Welcome to Oregon
Jim Etzel Sport Oregon
If you’re an experienced event planner, you’ve probably read a thousand of these letters by now. Every city and every state thinks they’re special, right? They’ve all got sparkling new venues, superior hotels and endless visitor attractions. Well, here in Oregon, we’ve got all that too. But that’s not what makes us special. There’s an intense spirit of sport that flows through our entire state, from the bright lights of Portland to the windswept shores of Bandon Dunes; from the stunningly scenic Columbia River Gorge – home to the world’s best windsurfing and kiteboarding – to Smith Rock in Terrebonne, one of the greatest rock climbing areas in the country. Our coastline is home to remarkable dunes and beaches, while the temperate climate of the Willamette Valley allows for tournament play year-round. Come to Oregon, where you can go surfing in the Pacific Ocean in the morning, ski on Mt. Hood in the afternoon, and enjoy tax-free shopping in all of our stores, all in the same day. Can you imagine running a half marathon through the lush vineyards of worldclass Oregon wine country in the morning and then being inspired by jaw-dropping scenic wonders like Crater Lake and the Painted Hills the next morning? We don’t imagine it, we live it! Sport Oregon and its partners across the state are committed to bringing you an exceptional event. We’re fully engaged with you, from the bid stage through the planning process to event execution. This is why we break attendance records for events like the NCAA Women’s Basketball Regionals and earn unprecedented praise for staging best-in-class events like the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships, USA Fencing North American Cup, and the USA BMS Great Northwest Nationals. And this is why, in 2021, Oregon will host the IAAF World Track & Field Championships, held in the United States for the first time ever. But we’re not stopping there. We’re looking for every possible opportunity to bring the best in sport to our state. So, give us a shot. If you’d like to explore options for bringing your next event to Oregon, e-mail me at jim@sportoregon.org, and we’ll quickly figure out if we can make it happen. Consider this your formal invitation – please join us as we celebrate the magnificent spirit of sport in the state that we are so fortunate to call home. Sincerely,
Jim Etzel CEO Sport Oregon

RUNNER’S WORLD Oregon has long embraced the runner’s high on the track, pavement and in the wild
S
teve Prefontaine described running the way you’d hear someone else describe a famous painting, a harmonious melody or a brilliant violin solo. “A race is a work of art that people can look at and be affected in as many ways as they’re capable of understanding”, the immortal Pre pontificated, in an efficacious manner only a celebrated champion of his stature could produce. In the years before his tragic death in 1975 and in the decades since, the state of Oregon has been a powerhouse for running events of every nature, with Pre canonized as its patron saint. The University of Oregon is the epicenter within the United States for track and field, where Hayward Field stands tall as the Yankee Stadium of its sport. Under the early direction of coach Bill Bowerman and former UO runner Phil Knight, Nike blossomed in Oregon and eventually grew into its position today as the most valuable brand in sports business, with its signature Swoosh as one of the world’s most recognizable logos. Oregon’s love affair with running transcends far beyond the city limits of TrackTown, USA (Eugene) and onto the trails that cluster its gorgeous countryside, as well as the streets of its numerous postcard-worthy cities and towns. Whether you’re looking to run a 5 or 10K race, half or full marathon, or just trying to find a nice trail to get in a leisurely stroll while taking in some backcountry scenery, Oregon has a place for your next fun run.

Sports Planning Guide
COMPETITIVE RACES AND RUNNING TRAILS Oregon’s natural beauty lends itself to some pretty amazing road courses for runners who are interested in marathons, half marathons and 10K races. The Charleston Salmon Run takes place annually in October, with all three distances represented. All of the races begin and end in Charleston, while runners will follow scenic routes along the southern Oregon Coast. Additionally, there is a 1 mile Crab Walk event for those who’d like to participate. The city of Coos Bay also hosts the Prefontaine Memorial Run annually in September, with 2019’s rendition serving as the event’s 40th running. There is a 5K high school team competition race as well as the 10K main event and a 2-mile fun walk. Portland hosts a few larger races, including the Shamrock Run Portland, Run like Hell Half Marathon, and of course, the Portland Marathon, which annually takes place annually in October. The race debuted a new course in 2019 which highlighted some of the city’s best sights. Runners were treated to four different river crossings on three different bridges, got to run through historic Reed College and were treated to skyline views along the banks of the Willamette River. The race begins and ends at Waterfront Park, yielding a great view and after party once the long run is over. Salem hosts the Spirit of Oregon Half Marathon in October, with competitive events in the half marathon, 5K and 10K variety, @SportsPlanGuide #SportsPG

