Expand Your Cultural Horizons ON MY MIND
Iconsider myself a man of culture.
I eat at the finest hot dog joints, drink the coldest root beers and contemplate the deepest thoughts (such as “why can’t I lose weight?”) while doing so.
Often, these cultural activities unfold when I’m on a trip, which, judging by recent statistics, has become a fashionable trend for modern travelers.
According to Skyscanner’s 2024 travel trends report, cultural exploration is more of a priority than ever. Travelers are taking more journeys to visit their favorite artists, seeking out the best food experiences and are making cultural immersion and authentic connections a top priority.
This issue of Leisure Group Travel , the Arts and Culture edition, is a guidepost for those wanderers.
The LGT team explores art-themed road trips in the Northeast, pays a visit to popular festivals in the South and seeks out some of the best Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes in the Midwest.
Our hefty museum guide profiles a slew of the finest museums from across the country, from the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Texas to the Salem Witch Museum in Massachusetts.
Also, with the upcoming America 250 celebration around the corner in 2026, LGT unearths what communities are planning for the largest and most inclusive anniversary observance in the nation’s history.
It’s been said culture is the widening of the mind and the spirit, so join us with this month’s LGT and expand your horizons.

What’s the Attraction to Cultural Festivals?
Sue Arko, a leading industry expert and tour operator, explains, “I always enjoy adding festivals to my tour itineraries for a variety of reasons. Most times, festivals are inexpensive and add value to my tour of a destination.”
They also provide large venues and spaces perfect for groups to gather comfortably. In special instances, and with the right expert on your side, attendees have unique opportunities to glimpse where the magic begins.
“Often,” Sue reveals, “I can work with the event organizer to provide a behind-the-scenes look at the festival. This is something that people attending on their own are not able to do.” This unparalleled way to experience something already thrilling is the difference between special and extraordinary. Sue acknowledges, “Festivals offer me the opportunity to partner with organizers to attract and work with and discover new niche groups.”

America at 250
The largest and most inclusive anniversary observance in the nation’s history will have a major impact on tourism • By Randy Mink
Group travel organizers, state and local tourism bureaus, and merchandisers of all stripes are hoping to reap big rewards in 2026, when
the United States will be celebrating the 250th anniversary, or semiquincentennial, of the Declaration of Independence.
The red-letter day will be July 4, the day our nation’s groundbreaking document was signed, but commemorative events will be taking place in the months before and after. America250, the official non-partisan entity charged by Congress with

planning the anniversary, is spearheaded by the congressionally appointed U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission.
Many are already comparing America250 celebrations to the country’s bicentennial bash in 1976, a star-spangled year that, for those old enough to remember, evokes memories bathed in red, white and blue. There were sculptures and monuments created for the occasion, special museum exhibitions, historical reenactments, USA-branded keepsakes, parades, and other festivities in towns big and small. Existing festivals took on patriotic and Revolutionary themes.
Former U.S. Treasurer Rosie Rios, who heads America250 as chair of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, fondly recalls observing bicentennial fetes as an
11-year-old in Northern California, where she grew up with eight siblings raised by a single mother, an immigrant from Mexico. She watched sailing ships gather in Boston and New York harbors on her family’s black-and-white television, visited the national Freedom Train exhibit when it stopped in Oakland and witnessed the Fourth of July fireworks.
“I remember feeling a strong love of country during the bicentennial in 1976,” Rios said. “I want my kids— and all Americans—to experience that same feeling for the upcoming semiquincentennial.”
So far, 43 U.S. states and territories have established a 250 commission to coordinate festivities in their respective jurisdictions. Much of the focus in 2026
will be on the Eastern Seaboard, where colonial America had its beginnings.
Sharing Ideas
In March 2024, more than 450 attendees from 34 states and more than 50 Virginia localities met to share ideas at Colonial Williamsburg for the second annual “A Common Cause to All” conference. Hosted by the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission (VA250) and Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, it offered inspiration and networking opportunities for the educators, historical institutions, and political and civic leaders who gathered. A theme running throughout the forum was how the 250 commemoration can bring together and unite Americans, much as the Bicentennial did in 1976. Observance of the milestone can also increase interest in American history for all ages, but particularly for children, as many speakers emphasized. Sessions focused on teacher resources, digital content, multi-state collaboration, Gen Z engagement, democracy in polarizing times, and engaging diverse and underserved communities.
“Once again, we come together in common cause to continue building collaborative programming and events to commemorate our nation’s semiquincentennial,” said Carly Fiorina, board chair of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. “We are committed to educating our fellow Americans about the entirety of the complex but nevertheless inspiring story of our nation’s founding, engaging with every community and ultimately inspiring our fellow citizens to continue the work to form a more perfect union.”

