Message from the President
Ray Piwowarczyk
CMSC HAS A CLUB FOR EVERYONE
T
he Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council (CMSC) is an umbrella organization comprising 70 ski clubs that reach thousands of skiers in the Midwest. Its mission is to promote the excitement and camaraderie of skiing and snowboarding to everyone regardless of ability, age or economic background. CMSC member clubs hail from as far west as Nebraska and as far east as Ohio. Michigan and Wisconsin are on the north, Springfield and St. Louis on the south. The majority of CMSC clubs is concentrated in the Chicago metropolitan area. Run by energetic volunteers generous with their time and talent, the year-round social and ski activities of each club are limited only by their members’ imagination. CMSC has a ski club that will suit anyone’s lifestyle, whether a person is married or single, a single parent or married with children, over 21 or over 70, a novice or expert skier, is physically challenged, has an unlimited budget or is budget-minded, is active or just enjoys being around active people.

Formed in 1957 as a non-profit corporation, CMSC in its constitution provides for an annual election of officers. Each member ski club sends delegates to the Council’s meetings. CMSC’s magazine, Ski & Ride Club Guide, is published in the spring and fall. Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council is a charter member of the National Ski Council Federation representing over one-third of a million skiers in the United States. The ski clubs of CMSC and the CMSC trips committee do a great job putting together economical and fun-filled trips for its members. There is no guarantee that the conditions will be perfect or that you will not do a face plant or have a yard sale right below the lift with several of your friends riding above at the exact time. However, it can be guaranteed that the volunteers who spend the time and effort in planning an event really want you to have fun, meet new friends and have the opportunity to get away from the routine of work and home to relax, with all the logistics taken care of. All you need to do is arrange payment and show up for the bus/plane with your gear and follow the crowd. Just don’t follow them over double black diamond cliffs unless you really want to! MT. BACHELOR Celebrates Spring with Special Festivities
W
What’s up with the coupling of spring and spectacular? “Springtacular,” coined by Becky Kinney of Mt. Bachelor’s marketing team, captures what any West Coast snow enthusiast knows about the high desert climate of the Cascade Mountain Range—unmatched spring conditions include a deep snow base and sunny blue skies mixed with surprise powder days. Want stats? In May, when Mt. Bachelor’s season winds down, the average annual snowfall is 464 inches. On average in April you can anticipate nine powder days with an average snowfall of six inches per day.* Central Oregon is gifted with 300 days of sunshine a year. Andy Goggins, Mt. Bachelor’s marketing director, terms Springtacular as “the celebration of the world’s best spring season in Oregon’s central Cascades. With one of the longest seasons in North America, extending through Memorial Day weekend, Mt. Bachelor considers spring its premier season as a multi-sport vacation mecca. In the morning, ski and ride the highest resort peak in the Cascades, which offers the most spring terrain in the US; in the afternoon, pursue your next-favorite sport—mountain biking on over 1,000 miles of single track, fishing the Deschutes River, climbing Smith Rock, golfing at one of 30 area courses, or sampling craft beers from the 15 area breweries making Bend ‘Beer City USA.’ And shopping is tax-free.”
8 ❖ SKI & RIDE CLUB GUIDE
Mt. Bachelor spring operations offer over 2,000 acres of terrain accessed by three high-speed lifts with 360-degree skiing/riding from the summit in addition to all five Bachelor parks and a half-pipe. Lifts and lodges in the West Village base area open daily from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Northwest Ski Club Council (NWSCC) members keep their ski bags packed and in use well into late spring. NWSCC delights in stretching out its ski season with an annual Mt. Bachelor BLAST spring trip, a longstanding tradition. Linda McGavin, longtime NWSCC board member, remarked, "Mt. Bachelor has some of the finest spring skiing I have encountered in over 40 years of skiing. You start with an awesome 360-degree view from the summit, and you can ski down groomed runs or Cow's Face leading back to the summit chair, or head into the amazing steeps of the Cirque Bowl, or hit the backside for incredible runs down natural valleys of spring snow that seem to go on forever!" Last year marked the inaugural invitation for all National Ski Club members to join the Springtacular extravaganza. The NWSCC annual BLAST was combined with the Mt. Bachelor Springtacular events, thus the “Springtacular BLAST” was born. All National Ski Club members were offered discount lift tickets and lodging for Springtacular BLAST. Rates were honored a week prior to and a week 2012/2013 DIRECTORY ❖ www.skicmsc.com
after the event, which enabled members to customize their ski trip. Springtacular BLAST turned up the fun dial with a retro theme and guest appearances from freestyle ski legends Mike Dayton, Tracy Livingston, Dan Herby, Dan Schindler, Thom Brisson, Steve Youngerman and Bob Howard. NWSCC member Lynn Norbury exclaimed, “I watched all those legends on TV in the ’70s and ’80s and tried to copy their ballet skiing on 203-cm skis because they made it look so easy and so elegant. I couldn't believe they were still throwing their best tricks. Amazing. I'm coming again this year and might even have some short skis along to try something new. It was a blast to ski with them last year. We even did some zip-lining through bumps!"
