T
HE TRADITION OF playing basketball in Indiana goes back for decades, though some old-timers will tell you that basketball was probably played in some form or fashion in Indiana well before Dr. James Naismith officially invented the game in Springfield, Massachusetts back in 1891. While basketball has been played in Indiana for more than 100 years, Hoosiers have also been playing golf for more than a century. After all, once the snow melts, the sun shines and the temperatures rise, it’s time to go outside to combat Old Man Par before Old Man Winter returns.

To give you an idea of the breadth, depth and quality of the golf courses in Indiana, this year we highlight the best 18 golf holes from 18 different public golf courses in the Hoosier State. It’s a Dream 18! From a logistical perspective, most of these golf courses are located fairly close to Interstate 65 (I-65), which travels from southern Indiana through Indianapolis and up to Chicago. THE 18TH HOLE AT SULTAN’S RUN GOLF CLUB JASPER
VISIT INDIANA GOLF GUIDE 2020
9
1
Otter Creek Golf Club (North Course)
Columbus
The opening hole on the North Course is a par-5 where the green is reachable in two shots. Your tee shot will influence your decision to either go for the green in two or lay up short of the small stream, which crosses the fairway about 25 yards short of the putting surface. If your approach is long and left of the green, the greenside bunker complex will grab your golf ball.
2
The Pete Dye Course
French Lick
The 2nd hole is a relatively short par-4 with a slight rightto-left twist to its layout. The most significant part of this hole is the series of “volcano” bunkers that dot the right side of the fairway. If your ball lands in one of the “volcano” bunkers, your rescue shot could easily finish in another one if you are too ambitious.
3
Rock Hollow Golf Club
Peru
The 3rd hole at the Rock Hollow Golf Club is an exciting risk/reward par-5. After hitting a solid tee shot to the fairway, you will be tempted to go for the green in two in order to give yourself an eagle putt. But there’s no room for
10
error on your approach, as water lurks on both sides of the fairway and behind the green. Two bunkers adjacent to the green – front left and back right – add to the degree of difficulty of this hole. Even if your second shot is a layup, you don’t want to push or pull your third shot to the green. At the 3rd hole, if you lose your focus, double bogeys will be more common than birdies.
4
Plum Creek Golf Club
Carmel
One of the highlight holes at Plum Creek is the 4th hole, which measures 423 yards from the championship tees and nearly 400 yards from the tournament and member tees. The hole is special because of its dual fairways – one is straight ahead and the other one veers left. The putting surface is guarded on its right flank by a sentry bunker.
VISIT INDIANA GOLF GUIDE 2020

Bridge is the 5th. The green on this serpentine par-5 can be reached in two, but the presence of a pond to the right of the green will “sink” your chances of a sub-par score if your second shot veers too far right. Play it safe by hitting a mid-iron as a layup and give yourself a birdie putt with a wedge to the green. Side note: The 9th and 18th holes are both par-5 and parallel one another, as they share a huge double green. The clubhouse, built on an adjacent lofty perch, overlooks that double green.
6
Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex (Kampen Course)
West Lafayette
The 6th hole at Kampen is a tough, yet fair, par-4. On the 6th, pars are earned, and there’s never a problem
THE 2ND HOLE AT PETE DYE COURSE FRENCH LICK
Side note: The presence of the Lynnwood Farm barn on the premises of Plum Creek – to the left of the 16th hole – is a reminder of this property’s agricultural roots, a staple of the Hoosier economy and Indiana’s traditional way of life.

