Start Thinking About Marketing Calves Tips for Calculations

N

ow is the time to start thinking about marketing opportunities for calves this fall. While prices are well below what was received last year at this time, considerations can be given to the seasonal aspects of feeder cattle prices and the opportunities that may exist to utilize risk management tools. Seasonal increases in feeder cattle prices have occurred in late July and early August during 10 of the past 14 years. Analyzing summer feeder cattle

sales and the futures market in July helps determine the outlook of prices this fall. A run up in prices may create an opportunity to purchase Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) for feeder cattle during a time when prices are seasonally higher than entering into the fall run. Additional information on utilizing LRP can be found in the Neb-Guide, “Livestock Risk Protection Insurance for Fed Cattle.” When evaluating whether to retain or sell calves, value of gain becomes

an important factor. Value of gain is calculated as the difference in final and initial value of the animal, divided by the pounds of weight gain. The example below demonstrates how to calculate the value of gain of a 600-lb. steer that will be grown to reach 850 lbs. by the end of the backgrounding phase: • Initial value: 600-lb. steer at $1.45/lb. = $870 • Final value: 850-lb. steer at $1.30/lb. = $1,105 • Difference in value: $1,105 - $870 = $235 • Weight gain: 850 lbs. – 600 lbs. = 250 lbs. • Value of gain: $235/250 lbs. = $.94/lb. Retained ownership of calves is a cost-effective option when value of gain is greater than cost of gain. Backgrounding provides an opportunity to grow calves to heavier weights using inexpensive byproducts, forages, or crop residues. Calves can then be sold at a more favorable time after the surplus of newly-weaned calves is sold in the fall. Continued on page 3

Vol. 24 • Issue 4 • Sept/Oct 2016 Continued from front cover Average cost of gain summarized by Kansas State University Extension for Kansas feedyards in April averaged $81.65/cwt. For 32,178 steers with an incoming weight of 789 lbs. and out weight of 1,388 lbs. This compares to average cost of gain for steers in 2015 of $85.15/cwt., 2014 of $92.35/cwt., and 2013 of $120.07/cwt. The higher costs of gain were driven primarily by higher corn prices, which averaged $4.16, $4.70 and $6.72 per bushel in 2015, 2014, and 2013 respectively. Cattle feeders have remained current in their marketing in the second quarter. Rather than holding

on to cattle, feeders have kept pace in marketing and packers have increased slaughter resulting in slaughter weights below last year. The five-area weekly weighted average steer price has traded below the five-year average for much of the last three months. The Cattle on Feed report for June reported the greatest number of cattle on feed since 2011. Developing and maintaining a marketing strategy will better assist producers in achieving production objectives and managing risk. For more information on creating a marketing plan, see “Marketing plans for your livestock operation” on the University of Nebraska Extension website.

Good Luck with your fall sales.

t doesn’t seem possible that the 2016 summer is about over. Typical summer weather was the norm. Hot and sunny weather along with cool and rainy days mixed in provided a good growing season for most of

the Heartland. However, pockets of unusual drought dotted the landscape. Many areas of South Dakota seemed to be the driest, prompting early hay feeding and some ranchers moved cattle to greener pastures.

$1.50. The futures on feeder calves for October were up $2.00 per hundred. The average retail beef prices fell almost $.75 based on five cuts of beef over the end of July price check. I am in no way predicting the future as next week could be completely different. It was happening on the one day I checked. The junior Limousin field days along with the Heartland Regional and NALJA summer show filled our summer with travel and great experiences. I personally believe that the great benefit of summer shows rests in the junior arena. Young people learn a great deal of responsibility, as well as knowledge of the industry.

It is hard to figure out the livestock markets these days. Early predictions of cattle falling to below the $1.00 per lb. prices put a damper on all sectors of the beef industry. I spot check prices on a regular basis, but we all need to remember that the price is only good for one day and does not indicate a trend. Prices fluctuate on a weekly basis, but it was good to see that the prices were up as of August 4. Commodity fat cattle were holding at around $1.16 with autumn futures slightly higher. Dressed beef prices were at $1.88. Selling on a natural grid seemed to be an advantage. Feeder prices for 600-weight weaned calves were hovering around

Thank you to Cole Abele and Dennis Alt of Double Land & Cattle, MO, for their donation to the 2017 NALJA Show in Grand Island, NE, sponsored by the Heartland Limousin Association.

