o you remember the old saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?” The livestock industry practices this on a regular basis in order to keep animals healthy. Livestock producers prefer to prevent sickness rather than treat sickness. Treating sick animals is not only expensive, it can also be very time consuming. Here are some common techniques producers use to keep their animals healthy and avoid having to treat them.

Good Nutrition Just like human nutrition—eating a healthy diet and maybe also taking a daily vitamin and mineral supplement— livestock producers balance rations for their animals to ensure a healthy diet. To do this, producers test feeds and then match amounts of nutrients from the feeds to the animals’ nutrient requirements. In addition to the feeds, producers provide trace mineral mixtures formulated with salt to adjust for nutrient deficiencies from the feeds. Why is nutrition so important? Growth rates, reproductive efficiency and especially immune system function all rely on good nutrition for best performance. Good mineral nutrition also boosts an animal’s response to vaccinations, a primary method to protect animals from disease.

Facilities I can’t stress enough the importance of a clean and dry environment with

good ventilation. Animals are well adapted to handle cold temperatures when they are well fed and have a good hair coat. Good ventilation can result in good air quality. This is why livestock producers keep barns cleaned out and well bedded during the winter months. Cleanliness is the key.

Vaccinations Choose vaccines based on prior experience with disease on the farm as well as the likelihood of exposure to diseases. Read product labels and handle vaccinations properly. Simple procedures to follow include proper storage temperature, vaccinating clean and dry animals, injecting with clean needles, and injecting with the correct method. Also, check expiration dates and discard expired products. Only healthy animals get vaccinated so that the immune system best utilizes

the vaccine. Producers should also vaccinate at least two weeks prior to a stressful event such as weaning, transporting, or castrating.

Biosecurity One way animal diseases arrive on a farm is through contact with other animals that may or may not appear sick. Producers who exhibit their animals at various shows will house these animals separate from the main herd once those animals return home from the show. This quarantine period should last three to four weeks before those animals can be mixed with the rest of the herd. Animal disease can also arrive on a farm through indirect contact. This occurs when producers visit other farms, transport animals to a sale barn, or even visit a county fair. Once the producer arrives back at the home farm, they should change their clothing and shoes to avoid exposing their own animals to bacteria and viruses that could be carried home on their clothing or footwear. Prevention programs are not fool proof. Livestock operations can still develop sick animals on occasion. However, the goal is to minimize the risk of animals getting sick so that the need for treatment is less likely. Farmers observe animals on a daily basis so they can identify very quickly when problems arise. Sick animals are moved to a location away from the main herd and treated as necessary.

Jerry Effertz Selected as NDSA’s “Top Hand”

“Back in Time” Do You Know the Answer?

erry Effertz of Velva, North Dakota, received the North Dakota Stockman Association (NDSA) highest honor, the “Top Hand Award,” at the annual convention in Fargo, North Dakota September 23, 2017. “The “Top Hand” award recognizes individuals who have given unselfishly of themselves, demonstrated outstanding leadership, and earned the highest esteem of friends and associations across the cattle industry,” explained NDSA president Warren Zenker. “Jerry is one of those individuals who has always gone above and beyond for North Dakota and the nation’s beef producers, and it is a privilege to recognize him for his service.” Effertz, a third-generation producer, began farming and ranching in the 1970s. Through crossbreeding, artificial insemination, performance testing, and genetic selection tools, he and his wife, Norma, developed a respected Limousin ranch. Effertz Black Butte Acres offers registered seedstock and backgrounded feeder calves. Jerry was a founding member of the North Dakota Limousin Association, a member of the Heartland Limousin Association and the North American Limousin Foundation. He is committed to educating people about the cattle business and stewardship of the land. Jerry has helped advance the agricultural industry through his leadership, vision and service. He is a 35-year member of the NDSA and served as chairman of the NDSA Seedstock Council. He was also involved in initiating the North Dakota Junior Point Show and he was on the ND State Fair Board for many years. As an advocate of research and education, Jerry chaired the State Board of Agricultural Research and Education, he chaired the North Dakota Beef

Commission, he served on various committees and boards representing North Dakota on the national level through the Federation of State Beef Councils as well as the U.S. Meat Export Federation. In 2011, he represented the U.S. beef industry on a trade mission to the Pacific Rim. He has served on the Beef Promotion and Operating Committee, multiple terms, most recently as the Federation of State Beef Councils chairman. Effertz was inducted into North Dakota’s Agricultural “Hall of Fame” last year and previously received North Dakota State University’s “Outstanding Agriculturist” award, and the “Agri-International Stockman of the Year” award. Jerry and Norma, have two daughters, Maria (Mike) Hanson of Velva, North Dakota, and Kayla (Craig) Kleven of Bismarck, North Dakota, and four grandchildren; Wyatt, Elizabeth, Paisley and Garrett.

