‘Thrilling’ Wines in Gibbston Valley

BY MONIQUE SIMPSON

Queenstown, New Zealand, often referenced to the adventure capital of the world, spoils visitors with its impressive list of thrill seeking activities located right on its doorstep. But the region is also the perfect base to explore the Central Otago wine region. Driving away from Lake Wakatipu, heading inland into a corridor of mountainous terrain, unveils the world’s southernmost wine growing region producing world class Pinot Noir and vibrant, aromatic whites. When it comes to wine in this spectacular part of the world, the tantalizing line up of wineries throughout the Central Otago’s main sub regions, including Gibbston, Bannockburn, Bendigo and Cromwell, are a tempting way to allocate ones’ vacation time. Gibbston Valley, the trade marked name for the winery located in the sub region of Gibbston Valley in Central Otago, is a rather unique property offering, if you’re game, a host of unique experiences. From dining and wine tours, to hosting summer concerts, or hiring a bike to cruise through the vineyards along the Gibbston River Trail, it certainly doesn’t let down Queenstown’s action packed theme. Typically, a day in wine country entails, to which I plead guilty, a tasting, perhaps a tour and if time permits platter to finish, and then it’s onto the next. What is special about Gibbston Valley is its unobtrusiveness with regards to time. Whether you stay 5 minutes for a brief tasting, or 5 hours the winery offers guests a memorable experience whilst importantly delivering wines of impressive distinction, craftsmanship and uncompromising quality. First things first- venture through the cellar door. Stepping through the front entrance I take some time to digest the history of this property detailed on the story boards overhead setting the scene. Gibbston Valley was established in 1981 by Allen Brady and was one of the founding Central Otago vineyards. Today, the wines remain exclusively made from hand tendered fruit sourced 14

from their own 55 hectares of vineyards throughout Bendigo and Gibbston Valley forged on a winemaking philosophy speaking to where they are from. With 30 consecutive vintages under their belt, there is no doubt the winery has cemented its reputation for producing intriguing, complex, elegant, wines of critical acclaim. Examining the wine range on display in front is remarkably extensive for what remains a small, boutique winery. Curiously what stands out is the staggering number of single vineyard wines – three Rieslings, one each of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay and four Pinot Noirs - each hoping to showcase their terroir and the characteristics of the vintage year. No better depicted than in its spiritual home of Burgundy, Pinot Noir is renowned for showing its unique expressions depending where it is grown and which is quite selfevident when tasting through the myriad of tasting glasses in front of me. Oscillating back and forth between the single vineyard Pinot Noirs, the difference in wine styles is quite striking most evidently displayed nosing the China Terrace with its rich red fruit in stark contrast to Le Maitre with its dark fruit, earthiness and spice.

PREFERREDMAGAZINE.CA

15

The difference? Plain and simple, it’s all down to the source of the fruit with undoubtedly altitude of vineyard sites and variances in soil structure playing pivotal roles as the care and attention in the vineyard and the treatments in the winery remains equal across the wines. Sitting at the bar chatting with the well-versed Cellar Door team, as the wines continue to open up, I am struck with each wines’ strong personality – each with its own identity and integrity of the special place it represents giving wine drinkers a truly memorable and somewhat atypical Central Otago Pinot Noir wine experience.

After an indulgent wine tasting, I have the chance to wander through the property. After taking a tour through the quaint winery and wine cave housing Gibbston Valley’s library stock while enjoying one, perhaps two, Pinot Noir chocolate truffles, we finish at Gibbston Valley Cheese for a tasting of their locally made, artisan cheeses. With a classic bright blue sky Central Otago day and warming sun blazing overhead, I can’t resist extending my stay stretching out on a beanbag across the lawn out front to enjoy a bottle of the Gibbston Valley Schoolhouse Pinot Noir and cheese board. Gravitating towards the Parmesan like Pecorino as I sip my wine I take a moment to enjoy the surrounding peace and serenity. As time ticks on, I must bid farewell. Often one of challenges with boutique wineries is tasting opportunities often may be once in a lifetime given finite supply and geographical barriers. This is especially true for Gibbston Valley. Producing only 200,000 bottles per year and with nearly 2.5 million visitors leaving a footprint on their property equating to less than one bottle per person, I am thrilled I brought on my travels The Wine Check Elite - wine luggage bag allowing me to safely transport a few favorite bottles back home. But my grimacing presumption soon turns to a grandeur smile learning that although Gibbston Valley do not export, they do offer their wines around the world exclusively through their Wine Club – a quarterly shipment club. Already shipping to the USA, they also hope to launch in Canada in the future. Stay tuned.

Recommended Wines Gibbston Valley Le Maitre Pinot Noir 2015 “Le Maitre” translating to “The Master” pays homage to its founder Allan Brady. Sourced entirely from the historic ‘Home Block’ lying adjacent to the winery, this small 2.5-hectare parcel now certified organic was originally planted in 1983 and produced Central Otago’s first commercial vintage in 1987. Medium ruby red in color, the wine reveals a delicacy on the nose of cherries and raspberries and floral undertones while on the palate showing deep structured tannins, lean acid and complex interplay of rich, red berry fruit, and pronounced spiced, smoky, earthy undertones and adoring length and savory finish.

Gibbston Valley Reserve Pinot Noir Gibbston Valley’s most famous wine after Gibbston Valley’s 2000 Reserve Pinot Noir took out Champion Pinot Noir at the London International Wine Challenge in 2001 after 140 years of Burgundy dominance. Contrary to the Single Vineyard wines, it’s not made from any one vineyard but rather a few ‘chosen’ rows of organic Pinot Noir selected based on quality and made only in the very best vintages. Deep intense ruby red in color, this wine has an intense flavor profile of red and dark fruit, smoke, French baking spices, taught acidity and chewy, textured tannins and lingering, long length. Bold, powerful wine with the ‘stuffing’ to go the distance for 10–15 years.

Stars & Cigars BY ORION ARMSTRONG

As much as I enjoy cigars and sharing my experience with our readers, it is not always easy to pin point what I am going to be writing about or what experience I will be sharing. Typically, I centre my articles around an event I have attended, a celebration or a special place I have visited. Being an avid collector who loves enjoying the cigars I procure, I always seem to have experiences to share that help shape my articles and reviews.

Over the last few months I have been involved with several cigar- centric events and have enjoyed more than my share of great cigars in the process. During these events, people often ask me a lot of questions about cigars and I enjoy sharing what I have come to know. Sharing about the knowledge I have acquired is usually done over a cigar or two. There is something truly special that happens when you smoke a cigar with someone. It doesn’t matter if it’s connected to business or occurring in a social environment, in the right setting a cigar helps bring down the walls of separation. In our fast-paced world, a cigar helps take the edge off at the end of a stressful day and stimulates quality bonding with others. A part of me feels this is the continuation of one of those traditions that we’ve had for centuries, going back to the days that it was customary for people to gather in smoking rooms. Maybe some of the essence of this is what first caused me to gravitate towards vintage cigars, but in the end, I am sure there was many contributing factors. The truth is, I love cigars and embrace the experience that accompanies smoking them. It is not just about standing on the street smoking a cigar, but the experience as a whole is more of a social elixir and a fertilizer for quality relationships with like-minded people. I seem to pursue this more than most and have been awarded many amazing opportunities along the way because of it. It is safe to say this is a real passion for me. Over the last few months I have attended cigar auctions, purchased collections overseas and made selections from 2016 for my aging program.

During the Toronto Film Festival, I was awarded the honour of selecting the top five recommended cigars for TIFF and Hollywood entertaining. The picture in this issue was taken at an exclusive Grand Touring Automobiles event at which we also showcased the cigars from TIFF, including the Daniel Marshall Golden Torpedo. Each of his cigars are wrapped with over fifty 24k Italian gold leaves and has its own individual coffin that was signed by Daniel Marshall in 2011. There was a limited production of only 300 of these cigars made. So where do I really begin to make my selection with so many cigars to choose from? When all else fails, I reflect back to the cigars that stand out from the rest. There were many I could have chosen, but this particular cigar was an amazing smoking experience and far better than I expected. It is a cigar I have smoked before, but this time the cigar came even more alive.

The vintage cigar I will be reviewing this issue is a Cohiba Siglo iii from 2012, so it was aged five years at the time I smoked it. Six Inches of smoking pleasure with a 42-ring gauge. Each cigar was individually boxed and packaged in boxes of five cigars. The case was from a 5-25 box, meaning it had five boxes of five cigars in the case and stamped 2012. This cigar was first introduced in November 1992 and later released commercially in 1994. The cigar commemorated the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Columbus. It was on the voyage that cigars were first discovered and brought back to Europe. The Siglo line is normally considered quite polite as far as cigars go, in terms of strength and flavor. This cigar from the onset was a very rich creamy smoke and offered subtle hints of nutmeg and spice. Being someone who tends to enjoy more medium to full body cigars, this vintage took shape in ways I did not expect. With properly aged Cuban cigars, the natural oils from the blend of tobacco leaves have an opportunity to fuse together. This is where the magic can happen. Aged right, some cigars can really transform as you smoke them. This is not something you can expect to experience the same way with young cigars.