Mission Statement of the Heartland Limousin Association The purpose for which the HLA is organized is to serve as a service organization designed to promote and further enhance the Limousin breed of cattle in the seven state area comprised of IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, SD and WI. The goals for the Association shall include promotion, strengthening state and junior associations within the region; development of a regional publication; improvement of communication and a unified attitude of breeders; to provide market information and expertise; to serve as a coordinator of events between the Association and the industry; to increase breeder involvement; and to strengthen ties between the NALF and the Heartland Limousin Association.

Vol. 24 • Issue 4 • Sept/Oct 2016 Our thanks goes out to the Kentucky Limousin Association for hosting a great event. The summer NALJA show attracted juniors from 21 states. The camaraderie was exceptional among the juniors as they competed and played together. The Kentucky Horse Park provided a beautiful landscape as a background to the Alltech Arena, located on the park’s grounds in Lexington. Our appreciation goes out to the Missouri Limousin Breeders Association for hosting the Heartland Regional in Springfield. The very successful weekend of activities had 118 head of cattle from 73 exhibitors. Also, we extend our great appreciation to the Limousin family for supporting the Jordan Muxfeldt Memorial project. Over $25,000 has been raised. Thanks to all who supported the memorial project. We took a week off in July to cruise to Alaska for fun and relaxation. The glaciers in Glacier Bay were spectacular and it was especially interesting to listen to the thunder and watch as the “calving” took place. The native culture is very interesting. The month of August was filled trips to five State Fair Limousin shows. Corn dogs get old after so many fairs.

5

The Linhart and Straight families of Leon and Logan, IA, received the HLA silhouettes during the special presentation at the Jordan Muxfeldt Memorial Auction in Springfield. The Heartland is busy planning the 2017 NALJA summer show to be held in Grand Island, Nebraska, July 1-7. We will be asking each Heartland state to volunteer some time during the week to ensure a successful event. The Nebraska State Fair livestock facilities are top-notch

in the Midwest. Plan to attend the show and “Escape to Grand Island.” Beverly and I are looking forward to the autumn activities of fairs, sales, and junior shows. We are getting “long in the tooth,” but still appreciate the opportunity to serve the Heartland members.

Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to promote Limousin genetics in this region. See you down the road.

T

he summer months have flown by, and now it’s time to work on the September/October Heart Beat. We don’t put out a July/August issue so it’s nice to have a little time away from the computer typing articles, proofing reports and writing captions for the many photos in the paper. Dean and I traveled to Alaska, the Last Frontier, July 23-30. We had a

great time despite the chilly and rainy weather. It was 104 degrees on the car thermometer the day we drove to the airport. The day after we returned it was in the upper 90s with high humidity. That is quite a contrast to the 50 degree temperatures we had in the 49th state. The sun finally came out as we sailed from Ketchikan, Alaska, to Victoria, British Columbia, on the last full day of the trip.

Homegrown Apple Tart with Caramel Sauce Ingredients:

Caramel Sauce:

6 T. oleo margarine

6 T. sugar

1½ tsp. cinnamon

¾ cup butter

1½ cups sugar

6 T. brown sugar

1 ½ tsp. nutmeg

1 ½ tsp. vanilla

2 eggs

6 T. heavy whipping cream

½ tsp. salt

*Simmer for 10 minutes.

1½ cups flour

*Add vanilla, serve over warm tart.

3 to 4 cups chopped apples

Sheryl Leonard of Holstein, Iowa, and her recipes were featured in the July 16, 2016, edition of the Iowa Farmer Today newspaper. We enjoyed a delicious lunch with Sheryl and Mark and can attest to the statement that she is a gourmet cook. This recipe was printed in the Iowa Farmer.

The three ports in Alaska are all very unique. Juneau, the state capital, is known for the Mendenhall Glacier, whale watching, and the Red Dog Saloon. Skagway, a town where the spirit of the “Gold Rush” shines, features trips into the Yukon Territory to view wildlife and the amazing scenery on the White Pass Railway. Ketchikan, known as the “Salmon Capital of the World,” showcases “Creek Street” and the totem poles. Victoria, British Columbia, is a beautiful city steeped in English tradition. Butchart Gardens are known world-wide, and the capital city boasts prominent reminders of its colonial past. The highlight of the trip was the day spent cruising in Glacier Bay National Park. The two glaciers, Margerie and Lamphlugh, were spectacular. The cloudy, foggy day

did not diminish the bright blue colors. It was exciting to hear the thunderous booms followed by chunks of ice falling into the ocean— calving. Park Rangers bordered the ship and gave a very interesting commentary on what we were seeing along the way. It was also a challenge to watch for and spot whales and dolphins in the area. We also enjoyed listening to the talks given by Michael Modzelewski, author, naturalist and speaker. He grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and left the city life to live in the Alaskan wilderness. He spoke about life on the Last Frontier, the Glaciers, the Alaskan Wildlife, and the Native People. One evening we were entertained by Libby Riddles, the first woman to win the famous Iditarod Sled Dog Race, as she discussed her many adventures. Of course, one of the best parts of a cruise is the amount of “pampering”

