Becoming a TikTok STAR

“If you work hard enough then you can achieve with what you’re working at. If your dreams doesn’t scare you, it probably isn’t big enough”

Chase Keith, a young American from Ohio based in LA, became popular by making short comedy videos on this generation's popular app called TikTok (formerly known as Musical.ly) where young people post short videos of themselves for comedy, lipsyncing, singing or dancing — like karaoke but in today's technological age. "I thought originally it was just like a joke app where I didn't really wanna be part of it, but you know some of my friends were hopping on it so I was like, hey I'll try it. As a joke, I made videos and sent it to my friends and a couple of those videos took off. Then I just expanded it to my other social medias, then eventually uploaded on You tube. Then I got invited to a tour and started collaborating with other influencers and from there it just took off", says Chase who reportedly has over 2.7 million fans on TikTok. Chase mentions how he handles fame at a young age by learning to adjust to it. "If I'm in a public place it's probably once that I get recognized but it's not anything too crazy". He also mentions that although he has many fans, he does not consider himself famous but sees himself having a large platform, which he finds amazing because he has a great influence on his age group. "But you know the main goal is to make my fans smile, they always DM me and say, 'hey your videos make me really happy since I'm going through stuff', which is amazing", says the young influencer. He occasionally goes to church and has an everyday advice to himself and others to "treat others the way you want to be treated". The young TikTok star deals with the challenges of fame in his everyday life from changing public schools to on line. "School was getting a little too much, like people were recording me when I didn't really want them to, it's not of my friends but just random people taking pictures of me in class and posting it that I didn't know". It was a mixture of his parent's idea and his to transfer says Chase, "It was just too much with getting auditions and modeling and working between jobs, so I had to transfer on line. The transfer is a little too hard since I'm not used to it, but I'm getting in the groove everyday".

Chase has been focusing on transitioning to modeling and acting by working for Aéropostale, Disney and booked a movie for a classified Youtube network airing next year. Although he prefers acting, he still takes social media and modeling seriously and professionally. The young star always had big dreams after high-school to be in a big movie, "but of course not everyone will make it into the industry, it's really hard out here, but if that happens then I'd go to medical school to become a doctor". "A lot of people say that they're never gonna make it, they don't have a good look, they don't like this, but in the end it doesn't really matter about the followers. If you just want to become an influencer, a Youtuber, a model or actor, if you just put your mind into it, and I know it sounds possibly cheesy but if you honestly work on it and set your goal high every single day, you'll work your way up to it", says the young man. Chase's advice to those who have big dreams is simple: "If you work hard enough then you can achieve with what you're working at. If your dreams doesn't scare you, it probably isn't big enough". He even talks about the negative aspects of being a young influencer is not being old enough, “I’m not 18 yet, I’m not able to do bigger stuff. My mom works so she’s not able to be my guardian when I need a guardian at certain jobs. So I do miss out on job opportunities." While the positive aspects are: being self-employed, doing his own brand deals, and doing a job he loves while getting paid.

OFF TO AFRICA WITH JASON

PHOTOGRAPHY & STORY BY JASON DEINSON

Southern Africa for me, was unexpected in the most beautiful sense. It was a trip that wasn’t necessarily top of my ‘bucket-list’ as much as it was one that I simply went on because I was invited. Knowing little to nothing about the history, culture or geography the continent apart from what I imagined through The Lion King. Apart from starting the trip with lost baggage forcing me and my fellow travelers to go the first few nights bare-bones minimal and then being caught camping through the night in a wild and unexpected torrential storm in the middle of the desert; I couldn’t help but remember to be unshaken or worried as I remember the rich wildlife moments experienced like getting up close and personal with a tower of giraffes during sunset, or witnessing a lioness and her cub quite literally split animal crowded watering holes in half to make a clear path for them to cross, only to be within meters of their presence sitting in an uncaged 4x4. From getting personal with wildlife in the national parks, to getting personal with the beautiful souls that guide us through the Okavango Delta. The portraits captured are of the polers whom have made it their life poling and guiding visitors such as myself in their version of a canoe traditionally translated to ‘Mokoro’, a fiberglass type of canoe which they use standing on the back to pole through the long grass of the delta. They then treated us to a walk through the game reserve portion of the delta where more giraffes, elephants and hippos all shared freely, sharing their beautiful sunset with us. It was a trip I’ll never forget, and will be eternally grateful for.

