roviding forage and feed supplies with the proper nutritional value for cows is an important consideration for producers as winter approaches,” said Dr. Jason Banta, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Beef Cattle Specialist. Testing hay for quality can provide information producers need to meet the nutritional requirements of cows and keep them in good condition through the winter, Banta said. By determining the hay supply’s crude protein content and total digestible nutrients (TDN), which is the measurement of available energy in the forage, producers can determine whether supplemental feed will be necessary, Banta said. Knowing what type and how much supplemental feed is needed can save producers money long term. “Sometimes we find hay is better than we thought, and we can save some money on supplementation,” he said. “At other times we find the hay wasn’t as good as we wanted, so we do

need to provide our cows with some more protein and energy supplements to make sure they are in the condition we want before calving so we optimize their pregnancy rates in the future.” Nutritional needs vary for various animals in a herd, Banta said. For instance, lactating cows require more protein and TDN than dry cows. Tested hay should show a minimum of 11-11.5 percent crude protein and 63 percent TDN on a dry matter basis to maintain most lactating cows, he said. Banta recommends visiting with a nutritionist to determine appropriate tests for specific hay species. The cost of testing hay can range from $2560 per sample, but Banta said it’s an investment that will help producers optimize their cows’ nutrition and future breeding success. “It may sound like a lot of money, but if we can do a better job feeding cattle, you’re going to make that money back on calves in the long run,” he said.

You are Invited

The Heartland Limousin Association (HLA) invites everyone to attend their annual meeting, banquet and benefit auction. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, February 14, 2017. The festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the FFA Building (west of the cattle barn) on the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. This annual event is held in conjunction with the Iowa Beef Expo. The banquet is FREE and is a wonderful opportunity to socialize with Limousin breeders from various parts of the upper Midwest. The HLA is seeking items to be donated for the benefit auction. In the past there have been a variety of unique and interesting things donated as well as food items. There also have been cattle supplies, embryos and semen donated. The money raised from this auction goes to support the travel expenses of the HLA Executive Secretary. We appreciate your support of the HLA! Contact Dean Summerbell or any member of the HLA board of directors if you have items to be donated or would like to leave a bid. Check out the HLA website at www.heartlandlimousin.org for updated information on the banquet and a list of items on the benefit auction. In addition, photos of the donated items will be posted on the Heartland Limousin Association Facebook page. Thank You!

trust everyone had a very blessed Holiday season. As I write this column on December 2, our ground is not covered with any snow which is very unusual for this time of year in Minnesota. We did have five-plus

The HLA will be working with NALF again this year to host a hospitality tent in the Yards during the Limousin portion of the National Western Stock Show. Those who are coming to Denver are cordially invited to stop by the Yards for a cup of coffee and a bag of popcorn during your visit. The tent will be open and hosted by HLA members from January 9-12, and then the NALF staff will take over for the weekend. The Heartland Limousin Association is also gearing up to host the NALJA summer show at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds in Grand Island July1-7, 2017. We would appreciate all members to volunteer during the week of events. There are many opportunities to lend a hand throughout the week. One or two days would be a tremendous help to everyone. January brings the National Western Stock Show in Denver and the beginning of bull sales in the Heartland. February will be filled with production and consignment sales in addition to state and regional meetings. March will continue with more sales and state meetings. I invite all Heartland members and Limousin enthusiasts to Des Moines February 14, 2017, for the Heartland Banquet and Benefit auction. The complimentary meal is provided by the Iowa Limousin Association and the Heartland Limousin Association. Plan to join us for an evening of socializing and fun. The money raised from the HLA benefit auction helps to keep us “on the road” covering Limousin events for another year. The Iowa Beef Expo Limousin sale is Wednesday, February 15. Check out the many production and consignment sales as well as state sponsored meetings, banquets and benefit auctions listed in the Heartland calendar. It is great to see so many fellow breeders supporting those who have worked to put together sales and annual meetings. Our Limousin breed is known for being a family affair and

we appreciate the support of everyone who attends these events. The HLA has four board members retiring after six years of service. Thanks to Andy Peterson of Osceola, Wisconsin, Norma Effertz of Velva, North Dakota, Mark Willette of Delavan, Minnesota, and Cash Schilling of Edson, Kansas, for their time and efforts serving on the board of directors. I would especially like to thank Cash Schilling for his term as President of the HLA Board the last four years. He is an outstanding leader and he will be missed! We were saddened this November to hear of the tragic death of the 2015 Commercial Producer of Year from South Dakota. Delmer Stern was an avid enthusiast of Limousin genetics and he was proud of his red cows. He was also a great Minnesota Twins fan, attending spring training on numerous years. But above all, he was a great family man. He was also my friend. Our sympathy is extended to the Stern family. We wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous 2017, and hope to see you in Denver!

