ON MY MIND
By Jeffrey Gayduk
The Legacy We Leave M
y dad was a huge car guy. From the day I could walk he would take me to antique car shows where he would provide running narrative of the autos on display, like how you could tell the difference between the front grills on the 1950 Packards and other assorted minutia about these classics. My dad was a living, breathing Wikipedia of all things classic auto. As a youngster I would much rather be spending my Sunday mornings on a baseball field than with a bologna sandwich at the car show, but he who holds the keys determines the day’s plans. Up at 5 a.m., scrunched in the front seat of his truck, we would rumble down the road as he recounted stories of the cars he owned, refurbished and sold over the years. Admittedly, much of this was lost on me as I didn't inherit his same passion for motorized vehicles. I could recite the starting lineup of every major league baseball team in 1978, but I couldn't tell the difference between a Hudson and a Humpmobile. But somewhere in the gray matter a few stories stuck, in particular the one about the car that got away, his 1910 Model T. He bought this car in 1938 at the age of 18. Times were tough, the nation was scrapping back from the Great Depression and heading towards WWII. How a high school dropout “grease monkey” managed to land one of the first Model Ts ever built I don’t know, but this car was his pride and joy. John Gayduk held on to that car for 28 years. In its heyday it was featured in parades and escorted celebrities and his younger brother Chester and his bride on their wedding day. War, marriage, business failure and two kids left it in less than showroom condition and dad parted with the T in 1966. That was the last anyone in this family saw of it until March 4, 2016.

STRANGE TURN I was in Arizona on a business trip when my office called with an odd message. “A guy by the name of Joe Carroway called. He believes he owns a car that belonged to one of your relatives.” I called him back and turns out he recently purchased a 1910 Model T. Tracing the lineage of this classic auto, he tracked me down through a 1972 magazine article of all things, where it listed my dad as the previous owner. Thanks to a rather unusual last name and Google, I’m not hard to find. And as fate would have it, he lived in Scottsdale, Arizona. As quick as we could, we made a U-turn on the highway and headed out to legitimize this story. There it was...dad’s car. Everything I remembered from old photos. Everything he represented… Restored to original showroom condition. How ironic that it was housed in an auto repair shop, where dad toiled for over a half decade. The new owner has grand visions for the auto. Climate-controlled storage, car shows and impeccable upkeep. Eventually this car will end up on a museum show floor. Think about this. My dad, who spent his entire life in love with vintage automobiles, will have his first car on display for people to gawk at. Quite a legacy to leave behind. Maybe one of the magazines I create will somehow end up in the publisher’s hall of fame. Perhaps the tours you craft will create lifelong memories for your customers, passed on to future generations. We can only work towards those goals, but I’m grateful that after all these years, I’m learning new lessons from my dad. LGT

Your Trips Should Reflect Your Personal Touch W
hen I was nine years old my father died suddenly. My widowed mother decided to take her two young daughters to warmer climes for the winter and thus we began a series of cold-weather escape trips. The day we departed on our first such trip, aunts, uncles and cousins saw us off at the train station with much ado - a flower corsage for each of us travelers, a huge basket of snacks and goodies to enjoy en route, farewell speeches and songs. You would have thought we were going to the moon, not just to Florida. But the excitement of that departure day and the preparation days leading up to it have remained in my memory always. We were going AWAY! We were planning how many bathing suits we'd need on this warm, 10

wonderful trip. We had packed and repacked our luggage a thousand times and told our neighbors and schoolmates of what awaited us. Now, as I look back on this first of many trips, each one farther and farther from home, I realize in retrospect that the anticipation was the best part of the trip. Today, in this same way, although your tour members are not children, they still may harbor the same childish excitement about an upcoming trip. In fact, the anticipation and preparation may very well be the best part. So what can you do as a tour operator to fulfill this unspoken but necessary role? Do not assume that once they have enrolled on your trip and submitted their deposit, they are yours - that they don't need your ongoing
attention, your recognition, your rah-rah to keep them excited. After all, they could always cancel their trip membership if something else came along to which they suddenly might take a fancy. Plan in advance for a series of contacts with all those enrolled. Your first contact might be something as simple as a welcome letter, personalized. A second contact a month or so later could be some news maybe that you've added a special tour feature, perhaps that the trip is filling up, and so on down the line 'til pre-departure. You could be sending them some suggestions for appropriate clothes and packing lists. You might remind them of things they might want to schedule before the trip like medical or dental check-ups. And you might want to make several reading suggestions about the places and people of the areas you'll be visiting. I find it particularly well received to tell them what they can shop for - what the area is particularly noted for. I have tea pots from London, colorful