1½ tsp. baking soda Directions: *Cream margarine and sugar. *Add eggs and dry ingredients. *Add apples, but don’t stir too much. *Pour into 9x13-inch pan and bake at 350 degree for 35-40 minutes.

State Fair Coverage will appear in the November/December issue of Heart Beat.

The room stewards work very hard to make sure your cabin is freshened up every day and ready for bed at night, with chocolates on the pillow. Jerry and Norma Effertz of Velva, North Dakota, brought their family to help them celebrate their 50th anniversary. Curt and Leanne Wieczorek of Mount Vernon, South Dakota, enjoyed their first cruise with his sister and brother-in-law.

There were a total of 21 in our group and we had a nice time relaxing, visiting with everyone, and enjoying the amenities on the ship, the Crown Princess. The biggest surprise Dean and I had was meeting up with Dean’s cousin and wife, Brad and Kay Maurer from Spencer, Iowa. We did not know they were going on the cruise, and spotted them right after we boarded the ship. Needless to say, it made for a memorable trip to be able to spend time with friends and family!

Member News Get well wishes are sent to Herman Symens of Sisseton, South Dakota. He had back surgery in July and will be recuperating for several months. We wish him a speedy recovery. Marion Nutter of Thedford, Nebraska, fell and broke her arm/ wrist in July. She had surgery and is recovering. Our thoughts are with several members who are undergoing treatment for health related issues: Jon Moser of Morris, Minnesota; Phil Shipman of Girard, Kansas, and Mashelle Trimble of Unionville, Missouri. We also are keeping Grayhm Beck in our prayers as he undergoes tests for his heart and lung problems. He is the son of Alycia and Jamie Watts of Fairfield, Nebraska. Congratulations to the many couples who have had babies over the spring and summer months. Several photos are printed in the Heart Beat. Our sympathy is extended to the members of the Limousin family who

have lost loved ones these past few months. There are several obituaries printed on the state news pages. Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers. Our thoughts are with Mike Christie of Baldwin City, Kansas, He had a liver transplant in June. We wish him well as he continues on the road to recovery. Judy Symens of Sisseton, South Dakota, was hospitalized in July after experiencing shortness of breath. Sarah Al-Mazroa Interns in Washington, D.C. Sarah Al-Mazroa, daughter of Paul and Darla Millhollin of Winterset, Iowa, interned with Iowa’s Senator Joni Ernst in Washington, D.C. this past July. The goal of this internship was to understand more about legislative issues going on in the agriculture industry. Sarah assisted with research projects, interacted with Iowa constituents, worked with agriculture legislative assistants throughout many state offices, and shadowed Joni Ernst herself. Sarah said it was a great way to see what was going on in our government and what representatives from the Midwest are doing to help agriculture succeed. Sarah said,“It was a huge change going to Washington, D.C. I have lived in Iowa my whole life, so to be half-way across

the country was exciting and ner ve-racking all at the same time. I truly had no idea what I was going to be doing when I got to the office. My experience in Washington, D.C. reinforced how blessed I am to be in an industry that thinks about others and will fight to see that everyone in this world will be provided a safe and wholesome meal.” She is an alumni of the Iowa State University Animal Science Department and is currently a graduate student in Agricultural Education at Iowa State University in Ames. Sarah’s goals are to help advocate for agriculture focusing on legislative issues.