accepting a bogey. Your tee shot is struck from an elevated tee. An ideal tee shot will move left to right around the Celery Bog, which means shot placement is important. Usually, the 6th is played into the teeth of the wind, which adds to its degree of difficulty. As you approach the green, steer clear of the water hazard and the bunkers – both of which sit to the right of the green. If your greenside approach veers left of the putting surface, you’ll have to deal with the tall rough.
7
Brickyard Crossing Golf Club
Indianapolis
The 7th hole, the first hole inside the Speedway’s infield, is a par-3 that is played from a perched tee to a raised green. From this tee, there’s a 360-degree attention-getting view of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. From the 7th tee, you can see Gasoline Alley, and you get to travel underneath the speedway track to reach the tee box.
8
The Donald Ross Course
French Lick
This hole has probably not changed too much since the course opened for play in 1916. The most telling evidence is the square-sized shape of the green. Historically, nearly every green was in the shape of a square because it was easier to cut and maintain. On this rightto-left dogleg par-4, make sure you drive it far enough to have a clear view of the green. On your approach to

the green, aim for the back or middle of the putting surface, because there’s a severe false front to this green. When was the last time that you saw a square-sized green?

this hole features a tree-lined border along the right side of the hole and water, specifically Lake Shafer, along the left side of the hole. The putting surface is built on a peninsula that is guarded by two greenside sand bunkers and Lake Shafer to the left and back of the green.
The 2nd hole at the Tippecanoe Golf Club is a classic par-5, which is this course’s “signature hole.” Achieving a strong score on this hole requires focus, attention and respect. From tee to green,

The 10th hole at the Noble Hawk Golf Links is affectionately named “Off and Runnin.’” And, if you can hit a power fade, you will be off and runnin’ as you begin your journey through the back nine. A solid drive at the 10th will leave you with a mid-toshort iron to the green. If you hit the green in regulation, be aware of this green’s gentle slopes. take three shots to reach the putting surface. The tree-lined fairway is rather easy to find from the tee. The second shot is to a more narrow landing area, which leaves a wedge to a big green that is 45 yards from front to back. In reality, two solid shots will reduce this hole to a short par-3 from the fairway.
12
Champions Pointe Golf Club
Henryville
The 12th hole at Champions Pointe is a true three-shot par5. To begin with, your tee shot should be hit in the right-center of the fairway. That gives

you a better angle for your second shot. Two well-struck and well-positioned shots at the 12th will leave you with a short iron to the green. Here, it’s best to aim for the leftcenter of the green since the green angles away from you and to the right. There is also a cluster of bunkers that sit to the right of the green that will catch any off-center approaches to the “dance floor.” Local knowledge helps when playing this hole. If your tee shot is wayward, your chances of securing a par or better will drop quickly.
you go pin-seeking from the tee with a driver, avoid the bunker that is greenside left. It takes more brains than brawn to play this hole.

The Pfau Course at Indiana University

The 14th hole can play anywhere from 268 yards to 459 yards. This picturesque par-4 is the creation of golf course architect Steve Smyers. He has designed a sharp dogleg right with 10 deep-

The 13th is a short par-4 that requires a pin-point drive. The fairway of this right-toleft uphill dogleg is divided by a sand bunker, which means the primary goal is to the left or right of that trap. From the fairway, you have a short, blind shot to an elevated green. If

15
Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex (Ackerman-Allen Course)
West Lafayette
The 15th at the AckermanAllen Golf Course is one of the strongest and longest par-4s in the state of Indiana, as it measures more than 400 yards from four of the five tees. Not surprisingly, as it is
VISIT INDIANA GOLF GUIDE 2020

ranked as the most difficult hole on this golf course. From the tee, straight is great, as you must avoid the seven bunkers to the left and the grove of trees on your right. To reach the green, any shot that drifts to the right may stray into a lateral water hazard or find one of the five bunkers that are short right of the green. For many players, par will usually be secured
with a greenside chip and a putt. Finding this green in regulation is worthy of a fistpump celebration.
16
The Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame
South Bend
Even though the 345-yard par-4 16th hole is the shortest par-4 on the golf course, your
success on this hole depends on your ability to make the correct club choice for your tee shot. Think backwards on this hole. The length of the approach shot that you want into the green will dictate what length that you must hit your tee shot. There’s another wrinkle on this hole: it has a two-tiered green.

