Donating time and money for a good cause will brighten the holidays for you and the less fortunate By Jason Paha

CHARITY BICYCLE BUILD Similar to the toy-constructing exercise, a charity bicycle build will unify employees while enriching the life of a child. Windy City Charity Projects and Bikes for Goodness Sake can help your company host an event in which your cohorts, armed with wrenches and enthusiasm, race to build children’s bicycles. These charities can work with a local bicycle shop to deliver bikes, helmets and tool kits to your party. The shop will also, most likely, provide a mechanic for your event to look over the completed bikes. This ensures your mates’ atrocious assembly skills won’t cause a bicycle to disintegrate the moment a gleeful youngster hops on. After all, there’s a reason you all opted to become accountants instead of mechanics. If you want to go the extra mile and give your co-workers a heartwarming surprise, you can arrange to have the bike recipients rush into the room after the build to receive their presents. For once, the tears shed at a holiday party will be of the cheerful variety.

A

fter a long year of crunching numbers, wooing clients or performing whatever essential duties your job entails, the holidays can be a welcome respite from all of that labor. When it’s finally time to let your hair down at the company holiday party, it’s satisfying to reflect on your contributions and realize all the good you have done for your workplace. Clearly, you and your associates are hard workers and impeccable human beings, which makes you ideal candidates to tie a charitable cause into this year’s celebration. After all, what better time to let your philanthropic side flourish than the holidays? Rather than spending your party time exclusively binging and boozing (although, that does sound tempting), you can use the platform to give back to the community. Not only will this benefit your fellow man, it will give your co-workers an extra reason to feel good about themselves and the company they toil for. Here are some charitable ideas that will make your party a more meaningful endeavor without sapping the joy out of what typically is a whiz-bang of a soiree.

BUILDING A STUFFED ANIMAL About 15 million children in the United States, 21 percent of all youth in the country, live in families with incomes below the federal poverty threshold. While food and water are obviously more valuable requirements, one thing that’s often overlooked by altruistic sorts is a child’s need to play. A new toy will not only brighten a youngster’s spirit, it can give him or her a sense of pride in possessing something to call their own. Organizations like Windy City Charity Projects not only provide an opportunity for groups to build stuffed animals for the less fortunate, they also use those workshops to help employees develop problemsolving skills through a series of collaborative challenges. More than merely stuffing teddy bears, these programs focus on strategy, execution and parlaying the impact of independent roles into team success. That’s a fancy way of saying your co-workers will enjoy quality bonding time which will lead to children joyously hugging their new stuffed animal. An unequivocal win-win scenario. MOVIE MARATHON On the opposite end of the fitness spectrum, your company can host a movie marathon with the admission fee being given to charity. Whether you rent out a movie theater or a VFW hall, the minute you distribute a flier promoting a showing of both Weekend at Bernie’s and Weekend at Bernie’s II, you’ll have colleagues lining up to give you their money. If you want your cinematic experience to carry an elegant feel, Chicago is chock-full of impressive screening rooms that can be rented out. For instance, the Museum of Science and Industry’s Giant Dome Theater seats 260 and will project your movie on a five-story, domed wraparound; the Adler Planetarium’s theater seats 195 and features a dramatic 36-foot-tall domed ceiling; the Art Institute of Chicago offers a 950-seat auditorium containing multi-tiered seating, a loge and an upper balcony; and the Field Museum’s ornate 700-seat theater is notable for its columns, detailed recessed ceiling and state-of-the-art digital projection system. Any of those establishments will make your 16,000th viewing of A Christmas Story as memorable as the first.