right time for selling feeder calves or for that matter, finished cattle. The market most generally outperformed the futures, but raising cattle was more expensive due to drought. The price of corn remained steady but weak, which helped the feedlots

By Bev Summerbell “Thank You,” an expression of gratitude and acknowledgment for service, is one that we use often when working with members of the Heartland Limousin Association (HLA). However, after 17 years on the job, I thought it was time to take a closer look at what the letters in the word “thank you” really mean to us. ime is what the HLA members have given over the years. They have dedicated their service to the Limousin breed since we’ve been on the job by putting on NALJA shows in Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota, Missouri and Nebraska. In addition, they have supported the Heartland Regional Show by sponsoring awards, working at the shows, and providing food. It was also great to see so many members helping out in the NALF Hospitality Tent during the National Western Stock Show. elping is the middle name of our members. They are ready to help wherever and whenever they are needed. An example would be the four couples who worked tirelessly at this summer’s NALJA show, providing 13 meals to over 500 people per meal. State fair picnics, provided by the state associations, were a highlight throughout the Heartland states. State fairs also give us an opportunity to educate the public about our breed of cattle. I know firsthand from working at the Minnesota State Fair many of the 1,997,320 people who came through the gates during the 12 days of the fair wanted to see and learn about the animals. ll the members of the HLA support each other at shows and sales. It is wonderful to see juniors helping the younger members as they learn to take care of their animals and show at the various events. It is also great to see so many breeders sitting in the stands at consignment and production sales. The stands were filled this year with Limousin enthusiasts at the state fair open Limousin shows. othing can stop our breed and breeders from continued success! We have cattle that can work for everyone—Purebred, Lim-Flex and Fullblood. It’s interesting to travel to sales and shows across the Heartland and see the improvements that have been made (especially since Dean and I began raising cattle back in the early 1980s). eeping our eye on the goal of promoting Limousin cattle, we are all working hard through word of mouth, social media and print publications. There are many things to “shout about” including Supreme Champions, great sales, and outstanding close-outs in the markets.

We both put in 34 years teaching elementary and secondary school, and now we are well into our “second career”. We would not have been able to do this job without the support of our members in the association and their friendship. verall, this has been a very positive and unique experience for us. You never know when one door closes (retirement from Anoka-Hennepin District #11), what will happen when another door opens. I grew up in town without ever having a pet. In 1994 we moved to the country where we had cattle, seven horses, a donkey, two dogs and many barn cats. That was the beginning of my adventure into Limousin cattle. nite! If we all unite together, we can continue on the road to success. As I close, I want to end with another huge “shout out” to all our Limousin members— THANK YOU!

STEAK KABOBS & WILD RICE WITH MUSHROOMS Kabobs 1 lb. beef Round Tip Steak, cut in 1-¼ in. thick pieces ½ small red onion, cut into ¾ in. wedges 1 small yellow summer squash, cut lengthwise in ½, then crosswise into 1 in. slices 1 small red or green bell pepper, cut into 1 inch pieces Marinade 2 T. water 2 T. coarse-grain Dijon-style mustard 2 T red wine vinegar 2 large cloves garlic, minced 2 tsp. coarse ground black pepper Combine marinade ingredients. Place beef and marinade in food-safe plastic bag; turn to coat. Close bag securely and marinate in refrigerator 6 hours or overnight, turn occasionally. Rice 2 tsp. vegetable oil 1 pkg. (6 oz.) wild rice blend Cook rice according to package directions, omitting salt and butter.

2 cups thinly sliced mushrooms Heat 2 tsp. oil in large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Add mushrooms, cook and stir until tender. Remove and keep warm. Serve kabobs over wild rice.

Iowa News… Mark Your Calendar The Iowa Limousin Association (ILA) will hold their annual meeting, banquet and benefit auction at the Cattlemen’s Building in Ames on November 18, 2017. We hope to have a large group of Limousin breeders, their families and juniors at this annual event. The day will begin with a meeting of the ILA board of directors followed by a meeting for the general membership and juniors. The social hour will start at 5:30 p.m. followed by the meal, awards program and benefit auction. Congratulations Juniors Limousin juniors took part in the Iowa State Fair 4-H and FFA shows. Alex Faidley of Polk County exhibited the grand champion Limousin steer,

and Carson Walrod of Webster County took home the reserve grand champion banner. Nick Duckett of Grimes exhibited the reserve grand champion heifer in the FFA All-Other Breeds class. The 4-H Breeding Beef Show was held August 15, 2017, and Matt Claeys of West Lafayette, Indiana, sorted the cattle in all the breeds.