JOIN US IN THE YARDS We invite you to join us in the NALF Hospitality Tent in the Yards during the NWSS in Denver (January 9-12). There will be complimentary coffee, hot chocolate, cookies and popcorn. The tent is located in the herd sire aisle across from the pen and carload arena. Heartland members join with NALF to staff the booth.

See you there!

Mission Statement of the Heartland Limousin Association The purpose for which the HLA is organized is to serve as a service organization designed to promote and further enhance the Limousin breed of cattle in the seven state area comprised of IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, SD and WI. The goals for the Association shall include promotion, strengthening state and junior associations within the region; development of a regional publication; improvement of communication and a unified attitude of breeders; to provide market information and expertise; to serve as a coordinator of events between the Association and the industry; to increase breeder involvement; and to strengthen ties between the NALF and the Heartland Limousin Association.

H

ave you ever had an occurrence happen, not once but twice, that is so stunning you can’t even react? That happened to both Dean and I in October, and neither time did I even think to get out my cell phone to snap photos. As a result, you are going to have to imagine the scenes as I describe what happened to us. At the time, we didn’t think it was very funny. Dean was busy looking at cattle consigned to the Heart of Missouri Sale in Lebanon Sunday morning, October 9, 2016. He was checking out the females when one of the new momma cows decided she did not like having anyone look at her in the pen. She turned and literally “sprayed” him with manure. At the same time, I was walking into the alley with a cup of coffee for Dean.

When he turned around, I could not believe my eyes. He had a big blob of manure stuck on the right side of his forehead, another junk plastered on his chin (he looked like he had a beard), there was a large amount on the sleeve of his bright pink shirt, and it was all down the right side of his pant leg. I stood there in amazement before telling him to go wash it off right away. It would have been a memorable photo! The next unique event happened at the Minnesota Beef Expo in St. Paul Saturday evening, October 22, 2016. We were there for the Supreme Row Selection and Dinner provided by the Minnesota Corn Growers and the MN Simmental Association, the featured breed. Next year Limousin will be the featured breed. Dean found a table on the main floor of the arena, which is better than trying to balance

your plate while sitting in the stands. I got in line to pick up plates of food for both of us. I had been a waitress while in college so I felt confident in my ability to manage two plates of food (shredded beef sandwiches on Hogie buns, baked beans, coleslaw plus two bags of chips and two bottles of water). I made it all the way down the long hall and into the arena, where Dean was patiently waiting for his supper. Both plates were balanced on one arm. I put one plate down and as I did that, I must have raised my right arm just enough for my entire plate of food to get plastered onto my jean jacket.

Member News Get well wishes are sent to Julie Symens of Britton, South Dakota. She tore the tendons in her leg and needed surgery at the end of November to repair the damage. John Symens of Amherst, South Dakota, had his second knee replacement surgery this fall. He is hoping to be completely healed in time for the NWSS. Our thoughts are with Phil Shipman of Girard, Kansas, as he continues his treatments for cancer. We also want to remember Mike

Christie of Baldwin, Kansas, as he recovers from a lingering virus. We wish him continued success following his liver transplant. Our sympathy goes out to Deb and Mike Smith of Plainville, Kansas, on the death of her brother this fall. We also extend our sympathy to the family of Delmer Stern of Garden City, South Dakota. He was killed in an accident this fall, hauling cattle from one pasture to another. His obituary is located on the South Dakota News page of this issue of the Heart Beat.

Josh Glendenning and Kayla Peters were united in marriage September 17, 2016, in Lebanon, Missouri. Parents of the groom are Jack and Vicky Glendenning of Lebanon. Congratulations!

Hattie Josephine Fosdick was born November 9, 2016, to Thadd and Alissa (Johnson) Fosdick of Fairbury, IL. She weighed in at 6 lbs., 8 oz., and measured 20 inches. Proud grandparents are Harry and Lisa Fosdick of Chenoa IL; Mike and Denice Dirks of Luverne, MN; and Randy Johnson of Ashton, IA. Greatgrandparents are: Charles and Helen Perkins of Glasgow, KY; and Stan Johnson of Sibley, IA.