WINTER CRAFT WORKSHOP The craftier members of your office will appreciate the chance to show off their hidden knitting, calligraphy and stonemasonry talents at a winter craft workshop. Charging an entry fee to cover supplies and collect donations will ensure money will reach an intended charity, and your co-workers will gladly pay for the opportunity to assemble a Santa Claus ornament out of a bag of walnuts. A workshop will enable your colleagues to construct whatever treasures their fertile minds think up, all while wearing grotesque Christmas sweaters and drinking various alcohol-infused beverages. If that isn’t a recipe for a blissful evening, you may be working with a nihilistic bunch of malcontents. In which case, you should really find a new gig. Whether you are cooking for a cause or showing off your crafty skills, embracing the spirit of giving will bring a smile to many faces. Milkos/Bigstock.com

FUNDRAISER RUN…OR WALK Certainly, any attempts to plan a run or walk in Chicago is risky, given the mercurial weather and frigid temperatures that envelop the holidays. That said, there are probably a few maniacs on your payroll who embrace Polar Plunge dips in Lake Michigan in March, so to those extreme types, a charity run will be akin to a walk in the park in July. However, if your office is filled with Arizona transplants who simply refuse to spend more than two minutes in the great Chicago outdoors, another option is to find an indoor track where participants can strut their stuff in a comfortable 72-degree setting. Another option is to procure the services of a gym that will let you sequester its equipment for a treadmill challenge. Those who run the farthest distance during a one-hour treadmill session can be deemed the victor. To make your event more inclusive (and to raise more money), promote the race to community members and invite them to compete. Drumming up donations should be simple enough, given even the tightest of wads tend to loosen their pocketbooks around the holidays. The most proficient fundraiser can be awarded a prize, from top-of-the-line running gear to a month’s supply of Twinkies, in case you don’t want to overdo the whole “being healthy” thing.

COOKING FOR A CAUSE AboutLife/Bigstock.com

More than 41 million Americans struggle with hunger, a number nearly equal to the 40.6 million living in poverty. Your holiday party can do its part to help battle this epidemic by hosting a company cookoff. Undoubtedly, some of your co-workers possess exquisite culinary skills, so why not put them to good use? A cookoff will test your associates’ creativity and teamwork as they are broken off into teams to create meals for a soup kitchen. Tasking participants with purchasing ingredients prior to the event will add to their feeling of satisfaction once the dish is prepared. Even those who are challenged by the process of hard-boiling eggs can contribute to the cause by reading directions, opening cans or offering platitudes that typically annoy, but in this case, might inspire. Just when it appears simultaneously cooking black beans and Clams Casino will overwhelm Dolores the software developer, a well-timed “Hang in there” from Bernard the project engineer might get her over the hump and motivate the team to create an exemplary meal. ■

Forego the Traditional Holiday Party for These Team-Building Outings Instead of drinking wine and eating cheese, test your co-workers’ fortitude with these entertaining activities By Jason Paha

R

umor has it, the holiday season comes around on a yearly basis. While this may be a joyous development for most, those entrusted with organizing the company holiday party might think otherwise. After all, David and Lesley in the art department are still recuperating from the stress of organizing the Secret Santa exchange and deciding which brand of mistletoe to hang, and now they’re expected to conjure up another batch of creative party ideas? It’s exhausting. Perhaps this year, your company can ease David and Lesley’s strain by taking your holiday party on the road for a boisterous team-building outing. Not only will your co-workers appreciate the change of scenery, the benefits of such an excursion can be significant. You undoubtedly already know cheerful workers make for a more productive office, but did you realize the issue runs deeper than that? According to the American Psychological Association, an unhappy workplace not only affects production, it can increase depression and heart disease rates. On the other end of the spectrum, management expert David Maister studied 29 companies across the world and discovered the most successful businesses tend to have more fun. Among the more popular ways these companies put smiles on their workers’ faces was to arrange group days out of the office and encourage employees to work hard and play hard. Maister discovered that while it’s fine and dandy

HeresChicago.com

for employees to buckle down together in the office, helping them thrive as a unit outside working hours is what truly strengthens their personal relationships. And one of the best ways to do that is to plan team-building events that engage employees in entertaining, challenging activities. Fortunately for event planners across the Windy City, Chicago is teeming with enticing options that can entertain your co-workers and make your avant-garde holiday party one to remember. Here are a few of those options:

ARCADES Adult arcades have grown in popularity in recent years as establishments recognize that combining the grown-up pleasures of imbibing alcohol with the childlike joy of eating white pellets while swerving around pesky ghosts is an intoxicating mix. If patrons can show off their impressive Pac-Man skills in front of their stupefied associates, even better. Companies can take advantage of their employees’ competitive nature by taking a trip to the arcade and splitting the group into teams to see who can capture the most tickets or tally the highest scores. The victorious faction can earn a prize akin to a gift card or a delectable meal, and more importantly, can lord their gaming prowess over their comrades in ensuing water cooler meetups. An ideal locale for such an outing is FTW in Chicago, which contains more than 130 games, ranging from carnival classics like Down the Clown and Go Fishing to deluxe attractions like Sega’s Showdown. 2018

2018-19 Features pp4_Layout 1 8/3/18 9:01 AM Page 12

COMPETITIVE OUTINGS Depending on how fit your workplace is, there is a variety of quasi-athletic jaunts that can stoke your compatriots’ competitive fire. Companies that lean toward the vigorous side can engage in a cordial game of volleyball, an activity that has been described as “the ultimate team sport” because progress relies solely on everyone successfully doing their job. Which is, of course, an apt metaphor for any business. Classically speaking, bowling is always a welcome undertaking because it combines people’s passion for competition with their fondness for wearing colorful shoes. The sport is an ideal platform for the Jeffrey Lebowskis of the office to mingle with less-avid bowlers, and with alcohol widely available, the prospects of amusing and carefree conversation is probable. Along those lines, many bars or restaurants are willing to set aside space for your company to host tournaments that range from darts to bocce ball to bean bags. One such establishment is Lucky Strike Chicago, a 36,000square-foot upscale bowling and billiards lounge, restaurant, bar and wine lounge located on the second floor in the AMC movie complex in River East. Lucky Strike features 18 state-of-the-art lanes and many big screens throughout the venue and will host groups of all sizes.

For a less traditional experience, WhirlyBall is a raucous sport that combines the unusual but entertaining trinity of lacrosse, bumper cars and basketball. A WhirlyBall team consists of five players, with each competitor riding in an electric bumper car and brandishing a scoop used to pass the ball to teammates or shoot at a goal. There are few activities on this worldly plane that will unify an office quicker than when the company CFO deftly eludes the CEO before whipping a precision pass to the receptionist for the winning score. While some more youthful types may consider golf a bit stodgy, Topgolf, a sports entertainment complex that features a high-tech golf game, challenges that line of thinking. Topgolf, which has locations in Wood Dale and Naperville, features a patented technology that allows players to track their golf balls and accurately score each shot based on the target it enters. If you are feeling a bit parched while playing, or your stomach growls, Topgolf offers a wide variety of food and beverages, including an enticing chicken and waffle slider. Topgolf is designed for your assemblage as it easily hosts company events, tournaments, fundraisers, parties and large groups of 13 or more or small groups of seven to 12 players. A trip to an indoor climbing center (below, left) will strengthen your co-workers’ bodies, while an excursion to an escape room (below, right) will enhance their minds.

ROCK CLIMBING Unless your company plans on footing the bill to send its employees to Yosemite National Park, this will be an indoor expedition. Fortunately, Chicago has several indoor climbing centers that can placate the most insatiable of mountaineers including Lakeshore Sport & Fitness, which has two locations in Chicago, with the Illinois Center location sporting North America’s tallest indoor climbing wall available for rent. While at first glance, rock climbing has the look of an individual sport, it is actually an excellent team-building activity that helps competitors develop their coaching skills, goal-setting processes and problem-solving abilities. As a climber ascends the wall, they receive moral and physical support from their team members who not only offer guidance, but also exert tension on the rope to prevent a climber from plummeting to their doom. Thus, when Dan in sales tries his best Sylvester Stallone in Cliffhanger impression and winds up losing his grip, he’ll be eternally grateful Randy in editorial was operating the rope with his preternaturally steady hands and extraordinarily calm demeanor.