table linens from Patzcuaro, Mexico and my most favorite of all: soft, comfortable leather shoes from Italy that last forever. Many cruise lines and major tour operators are no longer preparing attractive departure packets. Some are simply telling their travelers to print out their own departure documents from their website. If the trip is such a do-ityourself affair, where's the glamour? The excitement? You, as their trip coordinator and leader, can obtain their final documents and package them attractively with a personal departure letter. Perhaps you'll want to include such things as a map of the area you'll visit, perhaps a "My Trip" notebook and pen, a list of the group members and some surprise enclosures you feel appropriate. Now they feel they're really going! And they're going with you - this wonderful person who is looking out for them all along the journey with your extra touch. Armir Harris, Shofur
Shofuring in a new model of charter bus reservations
W
e’re in the midst of a transportation revolution with companies like Uber destabilizing business models that have thrived for over a century. Shofur aims to do the same with the bus industry. With smart technology and a passion for the industry, Armir Harris, president of Shofur, is setting his sights on leveling the playing field for small bus companies. Learn how in this edition of Take 5.
Armir Harris, president of Shofur, has brought bus reservations logistics to a new level.

I
April 2016
Leisure Group Travel: How did you get started in the transportation business? Armir Harris: I moved to the U.S. as a youth as a political refugee. My uncle had a cab, limousine and party bus business and I started working for him at the age of 15. He couldn’t speak English well, so I was translating a lot of his paperwork and helping him manage his operations. I got to know the business out of necessity. LGT: How did this transition to Shofur? AH: I went away to school, studied at Boston University and UCLA but my uncle got pretty sick so I went back home at the age of 22 to help him out. In 2012, the Democratic National Convention came to Charlotte. They called and asked me, “Can you get us 60 buses?” Local bus companies were sold out, so I started calling bus companies around North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina, and I aggregated these bus companies to bring them into Charlotte for the DNC Convention. That’s when I realized there really isn’t a platform that aggregates all these bus companies. Shortly after I started Shofur. LGT: How did it transition to a technology company? AH: We fulfill the technology gap many bus companies have in managing their fleet reservations by sending them an API which allows them to manage all their reservations online. This allows us to aggregate availability of bus companies in real time. We can track their locations, quality control and make sure that the bus companies are insured. LGT: How are you simplifying the process of making bus reservations? AH: Historically there was a lot of friction. You would call a bus company and they would tell you to send them an email with all your information. The next day they’d send you a quote. You would send them a confirmation if you wanted to book. They would send you a contract you had to fill out and send back to them. We have simplified that process so what would have taken eight steps and probably two or three days, we’ve condensed into about three minutes. You call our 1-800 >> LeisureGroupTravel.com

number, provide a pickup address, drop-off address, times, dates, passenger counts. Within seconds our system checks availability and pricing. We send you a quote while you’re on the phone which is also your reservation form. It’s just like booking an airline ticket. LGT: What groups do you work with? AH: Airlines love us because when their planes cannot fly, they can call us at 2:00 a.m. and we’re pretty much the only service that can get them buses. Amtrak has been one of our good clients. We work with a lot of universities. We’ve done big sporting events like NCAA championships. We work with a lot of churches and large conventions. LGT: What are you doing to find clients? AH: We do a lot of email marketing. After our clients we book, we make sure that we stay in touch with them. So right now it’s more email marketing and word of mouth. Let’s say the football team books with us, they love the service, they tell their basketball team and then they tell their hockey team and so on. LGT: You work with over 300 bus companies. How are you vetting them? AH: That’s actually a huge issue. We make sure that bus companies are insured. We screen them and we also check their history. We call references. We go on site and see the buses and if we’re not able to do that we make sure that they send us pictures. We check the mileage, we check the mechanics records. We have a whole compliance department. LGT: What’s next for Shofur? AH: The next line of business that we’ve been working on is line runs. We’ve realized that a lot of these bus companies, especially LeisureGroupTravel.com <<

mom and pop companies, have amazing buses and they really care about their clients. Unfortunately, they just don’t have the business. Our data has shown that a lot of these bus companies stay idle, especially during the weekdays. We are building the technology to launch line runs on the Northeast coast and in California, Texas and the Southeast. Through our app, customers will be able to see the bus in real time, they’ll be able to select the seat that they want and they’ll know who they’re sitting next to. They’ll be able to see ratings on the bus company, they’ll be able to see ratings on the driver, as well as amenities like Wi-Fi, luggage space, lavatories, wheelchair accessibility, outlets, etc.
