VER A CAREER that has spanned 56
years and 180 courses, Pete Dye is one of the legendary architects in golf. Casual fans know him for his marquee designs, like TPC Sawgrass, Teeth of the Dog, Whistling Straits and Kiawah Island. Hardcore fanatics relish how Dye takes the driver out of your hands with a variety of pin placements and balance of shots. His stunning visual techniques can make a hole look challenging from the tee box, but have it play easy and vice versa. In the world of golf architects, there’s no one else like Pete Dye. He’s one of only four golf course architects to be elected into the World Golf Hall of Fame. A resident of the Hoosier State for nearly 70 years, golfers will find more Pete Dyedesigned courses here than anywhere else in the world. The Pete Dye Golf Trail was created to showcase the state’s collection of courses available for public play, all conceived by the legendary architect and his wife Alice. The trail unifies destinations from north to south, giving traveling golfers a one-of-a-kind vacation option. Here are the seven courses that make up the renowned trail. Three Tips to Better Prepare
for Your Golf Vacation There’s more to getting prepared for a golf outing than making a tee time BY DAVE BODLE
T
HE GOAL FOR any group plan-
ning an Indiana golf trip is to have fun. It begins with finalizing the courses, whether familiar favorites or new and soon-tobe favorites. Accommodations that fit the group’s budget, where to eat and off-the-course entertainment options are important components to the trip. There are also a few not-soobvious factors that need attention.
VISIT INDIANA GOLF GUIDE 2019

1
Get yourself ready
What immediately comes to mind about getting ready for a golf trip is making sure you’ve packed granola bars, aspirin and some remedies for those sore muscles. However, long before you even begin to pack there are a few things you need to do. During the cold winter months, it’s important to keep moving. “Golf is a unique sport that requires both core strength and core mobility,” said Dr. Philip Blaney, sports medicine specialist at Franciscan Health. “You need to get up and move. If you can, get to the gym during the winter months, work on your back, hamstrings and hip strength and flexibility.” Blaney also said yoga is ideal for both strength and flexibility, saying it’s becoming an important part of conditioning for college athletes he works with. Whether your golf trip follows a long winter layoff or it’s in the middle of the season, you still need to pay attention to your body before travel. Flexibility and nutrition are keys. “For at least two weeks prior to a golf trip, players should do some stretching at least twice
16
a day,” Blaney said. Also, during those two weeks prior to travel, “it’s important golfers keep their hydration and nutritional levels up,” Blaney added. Merely picking up a few bottles of water the morning of your first tee time isn’t adequate. Taking care of your body during the winter or a warm Indiana summer is critical to enjoying your round.
2
Stay on time
Starters can get annoyed if you’re late for a tee time. They’ll do their best to get you on the course, but on a busy day, that’s not going to happen right away. If you’re planning to play 36 holes, tardiness only enhances the problem. The answer to avoiding being lax with your time begins when you’re planning the trip. Do your best to make tee times that fit your vacation mode. If you’d prefer not getting up at 6 a.m., or you tend to hit the snooze button, don’t make an early morning tee time. Know the distance from your accommodations to the course and allow some extra time just in case there’s a delay. You might be on vacation, but the rest of Indiana may be going to work. If your tee time can be impacted by rush hour
VISIT INDIANA GOLF GUIDE 2019
VisitIndianaGolf.com
traffic, allow some extra time. Check the route on Google Maps or Waze on the same day and time before you depart on your trip. Next, know your group. Is there a perpetual latecomer? Do they each need to hit a large bucket of balls on the driving range? How much time is needed to find their putting stroke? Will your foursome want to take advantage of breakfast at the hotel or golf course? The best-laid plans can certainly go wrong and impact your round. Here’s a hint if you’re late arriving to the course. Instead of hurrying to the range and trying to get in as many swings as time allows, stroke some putts. Concentrate on a relaxed stroke and keeping your eye on the ball. It’s a better use of your time.
3
Get your equipment ready
Taking your clubs out of the garage and dusting them off is a good beginning, but it’s just the start of what needs to be done. Wearing out the grips on a golf trip can be a real thing. Perhaps you didn’t replace the grips after a long season and now you’re heading out the door without replacing them. That’s a disaster waiting to happen. Get your clubs re-gripped weeks before your trip. That’s one less thing to worry about.
Don’t forget about your golf shoes. While you’re getting the clubs re-gripped, take time to have the spikes on your shoes replaced. That’s something you can even do yourself. There’s one more thing every recreational golfer needs to pack, your “mudders.” There’s an old saying, “If you don’t like the weather, stick around, it’s going to change.” In other words, even if the sun is shining early, there’s an excellent chance you can get rained on and have a wet pair of shoes for the next round. If, however, you pack a second pair of shoes, your feet will feel pristine and your game may thrive as a result.

