a company news release. “The producer implementing a preconditioning program may receive
a higher premium, and no matter where the calf goes after that, the opportunity for improved health and performance should be adding value from that program.” Preconditioning, which commonly includes a vaccination, nutritional and management program to help calves through a stressful time frame, can be an investment, but it can be an investment with potentially bigger payoffs down the road. Reasons • Improved health: Weaning can be very stressful for calves. Stress may cause them to go off feed, become immunocompromised and more susceptible to disease, or even result in death.
“Calves that are preconditioned with an effective vaccination program and started on a highquality nutrition program may be better equipped to handle this period of stress,” says Forcherio. Research shows preconditioning calves may lead to a significant reduction in treatment costs, as much as $29.50 per head, as well as 3.1 percent lower mortality rate in comparison to nonpreconditioned calves. Investing in animal health with preconditioning can help cattle get through stressful times, with potentially less treatment cost and more calves down the road. • Additional weight gain and increased feed efficiency: Selling calves at a later date that have gone through a preconditioning program will have added weight versus calves that are sold at weaning. • Management premium: Despite the additional costs of vaccination and nutrition, research shows conservative preconditioning may capture $50 to $75 per head of additional value. When considering a preconditioning program, there are several management elements to keep in mind. Make sure preconditioned calves are acquainted with feed bunks and water troughs. In addition, calves should be offered a high-quality balanced diet with the appropriate amount of energy, protein, minerals and vitamins.
The South Limousin Association Association sponsored a picnic after the Limousin shows at the South Dakota State Fair.

red replacement heifers that will calve in January and February need to continue to grow and maintain body condition, according to Glen Selk at Oklahoma State University Extension. Ideally, two-year-old heifers should be in a body condition score 6 at the time their first calf is born. This allows them the best opportunity to provide adequate
winter weather adds additional nutrient requirements. Wheat pasture (if adequate rainfall produces growth) can be used as a supplement for pregnant replacement heifers. Using wheat pasture judiciously makes sense for pregnant heifers for two reasons. Pregnant heifers consuming full feed of wheat pasture will gain at
colostrum to the baby, repair the reproductive tract, return to heat cycles, rebreed on time for next year, and continue normal body growth. From now on until calving time, the heifers need to be gaining one to one-and-half pounds per head per day, assuming that they are in good body condition coming out of summer. Heifers will need supplemental protein, if the major source of forage in the diet is Bermuda grass or native pasture or grass hay. If the forage source is adequate in quantity and average in quality (six to nine percent crude protein), heifers will need about two pounds of high protein (38 to 44 percent CP) supplement each day. This will probably need to be increased with higher quality hay (such as alfalfa) or additional energy feed (20 percent range cubes) as
about three pounds per head per day. If they are on wheat too long, heifers can become very fat and cause dystocia (calving difficulty). Also, the wheat pasture can be used for gain of stocker cattle or weaned replacement heifers more efficiently. If wheat pasture is used for bred heifers, use it as a protein supplement by allowing heifers access to the wheat pasture on at least alternate days. Some producers report that one day on wheat pasture and two days on native or Bermuda will work better. This encourages the heifers to go rustle in the warm season pasture for the second day, rather than just stand by the gate waiting to be turned back in to the wheat. Whatever method is used to grow the regnant replacement heifers, plan to have them in good body condition by calving so they will grow into fully developed productive cows.
Gage Baker of Fulton exhibited his 4/29/15 bull calf, Cru, and was named grand champion bull.
In the FFA show, Cody Heavin of Springfield exhibited the grand champion female with AUTO Usually Yours 290A born 9/2/13.

Dohrmann Wins Grand Champion Market Beef Live Carcass Competition
Moser Family Donates Heifer to MYBE Program The Minnesota Limousin Association (MLA) would like to say a very special “thank you” to the Moser family of Morris for their generous donation of a heifer for the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Program. John, Laurie, Joanna and Justus Moser have been actively involved in the MLA and have exhibited cattle at the local, state, regional and national levels. They understand the value of having junior members raise and show heifers. Each year heifers from several breeds are donated and then given to deserving juniors at the Minnesota Beef Expo in October. Juniors must submit a letter of application, and heifers are awarded to the juniors based on need and the quality of the application. The juniors must take care of the heifers for a year, keep records, communicate with the breeder who donated the heifer, and bring the heifer back the following year to the Expo. If all conditions have been met, the heifer is then given to the junior to keep on a permanent basis. Will Bollum Receives Livestock Breeders’ Association Scholarships The Minnesota Livestock Breeders’ Association Scholarships are presented each year to 4-H and FFA youth who are active members and exhibitors during the year of application. The participants are selected based on leadership experience and personal growth achievements. Additionally, the scholarship rewards academic excellence and outstanding livestock production. Congratulations to Will Bollum of Dakota County for being the recipient of a $2,000 scholarship sponsored by Independent Community Bankers.