I MET KODAK BACK STAGE ONE NIGHT AFTER THE LA SHOW WHILE ON TOUR WITH COOL. THIS WAS MY FIRST TIME MEETING THIS GUY. IT WAS HIS FIRST WEEK OUT OF JAIL. I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT FROM HIM WHEN I SAW HIM. I JUST REMEMBER THE STORIES AND ALL THE CRAZY SHIT ON THE NEWS. KODAK WAS BACK STAGE WITH GANG OF PEOPLE WITH HIM. OUT OF NOW WHERE I GOT THE CONFIDENCE TO GO UP TO HIM AND ASK HIM FOR A PHOTO. I TOLD HIM I REALLY LOVE HIS MUSIC. THEN OUT OF NO WHERE WE BOTH JUST STARTED SMILING LIKE IT WAS A COOL VIBE. I PULLED OUT MY $5.00 CVS DISPOSABLE CAMERA I ALWAYS TAKE WITH ME. FLASH AND THEN FLASH! I NOTICE HE WAS JUST GIVING POSITIVE VIBES EACH TIME I SNAPPED A PHOTO. I DIDN'T EXPECT HIM TO BE THIS COOL. WHICH LET ME KNOW THAT THE MEDIA REALLY HAS EVERYONE FUCKED UP ON HOW PEOPLE REALLY ARE.

JMSN

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DEVIN L"AMOREAUX STORY BY ANTHONY SUPREME

For those who don’t know what does “JMSN” stand for and how did you come up with it ? JMSN doesn't stand for anything. It's just JMSN. I pronounce it "Jameson", but you can pronounce is J-M-S-N if you want. I have also heard "jimson". That's cool too. I’ve been a fan of your sense 2012. Pllaje , Priscilla are my favorite albums of yours! How has the journey been to now ? It's been good. Have learned a lot along the way and grown a lot from it. With that being said I’ve watched your brand Change over the years when I first saw your videos it felt as if you where trying to fit in with a sound. But over the past years I feel you found your own sound and own lane. I feel you 100% always know your sound, know your style & know your art direction as well? How did you come to this conclusion? I'm just exploring and worrying less and less about what someone else feels about it as I go. I try to care more about how I feel about it. I think that's the surest way to be the most honest in what I do

Craziest things that has happen on tour ? People have come to see a show of mine hahaha Craziest fan moment? Can't think of anything speciďŹ c. What is something someone misunderstands about you the most ? I don't know you would have to ask that person that misunderstands me. What is being an artist mean to you ? Everything.

You have managed to transition with time. From music needing to be on blogs, to having a heavy Sound Cloud following to now streaming& play-list. How have you been able to transition with the changes ? Also, what have you learn from it ? How has it helped you grow as a artist ? I don't really know how. I just try to ďŹ gure it out as I go. There's so much different stuff going on and its constantly changing. I guess it's just trying to be aware of what's going on and using any tools given to you to promote or share your art. I've learned that all these things seem to have their waves of excitement and then after that it feels like it becomes a niche that you have to keep updated on. Just don't forget about any of them cause you never know who's on what. Gotta still update that myspace page you know? Never know who's still on my space. hahaha How has your music grown over the years? I've grown a lot. I've become a better guitar player, producer, mixer, writer, singer and person. What do you thinking is most important ? Don't understand this question hahaha With your latest album how do you feel it’s different than the rest ? It's different in every aspect. I've grown a lot. I've become a better guitar player, producer, mixer, writer, singer and person. That has bled into this new album. What direction do you see yourself going in 2019 ? I'm not sure yet. I have a couple ideas, but still need to ush them out and see where it all goes.