Tony Clifton and Orion Armstrong at TIFF. Comedian Legend Clifton chats up media with Orion as he buys a golden torpedo for his friend in Vegas (another legend in his own rights). His trek to Toronto this week is supporting his appearance in the highly anticipated TIFF documentary.Jim & Andy & Tony Clifton: The Great Beyond. The film, directed by Chris Smith, produced by Spike Jonze and featuring Jim Carrey as Andy Kaufman, makes its debut at Toronto on September 11.

As I worked through the cigar, it opened up ever so smoothly and by the end of the cigar I could hardly put it down – what a punch. I also discovered throughout, that the smoke it produced was oily, full and was complimented with a perfect draw. I savored every pull with increasing appreciation as the cigar smoking progressed. The construction of this particular stick was exceptional, not too loose and not too tight. It had an amazing oily wrapper with no visible imperfections. By the midway point I was already in love with this cigar and knew it was a winner. The progression of flavour was extremely smooth, yet also increasingly satisfying and complex, making its presence more known. What started at what I would classify as a medium bodied smooth smoke, matured into a medium to full body cigar. It completely opened up and I can still mentally savor the experience this cigar delivered. It’s superb construction and beautiful presentation are well worth the price of admission. Without any difficulty or hesitation, my preferred vintage rating for this cigar is a 96. This further demonstrates that you can never judge a book by its cover. I would never have thought I would be awarded such a rich experience from this cigar. As for my next stop, the Partagas Festival in Havana. Let the journey continue and until we connect again. Embrace your vintage cigar experience and everything that comes along with it.

The definitions of Art and Science, respectively, include the conscious use of skill and creative imagination, an occupation requiring knowledge or skill, the state of knowing. Art is the main theme this article. The rare opportunity to interview the graffiti artist JohnOne who is the latest to create the label for the annual Hennessey Very Special release. He uses vibrant colours as a signature of his dimension—very abstract. Less abstract but innovative, Forty Creek has proven to be well received with it‘s annual special releases and this year was the first without founder John Hall. Fans were still well-served. Forty Creek’s Master Blender, Bill Ashburn, who worked alongside John, is still creating the new whiskies—the Heritage is this year’s edition (sold out in Ontario). the flavours. Now it’s a dram I can dream of tasting again, not for the first time. If you look back to last year you can see my article on the Glenmorangie Distillery and its core whiskies including my favorite, The Signet (LCBO $339.95) back with limited availability. A couple of updated have recently been released for those looking to learn more about whisky. Davin de Kergommeaux has released the Second Edition and updated version of his best selling “Canadian Whisky: The New Portable Expert”. It covers everything about Canadian whisky from it’s early history, distilling, ingredients, processes and includes the major distilleries and newcomers.

Aged in barrels crafted from locally-sourced Canadian oak trees first rooted at the time of Confederation, Forty Creek Confederation Oak (LCBO $69.95) pays homage to the series of events that helped shape the foundation of Canada. In this Canada’s 150th Sheila Schaetzle was the artist who was chosen to create the special packaging ... “To honour our heritage, I wanted to emphasize the strengths of the Canadian White Oak,” says Sheila Schaetzle. “The black and white theme—the cool haze of the tree tops, puts the focus on the soldiers. It demonstrates a strong foundation kept simple, and something that is uniquely Canadian.”

An update to the legendary Michael Jackson’s “Whisky – The Definitive World Guide”, has been released. A great source for those looking to learn more about and distilleries from around the world and the whiskies they produce – great reference for when you’re travelling. It is also for those who appreciate a great reference book in their library or coffee table wish exquisite glossy pages and vibrant colour pages, much like the ones you’re holding in you hand. My time in this issue has been limited, and so much to tell you about, so you can see more about this book at its webpage https://www.dk.com/ca/9781465464163-whiskey or if you want more information on anything feel free to write to Gerald@g2whisky.com or to subscribe to my forthcoming newsletter. If you’re looking for gift, you can’t go wrong with either of these books or the whiskies and Hennessey mentioned above.

JohnOne has been called the master of the blazing blends. Blending influenced him, but it was the blending of colours. He mixes his own colours, his artwork with so much energy is distinctive, when seen you know that it‘s by JohnOne. Another master blender who has been creative, and well-received is Dr. Don Livermore from Hiram Walker & Sons Ltd. Earlier this year I wrote about the Northern Border Collection, which has finally come out. The range of four whiskies represents the first in a new line of annual releases, which include the Lot 40, 12 year old Cask Strength (LCBO $69.95); Gooderham & Worts Little Trinity 17yo Three Grain Blend (LCBO $79.95); Pike Creek 21yo, Single Malt Cask Finish (LCBO $89.95); and the JP Wiser’s 35yo (LCBO $164.95). A hint, keep an eye out for these bottles if you’re travelling outside of Ontario, in Canadayou’ll probably have a better chance of finding some. It’s been a while since a dream dram was mentioned. The most prestigious Highland single malt ever created by Glenmorangie … Glenmorangie Pride 1974 is the Distillery’s most rare and treasured malts, with just 503 crystal decanters available.” A creative partnership was shared with Steinway & Sons where Steinway Artist Aaron Diehl composed a piece of music which embodies the whisky’s rare beauty. Fortunately, this is not a dream dram! I got to taste this great whisky, of which only one bottle was available through the LCBO for about $17,000 and long since purchased. I can still smell the deep fruitiness, citrus, chocolate, cedar and nuttiness; tasting rich of apples, oranges a nuttiness with light spice on the edges, aniseed, chocolate, toffee and Turkish delight were some of PREFERREDMAGAZINE.CA

FAEMA CANADA

60 Years Of Bringing The Best Of Italian Caffeine and Cuisine To Canadians BY JESSICA ASHLEY MERKLEY

FAEMA Canada celebrates 60 years as one of the most respected and enduring cappuccino machine brands, and then some, providing customers with unmatched quality in goods and services. The story of this notable distributor, which provides an array of top-of-the-line cappuccino and espresso machines for both residential and commercial use, is as equally intriguing and impressive as the successful empire which has resulted. A family-run operation which has its roots in Italy, FAEMA was begun in 1958 by Mike Di Donato after arriving in Canada to discover that the nation was lacking in fine espresso. This discovery came when Di Donato tasted one fateful cup of bad coffee, and history was made. The successful business has since been carried on with assistance form Mike Di Donato’s four sons, Pat, Rocco, Joe and Lorenzo, who admit that it’s their tight knit family team that assists in achieving greatness.

The family attributes much of their success to their abilities to work alongside one another as a cohesive unit, each independently carrying out tasks that suit their individual strengths for the common good of the company. The longevity and ongoing expansion of goods and services offered by FAEMA is a testament to this very fact. As Lorenzo Di Donato notes, FAEMA Canada’s Vice President of Marketing and New Business Development, Mike Di Donato was a pioneer in kick-starting “Toronto’s caffeine scene when he realized that this country lacked what Europeans had been enjoying for years.” In addition to introducing Canadians to the best quality in cappuccino and espresso as well as the machines with which the perfect cup is produced, FAEMA Canada easily expanded its successful operation to introduce the nation to Italian fine foods and culture by including distribution of pizza ovens, gelato machines and pasta machines, additionally offering services to repair any products sold. FAEMA Canada operates, as mentioned, in two separate divisions, those being for commercial and retail purposes. The FAEMA experience extends to three upscale cafes including those which exist at Sherway Gardens, Tuscany Place in Vaughan and at FAEMA’s headquarters, which is located at 672 Dupont Street. This location was acquired by the Di Donato family in 1994, yet its history began in 1914, when it was originally owned by Ford Motor Company of Canada, where the famous Model T. was assembled. Upon taking over ownership of the historically- impressive structure at Dupont Street, Mike Di Donato toiled to reinvigorate the location by renovating the exterior back to its original state and capturing the charm of years-gone-by. 26