THE 17TH HOLE AT PURGATORY GOLF CLUB NOBLESVILLE
17
Purgatory Golf Club
Noblesville
More than 218 acres of land were used to build this golf course, which features more than 130 bunkers. The most pronounced bunkering occurs on the 17th hole, which is the “signature hole” at Purgatory. The 17th hole (named Hell’s Half Acre) is a par-3 with an island green. The putting surface on the 17th is surrounded by two acres of sand. An ace here would be unforgettable, a
16
birdie memorable and a par impressive.
18
Sultan’s Run Golf Club
Jasper
The 18th hole, named after the horse Supreme Sultan, is a left-to-right dogleg par-4 and is a classic finishing hole. Possibly the most dramatic signature hole in the state of Indiana. The tee shot is hit from a high perch to a wide, spacious bunkered fairway in the distance. The driver is your club of choice on the
18th tee. When you strike your uphill approach to the green, don’t swing too much club and airmail the putting surface where a waterfall sits. The pin should always be at the back of the green in order for you to maximize the presence of the waterfall. The view from the back of the 18th green down the fairway will be your final memory of your trek around Supreme Sultan’s former homestead, which is truly one of the marvels of Indiana golf.

HEN IT COMES to collegiate athletics, most teams at most colleges and universities play their home games at an on-campus athletic facility. That provides the proverbial and much-coveted “home-field” or “home-court” advantage. That is especially the case for sports such as football, basketball, baseball, softball,
soccer, tennis, volleyball, lacrosse and rugby. One sport that rarely has an on-campus facility is golf, but in Indiana, four universities truly have a “home course advantage” when visiting teams show up to play. Those schools are the University of Notre Dame, Purdue University, Indiana University and Trine University.

The Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame South Bend
IN SOUTH BEND, you’ll find The Warren Golf
Course, which opened for play in 2000 and is perched on the northern edge of the University of Notre Dame campus. It’s the home course for the men’s and women’s golf teams at Notre Dame. The Warren GC, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, is nestled on 250 acres of woodlands. This property has been designated as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. The par-70 golf course features fescue fairways and a gently rolling terrain. You can also see the famous golden dome on the Notre Dame campus from the course. Coore and Crenshaw were delighted with their work at The Warren. “We wanted an old-fashioned, traditional golf course – one based on subtleties, not special effects,” stated Coore and Crenshaw in a joint statement. They succeeded. The course is a throwback to the classic designs of the early 20th century, when enjoyment of the game of golf was the primary objective of course architecture. According to The Warren Golf Course general manager and head golf professional John Foster, special arrangements are made for golfers when Notre Dame has home football games. “On game days, we have a shotgun start on Saturday mornings and then we close the course during the actual game,” said Foster. “But, if you stand on the 5th tee, you can see the game on the Jumbotron inside the stadium. You can also see the Jumbotron on the 12th and 13th holes.” Golfweek has ranked The Warren as Indiana’s sixth-best golf course and the 12th best collegiate golf course in the United States. The Warren GC received the greatest endorsement when the United States Golf Association decided to host the 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links and the 2019 U.S. Senior Open at the Warren Golf Course. The Warren Golf Course was the first collegiate golf course to host the U.S. Senior Open.

Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex: Ackerman-Allen & Kampen West Lafayette
women’s golf teams at Purdue University are blessed with not one but two nationally respected golf courses – located at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The two courses are Ackerman-Allen and Kampen. The website for this golf complex provides a succinct summary of what awaits all golfers: “36 Holes, 2 Courses, 1 Unforgettable Experience.” “It’s not often that you get to play golf at a university and get to play two of the best courses in the state of Indiana. Not only that, but the two are Pete Dye-designed courses,” said head golf professional Daniel Ross. “What is so unique about the Kampen Course and Ackerman-Allen Course is that each course is very different from the other. Both courses are kept in phenomenal shape.” Opened in 1934, the Ackerman-Allen Course (first called the South Course) was originally designed by Bill Diddle. This golf course hosted the 1961 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship (which Purdue won) and Jack Nicklaus, playing for The Ohio State Universi-