This was one of my mom’s favorite pies. Reading over this recipe brings back many fond memories. Bev Summerbell

Graham Cracker Pie CRUST

• Mix sugar and cornstarch in double boiler

Top pie, brown in oven for 15 min. at 350⁰.

• Cook until thick, stirring constantly.

Chill for 2 hours

• Remove from heat, add vanilla. • Pour into pie shell

After looking at my jacket, I was amazed that there had been that many beans on my plate—they were smashed on the right side of my jacket, on my sleeve and even on my pants leg. I also had a large amount of juice from the coleslaw running down my right leg. Remembering my advice to Dean with the manure, I headed to the bathroom to wash it off immediately. Again, I never thought to get out my cell phone for a photo. Hopefully, we are finished with our memorable moments; however, I’m sure other amusing things will happen as we travel across the Heartland covering shows, sales and other Limousin events.

Tucker James Herrick came into the world November 23, 2016, weighing 7 lbs., 10 oz. and 21-1/2 in. to Tyler and Megan Herrick of Rochester, MN. Grandparents are Dan and Vickie Witt of Witt Limousin, and Steve and Julie Herrick of Herrick’s White Acres. Everyone is excited for their newest showman to join in on the fun!

Gene Raymond Nominated to NALF Board of Directors Gene Raymond of Garnett, Kansas, has been nominated to serve a threeyear term on the North American L i m o u s i n Foundation Board of Directors (NALF). The vote will take place Monday, January 9, 2017, during the NALF Annual Meeting at the NWSS National Western Club in Denver, Colorado. Gene and his wife, Virginia, started GV Limousin in 1978. Their cow herd has grown to 400-plus registered females and is operated with his son-in-law, Arne, and daughter, Stacy Hanson. He has been actively involved with the livestock industry for many years, serving twice as president of the Kansas Beef Council, he is a past member of the Kansas Livestock Association executive committee, and he was on the National Livestock and Meat Board for 16 years where he served as chairman of the long-range planning and advertising committees. Wisconsin News… Peterson Limousin Beef Featured in Minneapolis Star Tribune

P

eterson Limousin Beef of Osceola, Wisconsin, was featured in the food section of the September 23, 2016, edition of the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper. According to the article, discerning chefs all over the Twin Cities area rely upon this familyowned purveyor for its lean, rich and flavorful beef. The article was one in a series of “Know Where Your Food Comes From” edition of Burger Friday. The paper interviewed Andy Peterson, co-owner of the business, for the article. The Peterson farm is a family run operation including Wayne and Christine, and their two sons and daughter. Wayne is the primary caretaker on the day-today basis, Andy does the marketing and distribution, and son, Ryan, recently joined the operation on a full-time basis. The farm, located in the St. Croix Valley, goes back to Andy’s paternal grandfather, who had a dairy herd in the 1960’s, they expanded to pigs and chickens along with commodity cash crops in the 1970’s. In the ’90s the family simplified the operation, focusing on Limousin cattle and cash crops. They liked the traits of the Limousin breed, especially the added muscle. Andy said he has always enjoyed the eating experience. In 2009, the family operation shifted to wholesale selling to chefs and restaurants. Peterson Farms includes three operations, one in Dresser, Wisconsin, and two in Osceola. They have about 150 momma cows and about 300 head in all. Their fat cattle go to the butcher between 18-24 months. They

get their meat processed at a local USDA-inspected butcher. They have a proprietary dry-aging process that’s unique and completely natural. They let the beef shine as much as possible. Currently, they deliver Limousin beef to approximately 30-plus restaurants. According to Andy, “Seeing Peterson Limousin Beef cited on some of the top menus in the Twin Cities is a cool experience. The chefs get behind you, as the producer, and say that they believe in you.” Peterson Limousin ground beef is also sold at boutique retailers: Sassafras Health Foods in White Bear Lake and Mastel’s Health Foods in St. Paul, Minnesota. Their goal is to be able to continue to run a family farm and raise their families the way their parents raised them. A Family Affair: Jeff and Cheryl Keyes watched as their three children exhibited their junior cattle at the Minnesota Beef Expo in St. Paul. Son, Blane, watched his brother and sister show females.