Richard Vorthmann Named State Fair “Iowan of the Day” Richard Vorthmann, 95, of Treynor, Iowa, was selected as a state fair “Iowan of the Day.” He was recognized at a ceremony on the Anne and Bill Riley stage Tuesday, August 16, 2016. In addition, he was also given tickets to the state fair, accommodations at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown, grandstand tickets, a cash prize, and use of the “Iowan of the Day” golf cart. Founded in 1997, the “Iowan of the Day” program allows the Blue Ribbon Foundation to recognize Iowa’s most outstanding individuals. The program continues to honor Iowans across the state who have made a difference in others’ lives while upholding the characteristics associated with Iowadependability, integrity, hard work, and sense of community. Described as a pillar of the community, Richard has served for 35 years as a township trustee and clerk, he was co-chairman of the Treynor school reorganization committee, and he helped build the first tanker truck for the local fire department. Richard

has also been extremely involved in his church and the Optimist Club. He received the “Optimist of the Year” award in 2003. Richard served as a 4-H leader for 25 years and was on the fair board for 35 years. He was a member of the fair board when it purchased the 80 acres to build a new fairgrounds and he helped with the building improvement projects. Richard also served as the beef and 4-H sale superintendent at the fair. He was the first “Honorary Member of Westfair.”

Dave and Dawson Book Featured on Channel 6 News Dave Book and his son, Dawson, were interviewed on KWQC, Channel 6 News, out of Davenport, Iowa. The news clip was taken at the Mississippi Valley Fair July 6, 2016. The news report featured 4-H youth washing and blow drying their cattle. Dawson took first in his class with his steer. He explained what has to be done in preparation for the show and sale, and he was very detailed in his description. His father, Dave, talked about the value of families working, growing and learning together, both on the farm and at the fairs and shows.

Dave went on to say that the more time you spend with your animal, the more they will do what you want them to do. The work ethic that young people learn when taking on livestock projects gives them lifelong skills.

Kaitlyn Boyer Named “Star Over Iowa” Winner in Ag Production Kaitlyn Boyer, daughter of Jason and Amy Boyer of Weldon, Iowa, was one of four students selected in four different categories to receive the prestigious “Star Over Iowa” award. The awards were given for Agricultural Placement, Agriscience,

Agribusiness and Agricultural Production. The finalists were selected from a pool of 693 FFA members. This award is the highest honor the Iowa FFA Association can bestow upon an FFA member. The Star awards recognize students who have developed outstanding agricultural skills and competencies through their career development programs and have demonstrated outstanding management skills. The finalists were interviewed and their SAE record books were reviewed by a panel of judges.

The 2016 “Stars Over Iowa” winners were announced at the 88th Iowa FFA State Leadership Conference on April 19, 2016. Kaitlyn, the winner of the Ag Production award, is a member of the Osceola Big Chief FFA Chapter. Her SAE focuses on raising high-quality registered Limousin cattle from “pasture to plate.” At the age of 11, Kaitlyn purchased her first Limousin heifer and has now grown her herd to 32 head. Her cattle are used in the family business, making and selling beef sticks, and other beef products. They sell their products at

the Harvest Barn and the Farmer’s Market in Des Moines. Her breeding stock are sold at the Iowa Beef Expo as well as privately. Kaitlyn also keeps busy managing the farm website, Facebook page and creating advertisements. She is an advocate for the beef industry, speaking at events like the Iowa Cattlemen’s Convention. Kaitlyn plans to attend Iowa State University, majoring in Animal Science. Her goal is to continue with her education, getting a master’s degree in business.

all around weaning time is a good time to body condition your cows. This can help determine which cows should be culled and possibly sort them into groups for better management of their nutritional needs over the late fall and winter month, according to Bill Haffmanof the University of Wisconsin. Lisa’s Seefeldt, UW Extension ago agent in Marquette County and Katie Pfeiffer, former UW Extension ago agent in Sauk County developed a fact sheet to help producers body condition score their cows. hen transitioning cattle from ranch to rail, feed intake of a nutrient-dense diet is of upmost importance. Research indicates only 20 percent of cattle will eat on the day of arrival to the feed yard and by day five, only two-thirds are eating a sufficient ration from the bunk. “Shipping stress, the health and nutritional status of the calf, unfamiliar surroundings and foreign feed stuffs are all factors that can take away a new feeder’s appetite. “Subsequent poor intake during the starting phase can and will lead to morbidity and poor performance in the feed yard,” Vaughn Holder, Alltech beef specialist, said in a news release. According to Holder, there are many factors to focus on when starting cattle on feed, such as the cattle themselves, the feed stuffs utilized in the ration and the facilities in which cattle are placed. It is also imperative to know as much about the history of the cattle as possible. Records should include the

health status of the calf (vaccinations, implants, etc.), origin, nutrient status of the herd and whether a preconditioning program was used. Once placed in the feed yard, Holder suggests providing dry feed stuffs, such as long hay, to encourage calves to come to the bunk and eat. “The ration can be transitioned gradually to allow for the use of unfamiliar feed stuffs as calves become acclimated to their new environment,” Holder said. “Dry matter intake expectations will vary depending on the ingredient content of the ration and quality of the forage supply.” Producers will also want to analyze for mycotoxins in feed, he said. “Many times on the feedlot, it is not an accurate case that can be readily identified, but a chronic situation associated with the ingestion of a low level of mycotoxins over an extended period of time,” he said.

