By the Numbers: VIRGINIA’S SPORTS TOURISM RISE

Virginia’s economic impact study highlights rapid growth in sports tourism industry

Virginia has some of the best golf courses in the country.

VVirginia’s successful economic impact in the sports tourism industry is no secret. The 2023 State of the Industry Report by the Sports Events and Tourism Association (Sports ETA) revealed the Commonwealth of Virginia is among the top 10 states in the U.S. for most economic impact. These annual reports by Sports ETA are all encompassing, which means that they provide data on a national scale without great depth for specific states.

Virginia set out to change that with its own in-depth report at the state level. While it is not an annual report, the Economic Impact of Sports Tourism in Virginia has set new standards for states across the country, helping to better understand why the industry is critically important to statewide growth by example of Virginia’s continued success by the numbers.

The Core Numbers

Released in 2023 by Virginia Tourism Corporation, in collaboration with Oxford-based Tourism Economics, the Economic Impact of Sports Tourism in Virginia provides data from 2019 through 2022. Splitting the state into four regions—Central & Southern, Northern, Coastal and Western—the report takes into account adult and youth amateur events and collegiate tournaments, not collegiate regular season games or professional sports.

There have been arguments that sports facilities themselves do not bring in enough revenue to account for the cost of being built, but Virginia’s study highlights why they are important on a greater scale. While tournament operations in the state accounted for $289.3 million, sports traveler visitor spending accounted for $2.4 billion across all communities, bringing the direct spending impact to $2.7 billion—up 12 percent from the previous year. That $2.4 billion came from visitor spending at restaurants, hotels, retailers and other local businesses.

“Understanding the economic impact of sports tourism is crucial for driving local support and maximizing the benefits for our communities,” said Megan Hazzard, manager of business development and event operations at Henrico Sports & Entertainment Authority. “[The report provides] insights into job creation, revenue growth and tax revenues from sports events and facilities throughout the Commonwealth and helps identify which bring the most benefits.”

The Greater Economic Impact on Virginia

It’s critical to understand where these economic impact numbers come from and ultimately the wider scale of sports tourism’s importance. According to the report, 12.1-million sports travelers attended a sports tournament, race or other event in 2022, with approximately 45 percent staying overnight and the remaining 55 percent visiting for a day. From lodging to transportation, all four regions of the state reported higher direct spending in almost every sector, even when compared to 2019’s pre-pandemic numbers.

“The 2023 U.S. Youth Soccer Eastern Regional generated over 7,000 room nights and $8 million in economic impact for Northern Virginia, which added to the post-pandemic recovery,” said Torye Hurst, national sports sales manager

at Visit Loudoun, who also commented on the importance of having plentiful and up-to-date facilities. “We are only as good as our sports venues and several have been added in recent years such as Hal & Bernie Hanson Regional Park, Ion International Training Center, Segra Field and the future looks especially bright with the addition of the USTA Mid-Atlantic Campus in Fall 2026.”

Sports travelers in 2022 generated a total fiscal tax impact of $645.2 million, of which $165.9 million was collected by the state government and $177.9 million by local governments. As growth continued post-pandemic, this also directly impacted the state’s workforce with the industry supporting 28,138 full-time and part-time jobs.

“Sports tourism represents 73 percent of the Richmond Region’s overall group bookings,” said Jerrine Lee, vice president of sales at Richmond Region Tourism. “Our small businesses see the impact of tournaments and events as teams, families and fans visit restaurants and stores before and after games. The report allows us to keep the business community informed and engaged on sports tourism’s economic impact.”

Discover the Full Depth of Virginia’s Work

Overall, the sports tourism economic impact accounts for eight percent of the tourism economy in Virginia. This may not have seemed like much at first glance, but breaking down the industry’s numbers first and understanding exactly what that percentage represents, it highlights for destinations across the state the reason to keep building new facilities or repurposing existing infrastructure, improving existing ones and spending more money and effort into this rapidly growing industry.

VIRGINIA’S NATIONAL PARKS

Possess Both Captivating Scenery and History

From natural beauty to historic battlefields, there’s plenty to explore and take in at Virginia’s parks

Virginia’s parks offer a unique tapestry brimming with a storied past.