ty, was the individual medalist. Fast forward to 2015-2016, at which time Pete Dye redesigned the 18-hole, par-72 layout. Today, the greens, fairways and tees feature bent grass. This course is a memory maker featuring rolling hills, tree-lined fairways, white sand bunkers and wide collection areas around the greens. During the redesign, two new holes were created and the championship tees were extended from 6,400 yards to 7,500 yards. “Ackerman-Allen is a parkland-style course,” added Ross. “As for Ackerman-Allen, Pete Dye took an already good golf course and turned it into an incredibly fun and truly enjoyable golf course.” The course is named in honor of Jim, Lois and Sam Ackerman for their support of Purdue University athletics. The Kampen Course (first called the North Course) has hosted the 2000 Men’s Big Ten Championship, 2003 Women’s NCAA Championship, 2004 Indiana Open, 2005 Women’s Western Amateur, and the 2008 Men’s NCAA Championship. When Dye started the redesign efforts on the Kampen Course in 1996, he had two main goals: create a course that would challenge and excite top collegiate golfers and create an atmosphere of learning for Purdue’s
students. With that in mind, Dye started working alongside course superintendent Jim Scott and 32 Purdue students affiliated with the departments of forestry, entomology, water quality testing and agronomy. One of their projects was to build a water reclamation project. Thankfully, all the water now used on the course is recycled. The Kampen Course is a links-style layout with vast sand bunkers, wellplaced waste bunkers, man-made wetlands and a natural celery bog. “Kampen is a links-style course,” noted Ross. “It has always been a strong golf course. Now, the course is in great condition and the greens are very consistent. People walk off Kampen praising the consistency of the greens.” The Kampen Course is named in honor of Emerson Kampen and his support of Purdue University athletics. A statue of Kampen overlooks the first tee. “As a person who calls Indiana home, I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to build two of the finest university golf courses in the country at Purdue,” said Dye. As you would expect, both the AckermanAllen and Kampen Courses are now two of the seven golf courses that are part of Indiana’s Pete Dye Golf Trail. VISIT INDIANA GOLF GUIDE 2020

The Pfau Course at Indiana University Bloomington
THANKS TO A very generous gift from Ned
and Sue Pfau, the golf program at Indiana University is getting ready to enjoy a muchappreciated “shot in the arm.” The Indiana University Championship Golf Course, which opened in 1957, is getting ready to re-open after a major re-design by highly acclaimed golf course architect Steve Smyers. To honor and recognize the support from Ned and Sue Pfau, the new golf course will be officially known as The Pfau Course at Indiana University. The financial gift from the Pfaus was part of the Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign for Athletics. The planned re-open date will be the spring of 2020, but the exact date depends on the grow-in. This 18-hole golf course will feature a new routing and layout, which may make it the envy of the Big Ten Conference, if not all of collegiate golf. Weather permitting, the golf course will be open year-round. Some of the major improvements on the golf course will be target greens on the driving range, 36-mat teeing stations, and 14-20 grass teeing stations. Another plus is the driving range will be lighted, and the venue will also feature a nine-hole executive course. Indiana University men’s golf coach Mike Mayer is thrilled about this new golf course. “At the beginning of the process, my expectations were high, and they have been exceeded,” admitted Mayer. “This course has the potential to not only be one of the best collegiate golf courses in the country, but one of the best golf courses in the country as a whole. Every time I visit this golf course, it takes my breath away.” In late September 2019, Mayer reported that the new bent grass greens were already in perfect condition. The new fairways have zoysia grass, which will thrive in the summer heat, and blue grass is growing in the rough. Mayer is optimistic that having a true championshipcaliber golf course will make IU an attrac-
22
tive destination for the best high school golf prospects in the country. “Having access to this golf course will be a game-changer in recruiting,” admitted Mayer. Does this mean that Indiana University will be the next powerhouse in men’s and women’s collegiate golf? Only time will tell. If Indiana’s men’s or women’s teams do win a national title in the coming years, the university may want to order two additional championship rings for Ned and Sue Pfau.
Zollner Golf Course Angola
ONE OF THE biggest perks of being
on the men’s or women’s golf team at Trine University is that the commute to golf practice is quick, since there’s an 18-hole golf course located on campus. It’s the Zollner Golf Course. If a golf course’s reputation is based on which tournaments and events it hosts, then the Zollner Golf Course deserves top-billing, as it hosted the NAIA Men’s National Tournament in 1987, 1990 and 1992, hosted the Pepsi Junior Tour for nine years and was the site of the 2012 NCAA Division III Women’s Golf National Championship. The Zollner Golf Course has also been the site for the Indiana PGA Assistant Championships, Indiana PGA Junior Age Group Championships and sectional Indiana State Open Qualifying. The Zollner Golf Course has been the home for the Trine University’s men’s and women’s golf teams since the 1970s. The course was actually established in 1971 as a gift from Trine University’s Board of Trustees. In the last 25 years, the men’s golf team has won 16 titles in two conferences, 15 state and regional championships and finished as high as 10th on two occasions at the NAIA national tournament. During that same time span, the women’s team at Trine University won the NAIA national championship in 1997