Kansas News… Annual Meeting and Field Day Held in Garnett

The Kansas Limousin Breeders Association senior and junior associations held their annual meetings Saturday, May 21, 2016. They took place in conjunction with the field day. The day’s events began with the field day at 2 p.m. followed by a delicious roast beef meal with all the fixings. We thank the Ratliff and Richardson families for serving as hosts for the field day, as well as organizing and preparing the meal. We also appreciate everyone who brought salads, desserts and other items for the dinner. Thank you to the breeders who helped sponsor the various awards at the Kansas Field Day; Troy and Jennifer Richardson, KC and Courtney Youngblood, Trevor and Pam Gum and Kyle and Terri Dye. It was a successful event. Clint Woodrow of Emporia, Kansas, served as the judged was very entertaining, especially during the showmanship classes. After the meal, the senior members gathered for their annual meeting. Clay Schilling, president, presided over the meeting. A variety of items were discussed including fundraising, raffle tickets for the Traeger grill, a breeder calendar, a seminar in Manhattan this fall, and the possibility of holding a state sale once again. The board of directors expressed an interest in holding another seminar in the fall. The subject this year would be the new Veterinary Feed Directive to be implemented in 2017. This is something that affects all farmers and ranchers. Dates and times of the seminar will be announced at a later date. Another major item on the agenda was the state sale. A suggestion was made that it be held in the

In Memoriam Louise Reams Taul, 89, of Baldwin City, Kansas, passed away July 16, 2016. She is the mother of Limousin breeders Martha (Mike) Christie, also of Baldwin City. Visitation was held July 19 followed by the graveside funeral service July 20.

southeast part of Kansas. Committee members Randy Corns, Kyle Dye, Alan Eggenberger and Pat Meek will research possible sites and dates for the sale.

Fundraisers

Ticket for the raffle for the Traeger grill are $5 for an individual ticket or a booklet of five for $20. The drawing will be held at the Kansas State Fair Open Show September 17. All ticket stubs need to be returned to Pat Meek, secretary/treasurer, one week prior to the Kansas State Fair. The association would like to put out a calendar breeders could give to their customers, it could be on display at the KLBA booth, and given out at other functions. The list of members would be included on the calendar as well as shows, sales and other Limousin events. Spots will be sold for each month.

Board of Directors

We thank Chris Campbell of Tonganoxie and Hubert Thomas of Fort Scott for serving on the KLBA board of directors. Their terms were up and they were not eligible to run again. We appreciate their service. Trevor Gum of Pittsburg was reelected to another term. Two new members were elected to the board; David Campbell and Ed Anderson.

State Fair

She worked on the family farm as well as at Ford’s I.G.A., as a cook for Delta Tau Delta, drove a school bus for U.S.D. #348 for 27 years, and also worked in the Baker University Maintenance Office. Louise and her husband, Joe, had just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary March 17, 2016. She is survived by her four children; Martha (Mike) Christie, Jimmie (Carol) Taul, Johnnie (Marilyn) Taul, eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Shipmans Inducted Into Kansas Limousin Breeders Association Hall of Fame Phil and Joyce Shipman of Girard, Kansas, were inducted into the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association (KLBA) Hall of Fame Saturday, May 21, 2016. They were honored during the KLBA Field Day at the Anderson County Fairgrounds in Garnett, Kansas. In 1975, Joyce’s father purchased a Limousin bull to use on his Angus and Hereford cows. Phil noticed the increase in muscle in the herd, which made him a believer in the Limousin breed. Phil and Joyce joined the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) in 1976. In 1977, they purchased their own herd of Limousin cows. Shipman Cattle Company, located in southeastern Kansas, has had a big influence in the genetics of the cattle, not only in Kansas, but also in surrounding states. They have provided quality breeding stock

for many years to seedstock and commercial cattlemen. Both Phil and Joyce have been active members of the state association. Phil served on the KLBA board of directors several times throughout the years. Joyce was the junior advisor for the Kansas Junior Limousin Association for many years. During that time, they also helped their children; Jered, Branon and Lacey, with their show projects. Now, a generation later, they are helping their grandchildren show Limousin cattle. The Shipmans are truly dedicated to the Limousin breed. They know that raising and showing cattle is about more than just fitting cattle or being the best with a set of clippers. It is about the people and the friends that are made and the unforgettable moments we all share.