LGT: How will your line runs be different from the existing platforms? AH: There are two dominant players in the line run business right now, but there’s not a lot of transparency. You might be waiting curbside for a bus to pick you up. The bus may be late. The bus may be broken on the side of the road and you don’t know. It’s not transparent. What we’re going to provide is a lot more efficiency and transparency. LGT: What has been the reaction from small bus companies? AH: They’re happy to be partnering with us because we’ll be able to keep them busy and they’ll also have consistent revenue streams. It’s going to bring the mom and pop shops on a level playing field, they’re going to have an opportunity to compete with the big players. LGT

2016 Travel South Domestic Showcase Receives High Marks Winston-Salem hosts a conference that continues to be a favorite with travel planners and suppliers By Dave Bodle
T
here’s a lot to like about Travel South Showcase. Travel planners will find representatives from 12 Southern state DMOs and their partner DMOs and suppliers. Southern suppliers meet with travel planners who are already vetted for their interest in the South. Journalists find that Showcase provides a wealth of story ideas. This year’s Domestic Showcase hosted by Winston-Salem and Visit North Carolina continued Travel South USA’s reputation as a superior regional marketplace. The last visit to North Carolina was in 1999 when Greensboro was the host city. It was great to be back in North Carolina. Many delegates began the week with Pre-Showcase FAMs. Six FAMs, three for journalists and three for travel planners, 14

departed from Winston-Salem March 3 to set the stage for the North Carolina experience. The “Soundtracks & Sidetracks” theme piqued my interest and we were off to the mountains. Mount Airy, Wilkesboro, North Wilkesboro and Shelby, North Carolina have a wealth of options for group travel planners. The area’s music tradition is a highlight, from the unique sound of Surry County old-time music and the Earle Theater to the Don Gibson Theatre in his hometown of Shelby. Not to be missed is the Earl Scruggs Center dedicated to the legendary banjo player credited with the bluegrass music sound. For 75,000 attendees, Merlefest in Wilkesboro is a music festival favorite. The area is part of the Yadkin Valley American Viticultural Area, and stops at Old North State Winery and Raffaldini Vineyards are well worth the time. In the Wilkesboro
and North Wilkesboro area they’ve been making moonshine since before Prohibition. Call Family Distillers and Copper Barrel carry on the tradition of being the best. Local museums show off hometown heroes, but also give a real insight into the history and culture of the area. The Andy Griffith Museum and Siamese Twins Exhibit in Mount Airy is scheduled for renovation and plans to be open by the Mayberry Days festival in late September. The Mount Airy Regional History Museum and Wilkes Heritage Museum should be on every itinerary. Mississippi’s Music Trails Many will concede that the blues was the most important source of popular, modern music. Fewer will disagree that Mississippi was the birthplace of the blues. From Jackson to Indianola to Clarksdale to Merigold, groups still find live blues being played regularly at dozens of venues on the Mississippi Blues Trail. Although the history of country music covers the entire state on the Mississippi Country Music Trail, look to the casinos in Biloxi and Tunica for a full calendar of performances from some of the biggest names in the business. GREAT HISTORIC SOUTHERN THEATERS
Having stood the test of time, these glorious venues are still welcoming groups to their magnificent halls
Ryman Auditorium
Grand Opera House
Ryman Auditorium Nashville, Tennessee
Grand Opera House Macon, Georgia
Born from the inspiration found in the words of evangelist Reverend Sam Jones, Thomas G. Ryman’s Union Gospel Tabernacle was opened in 1892. After his death it became known as the Ryman Auditorium. As the “Carnegie Hall of the South,” it attracted most of the legendary entertainers of the time. From 1943-1974 the Grand Ole Opry broadcast live and the Ryman became synonymous with country music. Today, this National Historic Landmark is hosting world-class entertainers from all music styles. Plan your visit to include a tour of this fabulous showplace. (ryman.com/group-sales)
Lovingly referred to as the “Grand Old Lady of Mulberry Street,” the Grand Opera House opened in 1884 as the Academy of Music, boasting the largest stage in the Southeast. Through the years it was a regular on the Southern tours of major vaudeville, burlesque, musical comedy and drama performances. Like so many theaters, the Grand was turned into a movie house. The community came together, and with the assistance of Mercer College it reopened in 1970 with a gala. Proceeds went to restoration. Today, a Broadway Series and other perfiormances grace the stage. (thegrandmacon.com)
Barter Theatre
The Orpheum, New Orleans, Louisiana
Performing for produce. That was the idea Robert Porterfield had when his Barter Theatre opened in 1933. In those early days the actors were often distracted by the sounds of pigs and chickens and noise from the jail located under the stage. From those tenuous beginnings the Barter Theatre over the years has welcomed numerous actors that performed here before gaining prominence. The Barter Theatre and Barter II have a full schedule of performances from February through Christmas holiday performances. The State Theatre of Virginia website is bartertheatre.com.