“Back in Time” Do You Know the Answer? Answers: 1.) The Bill and Gloria Leonard family from Holstein, Iowa. They have been raising Limousin cattle for over 45 years. 2.) 1980. William Leonard, Mark Leonard holding eldest daughter Emily Leonard (now Melody), and Lori Leonard (now Reyman).
In the FFA show, the results were reversed. Joanna Moser exhibited the grand champion female and Laura Church took home the reserve grand champion banner. Wiley Fanta was third best in the breeding beef intermediate showmanship. Jordan Hoover of Rice County exhibited the grand champion Limousin steer and Casper Witt of Fillmore County had the reserve grand champion steer in the 4-H show.
3.) Father and son, Bill and Mark, are among the earliest breeders of Limousin in the country. Leonard Limousin has been raising and promoting Limousin cattle since 1969. Mark served as president of the Iowa Limousin Association, president of the North American Limousin Junior Association, president of the Iowa Limousin Junior Association, and organized the first National Limousin Junior Heifer Show held in Des Moines in 1976. Daughter Lori showed Limousin heifers for many years, held various NALJA offices and served as 1979 Iowa Limousin Queen and 1980 National Limousin Queen. Mark’s daughter, Emily, also showed Limousin cattle for many years and wore the Iowa Limousin Queen crown in 1997. Bill passed away in 2009. Mark and his wife, Sheryl, and Lori and husband, Dennis Reyman, continue to raise Limousin cattle in northwest Iowa. Questions on page 15.

Managed Weaning Lowers Stress, Increases Health
W
eaning is one of the most stressful times for calves due to health challenges and dietary changes, according to Justin Sexten, director of supply development for CAB LLC. By managing to minimize stress at this stage, you’ll also minimize shrink and give calves the best opportunity to meet their genetic potential for growth and carcass merit, Sexten said in a news release. Tailor a health program to your ranch goals by first visiting with your local veterinarian. You may have started preparing for weaning health at branding or pre-breeding by vaccinating calves for clostridia (black-leg) and respiratory diseases. If not, consider vaccination three to four weeks prior to weaning with a booster shot at weaning. The facilities can be a source of stress at weaning, so take time before gathering calves to make sure all are in good repair and pen waterers are ready for calves. Clean water is the most important nutrient a calf needs. Fence-line weaning can reduce calf stress and improve weaning health. Placing calves across the fence from the cows reduces walking and helps address the challenge of getting calves to feed and water. Orient the weaning pastures and pens so the cows draw the calves to feed bunks and waterers. Depending on weaning stress, calves may take one to three weeks to consume enough feed to allow for weight gain. As a rule of thumb, they need to eat 2 percent of body weight in feed to provide enough nutrients for growth. Commodity feeds like grain can be used at weaning to get calves used to eating, but make sure the diet is suited to calves’ growth potential. Develop an energy-dense feed with balanced protein sources to overcome that reduced intake associated with weaning stress. Weaning onto a vegetative pasture will provide calves with a familiar feedstuff, but should be supplemented to ensure adequate nutrients for growth. Offering hay during the first week of the transition can increase feed intake and gain. The forage available during weaning should be high quality, palatable and fed daily if possible rather than offered as a bale.
Providing hay in the feed bunks rather than in a bale ring can help calves find feed earlier. When hay is offered in a ring, calves may not approach the bunk as quickly, prolonging the time to consume adequate feed for gain. Monitoring feed intake is one of the best indicators to gage weaning program issues. Until calves get well started on feed, consider feeding multiple times each day to increase observations and stimulate calves to come to the bunk. Avoid using self-feeders in the weaning pen until calves are started on feed. Ideally, calves should have 18 inches of bunk space to ensure timid ones can get to the bunk. Taking steps to minimize weaning stress promotes long-term health, performance and carcass merit.
Rodney Watts, a professional singer from Fordsville, KY, entertained the large crowd that gathered for the social the night before The Foundation Sale in Bowling Green, KY. Watts not only travels around the United States performing, he also raises Limousin cattle.