WWith Virginia’s enchanting natural beauty and colorful history, visiting the state’s national and state parks creates unforgettable experiences.

From the jagged cliffs at Shenandoah National Park to the beautiful grasslands at Petersburg National Battlefield, Virginia’s parks offer a unique tapestry brimming with a storied past.

Shenandoah National Park

Nestled at the summit of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah National Park spans over 200,000 acres of natural splendor, including over 100 miles of the famous Appalachian Trail. Amid the trees and ever-changing topography, 500 miles of hiking trails wind throughout the entire park, from mountain peaks to hollow woodlands.

The unbridled beauty of this park is also a refuge to over 50 mammal species and 20-plus reptile and amphibian species. Both resident and transient birds find safety within the oak-hickory forests. The 570-million-year-old sheer, jagged cliffs of Stony Man are classified as greenstones, which make up the highest peak at the park.

Great Falls Park

The Potomac River collects drainage from a vast 15,000 square miles of land causing rapid currents throughout Great Falls National Park. The breadth of the Falls’ rivers ranges between 60 to 100 feet, slimming as it feeds into Mather Gorge. The topography’s formation makes this environment perfect for flooding, as the surging current of the Potomac River must funnel through the restricted chokepoint. Flooding is frequent, promoting healthy plantlife, such as sticky goldenrod, as water provides efficient means of transport for sediment and seeds.

The three overlooks offer splendid views of Rapid Falls, with Overlook Three allowing visitors the most head-on perspective of the Great Falls.

Historic Jamestown

The Jamestown Rediscovery project commenced in 1994 under the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA)—now Preservation Virginia—with the goal to locate the original James Fort, ca 1607–1624. The search has been successful in finding the region of the fort and principal buildings, and unearthed more than three millionartifacts. Researchers have been able to understand details about the early settlers’ life and their relationship with Native Americans.

The history is one riddled with disease, famine and violence. The Virginia Company settlers arrived on Jamestown Island on May 14, 1607 with intentions to make an English colony. Within days, the Powhatan people attacked, beginning what would be a tumultuous relationship between the two groups. Eventually the settlers were able to create the first permanent colony in North America.

Fort Monroe

Encircled by Chesapeke Bay at Old Point Comfort, this former military installation’s history is absorbed with the lives of the Powhatan People, early English colonization and military

Virginia is home to an array of beautiful natural attractions.

occupation. The surrounding area has a touch of natural beauty, historical significance and everything in between.

The Fort Monroe Visitor and Education Center welcomes visitors to Fort Monroe, which puts on exquisite exhibits and works to commemorate the historical feats of this location. The center highlights the intersection of three cultures throughout 400 years of documented history: Native American, African and European.

The Casemate Museum is housed within the Fort, focusing on the seacoast fortifications at Old Point Comfort. Visitors will learn about the history of Indigenous Americans, the first English colonists, seacoast fortifications and casemates, refuge for Contraband and much more.

Manassas National Battlefield

On the fields overlooking Bull Run, a brutal battle between Union and Confederate armies occurred on July 21, 1861, becoming the first of many land battles among the two parties. Over a year later in August 1862, they clashed again in the plains of Manassas in a catastrophic battle, with double the amount of soldiers and quintuple the amount of casualties.

In an effort to humanize the soldiers from these battles, the museum at Manassas displays authentic uniforms worn by real soldiers and artillery used in the war. These fields in Manassas are one of the last native grasslands in the nation, so not only is history being preserved and protected, but so is the environment.

Petersburg National Battlefield

Throughout the beginning of the Civil War, Petersburg had the most freed slaves of any Southern city, making up nearly 35-percent of the entire African-American population at the time. Both freedmen and enslaved men were used as manual labor, making a ten-mile defensive line of trenches around the city.

The Siege of Petersburg took place over nine and a half months, ending with 70,000 casualties and the defeat of Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. The Union’s Gen. Ulysses S. Grant stopped all supply trails, leading to Richmond’s capture on April 3, 1865.