In 2005 when Katrina struck, the lower levels of The Orpheum were flooded. The classic theater sat dormant in the heart of the New Orleans business district for 10 years. By late 2015 the stunning historical structure had been renovated and restored, surpassing the original 1918 structure. State-of-the-art audio and lighting systems have been added, while the original color scheme has been maintained. The terra cotta ceilings and plasterwork were restored by hand. The Orpheum enters 2016 with a full schedule of Broadway and other shows. The 2016/2017 schedule promises even more of an Orpheum entertainment experience. (orpheumnola.com)

Branson’s theaters offer live shows from morning to night.
Tennessee Border to Border Regardless of the route you follow into Tennessee, there’s great music to be heard. The Memphis Blues and Beale Street are legendary, but the medley isn’t complete without names like Sun Studios, Graceland and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. Nashville deserves the title “Music City,” and though its foundation is certainly in country music, it has become a hub for virtually every musical style. Live performances are a daily event at more than 150 venues. With the background of the Smoky Mountains, Sevierville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg welcomes millions of visitors annually to their live entertainment venues and attractions. With more than 30 shows between Dollywood and two dozen theaters, there’s reason why this has become a popular tour destination. (tnvacation.com/music-arts) Sacred Harp Music in Alabama You’re probably familiar with most of the music forms that have their roots in the South. Although not truly Southern, the old fashioned, a cappella style called Sacred Harp was widely popular pre-Civil War. Singings continue the tradition at Henagar Liberty Baptist Church in Sand Mountain and nearby Antioch Church. The singings at the former typically begin mid-morning Saturday and continue through the afternoon. Breaks are taken and you can come and go as you please. The Sound of Sacred Harp Music is Alabama Road Trip No. 36. Find all the details at alabama.travel/road-trips/henagar-the-sound-ofsacred-harp-music Branson, Missouri. Need We Say More? In the early ‘90s the CBS program 60 Minutes in a very favorable segment introduced its audience to Branson, dubbing it a “Country Music Mecca.” Since that segment the Branson/Lakes Area has grown significantly, welcomed millions of visitors and greatly expanded its live entertainment options. Country music continues its popularity along with other music styles, magic, animal acts, acrobats, comedy and outdoor drama. More than 50 shows are available with another half-dozen on stage at Silver Dollar City theme park. (explorebranson.com) LGT 22

PARAMOUNT ACHIEVEMENT A renovated movie house in Northern Illinois offers world-class theater fare
“
S
eeing a performance from these seats is really spectacular and just like it was in 1931,” says Jim Jarvis. He’s the vice president of sales and marketing for the Paramount Theatre in Aurora, Illinois, and he’s proudly showcasing the newly renovated space that’s welcomed Broadway casts, Hollywood royalty and rock stars. The theater has been refurbished to reflect its earlier heyday, and thanks to local funding and an effort to revitalize the downtown area, the Paramount now rivals Chicago’s theaters for variety and quality, and beats them for price. When opened in 1931, the space was intended to be the premier movie palace in the Midwest for film studio Paramount Pictures, which spared no expense on construction. A blend of Art Deco architecture and Italian interior design, the lush theater welcomed movie stars of the day such as Claudette Colbert and Janet Gaynor and became a hub for glamor outside of Chicago. Traveling vaudeville shows and musical performances were added to combat the Great Depression, but eventually the theater fell into neglect by the 1960s. However, by the turn of the 21st century private investors and
38
I

public officials brought the space back to its former glory, restoring the eight hand-painted murals and the original ticket booth. The investment has been worthwhile; last season the Paramount welcomed over 300,000 visitors. For out-of-state showgoers and suburban residents, the Paramount provides a complete theater experience without Chicago’s high-priced parking, expensive restaurants and unpredictable travel. “It’s a complete experience,” says Jarvis. “Here you can park at a reasonable price, enjoy dinner blocks away from the show, and enjoy appetizers and drinks in our lobby.” Upcoming shows include a run of West Side Story and Charlotte’s Web, and pop stars Donny and Marie Osmond perform for a week in late May. Film buffs will love Mondays, where every week widescreen classics such as Titanic and