Cattle Producers Urges to Prepare for Implementation of New Regulations

B

eef cattle producers need to prepare for the January 1, 2017, implementation of the Veterinary Feed Directive regulations, according to Rob Eirich, Nebraska Beef Quality Assurance Director with Nebraska Extension. The regulations will be implemented by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and requires producers to work directly with their veterinarian when they use feed-grade antibiotics with all food-producing livestock. A Veterinary Feed Directive is a paper or electronic written order by a licensed veterinarian approving the use of a feed-grade antibiotic for the prevention, treatment or control of a diagnosed disease. The regulations will apply only to antibiotics in livestock feed and will not affect feed-use medications such as ionophores, coccidian, other parasite and insect control drugs, or reproductive control medications. They also will not apply to antibiotics administered by injection. “The first step producers should complete is to develop a valid Veterinarian-Client Patient Relationship,

Yesterday

which includes an operation site visit and discussion about herd health,” Eirich said in a news release. “A complete herd health plan should be created for vaccination and treatment protocols during this discussion.” Eirich said producers must look at their operation production calendar to determine what health risks they may encounter over the course of the year, how to prevent the risks through vaccinations and how to treat diagnosed diseases with antibiotics. If treatment protocol calls for using a feed-grade antibiotic, producers will be required to obtain a Veterinary Feed Directive from their veterinarian prior to purchasing and feeding the product. The veterinarian must provide signed written or electronic copies to the feed distributor and producer before the directive product is delivered to the producer.

The directive must state what is being treated, the product used, rate of inclusion, duration of treatment, number of head being treated and at what location or operation. Each directive must also include an expiration date, which is the last date the product can be fed. Another key point for producers to understand, according to Eirich, is that the regulations allow no extra-label use of medicated feeds. These regulations will also be enforced more within the livestock industry, he said. Directive products can only be used for prevention, treatment or control of diseases indicated on the FDA Approved Labels.

How Much Hay Will a Cow Consume?

E

stimating forage usage by cows is an important part of the task of calculating winter feed needs. Hay or standing forage intake must be estimated in order to make the calculation. Forage quality will be a determining factor in the amount of forage consumed, according to a press release by Glenn Selk, Oklahoma State University Emeritus Extension Animal Scientist. Higher quality forages contain larger concentrations of important nutrients so animals consuming these forages should be more likely to meet their nutrient needs from the forages. Also, cows can consume a larger quantity of higher quality forages. Higher quality forages are fermented more rapidly in the rumen leaving a void that the animal can refill with additional forage. Consequently, forage intake increases. For example, low quality forages (below about 6 percent crude protein) will be consumed at about 1.5 percent of body weight (on a dry matter basis) per day. Higher quality grass hays (above 8 percent crude protein) may be consumed at about 2.0 percent of body weight. Excellence forages, such as good alfalfa, silages, or green pasture may be consumed at the rate of 2.5 percent dry matter of body weight per day. The combination of increased nutrient content and increased forage intake makes high quality forage very valuable to the animal and the producer.

With these intake estimates, now producers can calculate the estimated amounts of hay that need to be available. Using an example of 1,200-pound pregnant spring-calving cows, let’s assume that the grass hay quality is good and tested 8 percent crude protein. Cows will voluntarily consume 2 percent of body weight or 24 pounds per day. The 24 pounds is based on 100 percent dry matter. Grass hays will often be

7-10 percent moisture. If we assume that the hay is 92 percent dry matter or 8 percent moisture, then the cows will consume about 26 pounds per day on an “as-fed basis.” Unfortunately we also have to consider hay wastage when feeding big round bales. Hay wastage is difficult to estimate, but generally has been found to be from 6 percent to 20 percent (or more). For this example, let’s assume 15 percent hay wastage. This means that approximately 30 pounds of grass hay must be hauled to the pasture for each cow each day that hay is expected to be the primary ingredient in the diet. After calving and during early lactation, the cow may weigh 100 pounds less, but will be able to consume about 2.6 percent of her body weight (100 percent dry matter) in hay. This would translate into 36 pounds of “as-fed” hay per cow per day necessary to be hauled to the pasture. This again assumes 15 percent hay wastage. Accurate knowledge of average cow size in your herd as well as the average weight of your big round bales becomes necessary to predict hay needs and hay feeding strategies.

Calculation topics include beef cattle, grazing and fertilization, according to a news release from the organization. “We wanted to create an app that would provide more information for farmers and ranchers, giving them the ability to make betterinformed management decision out in the field,” said Bryan Nichols, Noble Foundation livestock consultant. “We chose the calculators that best fit the common situations producers encounter on a daily basis.” The app is available for free download through the Apple and Android app stores. The calculators are also available in a desktop version online at www.noble.org/ag/tools.