Boyer Family Recipients of “The Way We Live” Award The Boyer family of Weldon, Iowa, was one of six Iowa families who received “The Way We Live” award at the 2017 Iowa State Fair. The award was presented to Jason, Amy, Kaitlyn, Konrad and Kasey Boyer Tuesday, August 15. This award, sponsored by DuPont Pioneer and WHO NewsRadio 1040, was started in 2009 and has recognized 54 Iowa farm families over the years. The recipients are chosen based on their dedication to agriculture and their strong Iowa farm values. Each entrant was asked to submit a short essay describing how the occupation of farming and living on a farm has shaped their lives. Six families were chosen from a total of forty-two entries submitted this year. Each award winning family receives a prize package of $250, complimentary

admission tickets and free parking at the Iowa State Fair, various coupons, and individual recognition in the Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning Center during the fair. Jason Boyer, his wife, Amy, and their 40 purebred Limousin cows moved from the East Coast to Weldon, Iowa, in 1995. Their goal was to escape the urban sprawl. They purchased 140 acres of land and slowly worked to build up their operation. In 2001, the family purchased and restored a 1930s hip-roof barn and opened the Harvest Barn Marketplace. The store started with fresh produce and country inspired gifts. Since then it has evolved into a seasonal business with a corn maze, pumpkin patch, fun farm, and delicious food products.

The family began to directly market their products at the Downtown Des Moines Farmer’s Market in 2008. The Boyer family is one of 300 entrepreneurs representing 50 counties across the state of Iowa. The market spans nine city blocks and is held in the Historic Court District. This keeps the entire Boyer family busy every Saturday morning from May-October.

The Boyer’s current farm operation consists of purebred Limousin bulls and cows, feeder hogs, and a small flock of commercial club lambs. The farm also grows crops including corn, soybeans, pumpkins and alfalfa hay. They are active members of the Iowa Limousin Association, the Heartland Limousin Association and the North American Limousin Foundation.

Bosch Limousin Farms “Blue Hat” Travels to Indonesia Bob Bosch, Bosch Limousin Farms of Indianola, Iowa, enjoyed showing Bambang Sudarmadji, a 61-year-old visitor from Indonesia, their Limousin cattle in September. Bob gave Bambang a “blue Bosch Limousin hat” to take back to the Pacific Islands. The Bosch Limousin crew have been wearing the blue hats for the past 20 years. Bambang’s daughter, Agatha Crane of Des Moines, Iowa, is working on her Master’s Degree in Nutrition Sciences at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. She contacted Bob and

Mary Bosch and stated that her father wanted to visit a cattle farm. She also served as an interpreter for her father, who spoke no English. Much of the visit centered on the feed provided to the cows and calves. Bob showed his visitors the hay, pellets, tubs and silage. Bambang said that in Indonesia they only feed grass. The visitors toured the farm on the Gator, viewing the calves that had just been weaned. At the end of the visit, Agatha said that the visit to the farm was

a “highlight” of her father’s visit to the United States. If you travel to

Iowa News… Breeders from Iowa and Missouri Exhibit at Iowa State Fair The Iowa State Fair Open Limousin Show in Des Moines kicks off the

state fair season in the Heartland. The show was held August 14, 2017, on a

beautiful, cool summer day. A total of 19 breeders brought their females and

bulls for judge Shane Lindsey of Prairie City, Iowa to evaluate.

Lowell Hermon Limousin of Carlisle, IA, captured the purebred grand champion female banner with LOHE Dixie Chick 604D, a 3/21/16 daughter of Alter Ego out of VL Trixie. She was the Division IV champion and the Iowa Champion Female.

The reserve grand champion purebred female and Division III champion was SL Dreaming Big, a 5/19/16 daughter of MAGS Antelope out of SL Dream On exhibited by Dawson Book of Eldridge, IA.

CELL 6171D, a 3/14/16 daughter of CELL 3211A out of EF Blue J 347R took home grand champion Lim-Flex female honors exhibited by Riley Long, Long & Sons of Afton, IA.

She was also a member of the champion Beef team for NEO A&M College in Miami, OK. Judge Shane Lindsey of Prairie City, IA, and Justin Venner of Carroll, IA, helped Justin’s 5-yearold daughter, Devon, show her heifer, JBV Bubbles, at the Iowa State Fair.

Fifty years ago Rod Peterson of Pukwana, SD, won the Senior Beef Showmanship award at the Western Junior Livestock Show in Rapid City, SD. Twenty-five years later his son, Chisum, earned the same title. On October 4, 2017, Delaney won a buckle that says, “Champion Senior Showman” precisely 25 and 50 years after her Dad and Grandpa won the award. Congratulations to the Peterson family!

