HOW TO PLAN
EXTRAORDINARY
FAMILY BUCKET LIST VACATIONS
Use these expert tips to plan bucket list trips for your multigenerational group and make your family’s travel dreams come true
By Nancy Schretter, Contributing Editor
Bucket list trips and family group vacations are the top priorities for travelers this year. Today’s generations crave togetherness, understanding that family bonds and memories are our most treasured possessions and the future is not guaranteed.
A recent survey by Squaremouth.com, a leading travel insurance marketplace, reports that family and multigenerational vacations are surpassing all other types of group travel in 2025. In addition, the spike in once-in-a-lifetime trips is continuing, with 40% of surveyed travelers set to take a bucket list trip this year. A survey by Beaches Resorts revealed that roughly 70% of parents and grandchildren want grandparents to be part of their trips.

Portage Glacier, one of the most visited glaciers in Alaska.

Bucket list trips are an ideal way for generations to share special moments and strengthen family bonds.
“Multigenerational family travel is an amazing way to create memories and share experiences, and it benefits the whole family," says Kimberly Greiner, US public relations manager for G Adventures. “It opens up new experiences to kids, allows grandparents and older family members to see places with fresh eyes, and allows the whole family to spend time with each other outside their normal daily life.”
WHY FAMILIES SHOULD CREATE A TRAVEL BUCKET LIST
Charting your family’s travel future is powerful and inspiring. Families need to think about their travel goals and visualize them to bring them to life. Doing this brings your family’s travel desires into focus and jumpstarts the planning process.
“Creating a family travel bucket list is an incredible way for multigenerational families to dream and plan together,” says Patty Monahan, Founder of Our Whole Village, a Virtuoso member travel agency specializing in meaningful family and multigenerational vacations. “It fosters anticipation, excitement, and shared purpose, bringing everyone into the conversation.”

AMAZING BUCKET LIST TRIPS FOR FAMILY GROUPS
If you’re thinking of planning an awe-inspiring bucket list trip for your multigenerational family group, here are seven enticing options to consider.
AFRICAN SAFARI
Safari expeditions offer thrilling opportunities for families to encounter incredible wildlife, experience breathtaking scenic landscapes and engage in authentic cultural immersion. South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, and Botswana are popular places to spot the Big Five on these memorable family trips of a lifetime.

ALASKA
Known as “The Last Frontier,” Alaska is filled with exciting outdoor adventures, abundant wildlife, rich Alaska Native cultures, spectacular scenery, and seasonal opportunities to view the dazzling Northern Lights. Multigenerational families will bond while sharing extraordinary experiences on Alaska cruises and tours.

COSTA RICA
Tropical Costa Rica offers abundant wildlife and biodiversity, fun-filled adventures, and engaging cultural experiences against a backdrop of stunning natural beauty. Families flock to popular locations such as Manuel Antonio National Park, Arenal Volcano, Monteverde Cloud Forest, and Guanacaste’s sunlit shorelines.

Japan is known for its stunning traditional temples and cultural heritage sites.
FOR FAMILY BUCKET LIST TRAVEL PLANNING 8 EXPERT TIPS
If you have bucket list goals for your family group, take these eight steps to turn your lifelong travel dreams into reality.
1
Think About Why You Loved Your Most Memorable Trips
Every family group’s bucket list is unique. Rather than adopting someone else’s list of popular destinations, it’s essential to personalize the planning process and match your passions. Reflect on the trips and destinations you’ve enjoyed most, the travel experiences you’ve treasured and how they made you feel. This exercise will help you to determine your family’s travel styles and preferences and concentrate on what matters most to your group.
“Think about themes before destinations: is food a big deal for your family? History? Hiking and active adventures?” says Greiner. “From there, you can start to narrow down places that check the boxes.”

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK
Multigenerational families will treasure their memorable experiences at Arizona’s Grand Canyon. There’s something for everyone, including hiking and mule rides, wildlife spotting, enrichment activities, Junior Ranger programs, and enjoying the views.
IRELAND
Ireland warmly welcomes family groups. Generations will enjoy exploring the Emerald Isle’s historic castles, vibrant cultural heritage, action-packed activities, and stunning panoramic vistas. Attractions include Dublin’s highlights, the Ring of Kerry, Blarney Castle, and Cliffs of Moher.
JAPAN

The island nation of Japan offers an incredible combination of ancient culture, scenic beauty and modern fun. Highlights for families include historic temples and castles, bustling cities, delicious cuisine, museums and memorials, and fantastic theme parks and attractions, like Tokyo Disneyland.

THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS
All generations can enjoy the vacation of their dreams in the enchanting Hawaiian Islands. Filled with the spirit of Aloha, this tropical island paradise features gorgeous beaches, towering volcanoes, thrilling outdoor adventures, enriching cultural experiences, and natural wonders.

2 Make Wish Lists And Brainstorm Trips Together
Travel experts have learned that the most successful multigenerational vacations result from working together as a group. This helps to surface key issues and travel motivations.
“The best way to create a family travel bucket list is to involve everyone in the process,” Monahan says. She recommends having each family member create their own list of dream trips and then sit down together to share their travel dreams, research destinations, and prioritize them based on interests and feasibility. Our Whole Village provides a template that adults and children can use when writing down their bucket lists.
3Talk About Your Trip Goals, Expectations And Interests
Members of your multigenerational family group will likely have differing notions about the ideal bucket list vacation. It's key to talk about travel styles, objectives and the vision for each trip and why it’s important. Think about the core memories you want to create with your family.
“By understanding each family member’s travel aspirations, you’re not just planning trips—you’re creating a roadmap for meaningful connections and lifelong memories,” noted Patty Monahan. “You also learn so much about your kids and how their passions and interests evolve over the years.”
4 Discuss Budgets and Plan Ambitious Dream Trips Well In Advance
When planning multiple trips of a lifetime for your family group, it’s essential to think ahead. The best hotels and experiences in popular destinations fill up well in advance, as do flights. In addition, budgeting and saving for these kinds of vacations can take time. It’s key to talk about budgets and set a

spending level your group is comfortable with to keep expectations in line.
Work together to develop the ideal frequency and schedule for your bucket list trips, perhaps leaving room for less extravagant vacations and spontaneous getaways. “Start with big dreaming ideas and narrow down from there,” suggests Greiner.
5
Create A Bucket List Travel Timeline With Ages And Stages In Mind
Families can approach creating their bucket lists in the same intentional way that they do long-term financial planning. The ages of children and grandparents are often an important factor in aligning the timing of dream trips. Create a spreadsheet or template delineating family members’ ages and interests over time, consider the experiences you want to have and map your trips accordingly. While the entire group may envision participating in some trips, other vacations may appeal only to certain family members.
Think about the goals for each trip and the physical considerations involved, and discuss them with your group. “Many parents and grandparents understand that exposing younger kids to different places, cultures, and even foods can build bonds and tolerance and bridge gaps,” says Kimberly Greiner of G Adventures. “Plus, we're seeing travelers who are staying active longer, and that means they can enjoy trips and experiences with the younger members of their family in a way that maybe past generations haven't been able to,” Greiner adds.
After having your discussions, start slotting your bucket list trips into your timeline. A highly knowledgeable family travel advisor can help by suggesting the best ages for each destination, budgeting considerations and other issues. “Start with achievable trips and work your way toward more ambitious adventures,” suggests Patty Monahan of Our Whole Village.

6
Consider Activities, Pacing And Accessibility Issues
Multigenerational bucket list trips should include something for every interest and age group. “It’s important to consider activity levels, individual desires, and finding that sweet spot where everyone has something special on the itinerary that they are looking forward to,” says Kimberly Greiner. Welldesigned small group trips offer that kind of travel experience for multigenerational families, and the planning is stress-free. Greiner reports that G Adventures’ National Geographic Family Journeys are more popular than ever, offering itineraries that keep everyone engaged. Other factors are important to keep in mind as well. “When planning bucket list vacations, it’s important to consider accessibility for all ages, picking destinations that offer a variety of activities, and selecting accommodations that balance communal bonding with private downtime,” says Patty Monahan. “Pacing is key, so blend structured activities with moments of rest to ensure everyone enjoys the experience.”
7 Work With A Top-Notch Travel Advisor
Bucket list family trips are priceless experiences, and vacation time spent together is precious. That’s why it’s important to bring an experienced professional into play. Skilled family travel agents provide expert guidance and take the stress out of planning memorable family vacations. Using their knowledge and wealth of connections, these adept travel professionals bring bucket list trips to life with exciting adventures and unique experiences to match your family’s interests.