What’s it like being famous at a young age?

"I don't really see myself as famous, I just kinda see myself as a teenager going around, living my life you know, I don't really pay too much attention to that" How has your life changed after fame? "I started traveling a lot more and I've always wanted to travel so I can see new places and meet new people" What made you want to start making music? "I've been wanting to do music for a long time because music is a big passion of mine and who doesn't like music?" Do you like being known as the kid that went viral overnight from “flossing or do you wish to be known as something else? "I hate that people only see me as the "floss kid" because I have other talents, but people just don't realist that yet"

Have you ever gotten bullied because you became well-known over a dance move? "On-line yeah, but I mean not like physically cos everybody in person, they all love me and they're my best friend you know. "I just kinda like, laugh at their comments, I don't really pay attention to them much either" What's your dream career after high school? "I kinda wanna get into long term acting. Acting seems like a lot of fun." Best client you’ve worked with? "Um, I don't wanna say names cos theres too many" Favorite thing to do during your spare time? "VIDEO GAMES"

SOPHINA MESS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANTHONY SUPREME

How did you both meet ? CJ : She was at one of my studio sessions with an old friend then we spoke a little bit over joints and the creation of music. The next day I slid in her dms and it’s been history every since. EMILIA: We met at one of his studio sessions, & what he thinks was a day- was closer to a month before he slid in my DMs. Asking about some THC infused honey I had & it just continued on its own from there.

What did it take for you to give him or her a chance ? CJ: Faith cause I didn’t think she’d be into me and was surprised when she showed interest. EMILIA: My spirit guides giving me the green light after feeling like it was right. What was the first date or meet up like ? How did it go ? CJ: Our first date was at this Italian restaurant by Sheepshead somewhere. We tried to find a spot with a good yelp review and when we walked in reeking of weed, there was mad cops in there eating haha very awkward but all in all the date went well. EMILIA: first meet up since he told y’all our first date. Was basically us smoking weed & talking in my crib from around 10pm to 7am or so. It was simple but intimate in the right way. What are both your ethnicity’s? CJ: I’m Jamaican and Bajan (Barbados) EMILIA: I’m Puerto Rican

And what have you learned from each other cultures? And about yourself ? CJ: I learned to not piss her off before she start saying the Spanish words I don’t know haha just kidding. She not like that. I’ve come to find new appreciation for the Cuchifritos in Brooklyn and the food from her culture. EMILIA growing up in Flatbush made me a bit familiar culturally, as far as food & music go. Being with him has expanded so much on that. Also shown me the many similarities between our cultures too. EM: growing up in Flatbush made me a bit familiar culturally, as far as food & music go. Being with him has expanded so much on that. Also shown me the many similarities between our cultures too. How has the internet and social media helped your careers and how do you support each other careers. With the platforms you are both creating? CJ : Well me personally, the internet gave me a platform to share my music and connect with my supporters then that in turn allows me to do music for a living. EM : social media & the internet have been the biggest things for me creating a platform. It’s how I’ve been able to create what I have on such a large scale. I do my best to not only use my platform for others & to make my money, but also share it with my man when I can. What’s both of your favorite parts of the city ? CJ: My favorite part of the city is Home, Bedford Stuyvesant and Flatbush. EMILIA Flatbush, Coney Island, Sunset & LES. Do you both see yourself living in NYC forever ? CJ: Id love to but you know what they say you can’t live in the hood forever and expect to be safe. I’ll proly move out of the hood soon but if I could fire brownstone on a quiet block in the stuy I’m in there EMILIA always wanted to, but between the way the city & Brooklyn has changedalong with my lifestyle ... unlikely. Maybe a vacation home here, only for the summers. Ain’t nothin like a NYC summer. What’s love to you both on a human level ? CJ : unconditional appreciation and care for someone EMILIA Unconditionally deeply caring about someone’s overall wellbeing, in a variety of ways. it’s hard to sum it up. Love is more something you feel.