Quilt Project for Schilling Family Kelly Schrag of Mound Ridge, Kansas, would like to pay it forward. Bruce and Kelly Schrag spent several months in Wichita seven years ago when Ashley, their premature baby was born. They were very grateful to the Schilling family of Edson, Kansas, who donated the proceeds from a heifer they sold at the Kansas State Sale in Salina. This money helped defray the expenses incurred during their threemonth stay. A fundraiser has been planned for Cash and Amanda Schilling to help cover the cost of their extended stay of 97 days in Wichita following the birth of their premature son, Cashyn, last January. He weighed 1 lb. 12 oz., 3 oz. less than Ashley Schrag. Quilt blocks will be sold for $100 to anyone interested in being part of

this project. The blocks will be 12 in. in size and Kelly will provide them. You can embroider or screen print a ranch logo or photo on the block. This offer is for all people in the Limousin family, not just for members of the Kansas association. Kelly is looking for someone who would be interested in putting the quilt together after all the blocks are turned in. The quilt would be auctioned off at a benefit auction and the proceeds would be given to Cash and Amanda. If you have ideas or suggestions about this project, contact Kelly Schrag at: blazink@mtelco.net or 620/242-9114.

Minnesota News… 17th Annual MN Beef Expo

The 17th annual Minnesota Beef Expo will be held at the state fairgrounds in St. Paul October 20-23, 2016. This Expo has grown over the years, expanding in numbers, exhibits, events, and shows. The highlight of the Expo is the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Program (MYBE). There are a wide variety of satellite events for juniors including Knowledge Bowl, the Sullivan Supply Stock Show University Seminar, Judging Contest, Sullivan Supply Fitting Contest, and Showmanship, a “no fit” show; however, juniors can fit their cattle for practice, but it will not have an effect on their placing. Juniors will have an opportunity to discuss cattle breeding, identification, feeding, and health of the cattle. For further information about the MN Beef Expo, check out their website at www.mnbeefexpo.com. You can get access to the handbook, registration forms, and up-to-date news about the Expo.

MYBE

Steve, Cathy, Coby and Sarah Backman, CWS Cattle Company, of Morris, Minnesota, have generously donated a heifer to the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience (MYBE) this year. Agriculture is rooted deep into the genetics of each person in the Backman family. They run CWS Cattle Company, a registered purebred Limousin herd. As a father and son partnership, Steve and Coby bought their first 36 head together in 2006. Over the past 10 years, the CWS herd has grown to

more than 100 head with plans for continued growth. Their program focuses on producing high-growth, high-muscled, docile breeding stock for ranchers who want to take advantage of the efficiency and growth the Limousin breed provides. CWS Cattle market their bulls through the Wulf Cattle at the annual Opportunity Sale and privately. The Brackmans work to promote and support agriculture through youth programs such as 4-H and FFA and also through their local West Central Cattleman’s Association as board members and volunteers. The lifestyle, the creation of such a close family bond, the tireless work ethic, and the blessed reward are just a few of the very important reasons why they would encourage anyone to become involved in any way with agriculture.

Thanks

The Minnesota Limousin Association thanks the following breeders for their support of the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience with their donation of heifers over the years. The program began in 2004 and the first donation came from Roger Potter in Redwood Falls. The MLA has donated every year since. Donating twice to the program are Lyon River Front Farm and Wulf Cattle. The other breeders who have donated are Green Acres Limousin, Cripple Creek Cattle Co., Eagle Pass Ranch, Lura Limousin, Bachmeier Livestock and Moser Farms. We appreciate the support of these breeders!

Missouri News… Estell and Minnie Williams Inducted into MLBA Hall of Fame

E

stell and Minnie Williams, William Limousin Acres of Bunceton, Missouri, were inducted into the Missouri Limousin Breeders

Association Hall of Fame Saturday, April 17, 2016. The ceremony took place during the MLBA annual meeting in Lebanon.

Estell and Minnie Williams of Bunceton, MO, were inducted into the MLBA Hall of Fame. Paul Junkans, left, and T.J. Callahan, center, presented the Williams with their award at the MLBA annual meeting.