Good travel advisors are valuable assets in other ways as well. They understand today’s complex travel scene and can help your group design the perfect trip within your budget and navigate a vast array of issues. Travel advisors also may have access to special perks and deals that aren’t publicly available. In addition, they can manage all the details and assist if things go awry before, during or after your vacation.
Once the bucket list timeline has been created, travel agents can help family groups manage some of the pre-travel details, such as documentation requirements and travel insurance. They can also recommend ways families can elevate their plans and make them more meaningful. “Having a bucket list facilitates better pre-trip preparation, as families can engage in activities like reading books, watching movies, and cooking meals related to their chosen destinations, leading to a more enriching travel experience,” suggests Patty Monahan.

8
Start Financial Planning And Pre-Trip Preparations
Once you have a clear understanding of your bucket list travel timeline and required budget, map out a financial plan and begin budgeting for your vacations. Grandparents or others may be paying for the trips in some cases. You may also be able to cover some of the costs using travel rewards points.
Experts at Allianz Partners, a global leader in travel insurance, also suggest automatically transferring a certain percentage of each monthly paycheck to a high-yield savings

account. Cash-back rewards credit cards can also help you save for your journeys.
Epic bucket list trips strengthen family bonds and forge priceless core memories that generations will treasure for a lifetime. These kinds of trips can be transformational, and it’s key to maximize every moment of life while you can. The time to start planning is now. DR

MEAL PLANNING
FOR LARGE FAMILY GATHERINGS
From potlucks and group prep to shopping for budget-friendly group meals, this guide will help you plan a cost-efficient feast for the ages
Multigenerational gatherings provide numerous opportunities to bond, whether playing

board games or sightseeing together. Groups who book a vacation rental property have a slight advantage over those who book hotel or resort stays.
Bonding happens around the dining table, enjoying a homecooked or catered meal in an intimate and private environment. These moments

also allow family members to share passeddown recipes and cherished memories from their time in the kitchen.
The Importance of Family Reunion Meal Planning
Practicing affordable meal planning and budget-friendly group meals are essential when planning a large family gathering to avoid overspending. Without a clear plan, you risk compromising your financial well-being and peace of mind. Whether you're cooking everything yourself or opting for catering, here are some helpful tips for family reunion meal planning.
Budget-Friendly Group Meal Planning Tips
Financial worries can take away from the joy of any occasion. That’s why cost-effective meal planning is crucial when preparing for a family gathering. Take a look at the ultimate guide for reunion food to find more inspiration.
• Choose Budget-Friendly Ingredients: Stick to low-cost options like rice, pasta, and beans. You might already have some of these affordable staples in your pantry.
• Prioritize Hearty, Filling Dishes: Focus on meals that leave guests satisfied without requiring large portions, saving both money and time.
Make a Budget
To stay on track financially, create a budget. While you may need to research ingredient prices or restaurant costs, budgeting is easier with the help of financial apps such as:
• Goodbudget
• Mint
• Quicken
Match Your Meal to the Venue
Consider the setting of your event and how the food complements the environment. A banquet hall may feel too formal for finger foods, just as a sirloin steak might seem out of place at a picnic.
Staples like rice, beans, and pasta are not only affordable ingredients, they can easily transform into spectacular dishes that can serve large crowds.

Once you decide on the type of food you’d like, draft a list of everything you need that you don’t already have in your cabinets. Sticking to this list will help you avoid unnecessary purchases.
Shopping for Large Meals
• Buy in Bulk: Wholesale clubs offer bulk items at significantly lower prices than standard grocery stores.
• Visit Discount Grocery Stores: Consider shopping at discount chains or farmers' markets, where locally grown produce is often more affordable.
Choose Seasonal Ingredients
Produce tends to be more affordable when it’s in season because it's more abundant and easier to source locally, reducing transportation and storage costs. Paying attention to what
fruits and vegetables are in season can help you save money while also enjoying fresher, tastier ingredients at your family reunion. Check out local farmers' markets and grocers for produce.
Easy Group Meal Prep
Sometimes, creativity is key when planning budget-friendly group meals. Complex recipes may become overwhelming if your reunion is large or runs late. The simpler the dishes, the better.
Family Potluck Ideas
Potluck-style gatherings are ideal for large parties because they take the pressure off one person to provide everything. Instead, each guest can bring a dish. This is especially helpful when you know who excels at certain recipes. For example:
• Grandma’s baked mac-n-cheese
• Aunt Lynn’s homemade brownies