PREFERREDMAGAZINE.CA

The headquarters now boast an expansive showroom on ground level, where top-of-the-line brands can be sought and purchased. The original of the three cafés, which is getting an overhaul in appearance by 2018, also welcomes visitors at this location, within which fine espressos and cappuccinos can be enjoyed along with some choice Italian eats. Vice President, Chief Buyer and operational manager, Joe Di Donato, relayed what exciting new endeavors FAEMA has on the horizon, that will be launched within the headquarters at Christie and Dupont over the next year. “Soon we’re going to have culinary cooking classes there and we’ll work with some of our partners, such as restaurants and celebrity chefs we sell to, to come in and do their own signature dish and have the general public participate, or even do courses for pizzaiolo training, gelato training or barista training, where you get certificates. So, these are all things that are in the plans to get going for 2018 and we are going to call that FAEMA Culinary Academy.” A taste of Italy in Canada, the Di Donato family has created a name and a business that has stood the test of time and FAEMA Canada will undoubtedly continue to introduce the masses to the sweet pleasures of Italian caffeine and cuisine for many more years to come. Glenfiddich adds to its Experimental Series with Winter Storm, Glenfiddich whisky finished in Canadian Icewine casks BY JESSICA ASHLEY MERKLEY

Glenfiddich, the world’s most awarded single malt Scotch, launches Glenfiddich Winter Storm, a limited edition whisky finished in Canadian Icewine casks. The result is a short, crisp premium whisky imbued with a unique layer of sweetness and complexity. Glenfiddich Winter Storm is the newest expression in the Glenfiddich Experimental Series line up, joining Glenfiddich #01 PA Experiment and Glenfiddich #02 Project XX which both launched in 2016.

Glenfiddich’s Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, is constantly on the lookout with eyes and ears open for ingenious innovations in Scotch whisky. This latest expression comes as a result of Canadian Brand Ambassador, Beth Havers proposing the idea of using Canadian Ice Wine Casks to Brian Kinsman. Intrigued by the idea as a prospect for the #03 installation of the Experimental Series, Brain travelled from Scotland to Canada in January 2016, during which he visited Peller Estate - a renowned winery in Niagara, Ontario. Enduring freezing weather, Brian toured the beautiful vineyards, where he learned how the grapes had to be picked by moonlight at -10˚C when they were as hard as pebbles. 28

Inspired by his experience, Brian returned to The Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, where he started experimenting with several French oak Icewine casks from the Canadian winery - filling them with various Glenfiddich aged malts for up to six months. Brian commented, “Only the rarer whiskies, those aged for 21 years, could cope with the extra Icewine intensity. Having more tannins, extracted from years in oak, these malts brought out a uniquely fresh lychee note instead of being swamped by sweetness.” What resulted was a perfect Glenfiddich 21 year old. The taste is a perfect combination of both pioneering liquids, the heightened candied sweets and oakiness of Glenfiddich are complemented by mouth-watering tropical fruit notes and underlying wine notes. Peller Estates VP of Winemaking, Craig McDonald added: “It was a privilege to work with Brian on this experiment. We go to extreme lengths to produce our intensely sweet Icewine and are always looking for ways to push the boundaries of taste, so I was intrigued to see how it could be used to create a new unexpected whisky. The resulting liquid is a unique combination of the warming soul of whisky and the frozen cold of Icewine”.

Designed to inspire unusual and unexpected variants, Glenfiddich Experimental Series combines the brand’s passion for pushing Scotch whisky boundaries and collaborating with trailblazers beyond the world of whisky. Created from partnerships and collaborations with like-minded mavericks from a wide range of different industries, Glenfiddich Experimental Series unlocks new whisky possibilities in the true spirit of experimentation. Each member of The Tenors is equipped with a unique vocal range that allows the trio to achieve harmonies that certainly cause them to stand out in the world of music. Clifton Murray was happy to share ways that he and his musical counterparts prepare their vocal instruments for lengthy tours, such as the one that lays ahead. “Prior planning is really important when taking care of our voices and our bodies. We’ve been very blessed that we are perpetually on the road throughout the year. The best way to keep our voices firing on all cylinders is to constantly be performing.” Murray adds that in addition to the 16-city holiday tour that will get underway on November 18, in Los Angeles, California, he, Fraser and Victor really haven’t stopped performing, as of late. The trio headed off to Malta this past June to give an outstanding performance at #EU2017MT. They also joined the festivities and took the stage for Canada 150 celebrations in Ottawa over the Canada Day weekend, and then followed this up by gracing the stage at Wolf Trap with the NSO in Virginia. Additionally, Murray, Micallef and Walters were honoured to perform during the Invictus Games opening ceremony in Toronto on September 23. As the talented vocalist notes, “The dream is to be a travelling, touring artist, so maintaining the voice is really the key element to longevity.” Clifton then relayed a few of the ways that he maintains physical health, and keeps his voice at the ready for each performance. “To balance out the many shows we’re doing when we’re travelling, we try not running ourselves ragged, get good sleeps and drink lots of water. We have little ointments that we use to fight off any air-born sicknesses. We also have humidifiers in the rooms. We try to eat healthy and not have heavy meals before big shows. It’s a lifestyle choice and being aware of your voice, because it’s the one instrument you can never put down.”

We've learned a number of things to get us to this point, but now we're starting to push the envelope

As to what fans can expect from The Tenors’ upcoming The Toronto-based singer and musician then reminds Christmas album, essentially that can be summed up us that the trick is to balance what is on the album with the words “awe-inspiring listening experience” and ensure that all the songs truly transfer to the stage which will undoubtedly transfer over to the group’s where the group focuses on showcasing their range and performances this fall and winter while on their North versatility to their audience. Victor enlightens us and gives a bit to go from one extreme to another.” of insight into the selection process. To the masses it may appear as though The Tenors have “That process takes a while, to be honest. There are the undergone their own extreme change-up, seeing as they obvious choices that stick out to us. Victor indicates that the choice of songs for each album “You always enter a new chapter with a little bit of nerves comes down to a “mixture of wanting to inspire people, or anxiety but, to be honest, it’s been pretty awesome. The busy father, musician and performer easily focuses on the positives that have resulted from the change within the core members of the group, stating, “It allows us the flexibility to do some things that we couldn’t do before because, with four voices, you have to be very careful to arrange the vocals in a certain way.” Transitioning from a quartet to a trio was clearly a more natural change than would be expected and as Fraser says, the fans have welcomed the evolution within the group and have responded with praise.

The Tenors’ latest Christmas album, Christmas Together, released October 2017, just in time for the holidays.

“The feel with the three of us has been really great, and the response when performing this past year has been very, very encouraging. The three of us are very open to exploring new sounds as well, when we’re talking about arrangements or moving our voices together in a certain way. We’ve learned a number of things to get us to this point, but now we’re starting to push the envelope and want to do a little more vocally. It’s been a great experience and I think this Christmas album is a testament to that.” The Tenors are also branching out by way of the listening experience offered to fans. The group has communicated that not only can you purchase the album by way of iTunes and CD, but that you can also pick up a vinyl version. In contrast to that option, there will be a Spotify list specifically dedicated to their music and The Tenors’ new album. Christmas Together was released on October 13, just ahead of the holiday season. PREFERREDMAGAZINE.CA

The array of talent that has gone into creating the album is simply astounding, and all- the- more reason to set your eardrums on it. The Tenors had the opportunity to collaborate with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra on a variety of the songs, in addition to the Canadian Children’s Opera Company, and the Orpheus Choir as Clifton excitedly divulged. The Tenors also had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with multi-Grammy award-winning producers and arrangers on Christmas Together, such as Keith Thomas, Jorge Calandrelli, Bob Ezrin and a few new producers in the industry that are “really making waves,” including Asher Lenz, Anthony Mancini, Tawgs Salter and Mark Camilleri.

STUDENTS STEP OUTSIDE “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone” —NEALE DONALD WALSCH

Neuchâtel Junior College is a Canadian independent school located in the town of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Each year, students from across Canada, the USA and beyond, step outside of their comfort zones at NJC. Offering exclusively the final year of high school, North American curriculum, and an immersive cultural experience, NJC is the only school of its kind in the world. Students study Grade 12 university-preparatory courses, instructed in English, while living in the French-speaking town of Neuchâtel. Approximately 75 students are enrolled each year, all of whom are preparing for university admission to a wide array of programs from Engineering to the Humanities. They do so while living as Europeans in one of the safest, most organized and idyllic countries on the planet. On the weekends, students explore the great destinations of Europe while learning about the past, the present and themselves. 36

The tradition of students living with local Swiss families has proven to be one of the most transformational and cherished aspects of the year spent abroad, and it dates back to NJC’s founding year in 1956. Students integrate into Swiss culture and daily life while learning French through interaction with their host families and the local community. Switzerland is one of the best places in which to learn French, given the beauty and clarity of the Swiss-French accent. French courses to support language development are either credit or non-credit depending on students’ university plans and abilities. The only prerequisite is the willingness to learn!