They purchased an agricultural land tract east of Bunceton, Missouri, in 1981. They bought their first Limousin bull March 15, 1981, at the state MLBA sale held in Columbia and they quickly began building their Limousin cattle herd. Their farm consists of a cow-calf operation and corn, soybeans, wheat and hay forage are all integrated into their farm operation. Estell and Minnie have been active members of the MLBA for many years. They continue to purchase registered Limousin bulls and females to stimulate their Limousin genetics. Estell says the characteristics they like in the Limousin breed are the muscle, calving-ease, and longevity of the females. They operate an 85 head cowherd consisting of red and black purebred Limousin and a few Lim-Flex and Gelbvieh females. In addition, they have a solid heifer replacement program, and annually develop 1520 Limousin bulls for commercial cattlemen. They feed out a few yearlings for 120 days on corn and

supplement with no hormones for their customers as freezer beef. One lady recently said, “We don’t know what you’re doing but keep it up. We have never had beef like that.” Estell responded by saying, “It’s Limousin.” Estell serves as a Deacon in the Oakland Baptist Church, sings in the choir, was on the Bunceton Mutual Insurance Board of Directors for 30 years, and they are members of the Cooper County Cattlemen’s, the Missouri Cattlemen’s and the National Cattlemen’s Association. To supplement the farming operation, Estell also was a school bus driver for 20 years. Estell and Minnie have been married for 55 years and continue to live on the farm. They have two sons, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. They truly exemplify the heart and soul of the MLBA, the promotion of Limousin cattle, and the livestock industry in general. Congratulations Estell and Minnie Williams.

Three generations of the Glendenning family, Josh, John and Jack, have served on the Missouri Limousin Breeders Association Board of Directors.

“Back in Time” Do You Know the Answer? This gentlemen was a pioneer in the Limousin breed. This will take you way back to the very early days of the association. Do you know the answers to these questions?

A large crowd enjoyed the banquet at the Missouri Limousin banquet in Lebanon.

1.) Do you know his name? 2.) He majored in meat science and animal husbandry at what university? 3.) He developed a new advertising ad for the Limousin breed in 1978. Can you name the slogan? 4.) In 1985, he and his wife were presented with a special honor. Can you name it? Answers on page 29.

NALF Executive Director Mark Anderson gave an update of the past year’s activities for NALF at the MLBA annual meeting.

MLBA treasurer Nathan Hunt of Frohna, MO, gave the treasurer’s report on the MLBA finances at the annual meeting in Lebanon.

Rick Gaston named Commercial Producer of the Year

R

ick and Pam Gaston of 7 Cross Ranch near Caledonia, Missouri, were named the 2016 Missouri Limousin Breeders Association (MLBA) Commercial Producer of the Year. They were nominated by Mark Haden, Buck Ridge Limousin of Rogersville, for this award. The award was presented during the MLBA annual meeting and banquet held at the Laclede County Fairgrounds in Lebanon April 16, 2016. The Gastons have raised cattle for 35 years. They began by using a program of breeding a three-way cross using a Simmental x Angus female and a higher percentage Lim-Flex bull to achieve optimum performance. Rick’s program includes a 300-head female herd. He said that by using Lim-Flex bulls, he has seen a large increase in the weights of his calf crop.

Rick began his program using a Lim-Flex bull out of LH Rodemaster. He backgrounds the steers and sells select replacement females. He also retains 100 females on an annual basis to use in their program. He does not creep feed. Rick believes that the calf crop needs to stand on its own in order to achieve a more accurate performance data. He selects his females for birth weight, weaning, and yearling data as well as total maternal quality. Rick has put emphasis on a total EPD profile that includes ribeye and marbling. Meticulous records are maintained. His assistant, Adrienne Henry, is in charge of data collection and maintenance. Congratulations to 7 Cross Ranch upon their recognition as the 2016 Commercial Producer of the Year for Missouri.

Congratulations to Rick and Pam Gaston and assistant Adrienne Henry of Caledonia, MO, upon being named MLBA 2016 Commercial Producer of the Year. They were nominated by Rick Haden. Congratulating the Gastons was Mark Anderson, Executive Director of NALF.

Judge Betty Anglani selected Mikah Edwards as the Junior champion herdsman and Klay Beisley as the Senior champion herdsman at the Missouri weekend in Springfield.