Raiders of the Lost Ark are displayed on the Paramount’s multistory screen. Best of all, the theater is welcoming to groups, with discounts for parties of more than 10. “We’ve worked hard to assure there’s programming that appeals to everybody, and we’re proud of what we offer to groups and locals alike,” says Jarvis. Sparkling spring openings, coupled with long-running
s warmer weather hits the streets of little old New York, the Broadway theater scene promises to be red-hot. From big-name musicals to thought-provoking plays, groups have nearly 40 choices this season on the Great White Way. Broadway is booming. Nearly 13 million people saw a show last year, and 2016 got off to a brisk start as Broadway set an attendance record the week ending Jan. 3, with the highest weekly grosses in its history. Tourists comprise two-thirds of the Broadway audience, and who doesn’t want to see a show when they’re in town? Seasonal attendance for Broadway performances tops that of all 40

10 New York and New Jersey professional sports teams combined. How far in advance should groups book? Stephanie Lee, president and co-owner of Broadway.com, a one-stop shop for all things Broadway, says, “Group tickets are generally booked three to six months in advance for the best discounts and availability. However, groups often have exclusive advance access for new musicals and plays prior to the public sale period; savvy group buyers take advantage of deeper discounts during this period. And there are almost always deeper discounts for performances in the fall months of September and October and winter months of January and February.”
Asked about new shows he is most excited about, Lee started with Shuffle Along, a vintage musical being revived for today’s audiences. With an infectious jazz score, exuberant dancing and “one of the starriest casts in recent history,” she says, “Shuffle Along is sure to impress.” One of the first hit Broadway shows written and directed by African-Americans when it debuted in 1921, Shuffle Along stars five Tony Award nominees (including two winners)—Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Billy Porter, Victor Dixon and Joshua Henry—and features original choreography from the legendary Savion Glover. South in the 1920s and ‘40s, the tale of love and redemption revolves around successful literary editor Alice Murphy and a young soldier just home from World War II. Their connection inspires Alice to confront a shocking incident from her past. “If you are looking for the perfect show for a wide range of audience members,” Lee says, “look no further than Tuck Everlasting, based on the beloved bestseller and directed by Casey Nicolaw (Aladdin, The Book of Mormon).” The musical about love, family and living life to the fullest centers around a young girl who discovers the magical secret of the Tucks, a family that has gained eternal life by drinking from a spring that flows from
a tree in the woods. Disney’s Aladdin, now in its third year, is another family favorite and one of Broadway’s highest-grossing shows week after week. Based on the 1992 Disney animated film, Aladdin has played to more than a million at the New Amsterdam Theater. The hottest ticket on Broadway these days, though, is Hamilton, a hip-hop-infused phenomenon about one of America’s founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton. A regular sellout, it won Best Musical Theater Album at the Grammys. Oscar and Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson, in her Broadway debut as the sultry Shug Avery, brings star power to The Color April 2016

Epic attractions and other fresh discoveries await groups in Manhattan and beyond
Purple, a joyous musical with a soul-raising score of jazz, gospel, ragtime and blues. For something with a Latin beat, consider On Your Feet!, based on the life of Emilio and Gloria Estefan. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock, a new musical adapted from the 2003 movie starring Jack Black, features a kids’ rock band belting out 14 new songs as well as original songs from the film. Cirque du Soleil makes its Broadway debut with Paramour, which runs from April 16 to Dec. 25, 2016 at the Lyric Theatre. The internationally renowned troupe blends eye-popping acrobatics with sumptuous music and dance, all set around a love triangle in the glamorous world of Golden Age Hollywood. Some groups may be attracted to Nerds, the Musical Comedy, a story that plugs into the epic rivalry between titans of tech Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. It’s an irreverent celebration of the tech we love, hate and ultimately can’t do without. If you don’t want to take a chance on a new arrival, rest assured there are plenty of truedand-true productions with broad appeal. Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera is the longestrunning show in Broadway history and has been entertaining audiences since 1988. Other standbys showing no signs of slowing down include Chicago (1996), The Lion King (1997), Wicked (2003), Jersey Boys (2005) and The Book of Mormon (2011). A revival of Lloyd Webber’s Cats, which ranks third on the all-time longevity list, opens July 14. Les Miserables, at No. 6 all-time, closed in 2003 after a 16-year run, but a revival has been packing them into the Imperial Theatre since March 2014. A fresh new production of Fiddler on the Roof, another beloved Broadway tradition, has been playing since December 2015. The King and I, winner of the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival, has been lighting up the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater for more than a year. Hello Dolly, this time starring Bette Midler, returns to Broadway on March 13, 2017. Whether your group wants to see an old favorite or the latest smash hit, there’s a show for them in midtown Manhattan, the very heart of America’s theater scene. The New Face of NYC Empire Outlets, New York City’s only outlet center, will debut in November 2017 in St. George, an emerging entertainment district on the Staten Island waterfront. Right at the base of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, the 1.1 million square feet of retail space will include about 100 shops and an extensive array of waterfront food and beverage concepts, plus a boutique hotel. St. George also will be the location of the New York Wheel, which will be the tallest observation wheel in the country and, for a while at least, in the world. At 200 feet taller than the London Eye, it will offer panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline and New York Harbor. Set to open in early 2017, the 630-foot-tall observation wheel will accommodate 1,440 people on the 38-minute ride, with 40 passengers in each of the 36 glass pods. Staten Island saw two museum openings last summer—the Staten Island Museum at Snug Harbor and National
Lighthouse Museum. Other newly opened museums in New York include the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, formerly known as the Ellis Island Museum; and Whitney Museum of American Art in lower Manhattan’s vibrant Meatpacking District. The Whitney’s new nine-story building, designed by Renzo Piano and situated on Gansevoort Street between the High Line and Hudson River, provides space for the first comprehensive view of its unsurpassed collection of modern and contemporary American art. Celebrity chefs have their eye on the Meatpacking District, with Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich soon opening La Sirena, their first new restaurant in years. Chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain will open Bourdain Market at Pier 57 on 15th Street (at the Hudson River). The market will include about 100 retail and wholesale food vendors, plus prepared-food stalls and at least one restaurant. LGT
New England Aquarium, Boston The New England Aquarium, a global leader in saving endangered turtles, debuts a new exhibit dedicated to giving guests experience with diagnosing, treating and rehabilitating turtles. In addition to turtles, the aquarium has a Giant Ocean Tank, which simulates a Caribbean reef where you will find sharks, turtles, stingrays, eels and barracudas. Your group can visit Myrtle, the resident 80-year-old sea turtle who has lived here since 1970. Get hands-on at the touch tank where you can gently touch rays and sharks. (neaq.org)
Mystic Aquarium, Mystic, Connecticut At Mystic Aquarium your group will meet New England’s only beluga whales. in a whole new way. The ocean is an environment unlike anything we experience on land, home to some creatures that seem as if they could come from another planet. Since most humans lack the capacity—or the equipment—to breathe underwater, the sea remains somewhat of a mystery, a vast expanse so large it’s hard to comprehend. After all, the city on the Thames was the home of William Shakespeare, the greatest English playwright of all time, and today this hotbed of creativity, glitz and glamour is considered the cultural capital of Europe. At any one time the choice includes more than 200 offerings, from serious plays to splashy musicals. London’s West End theater district, accented with bright marquees and alive with trendsetting cafes and restaurants, is a magnet 50

for tourists. Long-running favorites like The Phantom of the Opera and Disney’s The Lion King pack visitor appeal, as does the ever-changing crop of new shows that energize the London theater scene. Across the Thames, on the South Bank, popular venues include Shakespeare’s Globe, an authentic reconstruction of the open-air theater where the Bard’s dramas and comedies enthralled Elizabethan audiences. For Shakespeare fans, this is the perfect year to be in London, as the city observes the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death with special programs, displays and events. Plays at Shakespeare’s Globe are limited to the