I left routine and replaced it with worldliness and spontaneity. This school has opened my eyes to what life is and what I should work for. Life is a wonderful gamble that you have to jump into with both feet. Celeste Ozimek-Newman ’17 University of Waterloo, Knowledge Integration

There is a new measure of independence gradually extended to our students, but all within the care of a small, watchful community of educators and host families. Students are treated as the young adults that they are becoming to prepare them for the freedoms, challenges and expectations that university life will soon present. In choosing to go to NJC, students are forced to break out of their bubbles. They leave familiar aspects of their lives behind to experience a new way of living, and, as a result, they cease being tourists. By stripping away the influences of home and all that is predicable, they reveal who they are and what they want out of life. Class of 2017 graduate, Amélie Chartrand, described her experience as “putting on multicolored sunglasses after living your entire life in black and white. Everything is suddenly brighter, more complex and it seems like the entire world is at our fingertips.” Stepping outside of their comfort zones teaches these young men and women to adapt to unfamiliar situations and acts as a catalyst for positive change. In their 2009 paper published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, “Cultural borders and mental barriers: the relationship between living abroad and creativity,” Professors Maddux and Galinsky outline a scientific correlation supporting what NJC has witnessed year after year: immersive cultural experiences produce creative and innovative individuals.

The more of the world we see, the bigger and more awe-inspiring it becomes. Around every corner is a lesson to be learned, an adventure to be had or an experience to change a life. Max Robson ’17 University of Toronto, Rotman School of Business

Neuchâtel Junior College has over 5,000 alumni worldwide. Students have consistently evolved into confident, independent leaders who have the courage to live their lives in extraordinary ways. Among NJC’s notable alumni is Chairman of Globalive Capital, Anthony Lacavera ’93, who recently authored How We Can Win: And What Happens to Us and Our Country If We Don’t. Well-known social entrepreneur, Marc Kielburger ’95 is an alumnus who is co-founder of a family of organizations dedicated to the power of WE, a movement of people coming together to change the world. WRITTEN BY COLIN KEDDY RFC

The History First and foremost I think it's important to know some of the history surrounding the family office model as it has been around for more than four centuries and actually pre dates banking. Any of the original family offices are European. Most commonly known in the Western world would be the house of ockefeller, started by ohn ockefeller who is considered a crucial figure in the history of amily ffice. Accruing well over billion of assets before his death in which would be the e uivalency today of billion is what we know as the modern day single family office. Although at the time it was never referred to as a family office things such as inter generational wealth planning, asset management, philanthropy or any re uirement that was of interest to his family, was managed by the amily ffice and still continues to this very day. he framework of this organi ation also leads to the development of Multi family office, for wealthy families who were not in need of or re uiring full time professionals. owever, high net wealth families have the ability to share those services with a small handful of other families. The unction of a amily O ce As mentioned above, the most common characteristics of a amily ffice are asset management, tax planning, philanthropy and the list goes on. ne thing that is truly great about a amily ffice is that there is no hard and fast definition. or example: with my own amily ffice clients I have been involved in helping children to determine and apply for post secondary education, the purchase and ac uisition of rental property, be it commercial or residential, as well as simple things such as negotiating the price of a new car on the client s behalf. I remember a number of years ago working with a amily ffice who had adult children that didn t work with the assumption that one day they would inherit the family fortune. Although their father was a high profile CE he lacked the skill to know when to say no to his kids when it came to money. oday those kids go through the amily ffice to ac uire their allowances as well as re uest additional funds. Although somewhat extreme, this would be an example of what is referred to as family governance, crucial in the amily ffice model. If managed properly amily ffice and its wealth can exist for multiple generations.

Richard C. Wilson is the founder of the Family Office Club, a decade old leading community of over 1,500 registered family offices. When discussing the core reasons why families put family offices in place he emphasized the holistic approach to protecting the balance sheet of a family combined with the customization of what the family invests into, align costs, alloColin

cations, and team resources with the family’s own DNA, objectives, and unique abilities in the marketplace. Richard believes it is the consistent falling short by most private banks and wealth management firms that continues to add additional fuel to the family office concept. It has really exploded over the past 7 years to be a more mainstream trend.

or families looking at the amily ffice space what do you feel are the most important things to consider when selecting a amily ffice

Richard I have found that the three most important things are the nowing where you want to go, why you want to go there, your values, ob ectives, mission, and creating your charter document dashboard to serve as a roadmap for creating your family office is the most important step. Without this you have no idea whether the money you are spending is getting you towards your goals and your team won t know what to prioriti e or what to say yes or no to. his is critical and costs so little to do there is no reason not to at least put this together. es most family offices don t have a charter document and have never bothered to invest the time to create one. Alignment of the model and structure of the solution with the goals, ob ectives, and mission of the family is the second most important component. ou may meet someone you really think is sharp, who is very professional and very helpful but if they work inside of a private bank or investment firm and you need a family office or virtual family office solution. All of the lobster dinners and great introductions won t change that his business goal or compensation structure depends on selling you his platform solution, and it may not be the right solution for you. It is important to work with a exible advisor or work with someone independent or to get proposals from different groups to see which one feels like the best fit based on your charter document and mission. he third most important component is your team, from the advisor you bring on, to the C A or attorney you use, to your first hires. he team, including your service providers that you put together, can dramatically change your results and day to day level of stress. ust as if you were building a business, hiring properly and paying for expertise and value instead of focusing only on cost is critical.

So‌ o need a amily O ce? Chances are the statement I m about to make applies to ust about everyone. owever, this is hypercritical when it comes to the a uent. Many times I have had clients come to my office in the discovery phase of looking at a multi family office. Most of the uestions are uite similar. What services will a family office provide me ow much will the services cost me o I really need a Single amily ffice or a Multi family office for my family s wealth ne of the uestions that I posed to all people coming to my office is, if your accountant, lawyer, banker, financial advisor and insurance professional, as well as any other professionals that you work with, were sitting at this table with us would they know each other o they currently work together o they agree on what s best for you If the answer is no then it may be time to consider the amily ffice model. When you can get these professional moving in the same direction on your behalf a lot can be accomplished.

Colin

I was recently in NYC attending a conference put on by the Family Office Club, and I asked Richard a few pointed questions about the space from his experience working with families ranging from $15M to $10B+ in wealth each.

ow much wealth is re uired before you need to have a family office solution of some type in place

Richard I know some families who have virtual family office solutions in place with only M M in assets while I know a billionaire with no family office solution in place at all. In fact, he didn t know what a family office was when I explained the model to him a few months ago. ypically though, anyone with M M in wealth could use some sort of lean virtual family office solution, and once you get to M M there are many benefits to having more infrastructure, processes, documentation, and higher uality service providers in place. he benefits of having a family office in place grow if you can do so before a ma ority or some of your ma ority li uidity events, you can be more tax efficient as you scale your wealth and ac uire new assets within hopefully properly structured entities that consider next generations, current and future tax codes, optimal residence choices, etc. Colin

Why is it important to brand your family office

Richard

randing your family office can help raise the status of your family office. As a credible legitimate consideration when someone is looking for the right strategic investor, a right party to sell a piece of e uity to, or when building their board. What makes this even more powerful is the fact that most single family offices ignore this tactic completely and don t have websites, don t have business cards, don t have a logo, don t have a brand that says anything but some obscure Greek god s name, or their last name typically nobody knows what deals to send them, or which deals to show them first because they have put no effort into positioning themselves as strategic capital for one target company type. his is a bit mistake your family office s brand should be sweating for you day in and day out.

With great wealth, often comes great responsibility. A family office may be the best way to ensure your financial success and protection for you and your family for generations to come. — Colin Keddy RFC is a registered financial consultant. ARPAL ONE,

A UNIQUE WATCH SIGNED LAURENT FERRIER AND URWERK FOR ONLY WATCH 2017 BY LIBBY AUSTIN

July 2017 – It’s neither a Laurent Ferrier watch nor an URWERK, yet the signatures of both firms appear on its back. The existence of this unexpected watch defies logic because it is the joint effort of two watchmaking companies that couldn’t be more different. Each bases its identity on the opposite ends of watchmaking’s stylistic spectrum. On one side, the expression of time-honoured traditions; on the other, an anarchic effort to overturn conventions. Laurent Ferrier and URWERK have created a piece of work that is unique, for only one-of-a-kind watches qualify to be sold at the Only Watch auction in aid of the battle against Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The polished case of the Only Watch by Laurent Ferrier and URWERK is what first catches the eye. It reflects light like no other and seems to sparkle. In contrast, URWERK’s movement was created with every restraint. Unlike the case, it is almost self-effacingly colourless. The four hours satellites are in a matt pearly grey with diamond-polished outlines while the hours and minutes markers are painted in white SuperLuminova. “We undertook this project with the greatest respect for each other’s work” Felix Baumgartner declares. “We held a great number of operational meetings, setting up a dialogue and developing a friendship that is apparent in the final result. We were aiming for subtlety rather than performance” he adds.