ESCAPE ROOMS

SCAVENGER HUNTS

You may wonder how being stuck in a room with Barry from IT can be anything but torturous. In truth, the disproportionate amount of time Barry spends playing Grand Theft Auto has almost certainly honed his problem-solving skills, which can be beneficial to your team. Escape rooms are a popular adventure in which participants search for clues, solve puzzles and use strategy in an attempt to vacate a locked room in an allotted amount of time (usually an hour). Successful escape room endeavors require communication and cooperation, and they build team-based problem-solving skills. Escape rooms encourage patrons to think quickly and creatively and share their insights with one another in order to solve mysteries. The more who contribute, the better off a team will be, and the skills your team displays will also transfer to the working environment. By the time your session has elapsed, your co-workers will have developed a stronger bond. As an added bonus, if they escape the room in time, they’ll feel like geniuses and will have you to thank for unlocking their heretofore undiscovered intellectual prowess. Among the escape rooms that can be found in the Chicagoland area are Escape Reality, in River North, which features six pop culture-inspired rooms; and the Hard Rock Café Chicago, which offers rooms with themes like Mission Mars, Prison Break, Special Ops, Gold Rush and The Heist for groups of up to 40 people.

Chicago is a wonderland of majestic architecture and flourishing commerce, and what better way to experience those than unleashing your co-workers on a scavenger hunt that will have them scouring the town for elusive goodies. Just like when they were children, a scavenger hunt will infuse your associates with a sense of glee and wonderment, but instead of rummaging through prickly bushes and nettlesome shrubbery, they can peruse whatever neighborly taverns, restaurants and shops that opt to play along. For those seeking an organized hunt, Scavenger Hunts in Chicago enables groups to experience the sights and sounds of Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. Participants can embark on an Amazing Race-style hunt in which they visit iconic Chicago locales from the Magnificent Mile to Lincoln Park, Wrigley Field and the Loop. Those looking to hunt in a particular part of the city can choose an exclusive program designed to unfold in the location of their choice. A scavenger hunt will not only boost the local economy when your office mates share a few bites and beverages on their quest, it will also enable them to connect over their mutual talents of overcoming challenges and deciphering riddles. And what company wouldn’t love to have a collection of Sherlock Holmes-types on its payroll? ■

Creative Foods and Drinks Will Enliven Your Company’s Holiday Party Chicagoland experts provide their thoughts on festive dishes to serve your guests By Jason Paha

T

here’s a venerable proverb that proclaims: An organization is only as strong as its weakest link. The same can be said about a company holiday party. Regardless of how well the other facets of your celebration unfold, if the food you serve resembles that of a weak sausage link, partygoers will notice. And they will talk. To avoid having your spread excoriated by your peers, it’s a good idea to serve creative concoctions that will have the break room buzzing come Monday morning. We know you’re overloaded with life’s daily entanglements and finding the time to unearth inventive party snacks is a challenge, thus, we enlisted the thoughts of Chicagoland entertainment experts who provided us with a slew of imaginative cuisine and beverage ideas that will liven up any soiree.

DELECTABLE DISHES When the guests first arrive, they will undoubtedly be feeling the chill from the frigid Chicago winter. Aside from warming them up with a stiff drink or two, you can hearken them back to the sweltering summer months with a dog-days-of-summer meat spread. A tailgatethemed meal of hot dogs, brats, coleslaw and burgers will appeal to the blue-collar members of your company, and even the more affluent sorts will appreciate the chance to graze like a commoner for a few hours. If that option is a bit too rudimentary for your highbrow associates, Bryan Joseph, kitchen manager and lead chef from Parties That Cook, a mobile culinary events company, suggests serving items like sweet potato latkes with cranberry jalapeno relish, crostini with HeresChicago.com

