... DAY TRIP IDEAS
Whether just passing through or planning an eight-hour excursion, we’ve got great options for the day traveler. Choose from one of the following or ask us to customize a package that best fits your tastes and timetable.
Amish Country Highlights
Groups welcome the chance to travel scenic country roads frequented by horse-drawn buggies and stop at quaint shops to fill their bags with hand-crafted goods and sample local treats. The best way to experience this is with a local setp-on guide who provides tips and insights into this unique culter. Plus the best way to appreciate Amish cooking is to learn secrets first-hand from an Amish cook then top it off with a hearty dinner in an Amish home. Additional day trip highlights include the popular Shipshewana Flea Market, Amish Acres dinner/theatre and shopping at American Countryside Farmers Market.
History Revived – A Fabulous Mystery Trip
Elkhart - Experience the privileged lifestyle of 1910 touring Ruthmere, featured on A&E’s “America’s Castles.” At the Midwest Museum of American Art, groups appreciate the artistry of Norman Rockwell viewing the Midwest’s largest collections of signed lithographs and collotypes. A lunch cruise aboard the River Queen is a delightful way to learn area history. Linton’s Enchanted Gardens provide home decor and gift emporium, a shopper paradise.
The Capital’s Finest
Elkhart - Elkhart boasts the titles of both “RV” and “Band Instrument Capital.” The new RV/MH Heritage Museum showcases that history with an intriguing display of vehicles dating back to the early 1900’s. What a comparison when groups tour a local RV manufacturing facility! While, an outdoor “Concert on the Green” provides a summer respite, a must-stop is a guided tour at Ruthmere, the Beaux Art House Museum located along the river. A step-on guide gives the “scoop” on the area’s musical history.
Embrace the Pace
Nappanee - The pace is easy as a knowledgeable step-on-guide leads groups through pastoral Amish countryside to learn about Amish culture, visit quaint shops and businesses, and enjoy lunch in an Amish home. The new Nappanee Heritage Center offers a glimpse into the area’s past and celebrates the cabinetry business that made Nappanee famous. The “Dutch Kitchen” or “Hoosier” cabinet was invented here and there is a large collection of oneof-a-kind cabinets on display. The pace quickens with a stop at Borkholder Dutch Village, a 60,000 square foot, climate-controlled marketplae,
or a bustling RV factory.

3:45-4:30 p.m. Benedict’s Nursery Alpine Plant Guided Tour - no admission fee, class optional at extra fee
Stepping into Benedict’s Nursery is a bit like stepping into a scene from a fairytale – tiny, remarkable plants that make ordinary plants seem huge in comparison fill garden racks and specially made containers. That’s because Esther Benedict specializes in alpines and other unusual species that are seldom seen in a garden shop. It may seem curious that an Old German Baptist woman living in Nappanee is knowledgeable about species that manage to survive in high altitude and harsh dessert terrain, but it’s her hobby. Esther can tell you all about these amazing little plants. She also makes and sells rugged, rock-like hyper-tufa pots ideally suited for these hearty miniatures and gives classes on making your own. 5 p.m.

The Glory of Peonies—no admission fee
From mid-May through mid-June, an intoxicating fragrance drifts over a patch of riotous color in Goshen - the peony field in bloom at Oscar Morse Peonies. The farm offers 60 top-ranked, award-winning herbaceous hybrid and lactiflora peonies – with about 1,000 plants in the field. The historic farm’s name honors its original owners, but it’s now owned by Mike and Stephanie Weber. Locals call Stephanie the peony lady. It’s easy to see why. Soon after her family moved to the farm she began indulging her passion for Indiana's state flower. Now the family grows and sells bare root peonies on site and and via the internet. Stephanie gives fascinating guided tours of the field in bloom, giving tips on peony planting and care, pointing out the different cultivars, extolling their virtues and telling the stories behind each variety. For sure, she gets everyone hooked on peonies!