This remarkable watch also offers a unique opportunity to witness two independent brands working together to produce a watch for the Only Watch 2017 sale. Laurent Ferrier has forged an enviable reputation as master of the definitive watch in the classic style. URWERK, on the other hand, has spent the last 20 years challenging the watchmaking world with its bold originality. The result of this extraordinary association is in front of your eyes.

The time is shown by four satellites, each bearing three hours numerals, which successively sweep past the track of minutes. This original and intuitive way of telling the time is aided by a cover in polyetheretherketone, a thermoplastic known as PEEK, which hides the satellites that are not engaged in indicating the time. The satellites turn on a hidden carrousel, at the heart of the successive passage of the hours. It’s no easy job to engineer the smooth and silent revolutions of a module that weighs 500 times as much as a conventional set of hands.

Let’s deal with the case first. You can well imagine the perfect, almost aerodynamic, curves coming to life in the confident strokes of Laurent Ferrier’s pencil. “It’s a cleanly cut watch. My friends know my love of cars, a predilection expressed in this watch. This new creation is like streamlined coachwork, fluid and without any affront to the eye,” he explains. Such a design demanded a special material. “For that we turned to the Cendres+Métaux company in Biel.” The case was shaped from an exclusive alloy called ARPAL+, specifically developed for this unique watch. ARPAL+ consists of 75% precious metals and resists wear and scratches better than white gold or steel. Its colour never fades, nor does it oxidise. This alloy was first developed for the electronics industry where it is much appreciated for its strength and because it is easily worked.

Martin Frei has the final word on this remarkable venture: “Throughout the undertaking we complemented one another perfectly, sending the ball back and forth. For example, the cabochon winding crown recalls the stripes of our satellite hours. There are many subtle ways in which we refer to each other’s stylistic codes. While URWERK has opted for discretion, Laurent Ferrier has raised the tone. The result is perfect equilibrium.”

The story started behind the watchmaking scenes. It was in November 2015 at a watchmaking exhibition like many others, thousands of kilometres away from Geneva. There, two watchmakers, exiled from the cocoons of their respective workshops, made a tentative effort to escape the crowds and take a break. Slightly bewildered by friendly bustle, they sought refuge under a staircase. They hardly knew each other, though their paths had crossed, but destiny seemed to have brought them together. Thus did Laurent Ferrier and Felix Baumgartner meet. “We simply introduced ourselves,” recalls Felix Baumgartner. “Of course, I knew him by sight and something about him. But there, we seemed to be alone in the world, lost in a bubble, and so we got to know one another.” Laurent Ferrier picks up the story: “I’m rather shy by nature, but I quickly found common ground with Felix. The place was peculiar, but the time was right.” Their friendship was to blossom into a joint project — to build a bridge between two watchmaking companies and thereby to create an exceptional watch for a noble cause. Combining tradition with daring innovation was like mixing oil and water. But that is precisely what URWERK’s Martin Frei likes doing best. “When I learned about the project, I was immediately enthusiastic. Bringing together two visions, two cultures and two generations in a single creation seemed to me a splendid stylistic exercise.”

Only Watch 2017 by Laurent Ferrier and URWERK Every two years, the leading names in watchmaking get together to raise funds for research into muscular dystrophy. This year, Laurent Ferrier and URWERK have subscribed to this remarkable initiative.

Laurent Ferrier

URWERK

Laurent Ferrier offers alternatives to all devotees of classic mechanical watchmaking. The workshop develops movements crafted in harmony with the finest traditions, while enriching them with high-performing and genuinely innovative technical attributes. Designed for devotees of pure values, it updates horological fundamentals – a renewal of origins that positions Laurent Ferrier as a wellrespected member of the exclusive circle of mechanical Haute Horlogerie.

Although URWERK is a young company established in 1997, it is recognised as one of the forerunners of the new wave of watchmaking. Producing just 150 watches a year, the company sees itself as a craftsman’s studio where traditional expertise coexists with avantgarde styling. The company manufactures modern and complex watches that are unprecedented and in keeping with the most demanding criteria of fine watchmaking: independent design and research, advanced materials and handcrafted finishes.

Hailing from a family with a watchmaking tradition stretching back three generations, Laurent Ferrier, the emblematic figure of the brand bearing his name, is profoundly attached to the excellence of watchmaking professions. His 37 years to date in the field of design, technical research and watch external parts, both his inventiveness and his quest for perfection pursued through a faultless career. Born in Geneva in 1946, Laurent Ferrier took a complete watchmaker’s training course at the Geneva Watchmaking School. Upon graduation, he began his career in movement development and prototyping, thereby becoming familiar with the construction of Fine Watchmaking calibres. His passion for motor sports led him to a change of professional scene for several years. During this period, he devoted his skill to making automobile components, while in 1979, his talent as a driver earned him a third place in the overall rankings of the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race, at the wheel of a Porsche 935T. Laurent Ferrier bridges the gap between horological tradition, embodied by a wealth of details and finishes, and industrial innovations. Its movements feature an entirely novel construction and are made from cuttingedge materials, the goal being to achieve a perfect blend of classic aesthetics and ultra-reliable functionality. 46

The name URWWERK comes from the ancient city of Ur of the Chaldees in Mesopotamia, founded nearly 6,000 years ago where the Sumerian inhabitants first established units of time based on the shadows cast by its monuments. Ur in the German language also means primeval or original and Werk means an achievement or a mechanism. Thus URWERK can be translated as an original movement — a tribute to generations of watchmakers whose work has resulted in what we know today as haute horlogerie, or superlative watchmaking.

2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Revealed!

The latest SUV to hit 60 mph in under four seconds. BY ALEX JACKSON

When it comes to naming a vehicle after a roadway, you could do a lot worse than Italy’s Stelvio Pass. More than 9000 feet above sea level at its highest point and consisting of more than 48 hairpin corners on the north side alone, it’s considered one of the best driving roads in the world. So it’s only natural that Alfa Romeo would co-opt the moniker for its new sports…uh, SUV? Okay, so it’s not exactly a surprise. And the Alfa Romeo Stelvio just made its in-the-metal debut at the 2016 Los Angeles auto show. Three for the Road Assembled at Alfa’s Cassino plant in Frosinone, Italy, the Stelvio is built on the same platform as the Giulia and will be offered in three trim levels: Stelvio, Stelvio Ti, and the high-performance Stelvio Quadrifoglio, which has enough distinct features and tuning to be considered a separate model. While the Stelvio and Stelvio Ti both rely on a 280-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four for motivation, the high-performance Quadrifoglio utilizes the 505-hp 2.9-liter turbocharged V-6 from the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. Aluminum is used extensively in the construction of every Stelvio, including the front and rear subframes, the suspension components (control arms in front, multilink in the rear), the doors, and the fenders; the rear crossmember is partly made of composite plastics to pare more weight. As you might have guessed, the base Stelvio and the Ti are positioned parallel to the Giulia. Both pair the turbocharged 2.0-liter with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 16-valve single-overheadcam four-cylinder with direct injection and Fiat’s MultiAir variablevalve-lift system produces the same 280 horsepower and 306 lb-ft of torque as it does in the Giulia. The engine produces full torque at a low 2250 rpm and holds on to it until 4500 rpm. Alfa says the all-wheel-drive system can transfer up to 60 percent of torque to the front axle when needed. It’s linked to the Stelvio’s Chassis Domain 50

PREFERREDMAGAZINE.CA

Controller (CDC) and driver-adjustable Alfa DNA Drive Mode system, which permits the driver to select among Dynamic, Natural, and Advanced Efficiency modes to modify throttle response, boost pressure, and the settings of the adaptive suspension on the Ti and Quadrifoglio. On the Quadrifoglio, it’s called DNA Pro, while on the base Stelvio, adaptive suspension damping is not available. A 7.0-inch TFT screen and a pair of traditional white-on-black dial gauges deliver pertinent info to the driver. Leather seating, a Formula 1–inspired flat-bottom steering wheel, push-button start, a backup camera, rear parking sensors, and a power hatch are part of the standard kit. Alfa’s Q4 all-wheel-drive system is standard across the lineup. Harman/Kardon supplies an optional 900-watt, 14-speaker audio system. The standard set of 18-inch aluminum wheels is only one of seven choices, in sizes ranging from 18 to 21 inches in diameter. There are 13 exterior colors offered. The Ti trim adds standard 19-inch wheels, authentic wood interior trim, and an 8.8-inch infotainment screen in place of the standard 6.5-inch display. Ti buyers will also have the option of selecting Sport and Lusso packages; however, at press time, exact details on these packages were not available.