mountain bike, road bike, kayak, paddleboard, rock-climbing gear, swim suit and hiking shoes. Or you can travel light and rent your equipment once you get there. It’s your turn to play in the NWSCC’s backyard and experience worldfamous spring conditions at the Mt. Bachelor Springtacular BLAST in Central Oregon. *Annual snowfall calculated by average over the last 10 years, April powder days and amount of snowfall per day calculated by an average over the last four years. ❄
This year, Mt. Bachelor and NWSCC are extending an invitation for all National Ski Club members to attend the second annual Springtacular BLAST. Lodging will be offered at the Four-Diamond Sunriver Resort. The Springtacular BLAST will be held Thursday through Sunday, April 25-28. Participants will be able to ski/ride in the morning and play their next-favorite sport in the afternoon. Sign up by contacting your favorite tour operator or call Mt. Bachelor at 541-693-0957. New this year, three days prior to the Springtacular BLAST, April 22-24, Mt. Bachelor will offer a FAM trip for qualified candidates. Participation is limited, so call Mt. Bachelor ASAP to get on the invite list. Last year’s theme holds true: “practice your backscratcher and pack your one-piece.” The freestyle legends look forward to throwing down the old school moves again and teaching you some of them. There will be a best retro outfit contest, an on-mountain BBQ, professional photos, and a live-music, footloose-style Springtacular BLAST Saturday night party. NWSCC member Stevie Viaene said, “The 2012 Bachelor Blast actually was a blast. We not only had the perfect weather to ski the entire mountain, including that awesome backside, but we also got to actually ski and hang out with the ‘legends’ - those famous guys from back in the day, and you know, they still have it going on! It was so much fun to roll out the old neon ski wear and get crazy. Oh, and did I forget to mention the after-party?” Mark your calendars, keep your ski and boards waxed, pack up your golf clubs, www.skicmsc.com ❖ 2012/2013 DIRECTORY
SKI & RIDE CLUB GUIDE ❖ 9
Destination Report: Europe
By Bill Gleason
It’s possible to set up an ambitious itinerary that allows ski groups to visit multiple resorts in the Dolomites, Italy’s craggy rooftop.
SKIING ACROSS THE
DOLOMITES
W
ith 12 main ski resorts (actually regions) each consisting of many ski areas all on one lift ticket, you would think that there would be an abundance of ski trip opportunities to be had in the Dolomites, the Eastern and Central Alps of Italy. However, it seems like every time a club runs a ski trip there, they go to only two resorts—Cortina or Selve-Wolkenstein in Val Gardena. Why? Maybe it's because they are the biggest and best known resorts in the area. But what about the other 10 resorts? The problem, it seems, is that the other resorts are perceived to be too small for one week of skiing, and that they are spread out all over the Dolomites and are not connected by lifts.