Wine Country Half Marathon

as well as a half-mile event for children. Among other highlights, the half marathon course enables runners a trek through Bush Pasture Park and Geer Community Park and it loops around the Oregon State Capitol building. Eugene annually hosts the Prefontaine Classic; one of the world’s premier track and field meets, in June at Hayward Field, and usually welcomes the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the same month at the same venue. The Eugene Marathon, held every spring, is another premier event in the city. This bucket-list race is one of the most environmentally sustainable in the Northwest. August brings a month of entertaining relay options to Oregon, with the Cascade Lakes Relay getting the party started. The rugged 216 mile challenge sees teams compete over the course of two days overnight to run from Silver Lake to Bend. A few weeks later, more than 12,000 runners stream 199 miles from Mt. Hood to the Oregon Coast in the Hood to Coast Relay, finishing with an epic beach party. The Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon, 5K, and two-person-relay closes out the month with an unforgettable point-to-point course, which finishes at a wine festival in charming downtown of Carlton. Also in November, Redmond hosts its annual Redmond Turkey Trot, with a 5K and 10K race available. Runners travel to the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center to check in or grab a bite to eat, while post-race food includes plenty of fruit and baked goods, including miniature pies. Runners are encouraged to wear a costume, since a costume committee will be on hand to credit contest winners and ensure the most creative receive pumpkin pie. Albany hosts the Albany Beer “Run” race in September, a .3K slog for the common man, where the race begins at the Calapooia Brewery and ends a little less than one city block later with a well-stocked beer garden that’s also available before the race. For those seeking a greater challenge, Albany also hosts the Gobbler’s Revenge annually on Thanksgiving Day, with a half marathon, 10K and 5K races and 2.5 mile walk. Proceeds from the race benefit medical needs in the area. Staying in the holiday spirit, Medford gets into the Yuletide spirit with the Medford Ugly Sweater 5K, which collaborates with the Jackson County Foster Parent Association to improve the lives of foster children and support foster, adoptive and relative families. The run courses through downtown Medford in the middle of December. Rolling into the spring, the Corvallis Half Marathon will take place on April 11, 2020, where the scenic 13.1 mile trek, dubbed the ‘Tour de Corvallis’ takes runners through two gradual slow climbs and two gradual descents. A 5K is also offered on flatter ground. This year’s race will mark the event’s 10th year. Other can’t-miss running events include the Columbia River Crossing 10K Run/Walk in Astoria, Happy Girls Run in Bend and the Providence Rogue Run Half Marathon in Medford. For runners who just want to get in touch with the wild while going on a scenic run, the trails along Oregon’s rugged coastline are an excellent place to start. The Short Sands South Trailhead weaves through the low-lying forests of Tillamook County, while a crossover to the North Neahkahnie Trailhead provides a steeper run up Neahkahnie Mountain, where the summit offers unbelievable views of the coast. If you’re living the big city life in Portland but still want to get out for a soothing run, the Willamette River Loop offers an 11-mile trail with views of the Willamette River and Portland skyline. If you’d like to get further outside the city, Mount Tabor in Southeast Portland is a great choice for some hill-running. Head up the summit of the inactive volcano for a fresh look at the city and the mountains in the distance beyond. Oregon’s incredible natural backdrop and massive volume of competitions have made it the perfect place for a running event. A
s one of the most geographically diverse states in the U.S., Oregon’s unique landscape is pocketed with volcanoes, dense evergreen and mixed forests, ample bodies of water, areas of high desert and semi-arid shrublands. Simply put, Oregon’s topography is riddled with landscapes that arouse the imagination, with every Polaroid reminiscent of something you’d expect to see on another planet. The Beaver State’s western mountainous region is home to three of the most prominent mountain peaks in the country. Oregon’s landscape varies from its rain forest along the Pacific Coast Range to the barren desert in its southeast, while central Oregon features a high desert and volcanic rock formations resulting from lava beds. Whether you’re looking for a hike, bike, swim, leisurely nature walk or the perfect photo, Oregon is the place to go for those who love outdoor adventures. Here are some locales across the state that will make great backdrops and excursions to your tournaments. COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE The largest national scenic area in the United States begins at the western edge of the Columbia River Gorge as onlookers are greeted with a view of the ferocious Columbia River itself. Dozens of waterfalls line the Columbia River Highway from there as the landscape expands in front of your eyes. Cyclists will love the Post Canyon mountain bike network, while water sports enthusiasts thrive along the banks of the Hood River. For those looking to take a break to enjoy the scenery with cool refreshment, the Gorge has plenty of craft beer and wine options found throughout its unique geography. Serene and uncommonly clear, Crater Lake is a sight to behold.
CRATER LAKE NATIONAL PARK America’s deepest lake is also one of its most strikingly beautiful. With a depth of 1,943 feet, Crater Lake rests where a dormant volcano once stood 12,000 feet tall before collapsing after a major eruption 7,700 years ago. After time, further eruptions formed Wizard Island, a cinder cone rising from the water which features a dizzying array of volcanic features, including a second rocky island, the Phantom Ship. The lake itself is just one of many attractions in Crater Lake National Park. Explore the old-growth forests draped around the landscape, where protected tree species have grown for more than 100 years. HAYSTACK ROCK Perhaps Oregon’s most recognizable (and Instagram-worthy) natural landmark, Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach is much more than just a pretty picture. Millions of years ago tectonic plate movements yielded drastic rock formations like Haystack Rock all along the state’s coastline. Today the rock is part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge in an effort to keep the birds who call it home safe from human intervention. HELLS CANYON NATIONAL RECREATION AREA Located on the border of northeastern Oregon and western Idaho, Hells Canyon National Recreation Area is the deepest river gorge in North America. The canyon lies more than a mile below Oregon’s western rim and 8,000 feet below He Devil Peak of Idaho’s Seven Devils Mountains. Visitors can look out for animals and wildlife native to the region as well as ancient pictographs and log cabins left over from the 19th century gold rush.