Four-Leaf Clover Although the 505-hp 2.9-liter V-6 and its 443 lb-ft of torque may not be all that separates the Stelvio Quadrifoglio from the humbler base and Ti trims, it’s certainly a formidable difference. Alfa is not pulling any punches here, claiming the Quadrifoglio can knock off the zero-to-60-mph run in 3.9 seconds and is good for a top speed of 177 mph. Helping the cause is an eight-speed automatic transmission, a torque-vectoring rear differential, high-performance suspension tune, more robust brakes, and Quadrifoglio-specific wheels. A 200mph speedometer, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, carbon-fiber trim, and a set of 12-way adjustable seats carry the racy theme inside. Those interested in taking things even further can specify lightweight carbon-fiber Sparco seats and Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes. Building on the basics of Alfa’s DNA Drive Mode system, the Quadrifoglio’s DNA Pro setup features a fourth setting, appropriately named Race. When selected, it enables an overboost function for the turbos, opens up the two-mode exhaust, turns off the stability control, delivers sharper brake and steering settings, and dials up more aggressive transmission and throttle calibrations. Basically, it sets the stage for the driver to emerge as either a hero or a zero, based entirely on skill level. Alfa Romeo, which has become notorious after a decade of announcing and then delaying models, takes a huge step toward finally getting its portfolio together with the arrival of the Stelvio. That said, the brand has not yet revealed any dimensions, pricing, or an on-sale date for the vehicle. Although we’re anxious to drive it, a part of us wishes Alfa had kept the Stelvio tag in its back pocket to use for a pulse-quickening, high-performance sports car or sports sedan rather than an SUV. Long Island For Men

BY NATALIE SERVELLO

Men’s fashion industry trio Tony Cerone, Gerry Cerone and Fadi Mourani are the power houses behind one of Toronto’s top men’s clothing stores – Long Island For Men. As men’s fashion moves towards a new and challenging direction, designers and manufacturers are offering more options these days, because men are breaking out of the accepted fashion standards. Partners Gerry Cerone and Fadi Mourani are in complete agreement. “Sometimes men feel overwhelmed, they’re not sure where to start, but men that shop here, trust us.”, states Gerry while Fadi says, “We do a lot of listening before we attempt to satisfy customer needs”.

Why Smart Men Talk About Sex D R . R O N M AY E R

62

PREFERREDMAGAZINE.CA

He’s happy. He’s healthy. His sleep quality, life expectancy, and relationships are now top notch.

His secret is simple: This man is having sex. It sounds easy enough. But what if I told you this man came to my clinic a few months ago with serious erectile dysfunction? What if I shared with you this man’s other secret: He is having sex because he decided to discuss his sexual health concerns with a doctor. Across Canada, thousands of men are taking the same step he did. What was once a taboo subject is now a well understood, treatable condition. That’s good news for the 50% of men over 50 who face erectile concerns - at least, it’s good news for those who are willing to talk about it. The rewards for those who pursue a healthy sex life can be astounding. Sex releases endorphins into the brain, which can help manage stress and promote happiness throughout the day. The male orgasm also releases prolactin, a biochemical which can help men regulate their sleep. Additionally, men who have sex two or more times per week are 45% less likely to develop cardiovascular disease.

Physical therapies are often used alongside SONICWAVE™ to help men strengthen their pelvic floor muscles or stimulate the pudendal nerve reflexes. Thanks to the recent research into men’s sexual health, top-of-the-line products are available to lead men through exercises in the clinic and at home. Patients are also recommended to undertake exercise programs that focus on their cardiovascular health. A physically healthy lifestyle can have many benefits for men, including an increased sex drive and stronger ability to get an erection. I also frequently discuss the hormone testosterone with patients. Testosterone is responsible for many things related to men’s health, including the maintenance of male fertility, libido, and muscle strength. If a man is experiencing a testosterone deficit, it could affect his ability to get and maintain an erection. Testosterone replacement may be considered for men experiencing erectile dysfunction, however it is imperative that such therapies be done under a doctor’s supervision.

Relationships can also benefit from a healthy sex life. Increased intimacy releases oxytocin (aka the “love hormone”) which can increase the bond between two people. According to a recent study, having sex once per week contributed more to a couple’s well-being than tripling their income. Kissing, hugging, and touching are also critical to feeling loved and nurtured in a relationship. Knowing the importance of intimacy has made couples less likely to quietly tolerate a sexless life. Men and women are instead seeking real solutions to this prevalent problem. That’s why successful men often discuss the issue with both their doctors and their partners. Both parties can play a role in supporting a treatment plan and getting their sex life back on track. While a healthy relationship is certainly worth fighting for, there’s an even more serious reason to pay medical attention to sexual health issues. For some men, a doctor’s visit about erectile dysfunction isn’t just convenient - it’s life-saving. When you have an erection, the circulatory system, the nervous system, and your pelvic muscles are all working together. If a man is unable to get or maintain an erection, it could signal a serious issue with the brain, the heart, hormones, or pelvic muscles. At my clinic, patients have discovered issues ranging from high blood pressure to diabetes after having their erectile dysfunction examined. While popular pills can help a man get an erection in a hurry, this “quick fix” does not address the underlying health issues. For this reason, many men are choosing to speak with specialists who can check for real causes and offer real solutions. One of the reasons that men and their doctors have neglected this topic is that, up until recently, there were few treatments available. While some men came forward after performance-enhancing pills were released in the 1990s, the topic was still avoided by those who felt the medication was not right for them. Times have changed. At FullMast Men’s Health Clinic, our individualized, multimodal plans combine new and effective treatments with exercise programs to restore a man’s sex life. One of the most popular treatments for Canadian men is SONICWAVE™ Therapy. It’s easy to see why - SONICWAVE™ is a safe, non-drug, non-surgical treatment which can solve erectile problems without adverse side effects. The treatment uses lowintensity “shock wave therapy” to restructure tissues inside the penis. Although this technology may sound new to some, it actually has a long history of being used to successfully treat damaged tissue from injuries and disease. Since being cleared by Canadian regulatory authorities to treat erectile dysfunction, it has helped numerous FullMast patients regain their erectile health.

Patients should think of a multimodal treatment plan like a business plan: A doctor will assess the situation, understand the opportunities for “growth,” and put together a combination of treatments that will resolve the underlying issues. Since there are many reasons a man could be experiencing erectile dysfunction, each assessment and plan must reflect the individual’s medical history, personal preferences, and treatment options. The results can be life-changing. The modern man knows how to take control of his life. He knows how to be successful in the office. He knows how to run a household. It’s time for him to apply these problem-solving and communication skills to take charge in the bedroom and get his sex life back. The solution starts with a single phone call. To reach FullMast Men’s Health Clinic and book your confidential consultation, call 1-844-500-1177. Dr. Ron Mayer is FullMast’s chief medical officer. After working as a physician in one of the busiest emergency rooms in Canada Ron worked as a C-suite leader in travel health insurance and chronic disease management companies.

10 Ways to Look Younger BY JAY WELLS

Skin Deep Skin is your largest organ. A protective outer layer called dermis protects your other organs, fights off disease and when you think about it, takes quite a beating in general. Your skin is one of the first things that will “show your age” so it is an organ worth taking care of. Thankfully, there are three key things that can become part of your routine that will give you healthy, younger-looking skin. 1 Plan visits to spa environments. If you have never had a facial, it’s a must. Your first visit for skin-care should leave you feeling refreshed with a home regimen will get you on your way to a renewed glow. An expert will tell you what type of skin you have and what your needs are. Your skin’s three layers will be doing a little dance and it will take about five weeks for the cells to renew and fall away. If you can keep it simple you have it made.

2 Moisturize. Odd things at different times of the year call for a light moisturizer; like air conditioning, antihistamines at peak pollen times or the cozy heat of the wood stove. Twice a day is all you need and being consistent is the key.

Never take matters into your own hands and use something from the pharmacy - the developer and the pigments involved in those kinds of products aren’t doing you any favours. No need to “get rid of ” grey. You simply want blend it back a bit. If you’re wanting to completely cover grey, there are options today that are semi-permanent designed specifically to fade gracefully, unlike permanents, which tend to lift a little at first and then create unwanted red tones. This is definitely an area where you need to go to the salon to talk to a professional. Don’t be intimidated. Somebody who has your best interest at heart will give you something that is simple and non-committal. Whether it’s an upscale salon or a men’s barbering boutique. I suggest making an appointment. Just go inside and be inspired.