AMERICA AT 250
THE BIRTHPLACE OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE
Halifax, NC
Once upon a time, in the heart of North Carolina, there was a place where history whispered through the streets and where the spirit of independence was born. That place was Halifax County, and its gem, Historic Halifax, is a portal to a different era. The “Birthplace of American Independence” has embarked on an extraordinary journey through time, a two-year-long celebration of America’s 250th year! The State of North Carolina and the County of Halifax are hosting a revolutionary celebration!
Make plans now to walk the footpaths and visit centuries-old buildings that stand as a living testament to the courage of those who once gathered here. It was in this very place, on April 12, 1776, that the Halifax Resolves were adopted—an audacious call for complete independence from Great Britain. This document paved the way for America’s declaration of independence and left an indelible mark on the nation’s history. Special tours, events, and reenactments will be staged throughout the two years leading to the Grand Celebration of our Nation’s Independence in July 2026.
On August 1, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was read in North Carolina for the first time at the Courthouse Site in Historic Halifax. Make plans to attend Independence Comes to NC on August 1 at 7:00 pm for a reenactment of the historic moment!
While in Halifax, stroll down King Street and enjoy farm-to-table dining at The Hen & The Hog. This Halifax eatery supports local farmers, and flavors change with the season. Two Doors Down offers a lighter fare, and The Trophy Room is a local pub with a “wild” atmosphere. Plan to shop in a multi-merchant venue, The Bass House, for locally made products.

six years in the making, the six-part, 12-hour series will look at the fight for America’s independence and the birth of the United States.
America Waves
Rios is helming the America Waves campaign, which will encourage everyone to pause their personal celebrations on Independence Day in 2026 at 2:50 p.m. and collectively wave their American flags. Also on that day, a time capsule containing memorabilia from all 50 states will be buried at Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
Leading America250 efforts in
New England, Masschusetts held a weekend-long event honoring the semiquincentennial anniversary of the Boston Tea Party in December 2023. During that monumental event leading up to the Revolution, colonists protested taxes imposed by the British by destroying 92,000 pounds of London’s East India Company tea on December 16, 1773. Re-enactments in Boston were staged at Faneuil Hall, Old South Meeting House, Boston’s Downtown Crossing and the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum.
In Yorktown, Virginia from November 7-10, 2024, a similar re-enactment will commemorate the Yorktown Tea Party, a
less famous cousin of the Boston protest. On November 7, 1774, rebellious colonists stormed the waterfront, climbed aboard the ship Virginia and emptied two half chests of tea into the York River. Similar protests against British taxation and lack of colonial representation in Parliament occurred in other colonies as well.
“It’s crucial to remember that the Boston Tea Party was not an isolated incident,” said Michael Steen, director of education of the Watermen’s Museum and chair of the Yorktown Tea Party 250th Anniversary Planning Committee.
As one of the three points in Virginia’s Historic Triangle, Yorktown— America will look to the past while planning for the future in 2026.