the Dolomites from one side to the other (Cortina to Obereggen), from resort to resort, and rifugio to rifugio (hut to hut), with small lightweight backpacks holding our clothes, toiletries and other necessities. Our luggage from the previous week's ski trip would be stored for the five days in Cortina and delivered to us in Obereggen at the end of our ski journey. From there, we would travel to Munich using a chartered shuttle taxi, spend the overnight at the Holiday Inn Express at the airport and fly home the next day. The reason I was able to consider such an ambitious program was that I knew the base core of skiers who would be going on the trip and their skiing ability. All were advanced skiers
I had been wanting to see and ski these other resorts for some time to know what they were like, and “because they were there.” I just didn't know how to do it. Last summer, when I was looking for ideas for a new ski trip for my club, I found a way to ski a number of these resorts on one trip. While discussing ideas with one of our tour operators, Ron Berlind of High Alpine Adventours, he mentioned to me a ski instructor and guide he had used for skiing around the SellaRonda area, Giorgio Peretti. Familiar with the entire Dolomiti area, he could set up a program, show us how to visit the resorts by bus and guide us around so we wouldn't get lost. I asked Ron to set up a five-day trip for our group, Fleetwind Ski Club, using Giorgio as a ski guide, and to arrange the route and accommodations. After several attempts at various plans, we settled on a very ambitious program to ski across 10 ❖ SKI & RIDE CLUB GUIDE

who had been to Europe on many previous trips and were used to skiing the very long ski runs there. We marketed this as a trip for advanced or strong intermediate skiers. Given the program we had, we could not afford to be waiting for anyone lagging behind. The plan worked perfectly. We were able to see and ski seven of the 12 resorts, three of them entirely new to us. Mr. Peretti saw to it that we skied just about all of the ski runs in each of these new resorts. We also learned more about how to get around the Dolomites and connect to the other five resorts that we had not skied. The ski resorts and the skiing were good, the scenery was spectacular, the rifugios were very nice (with modern bathrooms), and the breakfasts and dinners that were included with the rifugios were excellent. Giorgio was great. One advantage of staying in a rifugio on the top of a mountain (besides the beautiful sunsets) is that you get to make the first run down the mountain in the morning, if you leave early enough. The only thing that did not go as planned was that we were not able to ski on two off-pistes routes that were planned for two separate days due to the lack of snow on those particular routes. The snow on the marked pistes in every resort was in very good condition because of the extensive snowmaking and excellent grooming. Please note that you don't have to be an expert or advanced skier to do this type of trip. It can be tailor-made to fit the groups’ ability and ambition, from a few short connections and a couple of resorts to many connections and many resorts. For example, you could connect Cortina with the Civetta area, Cortina with the SellaRonda area or the Sella-Ronda area with the Civetta area, with three days in each resort, thereby lessening the moving around and allowing more time to ski each area. Or you could connect Cortina, Civetta and the Sella-Ronda areas with two days in each resort; or you could connect........the possibilities are many. All you need is a group of people who get along with each other, are willing to move around from place to place with a minimum amount of clothes and are looking for an adventure. ❄ www.skicmsc.com ❖ 2012/2013 DIRECTORY

The Madonna ski area boasts 57 lifts and 93 miles of ski runs.
CMSC’S TRIP TO
MADONNA DI CAMPIGLIO
O
On January 21, 47 members from 16 CMSC clubs departed Chicago for Madonna di Campiglio, Italy. We tried a Saturday departure this year. This helped several in our group, eliminating the need to take an extra vacation day on Friday. We arrived at the Hotel St. Raphael and found a beautiful hotel with Old World charm, located near one of the lifts. Snow conditions were a concern because Madonna di Campiglio hadn’t seen much snowfall for a long time. But we quickly found that they kept the runs beautifully covered. They not only had state-of-the-art snowmaking and grooming equipment, but their expertise with both exceeded our expectations. The interconnected ski areas completely surround the picturesque town. From the Pradalago ski lift outside our dining room window we were able to ski all areas and return home without ever having to take a bus. You can also choose to use the ski shuttle to start your day at the far end of the ski area or have it pick you up at the end of the day and bring you home. The mountains were sprinkled with huts that provided everything from cafeteria service to fine dining. The last run of the

day found groups of CMSCers at mountain huts enjoying an end of day beer, wine or a Bombardino – a warm drink made from egg liquor and rum. Many did day trips to Verona and Pinzolo as well as snowshoeing and ice skating. They also used the hotel pool, hot tub and spa. After dinner several groups would stroll thru town, sometimes for the nightlife, sometimes just for the mountain air and the picturesque town. Our hotel also provided live music several nights. After a week in Madonna di Campiglio, 26 of us continued on to Venice. The three-day extension was perfect. Most of us bought the 48-hour boat pass allowing us access to the canal ferries across Venice as well as the nearby islands. We broke into groups for the boat trip on the Grand Canal and toured the Basilica de San Marco, Doge’s Palace, Rialto Bridge, Piazza San Marco and more. Hot chocolate hit the spot at Harry’s Bar. We visited the islands of Murano for its glass, Cimitero for its interesting cemetery and Burano for its lace. We plan to ski St. Anton, Austria with an extension to Vienna in January 2013. To join us, see our website at www.skicmsc.com, click on CMSC Events; or call Randy Baustert at 847-622-3968. ❄ 2012/2013 DIRECTORY ❖ www.skicmsc.com
Destination Report: Midwest
MICHIGAN’S
MARQUETTE MOUNTAIN
I
By Vanessa Day
In one of the farthest regions to the north, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, sits Marquette Mountain, a popular winter sports destination for skiers and boarders from all over the Midwest. Opened in 1957, Marquette Mountain—called Cliffs Ridge at the time—quickly became a hotspot for winter sports advocates, and it maintains that image to this day. The city of Marquette, Michigan, and the region surrounding it, is a well-known ski town with avid athletes who live by the local motto “Don’t hibernate, participate.” Marquette Mountain is their playground. Located just two miles south of the city on County Road 553, the ski hill is a true gem nestled close to the banks of Lake Superior, which is visible to the north and northeast from the top of the mountain. Marquette Mountain offers skiers and boarders a wide range of terrains to enjoy. No matter what skill level a person is at, the mountain provides something for everyone, with easy, moderate and difficult runs to satisfy the beginner and the expert. With a top elevation of 1,357 feet and a vertical of 600 feet, it is one of the Midwest’s highest mountains and one of the most challenging in both Michigan and Wisconsin. It features 25 runs, three chairlifts and one paddle tow, 169 skiable acres and an average of 135 ski days per season— not to mention over 200 inches of snowfall annually. For those looking to practice their ski jumps and boarding tricks, Marquette Mountain provides three terrain parks with hits, rails and trails for all skill levels. In the coming season, Marquette Mountain expands its backcountry runs, adding seven new trailheads.