Kansas News… Ticket Drawn for Traeger Grill Limousin breeders traveled to Hutchinson to exhibit cattle, watch the show and visit with breeders from across the state at the state fair open show. One of the highlights of the show was the drawing of a raffle ticket for the Traeger grill. This was a fundraiser for the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association (KLBA). They would like to

thank Heritage Tractor of Baldwin City, Kansas, for donating the grill, and Ed Anderson for obtaining the donation. Alan Eggenberger of Berryton, Kansas, was the lucky recipient of the grill. In Memoriam

Phil Shipman, 66, lost his battle with cancer September 29, 2017, at his home in rural Girard, Kansas. Services were held October 2, 2017, at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard. Shipman was born and raised in rural Girard, graduating from high school in 1968. He attended Pittsburg State University, Northeastern A&M College in Miami, Oklahoma, and Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. Phil, and his wife, Joyce, owned and operated Shipman Cattle Company near Girard. He also served in the Kansas National Guard. Phil was a member of the United Methodist Church in Girard, the National Farmers Organization, the Kansas Livestock Association, the North American Limousin Foundation, the Heartland Limousin Association, and the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association (KLBA). He was inducted into the KLBA “Hall of Fame” in 2016. He was also a 4-H leader for more than 25 years and was awarded the “Million Miles Award” by the U.S. Postal Service. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, attending cattle shows, athletic events and traveling to Branson, Missouri. Phil is survived by his wife, Joyce; his daughter, Lacey (D.J.) McCarley of Girard; his sons Jered (Haley) Shipman of Grandview, Texas and Branon (Sheila) Shipman of Webb City, Missouri; nine grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

David Darrell Klamm, 88, of rural Bonner Spring, Kansas, passed away September 7, 2017. Services were held September 11 at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home in Bonner Springs. He is the father of Karen (Chris) Campbell of Tonganoxie, Kansas. He was a fourth-generation farmer, working on the same farm that had been owned by the family since the 1860s. David was a charter member of the Leavenworth County Cooperative, he served on the local school board for eight years, was a member of the Leavenworth County Agriculture Committee, was a lifelong supporter of the Leavenworth County 4-H, and a Leavenworth County 4-H Memory Lane Honoree. David is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy, four children; Andy (Liz) of Hutchinson, Tony (Jeanette) of Bonner Springs, Martin (DeAnna) of Parsons, TN and Karen (Chris) Campbell of Tonganoxie, KS; 10 grandchildren and other friends and relatives.

In Memoriam Max Ratliff, 82, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away October 1, 2017. Services were held October 5, 2017 at the First Christian Church in Garnett, Kansas. He graduated from high school in Westphalia, Kansas, in 1952. He then attended Reisch American School of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa. Max served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. He and his wife, Margaret, owned and operated the Anderson County Sales Company for many years. It is the oldest self-supporting public auction in Kansas, which is now owned by his son Ron Ratliff and his wife, Christy. Max was a member of the Kansas Livestock Association, the Livestock Marketing Association, Mirza Shrine Temple, and Masonic Lodge #44. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret; two sons, Ron (Christy) Ratliff of Garnett, Kansas, Randy Ratliff of Nashville, Tennessee; two brothers, Gail Ratliff of Westphalia, Kansas, Bill (Barbara) Ratliff of Garnett, Kansas; a sister, Jeanie Thompson of McLouth, Kansas; many other family members and friends.

Kansas News… Limousin Wins Reserve Supreme Bull and Female Banners at the Kansas State Fair Maycee The Kansas State Fair Limousin open show was Thursday, September 14, 2017, at the State Fair Prairie Pavilion in Hutchinson. The breed shows are on a rotational system, and after showing on Saturday for several years, the Limousin show has now been moved back to Thursday. Judge Kevin Rose of Salem, Illinois, commented on the quality set of cattle exhibited by the Kansas breeders. The grand champion purebred female and grand champion Lim-Flex bull, exhibited by Maycee and Madison

Ratliff of Westphalia, took home the Reserve Supreme grand champion titles in the Supreme drive Saturday, September 16. Maycee Ratliff also won the grand champion banner in the 4-H show September 9 with her crossbred market steer. The duo also teamed up to win the Limousin show at the 2017 Kansas Junior Livestock Show September 30. She went on to be named Supreme Heifer Overall Breeds. McKenna Richardson of Eureka, Kansas, exhibited the reserve grand champion Limousin female.

Minnesota News… Livestock Interview Winner Amber Johnson, Wadena County, was one of the thirteen 4-H Beef Interview winners at the 2017 Minnesota State Fair. The livestock interviews are designed to further enhance educational opportunities for young people exhibiting livestock. They are also a way of recognizing 4-Hers who have utilized their livestock project to grow and develop as young people. These interviews emphasize many life skills such as communication, responsibility, decision making, and problem-solving. Each recipient receives a Sullivan Supply certificate sponsored by Sullivan Supply/MLBA, and a chair sponsored by the Minnesota Livestock Breeders Association (MLBA).