honey glazed ham, goat cheese and sweet pepper jelly or roasted lamb brochettes with mint pistachio chutney. "I love these recipes because they are fairly simple yet bring a unique twist to holiday favorites,” Joseph said. If the thought of preparing even a morsel of grub for the party is too overwhelming for your hectic schedule, Chicago is awash with accomplished restaurants and eateries that will happily serve inventive dishes. Take, for instance, Jake Melnick’s Corner Tap. Natalie Kay, group sales manager for Jake Melnick's, recommends offerings from Jake’s private events menu like chicken and waffle bites made with honey butter and cayenne syrup, firecracker shrimp consisting of HeresChicago.com

crispy breaded shrimp tossed in sweet Thai chili sauce, and mini bacon-wrapped hot links with a chipotle crema. “These are the perfect bite-sized foods for a party, they pack huge flavor but are easy to eat while mingling,” Kay said. Hilary Saurer, director of sales at Levy Restaurants at River Roast, is a fan of Thanksgiving-style fare at holiday functions and suggests setting up a carving station and pairing a roast with sides like a beet salad and sweet potatoes. “This makes for a fun and interactive dining experience while offering delicious dishes your guests will enjoy,” Saurer said. “The holidays are the times when you can let go of your diet a bit and really splurge and these items are so delicious, they are worth a splurge.” 2018

ENLIVENING LIBATIONS No party, company or otherwise, is complete without spirits to lift everyone’s … spirits. Melissa Hahn, senior account lead for Global Enterprise Solutions, proposes hosts should serve vibrant drinks that not only appeal to attendees’ taste buds but also entice their eyes. And if you can pair your drinks with a festive film that fits the season, even better. “I suggest to get creative with your drinks,” Hahn said. “Have a holiday theme selection and utilize the red, white, blue and green colors to enhance your holiday theme. I would suggest coming up with some fun names for drinks, or you could even make a spin on your holiday party with some of the best holiday movies. “Here are some fun drinks to serve,” Hahn added. “A candy cane cocktail (candy canes crushed for garnish combined with strawberry vodka, white crème de menthe and cranberry juice); candy cane Kahlua hot chocolate; Santa Clausmopolitan (vodka, cranberry juice, lime juice and cranberries); salted carmel eggnog; jingle juice (cran-apple juice, red Moscato, prosecco, limes, vodka and frozen cranberries); Jack Frost (shredded coconut, pineapple juice, vodka, cream of coconut and Blue Curacao); classic cocoa with a twist by adding white chocolate; cranberry mimosas or a cranberry mule (cranberry juice, vodka, lime topped with ginger beer and whole cranberries).”

Kay is a fan of a spiced pear sangria, featuring dry white wine, brandy and pear juice stirred together to form a base and coupled with sliced pears and cinnamon sticks, which, when stewed overnight, add extra flavor and spice. “(This drink) is a perfect complement to all of the flavors you’ll see during the holidays,” Kay said. Martha Link, corporate catering manager for Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse in River North, thinks the winter frost won’t dampen guests’ cravings for an adult milkshake. “Clients and planners are always looking for unique items to get their guests’ attention at a holiday gathering,” Link said. “We have found our ‘boozy shakes’ are a fun and different twist on the holidays. Despite the cold weather in Chicago, our Kahlua eggnog shakes will warm up the crowd.” Another way to warm up the crowd is to serve searing or spicy drinks, and Joseph is partial to providing hot chocolate with candy cane-infused whiskey and a ginger spice elftini containing ginger-infused vodka, cranberry and lime juice.

From tasty snacks to delicious drinks, the holidays are a great time to let your creativity flourish.

“I would suggest coming up with some fun names for drinks, or you could even make a spin on your holiday party with some of the best holiday movies.”