Congratulations to the Glendenning family, J Bar J Limousin, upon their selection as the 2016 Limousin Promoter of the Year. This award is given in honor of Tom and Rosalie Smith of Arator Valley Limousin. Accepting the award from Brooke Edwards are Jason and Jack Glendenning.

Nebraska Eases Rules for Farm Vehicles Nebraska farmers and ranchers will have more freedom to move equipment using a new state vehicle designation. Governor Pete Ricketts and the Nebraska Cattlemen announced May 20, 2016, that the new designation will allow producers

to do so without having to obtain a commercial driver’s license. Vehicles that may qualify include trucks, hay grinders, and manure spreaders. Ricketts says the covered farm vehicle designation cuts red tape for agriculture, the state’s largest industry.

Eric Boon, B Bar Cattle of Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada, exhibited HUNT Credentials 37C ET at the Prince Albert Exhibition Beef Show August 5, 2016, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

NWSS HOTEL UPDATE

T

he Heartland Limousin Association regrets to inform you we were not able to get a block of rooms at the DoubleTree North for the National Stock Show this year. Due to renovations being made at the hotel, they were not able to give us rooms for the dates we needed. They only had rooms through Tuesday, January 10, 2017. The Limousin Pen and Carload show is Thursday, January 12. That meant guests staying for that show would have to change hotels. The room rates also increased by 20 percent and the buffet breakfast was NOT included with all of rooms. As a result of these concerns, Heartland will look for another hotel that can accommodate our group. The November Heart Beat will have the information if an agreement can be reached with another hotel.

The theme for the new advertising developed in 1978 was “The Word is Limousin.” The next major advertising campaign Dale developed was “Discover the Extra in Limousin Cattle.” The word “extra” appeared quite large on all of the ads and was the teaser to get people to read the ad. 4.) The Runnions were presented an Honorary Membership by the North American Limousin Junior Association in 1985. They were recognized for their dedication and support of the Limousin breed.

Protein supplementation of low-quality, low-protein forages results in a “positive associative effect.” This effect occurs as supplemental protein available to the “bugs” in the rumen allows them to digest the forage more completely and more rapidly. Therefore, the cow gets more out of the forage she consumes, she digests it more quickly and is ready to eat more forage in a shorter period of time. Data from Oklahoma State University illustrates this. Prairie hay used in one study was less than 5 percent crude protein. When the ration was supplemented with 1.75 lbs. of cottonseed meal per day, retention times of the forage was reduced 32 percent, which resulted in an increase in feed intake of 27 percent. Because hay intake was increased, the animal has a better chance of meeting the protein and energy requirement without supplementing other feeds. Because retention time was decreased, one could postulate the protein supplementation in this situation also increased Digestibility of the forage. If the forage is low in protein (less than 8 percent crude protein), a small amount of supplemental protein such as cottonseed meal, soybean meal, or one of the higher protein by-product feeds, could increase the amount of Digestibility of the forage fed. This strategy requires ample forage is available to take advantage of the “positive associative effect.”

Oats for Fall Pasture or Hay By Bruce Anderson, NE Extension Forage Specialist

F

all is just around the corner. Could you use some extra pasture or hay in late September and October? Oats might be your answer. Oats may be one of our most under-used fall forages. That’s right. Plain old dull oats. It grows fast, thrives under cool fall conditions, has good feed value, and can produce over two tons of hay or pasture yet this year. Plus, it dies out over winter, so it protects soil without causing planting problems next spring. To plant oats, drill about three bushels of oats per acre in early August for maximum yield potential. A fully prepared seedbed usually is best, but you can plant oats directly into wheat stubble or other crop residues if weeds are killed ahead of planting. Even flying oats onto corn fields severely damaged by weather or to be chopped early for silage can work, although rye tends to work better for flying on seed. Avoid fields with herbicide carryover, and topdress 40

pounds of nitrogen per acre unless the previous crop was heavily fertilized. With good moisture, oats will be ready to graze about six to eight weeks after emergence. Calves and yearlings can gain over two pounds per day. But be careful to avoid grass tetany on lush oat pasture; ask your veterinarian if you should supplement with magnesium. Also, don’t suddenly turn livestock out on oat pasture if they have been grazing short or dry pastures. Sudden respiratory problems can occur. For hay, cut oats soon after plants begin to dry out following a killing freeze, or cut earlier if plants reach a desirable growth stage. Oats can accumulate nitrates, so test hay before feeding. If you have good soil moisture, give fall oats a try. Some of your best forage growth may still be ahead of you.