and had four top-five finishes in the NAIA national tournament between 1996 and 2000. Nationally, Trine now competes at the NCAA Division III level. According to Trine University women’s golf coach Noah Warren, this course has everything that a university will ever need for its collegiate golf program -- 18 holes, two putting greens, a renovated driving range and a full golf shop/banquet room. Zollner also has an indoor golf lab that includes two simulators
and challenge.” According to Busscher, the “signature hole” at Zollner is the 5th hole. Nicknamed “Big Bertha,” the 5th hole is a long par-4 that turns left. From the outset, you have a scenic downhill tee shot. Your approach shot is to a green which is tucked along the edge of the forest that borders part of the course. The 5th hole may be the “signature hole,” but Busscher has a favorite hole at Zollner. “My favorite hole is the 10th,” noted Busscher. “It’s a long par-5 that borders our

and a large putting green with multiple cups. “It’s such a great venue for our golf program, as it’s literally just footsteps from the student housing,” said Warren. Not only is this course conveniently located for the golf team, but it’s a wonderful venue to play golf, as it is beautifully landscaped with undulating fairways, a hilly terrain and scenic views. Warren and Zollner’s Director of Golf Operations Jonathan Busscher agree with that assessment. “It’s a very fun course that never gets old or boring to the golfers,” added Warren. “With its many elevation changes, Zollner is truly a thinking player’s golf course,” noted Busscher. “Strategically placed bunkers and reconfigured fairways offer even more interest
athletic fields. You can see and hear the Trine University’s teams practicing at times, which gives the hole a unique collegiate feel.” Every Friday night, from late May until late August, the Zollner Golf Course is the host of “Birdies, Brews and BBQ” at this course’s own version of the 19th Hole. It’s called Club Z. At “Birdies, Brews, and BBQ,” there’s live music on the patio along with a menu which includes a choice of ribs, chicken or a hamburger with unlimited sides and a full bar. Outdoor games and prizes also will be available at this family-friendly event. In the event of bad weather, the live music and BBQ will move inside Club Z. Once the golf season starts in the spring, play continues until mid to late November. VISIT INDIANA GOLF GUIDE 2020

GOLF IN SOUTH
BEND One of Indiana’s premier golf destinations is calling your name. Around South Bend you’ll find a collection of courses that will both challenge your game and keep you coming back for more. They’ll stun you with natural beauty yet offer tremendous value while providing moments that keep your group talking for years to come. Playing golf here means choosing from championship-level options. The Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame hosted the 2019 U.S. Senior Open, which crowned Steve Stricker as champion. Blackthorn Golf Club is every year a rite of passage for those making their way to the LPGA Tour. It also means municipal courses that punch above their weight. Elbel Park and Erskine Park are either steeped in natural beauty, history or both. All this in one destination, and that’s without mentioning the entertainment and dining available when your round is over. Now is the time to plan your 2020 golf trip to The Bend. After all…
WARREN GOLF COURSE » Home to the Notre Dame men’s and women’s golf teams, Warren hosted the 2019 U.S. Senior Open. The Coore + Crenshaw design sprawls over 250 acres of expertly preserved wildlife habitat and views of the iconic Golden Dome.