along with Williamsburg and Jamestown—promises to be a focus of VA250 celebrations for the next two years. Perennially popular with group tours, it is home to the highly regarded American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown Settlement, two other premier living history museums, also will appear in many Virginia itineraries, as will Historic Jamestowne museum and archaeological excavation site and Yorktown Battlefield, a National Park Service unit.
Multiple Virginia towns and historical attractions this fall will observe the Lafayette Grand Tour 200th Anniversary, which commemorates the 1824-1825 U.S. tour made by France’s Major General Marquis de Lafayette on his return to the country for which he helped gain independence. He was feted in 24 states with parades, balls and other festivities. Lafayette bicentennial events will take place in Fredericksburg, Yorktown, Loudoun County, Charlottesville (Monticello), Fairfax County (Mount Vernon) and other locations. The Fredericksburg Area Museum just unveiled the exhibition Lafayette’s World: Revolutionary Ideals and the Limits of Freedom.
A Fleet of Tall Ships
In June of 2026, Sail250 Virginia will feature an international fleet of tall ships and military vessels in Norfolk and other ports in the Hampton Roads and Chesapeake Bay region. Offering free visits to the public, the fleet also will sail into Boston, New York, Baltimore and New Orleans.
A signature VA250 exhibition will run from March 22, 2025 to January 4, 2026 at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in Richmond. Titled Give Me Liberty: Virginia and the Forging of a Nation, it intends to inspire appreciation for the actions of
iconic and ordinary individuals who brought about a model of democratic government. The opening coincides with the 250th anniversary of Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech. The spellbinder, to
be reenacted at St. John’s Church on March 23, 2025, galvanized the revolutionary spirit.
Other upcoming exhibitions at the museum include Free Black People in Virginia (June 14, 2025 to July 5, 2026), a

look at how free black Virginians achieved their freedom, fought for civil rights and persevered within a legal system that recognized them as free but not equal. We the People (March 14, 2026 to January 3, 2027) will spotlight those who have made Virginia the place it is and the impact of the immigrant experience throughout the Commonwealth’s history.
The small town of Halifax, which claims the title “Birthplace of American Independence,” is the focal point for North Carolina’s America250 observances. Its two-year celebration kicked off in April at Halifax State Historic Site, which commemorates
the Halifax Resolves, a document generally considered the first official act of any colony to sever ties from Great Britain. Created by North Carolina’s Fourth Provincial Congress in Halifax, it empowered North Carolina representatives to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia to vote for independence and urged the other 12 colonies to follow suit.
In anticipation of America250 celebrations, Princess Cruises is offering a “Historic America” cruisetour in 2025 that combines a seven-night land tour with overnight stays in Washington D.C., Williamsburg, Staunton, Gettysburg and
Philadelphia prior to boarding a sevenday Canada/New England cruise on the Enchanted Princess roundtrip from New York City. Departure dates are August 16, 23, 30; September 6, 13, 20, 27; and October 4, 11 and 18, 2025. Rates start at $4,529 per person.
Land highlights on the cruisetour include Washington, D.C. monuments and museums, Arlington National Cemetery, George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, Jamestown Settlement and a full day in Colonial Williamsburg. Ports of call on the cruise are Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Portland, Maine; and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