3 The last and most important is sun protection. I once baked in sunbeams glistening in baby oil in the 80’s. Fast forward 30 years and you’ll only find mineral-based 60SPF with a hint of tint in my collection. I don’t mess around. Day and night. Even the harsh UV rays of the disco ball can wreak havoc at this age.

Grooming & Presentation The evolutionary purpose of hair is for protection, but we as humans have been using it as a medium for object and adornment for ages. Many of us have genetic hangovers blessing us with sprigs and fluffs in the most awkward places so taming the beast is big business these days.

I have slightly oily skin from breaking a sweat all day creating new looks with the blow dryer. I have tried many types of skin care and I have no time for more than three steps, so I keep a facial cleanser in the shower to easily make it part of my routine.

The Coiffure It’s not very often I hear a man request hair colour these days. This could be because of the recent silver trends being considered new and edgy, but looking good isn’t about trying to be trendy. My advice to nine out of 10 male guests is keep it natural. The confidence to sport it natural is sexy but if you decide to go with colour, one wrong turn and it can actually draw negative attention to the sorry state of your hair. Twice a year I may place a few staggered highlights on the ends of my natural colour to make it look sun-kissed as opposed to using classic to-the-scalp techniques. You do not want demarcation lines, but instead something that blends in and brings a natural richness to the look of your hair.

I grew up mesmerized by the hirsute manliness of such chestcarpeted hunks as Burt Reynolds, Tom Selleck and David Hasselhoff. My onset of puberty came so fast I looked over my shoulder and was shocked to see my new butt...and that was just the beginning. Little blonde fluffs on, up and over my everything. By the time I was 17, Calvin Klein was stressing me out with all those hairless, perfect bodies in every magazine spread. Fortunately, lasers came along and changed the depilatory scene for my peachy brotherhood. But remember, before you pursue any laser approach, do your research and find qualified experts. Style-wise, my opinion is never to go too far one way or another with any trends when it comes to body grooming. As far as chest and body hair, I choose to go all the way to dolphin-level smooth round the back and stop at otter in the front. It is important to make it look natural. I even got up the balls to have a few manzilians one Winter which meant clearing the sidewalk but leaving a little wreath on the doorknob to keep festive, if you know what I’m saying. In the Summer, I may get a maintenance wax here and there but personal parts can also be addressed in the shower with a razor and minty jam or jelly can add a little zip to your morning routine. Current barber trends have boutiqued the beard-trim experience as much as the facial. I trim mine myself and have never been to a barber shop. I treat it as a time for relaxation and will share some video tips in the coming year. I’ll be bringing you the skinny on neck, ears and nose. How to trim your own beard, oil it and release it superpowers! Eye to Eye Some believe brows are the frame to the eye, the windows to the soul. Eyebrows can make you or break you. If you have ever seen anyone with shaved eyebrows you know how frightening and disconcerting can look. Leave the Brows & Explore Frames I often change my look with glasses on heavy rotation as well as contact lenses. I’ve standardized my work uniform to be Levi’s jeans with a black Hanes T-shirt and work boots so I don’t have to worry about the expensive hair colour ruining my clothes on the job. Consequently, my glasses have become a way to change my look. I have about 7 different frames that I alternate with contact lenses to change my visage. It is one of the only ways I can feel fancy and express myself during work hours and I am often shocked at the change when I switch from my larger heavy frames down to my finer wire frames. Shape the Brows About once a month I find a few rogue hairs as thick and dark as pencil leads. I have never been one to pluck my own eyebrows and got myself in hot water in my youth for giving people unwanted advice on how not to look like you’re having a tadpole convention, a set of hockey sticks or like you’re just about to pull out your Best Liza Minnelli impersonation. Instead of plucking and risking a humiliating result, I visit the spa monthly for upkeep and avoid exaggerated, feminine-looking arches. My eyebrows are quite light. I have a vegetable-based tint, custom mixed in two shades to keep them from disappearing in summer months. I have a HomeKit with a miniature comb and brush a scissor and tweezers, specifically designed for things that may pop up between spa services.

Next year’s videos will highlight options like threading which is popular for thick dark brows. I’ll also share about micro-blading for longer lasting color results, tweezing, waxing and some general rules to keep yourself from looking just a little too freaky. It’s in the Details It’s surprising how many people notice hands and feet. From wedding rings to ingrown toenails, the good and the bad things can catch one’s eye. I must admit I used to be painfully oblivious to the scrutiny of my digits. For years, my hands bore the stains of hair colour from the salon and sliced finger tips from ripping down plaster and lathe from renovations I’d been up to. My feet were ravaged from long-distance running and hours of digging in the garden in work boots. It wasn’t until the grand opening of one of my salons that my aesthetician said, “You need to do something with those hands before you walk on the red carpet tonight.” I started off simple with my nails trimmed and cuticles pushed back. Then, I got carried away buffing. I could almost see my reflection in my in my shiny nails but needed a nail hardener. That’s when I discovered matte clear polish created for men. My addiction became apparent sailing on the Mayan Riviera one beautiful, glistening sunny day when my French-tipped, glittery bridal toes were stealing the show. No one noticed the flying fish swimming mid-air over our heads, instead compliments flew as my deck mates remarked how they wished their partners would follow suit. I went on to explore paraffin wraps, reflexology pedicures and even more nail polish for men before finding a happy medium. These days I keep it simple. I have a glamorous gold HomeKit I keep in my nightstand to match my decor. I find any grooming is a more pleasant experience when your accoutrements match your environment. In my creative life at work I have always kept my fingernails as short as possible and I’ve been wearing gloves at the cleansing bowl to keep from stains. The current running and yoga portions of my training program are not conducive to maintaining the same toes that once glowed in bridal glory. Keeping things short, simple and clean is all I need for my feet as well. However, I do treat myself to a pedicure or two with the change of seasons or after completing long distance training goals. Fortunately in today’s non-gender specific world, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. With these matters of affairs you don’t have to be so blackand-white and it really doesn’t matter if you’re a boy or a girl to indulge in a manicure or pedicure and bring some colour to your nails.

Mindset Matters “Work life balance” is a popular term that we hear quite often these days. Most of us have a vast array of categories to balance and it’s never as simple as it sounds in the fast-paced world we live in. However, I remind myself often the only thing constant is change, which is pretty good life advice. Change is Good If someone could’ve told me five years ago that this is where I would be now, I would’ve told them that they had the wrong crystal ball. Looking at the big picture, I actually like that I had no idea where things would end up. Imagine knowing everything that was going to happen before it happened? That would be so unbalanced. Life is something that we have no control over, but we can control how we react to and balance it. I believe what goes up must come down and you have to feel pain to understand pleasure. There have been times in my career, personal life and goals where I have been lost, or where one area has required more attention than the other. I quickly realized I had to get out of my own way and go with the flow if I wanted things to really feel balanced. Ever notice how too much of one thing can starve another? I set goals with rewards for myself and realize some things may have to wait. In the face of potential financial crisis, I made a decision to put relationships on hold and really focus on moving my business to my own building to transform it into something new. Fear could have held me back but I had a longterm goal and got there by creating short-term goals with little rewards as I accomplished them. I am fortunate that I have a job that I love. There were segments in my career where I put in twenty-four, 12-hour days with no day-off. However, if I got up every day after a good nights’ sleep and did some exercise and ate healthy food I felt I could give my guests the best version of me. I told my closest friends there’d be no late night wine visits. Of course I missed them immensely but here it is a few years later and I finally have a work schedule that only takes up three days a week! That leaves me two days to be creative and the weekends are mine! Balance came for me by accepting change, setting small goals that fit into the bigger picture, and enjoying every day as it comes. After all beauty is where you find it. Exercise This is one of the most important areas for keeping youthful. I first started exercising back in my club days. Of course then it was vanity-based more than health-oriented. I lifted weights heavily and was only happy if I could look over my shoulder and see that ass I saw from puberty 3 inches higher. I’d make sure that my chest was so built, my cleavage ensured that the top three buttons were never getting closed. I was out late three nights a week and I honestly don’t know where I got the stamina to do that to myself. Certainly the popularity of energy drinks and incredulous amounts of money spent on supplements and protein drinks pumped up my jam. As I grew older and gained more experience taking on more adult responsibilities, I realized that exercise was a great stress reliever and that keeping my strength, endurance and flexibility at a higher level than what my job required was a balanced approach. Yoga and has been a constant in my life for 25 years and now I challenge myself just to do something for at least 15 minutes every morning. Sometimes I set a goal to increase my running. I am currently working myself up to a half-marathon distance to be completed in no particular time between now and when the leaves fall. I have a nerve injury which requires some yoga every day for relief and I sprinkle various body-weight-only exercises ranging from Iron yoga, TRX or sometimes just to walk to the coffee shop in the morning if that’s all I feel like doing. I have also designed my little salon based on the prairie lifestyle, with lots of gardening or wood piling. Some days that becomes all the exercise I need. I decided to incorporate exercise into my home as a way to have fun. I have hidden hooks in beams to hang my TRX. I just picked up a set of gymnastic rings to hang and work on my core strength as well. Hidden away in my staircase is the chin-up bar so that as I’m running up and down the stairs I can throw in a couple pull-ups. Now pushing 50, I’ve decided to forfeit my gym membership and turn fitness into fun around the house. It’s a creative approach but if you can turn your home into one big set of monkey bars you won’t even know that you’re having a workout. 66

Good Eats This is the fun one! It’s all about letting loose and being bad-ass once in a while. The trick is keeping an important ratio that call the 20% Toxification Rate. Five days a week I eat clean, healthy, real food. On one of my days off, I end the day with a massage and then I have an ice cream and eat whatever the hell else I want that night. Then, I get right back on my clean lifestyle until Sunday. Horizontal Sunday. That’s when I order three pizzas and only get out of bed to get delivery at the door.