ELBEL PARK GOLF COURSE
Elbel Park
» Few courses match Elbel’s setting, which prominently features the Mud Lake wetlands and incorporates vast wildlife habitat. The surroundings are beautiful and the layout challenging as it stretches to nearly 6,900 yards from the championship tees.
ERSKINE PARK GOLF COURSE » Erskine Park is one of the most historic courses in South Bend and once hosted Arnold Palmer for an exhibition. Its renovated clubhouse offers a modern touch. Long par 3s and a stout, 600-plus yard par 5 are among the highlights. Erskine Park
BLACKTHORN GOLF CLUB » Host of the Four Winds Invitational on the LPGA Symetra Tour, Blackthorn joins the likes of Erin Hills as a Michael Hurdzan design. Prairie grasses, wetlands and ponds dot the rolling property with lush fairways and pristine greens.

Visitors can enjoy the Las Vegas-style casino floor that houses 2,200 slots and table games or the largest poker room in the Indianapolis metro area. Grand Racing’s centerpiece is its thoroughbred and quarter horse racing track, which includes expansive stadium seating and a simulcast center to place bets of all sizes. Dining options at the complex include the Grand
Buffet (which specializes in prime rib and fresh seafood), Center Cut (a relaxing steakhouse that serves farm-fresh beef) and Winner’s Circle Brewpub (where you can sample craft beer and watch simulcast racing). Seeking some thirstquenching craft beers after your round? Indiana is home to some of the nation’s premier brew pubs and craft distilleries. Located in West Lafayette across the Wabash River from the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, People’s Brewery serves local favorites like the Boiler Gold American Golden Ale along with seasonal special-

ties like the People’s Pilsner in the heart of summer. After 18 holes at Carmel’s Plum Creek, head to Grand Junction Brewing Company in nearby Westfield. Located in an old lumber company building, this two-tiered taproom allows guests to play retro arcade games and sample Indiana beers on guest taps. Also nearby is the Upland Carmel Tap House, a spacious social taproom located near the Monon Trail. The rotating taps serve year-round favorites like the Dragonfly IPA or Bad Elmer’s Porter in addition to seasonal specialties like the summertime Tropical Vortex IPA. Explore the galleries and canal walk of the charming Broad Ripple Village before enjoying a pint at Broad Ripple Brewpub—Indianapolis’ oldest. Modeled after quaint English pubs, this lo-
cal favorite offers water views and hearty fare like cheese crocks to pair with your inhouse beer. For a broader sampling of the city’s craft beer options, consider a ride on the Indy Brew Bus. Itineraries include three samples at four local breweries, and passengers are provided a passport to grade each stop. Tours can depart from Indianapolis, Greenfield, Broad Ripple or Carmel. Does your golf group prefer wine? Tastings in downtown Indianapolis houses over 200 wine taps that serve customizable pours from California, Europe, South Africa and more with the swipe of a card. Groups can also enjoy a selection of flatbreads and charcuterie boards. For a glass of whiskey or craft cocktail, visit Hotel Tango Distillery—the city’s first
since Prohibition—in the Fountain Square neighborhood. Relax in a cozy tasting space that features a stone fireplace and sunny patio to enjoy house-made vodka, rum, gin, bourbon, rye whiskey and liquor in addition to craft cocktails. Home to several professional sports teams and the headquarters of the NCAA, Indianapolis also offers additional sports action to fill your evening. Recline on the grassy outfield of Victory Field (which hosts the AAA Indianapolis Indians baseball team and offers peerless views of the skyline), cheer for the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium or take in a thrilling basketball game at Bankers Life Fieldhouse (home of the NBA Indiana Pacers and WNBA Indiana Fever). Held every May, the city’s signature sporting