The history of this land takes us from the Civil War when the Indianapolis Arsenal supplied munitions for federal troops to the establishment of Fort Benjamin Harrison. Fast-forward to 1995 when Indiana’s request for use of 1,700 acres of the property as a state park and nature preserve was granted. In 1998 Fort Golf Course opened and was ranked third as “Best Affordable New Public Courses.” The course is set in a marvelous wooded area with trees lining most holes, rolling fairways and fairway bunkers and Dye’s signature undulating greens. Nowhere are those features more prevalent than on Hole No. 4, the No. 1 Handicap. Driving accuracy is a must. A short approach shot to the right of the green will kick to the green and avoid the well trapped and out of bounds left.

tarting less than an hour south of Indianapolis and on down to the Ohio River Valley, vacationers will find a land of fields and forests blanketing rolling terrain. Some of that greenery comprises the region’s 59 golf courses. Centrally situated, scenic Southern Indiana is under three hours from St. Louis, five hours from Chicago. Louisville lies just across the Ohio River, while Cincinnati is a short drive to great golf in the southeast region of the state. In Indiana’s southwest corner you’ll find Evansville. You can catch an Evansville Otters baseball game at Bosse Field, a historic stadium built in 1915. Car enthusiasts will have a field day admiring the classic automobiles on display at Dream Car Museum, a nostalgic spot decked out in 1950s memorabilia. Gaming enthusiasts flock to newly reimagined Tropicana Evansville, one of the most popular casinos on the Ohio River. It features two hotels and abounds with dining and bar options. Not far away is Bru Burger Bar, a hot new

restaurant in the renovated Greyhound bus station. Other Ohio River gaming meccas are Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg, Rising Star Casino in Rising Sun and Belterra Casino in Florence, all offering topnotch entertainment and dining. Belterra, the largest casino resort in the state, boasts a Tom Fazio-designed golf course and full-service spa, while Rising Star has the only Scottish Links-style golf course in Southern Indiana. For good eats in Jasper, 25 miles southwest of French Lick, stop by the renowned Schnitzelbank Restaurant for German specialties like sauerbraten and wiener schnitzel, and load up at its
Wunderbar salad, soup and bread bar. On select Saturdays in summer and fall, the Spirit of Jasper scenic train offers “Ride & Dine” excursions catered by Schnitzelbank. Visitors to Jasper also enjoy browsing the shops on Main Street and the area around the courthouse square. For more fun shopping, commune with the past in the nearby Dubois County town of Huntingburg, whose Fourth Street Shopping District has more than two dozen antique and specialty shops and unique eateries in a setting reminiscent of Victorian times. Huntingburg is also home to League Stadium, famous for serving as the movie set for “A League of Their Own”