Scholarship Recipient Amber Johnson was also a recipient of a $2,000 scholarship award given by Cargill. The Minnesota Livestock Breeders’ Association (MLBA) Scholarship is presented each year to

4-H and FFA youth who are active members and exhibitors during the year of application. The participants are selected on leadership experience and personal growth achievements. Additionally, the scholarship rewards academic excellence and outstanding livestock production. This year the MLBA awarded a total of $65,000 in scholarships to 41 outstanding youth. The fund comes from donations matched by the MLBA purple ribbon auction proceeds.

4-H and FFA Results Congratulations to the juniors who exhibited their Limousin animals at the Minnesota State Fair 4-H and FFA shows. Taking home the 4-H grand champion banner with his Market Beef was Jordan Hoover of Rice County. He was also a participant in the Purple Ribbon Auction. Zachary Sleiter of Stevens County exhibited the reserve grand champion Market Beef.

Words from the President “Tubb” had a very interesting letter in the Member Directory with his thoughts on being a member of a state association. He said, “The singular purpose, or mission, of any state Limousin association is to PROMOTE Limousin cattle. The tools you may use are field days, shows, sales, area breeder maps and local advertising.” “Tubb” also stated, “A state Limousin association is an organization made up of committed volunteers who are caught up in a mission that they believe in. They make a personal investment of their time and talent. They experience joy found in giving of themselves to each other for a common cause.” He went on to say, “Don’t just join, but give yourself to the state association. Only then will you discover what’s in it for you. There’s tremendous power in truly committed people. The success or failure of any association is determined entirely by the time and talent volunteered by the breeders.”

Missouri News… LAG Industries Showcases Products

Thank You We would like to thank everyone who helped with the hamburger fry following the Open Show at the Missouri State Fair. A large crowd of Limousin enthusiasts were in the stands watching the show, exhibiting cattle and helping with the meal. A special thanks to Pam and Greg Callahan and their family for organizing the meal, providing the meat, and helping serve the food. We appreciate T.J., Kari and Jake Callahan for grilling the burgers. We also thank everyone who brought side dishes to go with the burgers. It was a great way to end the show at the fair!

In Memoriam Jeff Steele, age 53, of Unionville, Missouri, passed away at his home September 25, 2017, following a 10-year battle with cancer. Services were held September 29 at the Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home in Unionville. He was born in Centerville, Iowa, and grew up on the family farm. He attended Putnam County R-1 High School where he was active in track and FFA, earning his State Farmer’s Degree from FFA in 1982. Jeff and his family were actively engaged in raising Limousin cattle. His son, Josh, and his daughter, Danielle, showed cattle in their teenage years at the Putnam County Fair and at shows across the Midwest. Jeff and his Dad, Garold

LAG Industries was formed in 2015 with the idea that they would open their own steel fabrication shop. The name evolved from the first letters of the names of Brad and Nicole’s children; Lane, August and Gracie. The Brackman’s purchased a 260’ x 50’ building just outside La Monte, Missouri, focusing on providing quality products. Among the products that they offer are customized livestock feeding systems such

as feed bunks and cradle style hay feeders, continuous fencing, squeeze chutes, adjustable alleyways, cornerless tubs, gates, portable panels, and other livestock equipment for cattle, and sheep/goats. All of their equipment is built in their facility. They also purchased a CNC Plasma Table and Cutter and a CNC Plate Roller. This enables them to do custom fabrication on many items as well as custom metal wall art, yard signs, fire rings, farm signs, and other custom work. Steele, joined the North American Limousin Foundation early in the beginning of that association and he was also a member of the Heartland Limousin Association. He worked as a Plant Food manager, first for MFA and then for Fowler Elevator. He is described as being a hard worker, honest beyond reproach and he always kept his word. He knew how to make life and family fun, and he had a forgiving spirit. Jeff is survived by his wife of 33 years, Angie; his daughter, Danielle (David) Luchsinger, his granddaughter, Danica Sue Luchsinger; his parents, Garold and Sharon Steele; his brother, Jim (Liz) Steele; and a sister, Barb (Jerry) Tilden, all of Unionville, Missouri, many other relatives and friends.

Missouri News… Missouri State Fair Open Show Titles Awarded The Missouri State Fair was held Saturday, August 19, 2017, in Sedalia. Judge Cody Lowderman of Macomb, Illinois, evaluated the 70 head of

females and bulls brought to the state fair by 35 exhibitors from Missouri, Kansas, and North Carolina.

Missouri News… Champions Selected at Missouri State Fair 4-H and FFA Shows The Missouri 4-H Limousin and FFA shows took place August 18, 2017, in the Missouri State Fair Donley Arena. Jeff Rhode of Stewartville,

Missouri, served as the judge for both shows. A total of 28 juniors took part in these shows.

Nebraska News… Husker/Harvest Days Hunt Limousin Ranch of Oxford exhibited cattle for the 33rd year in a row at this year’s Husker/Harvest Days in Grand Island. They brought three bull calves and two heifers for display. They also had information concerning Limousin cattle and a large TV with videos showing their cattle in the pasture. There are approximately 600 exhibits on display, making it one of the largest agriculture shows in the nation. RFDTV was there to cover the action.