The 20% indulgence makes it easy to stick to clean-eating the rest of the week. Indulging doesn’t just relate to food either, it also means going and buying yourself something nice if you want. Maybe you’d like to go on a trip? Everybody needs a vacation. It’s really easy to get sidetracked with the responsibilities of children, relationships and career. For me, all of those things are easily managed if I feel like I’ve gotten to cut loose once in a while. Also, treat holidays like a “get out of jail free” card. You have to live your life. There’s no excuse to not have stuffing at Christmas dinner or not have peeps at Easter. Valentine’s Day is a great day to give yourself chocolates, especially if you’re single. If you use this 20% indulgence method, your body will adjust to clean eating in a realistic way that doesn’t leave you feeling like you have to deny yourself any of your favourite things. You may even notice your cravings for sugary, fatty foods naturally subsides. I’ve tried and tested this for years now and upping my retox rate to two months of the year in the summer and outside of that, two nights a week for the rest of the year, my health jumped from perfect to impeccable. Try it, that’s why I feel so beautiful! Style & Fashion Studying men’s tailoring early in my design career opened my eyes to the world of fit and ease. Historical references trace the beginnings of tailoring as far back as the 1300s. London’s Saville Row is today’s bespoke epicentre with a rich and well-fitted history. Now I’m not going to suggest that you need a three-piece double-breasted suit with a waistcoat pocket watch and Winkle pickers. However, I will say that a well-fitting garment of style and comfort will make you feel like you can glide into any scene with confidence. My body changes so much depending on what type of exercise I am doing that I often buy pants in two or three sizes so I can wear my slim Tailored lines no matter what fitness journey I am on. I usually have to buy a large shirt to accommodate my upper body but I always choose a slim fit. It’s best to have no more than an inch of ease in your garments to provide a good fit but enough room to move around freely. PREFERREDMAGAZINE.CA

Many people mistakenly wear smaller clothes thinking it makes them look more muscular when it actually has the opposite effect. Some people wear larger clothes thinking it will make them look thinner but the reality is a look that is frumpy. This is why I always go to my neighbourhood vogue tailor and ask his opinion. His experience guides me to what looks best for my size and colouring. I am always pleasantly surprised as he knows the latest trends but never takes me across the line to where I’m trying too hard. 50 may be the new 30, but there’s nothing worse than trying to dress like a 20-year-old since it can I actually make you look like you’re 80. Instead, I choose pieces to add to my wardrobe that are classic and never go out of style because they have a timeless quality. It makes getting dressed very easy at all times because you’ll only ever see shades of gray, black with a little brown in my closet. Occasionally, I get really wild and crazy and try out purple or green shirts. One can always have a custom piece made as well but I’m still holding out for the special occasion to have that done. Perhaps for the opera? Soul? It’s in the music. Calm and Cool I remember growing up and watching the news at five, hearing one story at a time. These days we see 10-person panel discussions arguing over the state of current affairs while stocks and bonds are flashing to the left of the screen and weather in three different countries flashes in another. Of course, we may not notice all this because we’re on our phone with Snapchat and Twitter accounts open, checking email and texts while filtering away any blemishes in our photos before they make it through to our Facebook and Instagram accounts. With all this activity, our brains never shutoff which can lead to stress and in turn contribute to making us look haggard. Regardless of how “busy” you are, build-in time to decompress every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Sometimes the calm you need is as easy as breathing deeply three times. This can actually trick your brain into thinking it’s in a state of relaxation if you need a quick release. Or, try waking up in the morning after a good night’s sleep and doing a little dance to help you unwind. I have had some of those same tough emotional, financial or personal struggles that we all have, where I’ve felt overwhelmed wishing I could have my mind, body and soul shut down even just for a minute - here and there to give me a break from it all. Well, there is a practical way to get to that kind of a place and I suggest it comes from finding your passion. A thing that you love so much, time passes without you even knowing. For me, gardening is one of my passions. I can step out when the sun comes up and suddenly the sun is going down it seems like only an hour had passed. Whatever the passion, making time for it will help you recharge, put a spring in your step and have you feeling years younger.

Additionally, abandoned factories located in inner-city Detroit have now been converted into prominent headquarters for notable brands. The Shinola factory is one such brand that has enlivened the previously abandoned streets of the industrial sector of the city. Shinola was founded in 2011 within Detroit and focuses on manufacturing luxury goods such as watches, bags, wallets, turntables and bicycles in a quality process that results in impeccable craftsmanship and an appeal that is unique and unmatched. Since its beginnings, Shinola has expanded to open retail locations across North America. When she was a teenager, Jordana Woodland began collecting centuries-old perfume bottles and vintage lingerie from all around the world, intrigued by each item’s elegant detail. Over years of searching specialty shops and flea markets, Woodland’s love for exquisitely crafted goods aligned with her growing fascination with the concept of boudoir: a delicately curated space that invites women to indulge in unhurried self-care. Launched in 2011, Woodland’s lifestyle brand Naked Princess bridges those passions and brings a greater purpose to the art of boudoir. As Creative Director and CEO of Naked Princess— an L.A.-based company featuring effortlessly chic loungewear, lingerie, beauty products, and home goods—Woodland has pursued a mission of encouraging the busiest of women to take time to restore and rejuvenate. By guiding women in creating a boudoir of their own, Woodland aims to erase the undeserved guilt of self-care and replace it with radiant self-confidence. Born in the Philippines, Woodland was raised in a military family and lived throughout Asia and North America as a child, including stints in Guam and Japan. But wherever her family ended up, one element of her home life remained constant: her mother’s elaborate morning ritual of readying herself for the day. “I remember watching my mom get ready at the little station in her bedroom, almost like she was on a movie set,” says Woodland. “It was her uninterrupted time to herself, separate from her time with her family. I love that she always took that time and wasn’t ever ashamed of it.” As she grew older, Woodland explored her love for design and fashion, wholly defying her family’s expectations that she take on a career in medicine or law. Eventually landing in Los Angeles and breaking into modeling, she then tapped into her entrepreneurial spirit with the launch of Naked Princess. Under Woodland’s hands-on direction, the company set its focus on creating timelessly beautiful products from the highest-quality materials—a commitment to craftsmanship that often finds Woodland sourcing the finest laces and modal from around the globe. With its flagship boutique opening in West Hollywood’s famed Melrose Place District in early 2014, Naked Princess quickly drew a passionate following that includes a dedicated cadre of celebrity clientele.

In recent years, Naked Princess has found itself in high demand at fivestar hotels and spas across the country, thanks partly to its shift from a lingerie-based line to a lifestyle brand offering everything a woman needs to fill her boudoir. As Woodland explains, that shift was shaped by her own experience as an endlessly busy CEO and mom. “It really 76

hit me hard when I started balancing running a business with raising three kids—I started feeling that guilt about taking any time out for myself,” she recalls. “Because I believe that time is so important, I wanted to create products that helped women feel beautiful but were also very practical and easy.”

Now based in Whitefish, Montana—where Naked Princess opened a boutique in early 2017—Woodland has brought even more clarity to her vision since settling into the calmer pace of her new hometown. To that end, she sees Naked Princess as embracing the pure pleasure of glamour while ultimately empowering women to deeper fulfillment. “When women treat themselves well, they’re more likely to treat other people well too,” Woodland says. “Taking time to do what makes them feel happy and beautiful sets the tone for the rest of their lives, so that they can go be a better mom or friend or worker, or whatever else they need to be. The idea of helping women out and giving them that permission to live better is what keeps me inspired every day.”