Cook Simple, Large-Batch Meals
To save time, choose meals that can be made in large batches, such as casseroles, soups, or pasta dishes. These are not only delicious but also versatile, allowing for different variations. Grill for a Crowd: If weather permits, consider a barbecue. This will enable guests to enjoy both the food and the experience of cooking outdoors together.
Prepare Food in Advance
Not every dish has to be cooked on the day of the event. Prepping meals in advance saves time, reduces stress, and cuts costs by avoiding last-minute ingredient purchases. Use FreezerFriendly Recipes: From one-pot meals to hearty soups, storing dishes in airtight containers makes it easy to reheat them when needed.
Incorporate Local Cuisine
Consider incorporating local cuisine and culture into your reunion for a memorable experience. Researching nearby restaurants can
help you discover the area’s signature dishes.
• Recreate Local Specialties: If you have time, find a local dish to recreate at home. Out-oftown guests will appreciate the chance to savor authentic regional flavors.
• Use Locally Sourced Ingredients: Visit farmers' markets and discuss standout produce and recipe ideas with vendors.
• Explore Traditional Recipes: Historical cookbooks can provide insight into regional dishes, adding a vintage flair to your event.
Exploring Restaurants for Large Groups
Hosting your family reunion at a restaurant can relieve much of the planning and preparation, but choosing the ideal location is still essential. Selecting the right venue ensures that your
Photo

event runs smoothly and provides a memorable experience for everyone.
Find a Budget-Friendly Restaurant
• Prioritize family-style dining or prix fixe menus: These options help keep costs low.
• Ensure ample seating: The venue should comfortably accommodate your group.
Negotiate Discounts
• Inquire about group deals or special perks: Some restaurants offer discounts or complimentary items like free desserts.
• Plan ahead: Know your number of attendees and have an estimated bill in mind.
• Book early: Ask well in advance to secure the best price.
Catering for Reunions
Another option is to hire a catering company.
• Consider food trucks or buffet-style meals: These options tend to be more budgetfriendly.
• Look into local restaurants or grocery store catering: They may offer more affordable services than traditional catering companies.
• Combine catering with homemade dishes: Let catering handle the main dishes while you and your loved ones prepare family favorites. This approach cuts costs while making the event feel more personal and unique.
With careful planning and a little creativity, you can host a large family gathering with ease. DR

PLAN INCREDIBLE SMALL SHIP CRUISES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
These engaging voyages are perfect for multigenerational groups seeking to reunite and bond while exploring the world together

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection offers memorable Caribbean and Mediterranean itineraries on its luxury yacht, Evrima .
Cruise travel is expected to reach record-high volumes for the third consecutive year. AAA recently forecasted that 19 million Americans will go on ocean cruises this year. The Cruise Line Industry Association (CLIA) reports multigenerational cruises are very popular, with as many as five generations sailing together. According to industry sources, luxury cruising and small ship expedition voyages are booming as well.
Multiple cruise lines are experiencing a wave of multigenerational group bookings. Small ship cruises carrying fewer than 350 guests are ideal settings for multigenerational families seeking to forge treasured memories in enchanting settings around the globe. Reuniting on small ships gives families exceptional opportunities for group bonding in incredible destinations, including Alaska, the Hawaiian Islands, the Galápagos, Europe and the South Pacific. These transformational voyages offer flexibility, exclusivity, convenience and unforgettable experiences for all ages and interests.

WHY SMALL SHIP CRUISES APPEAL TO REUNITING FAMILIES
Small ship cruises offer big advantages for family groups. These voyages provide unique experiences, visiting smaller ports of call and hidden gems that large ships cannot reach. The focus of these cruises is on enrichment, nature and cultural engagement, immersing families in destinations through rich programming and onshore adventures.
SOME ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF SMALL SHIP CRUISING INCLUDE:
• Intimate settings provide a manageable, stress-free environment
• Exceptional personalized service and attention to detail
• All-inclusive cruise fares covering meals, excursions, activities and other amenities
• Expert guides and program leaders at your service
• Superb activities and enriching programs for all ages, interests and mobility levels
• Memorable experiences, including up-close wildlife encounters and cultural connections
• Flexible daily schedules with a wide variety of options
• Fewer guests, offering more time to reconnect for family bonding
• A vibrant community of passionately committed staff and well-traveled guests
8 FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING A SMALL SHIP CRUISE
There are multiple types of small ship cruises and itineraries. Multigenerational families can reunite on upscale expedition vessels, luxurious small cruise ships, world-class yachts and masted