The resort offers runs that appeal to skiers and boarders of all abilities.
One of the most appealing aspects of Marquette Mountain is its accessibility, not just in terms of location but also in terms of instruction. Many visitors to the mountain have never skied or snowboarded before, or are still learning the ins and outs of the sport. Marquette Mountain offers private ski and snowboard lessons for any age and ability, Monday through Thursday from noon to 3 p.m., and Friday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Lessons cost $30 per hour; $20 for an extra student or extra hour.) Group lessons are available for $10 per person at 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. Friday through Sunday. The mountain also features ski schools for kids of all ages, a convenient resource for parents who want to enjoy the slopes while their children learn the basics of skiing and riding. On top of its elite skiing and boarding options, Marquette Mountain hosts a number of events year round to keep people entertained both on and off the slopes. A number of clubs, including Marquette’s own race program, hold alpine race events at the mountain, as well as NASTAR competitions. This year, Marquette Mountain added a few more events, including two rail jams under nightclub-style dance lights— similar to what is done at the X-Games—and a Snow Days fall festival taking place on Nov. 10.
The mountain caters to the local community as well as families and even business travelers. Its diverse terrain is ideal for the students attending Northern Michigan University who can hop over to enjoy a few runs between classes; or for families who appreciate its convenience and make weekly or even daily trips to the slopes; or for those who only have a couple hours to spare after work or during a business trip to Marquette who would like to take part in some night skiing. 14 ❖ SKI & RIDE CLUB GUIDE
2012/2013 DIRECTORY ❖ www.skicmsc.com
Another reason for the mountain’s success is its affordable prices. The cost of lift tickets, lessons, lodging and food is all family-friendly, making it easy for groups to take frequent ski trips to Marquette. While there is no lodging on site, there are plenty of nearby accommodations located about two miles away. As far as food, Marquette Mountain has three options for a quick lunch or a après-ski drink: The White Water Cafe, which is now offering a full sit-down expanded menu; the T Bar, which serves up daily drink specials; and the Back Door fire pit, located halfway down Snowfield trail. Marquette Mountain’s amenities make it a true oasis, a refuge for locals and those visiting from larger metro areas. Perhaps it’s the diverse terrain, or the large quantities of snow, or the welcoming environment, or a combination that keeps people coming back every year. No matter what the reason, skiers and boarders alike have found a home at Marquette Mountain. (marquettemountain.com) ❄

CLUB
PROFILES CMSC clubs are spread across the Midwest and appeal to winter sports enthusiasts of all stripes. Clubs sponsor weekend and longer trips to ski destinations in the United States, Canada and Europe, plus year-round social and recreational activities that range from campouts and bike hikes to fish boils and theater nights. This alphabetical sampling of member clubs provides a peek into the fun that awaits skiers and non-skiers alike. Details can be found on the clubs’ websites.
American Blind Skiing Foundation
Springfield Ski Club
American Blind Skiing Foundation Established in 1971, the American Blind Skiing Foundation enables blind and visually impaired individuals to downhill ski and snowboard in a safe and friendly environment. Our experienced guides and certified instructors are prepared to teach those new to the sport as well as enhance the skills, or simply guide those already familiar with it. As a guide, the reward of enabling someone to engage in a sport you are passionate about is amazing. For those who thought they would never ski again or those who have always wanted to try, it is a thrilling achievement. (absf.org)
Champaign Ski and Adventure Club
Battle Creek Ski Club Battle Creek Ski Club is an all-year activity club with emphasis on skiing and boarding. We have members of all age ranges and everyone is welcome. To attend a ski trip you must be an active member with dues paid. Summer activities are open to anyone. We celebrate the beginning of the season with an Uprising Party which always has a theme.