event is the Indianapolis 500, but you can learn about Indiana’s racing heritage year-round at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Museum. The complex houses the world’s largest collection of race cars and antique vehicles, and a narrated bus ride can include visits to the media center, Pagoda, victory platform and Gasoline Alley Suite. Live entertainment options also abound in Central Indiana. The Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts—located in Pete Dye’s hometown of Carmel—is inspired by the concert halls of Vienna and hosts symphonies, musicals and pop acts throughout the year. Before or after the show, enjoy dinner or a drink in the surrounding Carmel City Center, which houses restaurants and bars in a layout modeled after communal European city squares.

After a round at Tippecanoe Country Club, book a cruise on the Madam Carroll—the largest registered boat in the state of Indiana. Excursions on Lake Freeman can include live music, cocktails and incredible sunset views. The Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville is a general seating outdoor venue that welcomes rock and country groups throughout the summer months, while indoor concert experiences await at historic venues like the Vogue in Broad Ripple
Village and the Old National Centre downtown. Foodies and art-lovers will want to spend time in Indianapolis’ Massachusetts Avenue neighborhood—the city’s cosmopolitan hub that is lined with galleries, bookstores and nightclubs for every taste. A preserved 1894 German social hall with extensive outdoor seating and event space, the Rathskeller Biergarten is the perfect place to sip a hefeweizen and listen to an authentic oom-pah band, and you can

The history of this land takes us from the Civil War when the Indianapolis Arsenal supplied munitions for federal troops to the establishment of Fort Benjamin Harrison. Fast forward to 1995, when Indiana’s request for use of 1,700 acres of the property as a state park and nature preserve was granted. In 1998, the Fort Golf Course opened and has since won several awards, including Best Layout by Golf Advisor in 2018 The course is set in a marvelous wooded area with trees lining most holes, rolling fairways and fairway bunkers and Dye’s signature undulating greens. Nowhere are those features more prevalent than on Hole No. 4, the No. 1 handicap. Driving accuracy is a must. A short approach shot to the right of the green will kick to the green and avoid the well trapped and out of bounds left.

Sampling SOUTHERN INDIANA Before, during or after your golf adventure, discover other diversions the state’s southern tier has to offer
S
OUTHERN INDIANA
makes for not only a great golf vacation but a great vacation, period. In the region that stretches south of Indianapolis to the Ohio River, you won’t have trouble finding something to fill your days and nights. Whether it’s outdoor recreation, casino games, sightseeing or checking out tempting food and drink establishments, the options are endless. Indiana claims some of the Midwest’s best state parks, and the hilly southern region offers a few that are real jewels. Brown County State Park, the largest state park, is located near Nashville, an hour from Indianapolis. Known as a fall foliage mecca, it has two lakes, a saddle barn, and hiking and mountain biking trails that wind through ravines and across streams. Your group can dine and overnight in the 84-room Abe Martin Lodge, and there are cabins that accommodate up to eight. McCormick’s Creek State Park, northwest of Bloomington, also is a land of ravines and features

an outdoor swimming pool at the 76-room Canyon Inn. Deep in southernmost Indiana, Lincoln State Park has a lake with boats for hire and cabins that sleep up to six; its amphitheater stages concerts in summer. The 1,500seat Lincoln Amphitheatre boasts a full slate of concerts from May to September. Southern Indiana is honeycombed with caves, and several are major attractions that offer tours through the glistening subterranean chambers. At Bluespring Caverns, just southwest of Bedford, take a guided boat ride on America’s longest
underground river. Farther south are Marengo Cave, Squire Boone Caverns and Indiana Caverns, all a short drive from Corydon. The Indiana Caverns tour includes a pontoon cruise. When in cave country, plan for lunch or dinner at Overlook Restaurant in Leavenworth. Crowning a bluff, it offers panoramic views of the Ohio River in multiple directions. If your golf travels take you to Evansville, the major population center in southwestern Indiana, rest assured there’s plenty to see and do. The Dream Car Museum, filled with 1950s nostalgia,