“The idea to keep guests engaged with each other as well as the event itself is the main goal here.” —Nina Madonia Director of Business Development, Inspired Catering Events

—Melissa Hahn Account Lead, Global Enterprise Solutions

SUCCULENT SWEETS Tis the season for your officemates to bake copious amounts of desserts while flexing their creative muscle in the kitchen. You can rival their artistry with imaginative creations of your own, like: eggnog gingerbread trifle; sparkling cranberry cheesecake (the sugared cranberries add the sparkle); Grinch-inspired cupcakes (made, naturally, with green food coloring); Christmas light cupcakes (using M&M’s as the imitation lights) and ugly sweater cakes (decorated to look like an unseemly sweater with whatever treat combination you can devise). Joseph recommends an intriguing alternative to traditional Christmas confections in the form of pumpkin rugelach Jewish crescent cookies with a pumpkin spice flair. If that doesn’t fit your fancy, Josephs says mini apple tarts with a bourbon glaze will pique partygoers’ interests. Whatever you opt to serve, Nina Madonia, director of business development for Inspired Catering and Events, advises you do so in a manner that motivates guests to socialize while nibbling. “The interactive theme is picking up steam and continues to be incorporated into corporate events,” Madonia said. “Planners don’t even need a theme, necessarily, to include some fun games or activities. The idea to keep guests engaged with each other as well as the event itself is the main goal here. On the catering side, we are

still working with planners to have visually appealing food stations and chef interaction. “At Inspired Catering and Events, we have a cute French crepe station, where guests line up for delicious made-to-order delights with mouth-watering toppings including fresh fruit, Nutella, chocolate sauce, caramel and whipped cream. We need to have two or three stations because everybody loves them.” Hahn shares Madonia’s sentiments and thinks international fare will give your event an aristocratic feel. “For a great networking and conversation piece after your dinner, have a cookie or a dessert bar,” Hahn said. “A creative idea would be to work with your chef to come up with a traditional holiday dessert menu from around the world. Have a little history behind the dessert you’re serving. You can serve flan from Mexico; chocolate almond croissant or madeleine cookies from France; amaretti cookies from Italy or melomakarona (a traditional egg-shaped Greek cookie made mainly from flour, olive oil and honey).” After all, if your skinflint company won’t ship the office to Paris this holiday season, a globally inspired spread at the party will still have your guests feeling like world travelers. Especially if they squint. Through blurred vision, the Damen Avenue silos kind of resemble the Eiffel Tower. ■

iFLY Indoor Skydiving ince 1998, iFLY Indoor Skydiving has taken corporate events to new heights—literally. But helping people achieve the dream of flight definitely took some time. iFLY initially began as SkyVenture, LLC and focused on perfecting indoor flight technology before opening its first facility in 1999. SkyVenture then rebranded itself as iFLY and kept the original company as its lead manufacturer. Now, with 37 locations worldwide—three of which are in the Chicago area—this unique flight service successfully transforms a childhood aspiration into an exhilarating adventure for millions of people. So, how exactly would I fly, you might ask? Luckily, none of it actually involves jumping out of an airplane, falling or being experienced. Flying indoors means that each person will be floating in a vertical wind tunnel and, while you won’t be falling out of a plane, you will exercise the same skills as the professionals. To learn these skills, groups participate in classroom training led by an International Bodyflight Association (IBA)certified instructor. Groups will then “gear up” with a bodysuit, helmet and goggles. Finally,

S

your instructors will lead you to the Flight Chamber for your flight session. Adult flyers usually book two or more flights to maximize the fun. Flyers that excel at the basics may try bodyflight, which combines basic in-air techniques with acrobatics. A special surprise awaits at the end, as groups are treated to an instructor air show afterward. Corporate groups that book flights with iFLY will learn a new talent while bonding with their coworkers. In addition to booking flight packages, you can reserve meeting rooms, semi-private space or the entire venue, complete with food and beverage options. These impressive spaces are fit for any small or large group holding a business meeting, team bonding session or holiday party. No matter what the cause, an experience at iFLY will instill in everyone that “Teams that fly together, stay together.”