Castle. The big summer draw is Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari. One of the Midwest’s top amusement parks, it includes shows and rides in a theme park divided into Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween and Fourth of July lands, and a world class water park. Soft drinks, sunscreen and Wi-Fi are always free. The twin towns of French Lick and West Baden, ringed by the hills of the Hoosier National Forest, are famed for two luxury resort hotels that once hosted members of elite society who came for
long stays to take the curative mineral waters from natural springs. Guests today can indulge in world-class spas at the exquisitely restored French Lick Springs Resort and West Baden Springs Hotel. French Lick’s casino, with some 1,100 slots and 40 live-dealer tables, has the largest non-smoking gaming room in the state. Big Splash Adventure Indoor Water Park & Hotel, another lodging option, puts a family spin on resort life. Also in the area is Patoka Lake, a sprawling haven for boating and fishing.
In downtown French Lick, 33 Brick Street restaurant and bar is furnished with autographed jerseys, trophies and other memorabilia celebrating the career of basketball great Larry Bird, a hometown hero. Between French Lick and Paoli, Wilstem Ranch offers elephant and giraffe encounters that include educational demonstrations and chances to feed or groom the animals. The rolling hills of Lawrence County’s scenic Limestone Country, centered around Bedford and Mitchell, is home to Spring Mill State Park. The park’s Pioneer Village, a re-creation of an early 1800s settlement, surrounds a working limestone gristmill.

The 74-room Spring Mill Inn offers an indoor/outdoor pool and a bountiful dinner buffet featuring entrees like meatloaf, fried chicken and chicken-fried steak with creamy gravy. At Bluespring Caverns, just southwest of Bedford, take a guided boat ride on America’s longest underground river.
Bloomington Entertainment & Arts District brims with theaters, art galleries, live music venues, some 100 shops and more than 90 dining options. For hand-crafted artisan beers, kick back at Bloomington Brewing Company’s Lennie’s Restaurant and BBC Brewpub and Upland Brewing Company’s
Family Winery is housed in an 1850s stable and carriage house. In West Baden there are multiple options including the French Lick Winery and Patoka Lake Winery. Grape fans in the Cordyon area head to Quibble Hill, Scout Mountain and Turtle Run wineries. Huber’s Orchard,
Wood Shop Brewery & Brewpub. Farm-to-table restaurants include Farm Bloomington, King Dough and craft distillery Cardinal Spirits, which offers tours and tastings. Wineries in the towns and countryside of Southern Indiana have become major visitor attractions as well. Many, like Monkey Hollow Winery in St. Meinrad, are small farms that welcome visitors to sample the products while drinking in the peaceful vistas of slopes planted with vines. In the history-drenched Ohio River town of Madison, Thomas
Winery & Vineyards in Starlight is a major player in the region’s agritourism, offering tours of its winemaking and distillery facilities, a loft tasting bar and U-pick experiences, plus a cafe, bakery and ice cream shop. Indiana’s largest wine grape producer grows 18 varieties for its varietals and blended wines. Nashville is the entry point for Brown County State Park, Indiana’s largest and most visited state park. Abe Martin Lodge has 84 rooms, and nearby new fully furnished cabins sleeping up to eight. The park, with miles

daes and Green River sodas. A laid-back food and craft beer experience awaits at Upland Brewing Company’s Columbus Pump House, which occupies a 1903 brick building that served as the city’s water works and power station for nearly 50 years. The patio overlooks the rush-
ing East Fork of the White River. Eight miles north of Columbus is Edinburgh Premium Outlets, a lineup of more than 80 stores including Gap, Adidas, Under Armour, Coach, Nike and Ralph Lauren Polo. A different kind of shopping engages visitors in Nashville, where dozens of independently owned shops deal in antiques, collectibles, fine art and hand-crafted items. Show caves are certainly a big tourist draw in southernmost Indiana. Within a short drive from Corydon are Marengo Cave, Squire Boone Caverns and Indiana Caverns. The latter includes a boat ride, while Squire Boone has a zip line course. Just minutes away from Marengo, Cave Country Canoes offers trips on the Blue River for all levels. All three caves afford the opportunity to mine for gemstones and minerals. Southern Indiana is considered the birthplace of the American wine industry because it was in the town of Vevay that a Swiss immigrant founded the country’s first successful commercial winery around 1806; the region’s wine industry began to rebound in the 1960s. Vevay’s Ridge Winery has an open deck that affords dreamy views of the Ohio River. With visions of goblets and grapes dancing in our heads, let’s lift a glass and toast the treasures and pleasures of Southern Indiana.