offers one of the Midwest’s most extensive collections of exotic and vintage cars. Moored downtown on the Ohio River is the USS LST 325, the last fully operational World War II Landing Ship Tank. It landed on Normandy’s Omaha Beach on D-Day and went on to serve in the Pacific theater and Korean War. Not far away, gaming action awaits at Tropicana Evansville Resort; check out the casino’s classy Piano Bar at Cavanaugh’s, an upscale nightclub, or one of five restaurants, including the Cajun-themed Chef Subra’s Recipes. Nearby at Bru Burger Bar, great hamburgers and craft beers are served up in a former Greyhound bus station. In summer, take in an Evansville Otters
minor league baseball game at historic Bosse Field. The historic Wabash River town of Vincennes abounds with attractions, including the Indiana Military Museum, one of most comprehensive of its kind in the country. In this treasure trove of artifacts, exhibits of weapons, uniforms, vehicles and aircraft tell the stories of American soldiers from the Civil War up to the current Middle East conflicts. On Main Street in Indiana’s oldest city, Vincennes Brewing Company is a cozy,
brick-walled spot for pairing small-plate menu items with small-batch, made-in-house beers (like Brewsville Blonde, Chocolate Brown Stout and Kinda Light Cream Ale) or selections from around the Midwest and beyond. In the upstairs bar, try your hand at darts and catch sports action on the three big-screen TVs. 20th century grandeur. Many who spend the day on one of French Lick Springs’ golf courses choose to unwind at night in the French Lick Casino, a 24-hour, Vegasstyle operation boasting 1,000 slot machines, 37 live-dealer tables and the baseballthemed Casino Park Grill. New on the property is the Valley Sports Bar, a rustic and wood-paneled lounge where you can enjoy craft cocktails and live sports after placing your bet at the casino’s new sports betting facilities. In downtown French Lick, 33 Brick Street restaurant and bar is furnished with autographed jerseys, trophies and other memorabilia celebrating the career of basketball great Larry Bird, a hometown hero. The French Lick area also is home to Patoka Lake Winery and French Lick Winery, which
both offer tours and tastings. The Uplands Wine Trail, which consists of nine wineries across south-central Indiana, is a great way to see the winemaking process and sample exceptional vintages. Stops on the trail can include Oliver Winery, Winzerwald Winery and Turtle Run Winery. One of the mostvisited wineries on the trail is
Huber’s Orchard and Winery in Starlight, which offers tours and has an inviting loft where you can sample not only the wines but brandy, vodka, gin and whiskey from their Starlight Distillery. The Huber complex, a seventhgeneration family enterprise, also includes a farm market bakery, cafe, and an ice cream and cheese shop.

This American-style links design features bent grass greens, rolling fairways, and glittering lakes. In 2018, Golfweek ranked Chariot Run Indiana’s No. 5 Best Course You Can Play. In addition to Golfweek, the course has consistently received awards and accolades since 2014 from Golf Advisor, Readers’ Choice Awards “Gaming and Destinations,” and others. You’ll know how you’re hitting the ball when you reach the No. 1 Handicap, Hole No. 7. Lining the right side of this Par 4 is water, but avoid the trap on the left side of the fairway. Your second shot is slightly uphill. Evade the bunker on the right and in true links style, land short of the green. Visit online and take the full course tour. The Double Eagle Bar & Grill serves great food at affordable prices.

Founded in 1946, Old Capital originally featured nine holes and sand greens that required the last player in the group to smooth the sand. Grass greens were installed in 1957 and in 1995, nine additional holes were added, making it a Par 72 championship course. Continuing upgrades to the layout and facilities make it a favorite of Southern Indiana golfers and visitors. Elevation changes, a creek winding throughout the course and abundant trees each offer challenges, but plenty of scenic pleasure. Hole No. 4, the No. 1 handicap for men and women, provides the hardest fairway to hit. Approaches from the left bring green side water into play. Even the green is a challenge with slippery right side hole locations sloping toward the water.