Cattlemen’s Classic The 2018 Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic will be held February 17-25 at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney. The Classic features 12

breed shows and sales, the “Battle of the Breeds,” a prospect steer sale, a junior show, a commercial pen of 5 heifer sale, a commercial trade show, a rustic market place, a ranch horse competition and sale, draft horse feed team races, a career fair, and a beef cooking contest. New this year are fees/commission for animals that are entered into the shows and sales. There will be a $150 catalog advertising fee, per animal, and the sale commission rate will be fixed at nine percent. There will also be a $150 fee for consignments of embryos, flushes, semen packages, and pregnant recips with an eight percent commission, the pen of 5 heifers will invoice a $250 fee and a five and a half percent

commission, and the fancy heifer and steer sale will be a $150 catalog fee with a six percent commission. Nebraska News… Nebraska State Fair Crowns Limousin Champions Limousin breeders from Nebraska, Minnesota and Kansas brought a quality set of bulls and females to the Nebraska State Fair Limousin Open Show in Grand Island August 30, 2017. The show

was judged by Brandon Callis of Minco, Oklahoma. Many of these same breeders spent a week in Grand Island in July when they attended the 2017 NALJA “Escape to Grand Island” show.

NALF Nominates Board Members The NALF nominating committee has slated the candidates for the 2018 board of directors election. The election will be held during the NALF annual membership meeting Monday morning, January 8, 2018, in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show. Three members from Heartland states are on the ballot for the NALF Board.

Show Association. This year’s top point winner for the Limousin heifer competition was Alexa Montagne of Elk Point. Mitchell Schmidt of Willow Lake was the high point winner in the Limousin steer point contest. This show was organized to recognize youth who participate in showing livestock throughout the state of South Dakota. Points are awarded to exhibitors, not each individual animal, based on placing in each breed class at different sanctioned shows across the state.

South Dakota State Fair Has Early Show on a Rainy Day The South Dakota State Fair open Limousin show was held in Huron September 1, 2017. Eleven breeders from South Dakota and Iowa exhibited their females and bulls on a rainy day. The rain was a welcome sight for those in the western part of the state who have endured a severe drought this summer. Brent Murphy of Houstonia, Missouri, judged the show which began at 8:00 a.m. Several breeders from across the state came to watch and support their fellow Limousin exhibitors.

Wisconsin News... Limousin Breeders from Several Wisconsin State Fair 4-H Results The Wisconsin State Fair 4-H show was held August 8, 2017, at the state States Exhibit at World Beef Expo fairgrounds in West Allis. Breeders from Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, and Wisconsin, traveled to the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds in West Allis for the 25th Anniversary World Beef Expo September 22-24, 2017. The fairgrounds were buzzing with activity with a record number of cattle along with open and junior shows, showmanship, the youth sweepstakes contest, the Elite All-Breeds Sale, and a trade show. Another highlight of the Expo was the fitting clinic put on by Garrett Lampe and Cori Malone, Stock Show University sponsored by Sullivan Supply.

The Limousin open show was held Saturday, September 23. Tyler Cates of Modoc, Indiana, served as the judge for Ring 1; and John Toledo of Visalia, California, judged the cattle in Ring 2. The Supreme Champion Drive was held Saturday evening following the conclusion of the open shows. Judges for the junior show Sunday, September 24 were Dr. Scott Schaake of Manhattan, Kansas, in Ring 1; and Tyler Winegardner of Lima, Ohio, in Ring 2.

Fullblood News… Fullblood Limousin Alliance Holds Meeting in Kentucky Members of the Fullblood Limousin Alliance (FLA) traveled to Bowling Green, Kentucky, for a meeting October 6, 2017. The board met in the afternoon followed by the membership meeting in the evening. Laura Ray discussed the FLA website, www.fullbloodalliance.org, and the number of “hits” it has received in the past month. She encouraged members to make use of the website to promote their cattle. Juniors who show Fullbood cattle at the NALJA shows are given $250 to help with the entry fees and expenses during the week. We hope to have more participation in the show next summer in Denver, Colorado. A silent auction was held Friday and Saturday in Bowling Green to raise funds for the junior program. Thanks to everyone who supported the juniors with their donations and bids. Nominations for officers were presented and they are: Stephen Haynes, president; Bob Stone, vice president; Joe Latendressee, treasurer; and Kim Kosmicke, secretary. Six people were nominated for the two open seats on the board of directors. They are: Ken Ragsdell, Betty Williamson, Tom Anderson, Kevin Christensen, Ron Coger and Ryan