warmer months, with the upcoming “Wonder Season” featuring Midsummer’s Night Dream, April 30-Sept. 11; The Taming of the Shrew, May 13-Aug. 6; MacBeth, June 18-Oct. 1; Imogen (a re-framing of Cymbeline), Sept. 17-Oct. 16; and Merchant of Venice, Oct. 415. Seating in the Globe’s three levels of galleries is on wooden benches, while “groundlings” stand on a carpet of hazelnut shells and cinder. Tours of the half-timbered, thatched-roof theater are available, and there’s an excellent museum with artifacts, videos and touch screens. Visions of the Arabian Nights will enchant Prince Edward Theatre audiences when the lavish Disney musical Aladdin starts May 27. Shakespeare’s Globe offers a genuine Elizabethan experience.
Shaftesbury Avenue, close to the Leicester Square Tube stop—go for the best-known musicals. As on Broadway in New York, movie and TV actors often lend their star power. Most shows are nightly except Sunday, with two or three matinees a week. The Phantom of the Opera, with jaw-dropping scenery and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mesmerizing score, is now in its 30th year at Her Majesty’s Theatre, still going strong after more than 12,000 performances. The Lion King has been playing the Lyceum Theatre since 1999. Other reliable crowdpleasers include Wicked, Mamma Mia!, Les Miserables, Jersey Boys, The Book of Mormon and Matilda. Besides The Lion King, Disney fans can see Aladdin, a New York winner that makes its West End premiere on May 27 at the Prince Edward Theatre. Broadway’s successful Beautiful: The Carole King Musical just celebrated its first anniversary at London’s Aldwych Theatre and has been extended to February 2017. Lloyd Webber’s next blockbuster will be School of Rock, a Broadway smash that will make its UK premiere at the London Palladium in 2017. A stage adaptation of the Jack Black movie about a wannabe rock star who becomes a teacher at a posh school, the show is now in search of a cast of 39 child performers who will sing, dance and play instruments as the musical’s talented school class. Dreamgirls, another Broadway musical making its UK premiere, opens in November at the Savoy Theatre and will star American actress and singer Amber Riley, who played Mercedes Jones in TV’s Glee. Inspired by R&B music acts of 1960s America, Dreamgirls opened in 1981 and won six Tony Awards. Originally choreographed by A Chorus Line co-creator Michael Bennett, the show will keep a large portion of the dance moves from its Broadway debut. Most recently, the LeisureGroupTravel.com <<
musical was adapted into an Oscar-winning film starring Beyonce Knowles. Fans of the 2004 comedy-drama Sideways, which also earned Oscars, will be able to catch the stage adaptation at London’s St. James Theatre from May 26 to July 9. The tale about middle age tells the story of 40-something friends Miles and Jack, who head to Santa Barbara for a week of wine tasting. Actress Glenda Jackson, a double Oscar winner,
returns to the stage this fall after a 25year absence to play the title role in Shakespeare’s tragic King Lear at the Old Vic theater. The former Member of Parliament, who retired from politics last year, follows in a long line of women who have taken on male Shakespearean roles. Jackson, 79, is best known for such films as Women in Love, Mary, Queen of Scots and A Touch of Class. Legendary stage and screen actor Michael Crawford, who starred in the title role of The Phantom of the Opera when it debuted in 1986, returns to the West End for the first time since his performance in Lloyd Webber’s The Wizard of Oz at the London Palladium in 2012. He takes the lead in a musical version of L.P. Hartley’s The Go-Between, a stage adaptation of the classic 1950s novel about
an elderly man who unintentionally unlocks memories of a past he had long since left behind. The show opens at the Apollo Theatre on May 27 and runs to Oct. 15. Funny Girl, the Broadway phenomenon and movie that gave Barbra Streisand her big break in the 1960s, moves from its sold-out run at the Menier Chocolate Factory to the Savoy Theatre for a 12-week season starting April 20. Featuring songs like “People” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” the musical is based on the life of Fanny Brice, who performed in films and on the stage. For something a little out of the ordinary, consider the world theater premiere of Goosebumps Alive, an interactive show based on the popular book series by R.L. Stine. Playing from April 6 to Sept. 4 at The Vaults, a cutting-edge arts venue under Waterloo Station, the production (for adult audiences) is presented promenade-style, as audience members wind their way through the abandoned railway tunnels of The Vaults and through a series of spine-tingling scenes inspired by some of Stine’s most iconic creations, including Stay Out of the Basement, One Day in Horrorland, Night of the Living Dummy and Say Cheese and Die! They need to steel themselves for experiences like being buried alive, witnessing a flock of birds crash into a window and being grappled by monsters (even in the toilets). Goosebumps Alive uses special effects, puppets, animatronics and artwork from the original book jacket illustrator. A children’s version of the show will run on weekends and holidays. From spooky stories and Shakespeare classics to electrifying, big-name musicals, the spring, summer and fall calendar certainly promises tour groups some riveting fare for a jolly good night on the town. If the best BBQ is at a small shack that only the locals visit, why not take your group there? Many tour operators, in fact, currently offer these experiences. The challenge is making sure they are truly authentic and modular, so that customers can “customize” their vacations. Let’s face it; no one wants to do the same thing everyone else does. A by-product of this is the proliferation of the specialist or niche tour operator. The days of being all things to all people are closing; today’s market has gotten too broad to expect that any one company can appeal to everyone. It is incumbent that operators specialize and offer more of these experiences.
The Evolution and Revolution In Touring A
t the beginning of the jet age, travel was a luxury to be afforded by the few. Affluent people dressed up in suits and ties, donned fancy dresses and traveled around the world to “put the red pin on the map.” For those lucky few, this was a great time of exclusivity and pampering. The travel industry evolved and grew. Enter the age of packaging tours that replicated trips that previously only the elite could afford. Programs contained the iconic attractions that everyone wanted to have their picture taken in front of - the Eiffel Tower, Great Pyramids, Machu Picchu. Modes of travel evolved. From motorcoach to train to ocean cruise ship to river cruise ship, the methods in which people arrive and interact with the destination improved, and in many cases, became the destination themselves. THE AGE OF CHOICE, FLEXIBILITY, PERSONALIZATION
Today’s generation of travelers represent a significant challenge for tour and travel companies. Unlike past generations they have LeisureGroupTravel.com <<
access to destination information and social networks that in the past only the most sophisticated travel experts could replicate. Think about the television industry. In the past, networks would create shows based on what they thought people would want to watch. And of course, those people would have to watch it at a specific time, on a specific day of the week. Channels and options were limited. Today, not only do most people have DVRs, but they also enjoy hundreds of channels that appeal to their specific tastes. The tour industry faces the same dilemma, and all segments need to give their customers unique and personalized experiences in order to stay relevant. Travelers these days don’t want to just see things, they want to personally experience them and immerse in the authenticity of the destination. They ask, “Where do the locals go?” and “what do the locals do?” On the surface, this sounds easy to deliver. Rather than just see Tuscany, why not have a lovely meal under the sun at a fifth-generation winery? Rather than just view a glacier in the Canadian Rockies, why not hike up one?
THE KILLER APP
This dynamic challenges the economic models of traditional tour operators. Tour margins are enhanced by volume purchasing, high load factors, and keeping operational overheads under control. This assumes that they are able to easily replicate the products and programs they know people will buy. So, if the market is changing so quickly, how can they continue to adapt in a cost-effective and efficient way? One solution is offering a series of options and experiences to a base, core package so that, in effect, everyone has a customized tour program to some extent after adding in their specific interests and components. Those “experiences” and “options” that end up being chosen most frequently thereby become the new core product, and the tour operator can now reap the economic benefits that purchasing these packages in bulk will yield. History is full of businesses that did not adapt their products, marketing, and distribution. Know your customers and constantly challenge your definitions of what is cool and hip with your products, and you will avoid becoming the Blockbuster Video of the tour industry. LGT