sailing ships. Family groups should research, brainstorm and plan their dream vacation together to create the most memorable trip.
Here are some of the things to keep in mind when choosing a small ship cruise for a multigenerational vacation or family reunion:
1
Family interests, needs and travel goals. Multigenerational families should discuss who will be sailing with the group and their visions, desired activities and requirements for the trip. These conversations surface important expectations and opinions, helping families to select the best small ship. If the trip’s purpose is to celebrate a special birthday or anniversary, think about what’s needed to make the festivities particularly special.

2
Desired cruise itineraries. Determine when your group can travel and look for itineraries with ports of call and experiences that match family interests. Plan as far in advance as possible for the best choice of options and consider weather conditions. It’s helpful to seek out voyages that offer a balance of enrichment, relaxation and activities family members can enjoy onboard and ashore. Minimum age requirements may vary for specific cruise itineraries, departures and private charters.

3
Ship features. Small ships feature more intimate settings and fewer guests, making bonding easier for multigenerational groups. Families should consider each ship’s size, layout, and guest capacity to determine the impact on their comfort and overall vacation experience. Take the time to review staterooms and suites, dining options, public areas and onboard amenities. Room configurations, culinary choices, privacy and space are often high priorities. Keep family members’ desired activity levels, dietary restrictions and accessibility needs in mind as well.
4
Budget considerations. Small ship cruises are available at a variety of price points. It’s key for families to openly discuss budgets and determine what’s affordable. Sometimes, grandparents or others may be covering the entire cruise cost, or family members may be paying individually. Check with your travel advisor or cruise lines to see what group and family-oriented discounts are available. Pricing for specific itineraries, such as Alaska, may also be lower for departures outside the destination’s high season.

5
Activities, excursions and entertainment. Successful multigenerational vacations offer something for all ages, interests and mobility levels. Review each voyage’s opportunities for enrichment, excursions, onboard programming, wildlife encounters, and cultural immersion. Prioritize cruises with various options to keep everyone engaged and entertained. If family-focused programs and amenities are important to your group, check on those as well.
6
Service, staff and crew. Highly personalized service is one of the hallmarks of a five-star small ship cruise experience. Research each ship’s passenger-to-crew ratio and the quality of the expert-led programming. A top-notch cruise travel advisor and guest reviews can provide insights.
7
Fare inclusions. Some small ship cruises are entirely all-inclusive, covering meals, beverages, excursions, Wi-Fi, and more. This can make budgeting easier and reduce planning stress. Families should research each line’s fare inclusions and perks available for groups. Check whether guests can access free gear, such as kayaks, wetsuits and snorkeling equipment.
8
Exclusivity and customization. Small ships accommodate fewer guests, providing a more intimate feel. Multigenerational groups with special interests and families with younger children may wish to consider special sailings and departures with tailored onboard

communities. Full ship charters are ideal for family groups celebrating significant milestones, such as a big birthday or anniversary. These charters offer families the greatest opportunities for personalized attention and special requests, allowing groups to create the customized trip of a lifetime.
HOW TO BOOK A SMALL SHIP CRUISE
Multigenerational families can reserve small ship voyages with a travel advisor, wholesale travel seller or directly through cruise lines. An experienced cruise travel advisor can be an asset, providing professional insights to help families determine which cruise options best fit their group and expertly guiding them through the booking process.
Ecoventura’s luxury expedition yachts provide guests with an intimate environment featuring beautifully designed interiors inspired by the Galápagos Islands.
Family groups should book their cruises as far in advance as possible, particularly for full ship charters. It’s wise to reserve a family group cruise a year or more in advance for the best selection of itineraries, departures and staterooms. However, bookings may be possible three to six months in advance for smaller groups.
Some cruise lines suggest reserving full ship charters 12-24 months in advance, while others indicate most are booked 1824 months ahead of sailing. Deposits and final payment times vary depending on the cruise line and type of booking, and travel insurance is recommended.
Small ship cruise lines often offer specials for family groups. These may include complimentary berths for a certain number of guest bookings, per-person savings, discounts for children, and other perks.