Reed. Ballots will be mailed to all paid members of the FLA. They can either be mailed in or brought to the next meeting in January. In Memoriam Richard A.L. Vorthmann, 96, of Treynor, Iowa, passed away October 10, 2017, at Risen Son Christian Village. Services were held Friday, October 13 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Treynor. He was born and raised on the family farm and graduated from Trynor High School. He was a lifetime farmer, a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, a member of the Treynor Optimist Club, the Westfair Board of Directors, and was a township clerk. Richard enjoyed fishing, playing cards and school sporting events. His family was honored as a WOW Farm Family of the Week and Richard was featured in the television series “Profile of a Farmer.” A highlight for Richard was being recognized at the 2016 Iowa State Fair as the “Iowan of the Day.” He is survived by two sons, Roger (Ann) Vorthmann and Bill (Ann) Vorthmann, daughter, Lynette (Doug) Steele, seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of other family and friends.

Heartland Sale Reports LV Bar Ranch Holds First Sale in Plainville

V Bar Ranch of Plainville, Kansas, the southern division of Lonely Valley Seedstock of Creston, Nebraska, held their first Limousin and Lim-Flex production sale at the Plainville Livestock Auction Saturday, September 16, 2017. The Settje Family, owners, have committed the last 30-plus years in the production and promotion of Limousin cattle. Their new division, named LV Bar Ranch, managed by Mike Smith and his family, will serve as another location and source for commercial and purebred cattlemen alike. Customer service is their number one priority. They offered free delivery to central locations anywhere in the lower 48 states and also free financing to any qualified buyer through the year 2017. Their website, www.lonelyvalley.com, will give up-to-date information on what is going on at the Lonely Valley location in Nebraska as well as the LV Bar Ranch in Kansas. The sale was held in the new Plainville Livestock Auction. The sale featured the dispersal of the entire fall-calving cowherd. This was done to simplify the operation and focus on the spring-calving cowherd. Bidding took place by those in attendance as well as those online. Auctioneer Bruce Brooks began the sale at 12:30 and by 4:00 p.m., 232 lots had sold to buyers from across the country. Semen packages were offered on LVLS Bank Account 8116B, a 1/24/14 son of MAGS Wazowksi out of LVLS Wilma 8116W. Heartland Sale Reports Gaston 7 Cross Holds Fall Spectacular Inaugural Production Sale

aston’s 7 Cross Ranch held their Fall Spectacular Inaugural Elite Seedstock Production Sale September 23, 2017, at the ranch near Caledonia, Missouri with guest consignors: Buck Ridge Cattle Co. of Rogersville, Missouri; M&R Limousin of Bourbon, Missouri; T Hill Limousin of Dover, Arkansas; Grandview Acres Limousin Farm of Rogers, Arkansas; Owen Cattle Co. of Hornbeak, Tennessee; Riverside Valley Farm of Hohenwald, Tennessee; and Linhart Limousin of Leon, Iowa. A warm day greeted the sale goers to the Gaston’s 7 Cross Ranch with temperatures in southeastern Missouri nearing 100 degrees. This was unusual for this late in September. The sale featured Limousin, Lim-Flex, Angus, and Sim-Angus bulls, pairs, and open heifers. In addition, 70 commercial females were also offered. The majority of the commercial females were AI’d by top studs from Genex and Select Sires. Rick Gaston was the 2016 Missouri Limousin Breeders Association “Commercial Producer of the Year.” He has been in the cattle business for 35 years raising commercial cattle. He began using Lim-Flex

genetics to increase the quality of his herd using AI and ET techniques. A unique feature to the sale was the judging of seven pens of three heifers offered for sale. The buyer of the lead heifer in the “Pen of Three” heifers, picked by the judge, and the seller of that pen split a $1,300 jackpot. The winning pen was consigned by Buck Ridge Farms. The buyer of the lead heifer in that pen was Mark Barker, Diamond Hill Cattle Co. of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, who purchased HBRL Diamond 6120D, an 8/22/16 homozygous polled, homozygous black Lim-Flex 56% daughter of MAGS Zodiac out of SBLX Zconcept for $3,800. Fosdick Cattle of Fairbury, Illinois, purchased the high-selling pregnant recip, a Lim-Flex 38% double polled, double black sired by BSF Hot Lotto 1401 out of MAGS Walkin consigned by Linhart Limousin for $3,500. Gates Limousin of Absorkee, Montana, purchased three IVF Embryos consigned by Gaston’s 7 Cross Ranch for $400 each. The Lim-Flex 50% embryos will be doubled polled, double black sired by SAV Ten Speed 3022 out of HBRL Xcuse Me 004X.