SMITH ROCK Located in central Oregon and attracting climbers from around the world, Smith Rock formed its towers of volcanic ash out of the dust of the high desert. Hiking and mountain biking opportunities abound in the birthplace of American sport climbing, while golden eagles and prairie falcons soar overhead. Phil’s Trail takes mountain bikers for a wild ride, while cyclists can enjoy scenic bikeways like Sisters to Smith Rock and Madras Mountain Views. The surrounding area is a natural playground, too, with plenty of golfing, caving, paddle boarding and skiing nearby. Mt. Bachelor
MT. BACHELOR Formed between 18,000 to 8,000 years ago, Mount Bachelor is a stratovolcano in the Cascade Range of central Oregon. A ski area opened on the mountain in 1958, while the volcano’s summit holds the Mount Bachelor Observatory. Snowshoeing, snow skiing, snow tubing and dog sledding, among other activities, are popular on the mountain in the winter. The volcano’s summit can be accessed by a climbing trail that travels over lava. MT. HOOD Another stratovolcano in the Cascade Range, Mt. Hood is the second-most climbed mountain in the world and the only year-round ski resort in North America. The area surrounding the mountain is gorgeous, with flowers lining hiking trails in the spring. Alpine lakes like Trillium Lake, Lost Lake and Mirror Lake provide unique views of the mountain, while vineyards and farms surround the area as well.
PAINTED HILLS Even in a state filled with natural splendor, the Painted Hills stand out. Millions of years of the planet’s history are found in the layers of mountains of earth, revealed in a riveting color palate of yellows, golds, blacks and reds. The Painted Hills are part of the John Day Fossil Beds, which includes the Clarno Unit features Mars-like pillars formed by waterfalls and volcanic sludge, as well as the Sheep Rock Unit, where fossils from prehistoric animals are on display at the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center. WALLOWA MOUNTAINS The magnificent Wallowa Mountains are one of Oregon’s best kept and most visually striking secrets. Located in northeastern Oregon, the mountain range is drained by the Wallowa River. Crystal clear lakes, picturesque views and access to prime ranchland make this area ideal and easy for larger group touring and epic adventuring. It’s no wonder that the Wallowa’s are called Oregon’s Alps, as they offer the state’s highest peaks outside of the Cascades. SPG

Retrofit Project – Golf courses turned into soccer complexes. Big-box retail stores becoming hardwood sports venues. Tennis courts converted to pickleball. Pools retrofitted into skate parks. If there is a facilit that isn’t pulling its financial weight, it is ripe fo a change. We are finding this especially tru with golf courses and aquatics facilities that are owned by municipalities. If a venue has a negative cash flo , cities and counties are looking to get those assets off their balance sheets one way or another. 26 Sports Planning Guide SportsPlanningGuide.com

Participation (or lack thereof) – Research by the Aspen Institute, the drivers of Project Play, indicates that a majority of youth stop playing sports at age 11. Three years ago the average age was 14. This trend is not only bad for sports tourism, it is bad for our nation. Sedentary kids playing video games all day is not a pathway to success on several fronts. Sports teaches kids so many valuable life lessons that a video game console cannot. We are losing this battle and if the tide doesn’t turn, the sports tourism industry will take the brunt of the hit in the future.