Heartland Sale Reports Vorthmann Limousin Sells Cattle into Seven States

orthmann Limousin of Treynor, Iowa, held their 15th annual “Focus on Family Values” private treaty sale Saturday, September 30, 2017. Buyers from Iowa, Colorado, Louisiana, Nebraska, Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin bid in person or on the phone on the females, bulls and steers offered by Roger, Ann and Deb Vorthmann. It was a beautiful day in Iowa for the sale, which was held at the farm. Bidding began at 10:00 a.m. and the sale ended at 2:00 p.m. with the “bid-off ” of the contending bidders. Bidding was brisk on the top-selling bull, Alter Ego, a 1/15/13 black, homozygous polled Lim-Flex 75% son of EF Xcessive Force out of CJSL Tequila Sunrise 7003. Brad Davis of Brownwood, Texas, and Counsil Family Limousin of Madisonville, Texas, had the final bid of $8,000 for full possession and one-half semen interest.

Lammert Farms of Treynor, Iowa, purchased VL Empower 712E, a 2/2/17 red, homozygous polled son of Alter Ego out of TREF X-Plicit 688X for $4,750. VL Dice 646D, a 4/18/16 black, homozygous polled son of Alter Ego out of VL Zarah 2214Z was purchased by Steve and Fritz Baier of Griswold, Iowa, for $4,500. The top-selling open female was VL Empress 743E, a 5/2/17 double black, homozygous polled Lim-Flex 69% daughter of Alter Ego out of AUTO Woodsey 429Z. There was a lot of bidding on this heifer, including several on the phone. Logan Chachere, a repeat buyer of Dayton, Texas, won the bid-off with a final bid of $9,750. Rod Vogel of Tipton, Ohio, purchased VL Eve 703E, a 1/21/17 red, double polled daughter of Alter Ego out of VL Wixie for $4,500.

Also bringing $4,500 on the sale was VL Easy on the Eyes 713E, a 2/10/17 double black, double polled daughter of Alter Ego out of VL Aretha 317A. She was purchased by Audrey Brawner of Wood Lake, Nebraska. Volume buyers included Casey and her sister, Allison Black of Treynor, Iowa, who took home four steers; Nick Duckett of Grimes, Iowa, who bought a heifer and two steers; and the Baier family who purchased a bull and a heifer. he 2018 International Limousin Congress (ILC), hosted by the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF), will be held in Denver, Colorado, July 19-27. This international event is held every two years. It began in France in 1973 and has traveled to numerous countries, including: Argentina, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Denmark, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, Canada, France, and the United States. The main objective of this organization is to network with the world’s elite Limousin breeders while coordinating international research efforts and highlighting efforts that have been made for the benefit of the Limousin breed throughout the world. The ILC prides itself on being an event that not only serves as an opportunity to exchange industry knowledge, but also a memorable experience to learn about a new culture while gaining lasting friendships. This year the United States will serve as the host country. Among the highlights will be a visit to the Rocky Mountain National Park where the guests will have an opportunity to view the wildlife and scenery; a stop at the Greeley Hat Works, which started back in 1909, and continues today providing custom-made hats; a trip

to the Cheyenne Frontier Days where participants will attend the rodeo, which has been an annual event in Wyoming since 1897; and a tour of the 70 Ranch which is working together with Colorado State University scientists to study the use of subsurface drop irrigation and its impact on crops and water usage. There will also be tours of Limousin ranches, feedlots and research facilities. Some of the Colorado hosts will be Kevin Ochsner, host of NCBA’s Cattlemen to Cattlemen program on RFDTV, and his family; Magness Land & Cattle, who purchased their first Limousin bulls back in 1981; and Running Creek Ranch, who have been producing cattle for 36 years. Heartland Sale Reports The Foundation III Sale Attracts Buyers from Several States

This pair was consigned by Double R Limousin of Richmond, Kansas. The top-selling open female was Denison Poll Dylana, a 5/1/16 polled Fullblood daughter of PUB out of Denison Poll Barbara consigned by Denison Limousin of Kingston, Ontario. Bidding was brisk on this popular female, and when the final gavel came down, Jason Tabor of Princeton, West Virginia, had the bid at $5,000. The top-selling bull was ACHH New Cotton 175C, a 4/25/15 homozygous polled Fullblood son of FSV Polled Newstar 730X out of CCPV Yevon. He was consigned by A C H Holdings LLC and purchased by James Caraway of Princeton, Kentucky, for $3,400.

Melburn Wood of Ringgold, Louisiana, purchased this female for $5,200. He was the volume buyer with 19 lots. Wood also bought the two other top-selling bred females in the sale. JL Tristy 221Y, a 10/17/11 polled Fullblood daughter of Posthaven Polled Tristan out of JL Poll Maggie, consigned by Jarnagin Limousin, was purchased for $5,000. She sold bred to JL Markssman 65C. Elmgrove Carolina, a 4/14/16 horned Fullblood daughter of Pub out of Gold Manor Allison bred to Posthaven Yellowstone HP, consigned by Elm Grove Limousin of Elora, Ontario, brought $4,900 from Melburn Wood.