America’s 250th: A Historic Opportunity for Travel & Exploration
This anniversary is a chance to
reflect on the past and look toward the future
•
By Rosie Rios
In two short years, our nation will mark 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence – a remarkable milestone built on the ideals of freedom, justice, democracy, and equality.
While two years may feel like an eternity, the planning for the 250th commemoration is already well underway.
This anniversary, 250 years in the making, is about so much more than just a date in the history books – it’s a historic opportunity for all Americans to pause, reflect on our past, and envision our shared future.
It’s a chance to explore.
To rediscover what being an American means to each of us.
To encourage our children to experience history outside of the classroom.
And to learn something new, whether it’s in our own backyards or halfway across the country.
Already, education and exploration are at the heart of the national effort to celebrate the 250th through initiatives like America’s Field Trip, a nationwide scholastic contest inviting students to reflect on what America means to them, with awardees receiving behindthe-scenes experiences at iconic American historical and cultural sites. Beginning this July, the first cohort of students will begin embarking on trips across the country, experiencing unforgettable sites like the Statue of Liberty, Yellowstone National Park, and Fort Point for the very first time. The contest will start again in the Fall, and continue to expand for more students and with new experiences in the leadup to 2026.
But America’s Field Trip is just the start. Museums and historic institutions across the country have already
begun planning their programming and sharing resources. Businesses large and small are eagerly getting involved, and plans from the federal to the state and local level are well underway to ensure that this is the largest and most inclusive commemoration in American history. This effort goes well beyond well-known landmarks and the 13 original colonies, including countless lesser-known historical sites in every corner of the country. From Fairbanks to Philadelphia, every city, every state, every territory, and every American has a story to share – and there’s never been a better opportunity to share it.
And while there’s no question that we live in divisive times, it’s precisely because of these challenges that an effort like this is so needed and welcome. This is an anniversary for all Americans – a chance for us to take a step back and to learn from each other and our history – the tragedy, the triumph, and the untold stories in between.
Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege to crisscross the country – from Milwaukee to Los Angeles, New York City to Montevallo and so many cities in between – speaking with business and civic leaders, nonprofits, historians, and community organizations about the upcoming 250th. And the message I’ve heard is loud and clear – we’re ready to meet this moment, together.
I will never forget the awe and wonder of experiencing the Bicentennial as a child in 1976. I still have my Bicentennial quarter and will always remember the sights and sounds of the Freedom Train, and the feeling that I could accomplish anything. As we inch closer to July 4th, 2026, my goal is to capture that same feeling for millions of Americans, and for us all to feel that this is the land of opportunity all over again.
Rosie Rios is Chair of America250, the official nonpartisan entity charged by Congress with planning the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. America250 is a nonpartisan initiative working to engage every American in commemorating and celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The mission of the Museum is to be the voice of the innocent victims of the witchhunt of 1692 while also bringing awareness to the root cause of witch-hunts and how
they continue to impact our society today. Two presentations help illuminate these points, focusing on the events of 1692, and on European witch trials and how the image of the witch has evolved throughout history. Spend a day in Salem. The memories of your visit will resonate for many years to come.

MISSISSIPPI MUSEUM OF ART
Jackson, MS
The Mississippi Museum of Art is excited to announce the upcoming exhibition, Of Salt and Spirit: Black Quilters in the American South on view from November 16, 2024 – April 13, 2025. Over the past 20 years, MMA has amassed one of the largest quilt collections in the American South. Of Salt and Spirit will feature over 40 handmade quilts by Black southern artists, quilters’ portraits, and related objects to emphasize the importance of Mississippi and the broader South as foundational sites of knowledge production and artistic development.
Of Salt and Spirit features quilts from the MMA collection and several collected by American photographer Roland L. Freeman on his travels, recently acquired by MMA in 2022. Curator Dr. Sharbreon Plummer, combines thorough research, innovative interpretation, and community engagement to form a cohesive, experiential study of American Art. The exhibition provides new scholarship on the cultural impact of quilts, not only highlighting the craft and its intergenerational impact but dispelling harmful narratives that have been associated with Black southern quilters for decades. This exhibition is made possible through the support of Henry Luce Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Art Dealers Association Foundation of America, and Visit Jackson. (www.msmuseumart.org)

From the geometric wonder of the Robie House to the organic masterpiece of Samara, these architectural gems showcase Wright’s mastery of form and function.
DANA-THOMAS HOUSE
Springfield, Illinois
The Dana Thomas House is an architectural spectacle. The house was built between the years of 1902 and 1904 for Susan Lawrence Dana. The house serves as a classic example of the Wright Prairie School style of architecture.
The collection encompasses more than 100 distinctive furniture pieces and 450 art glass windows, doors, and light fixtures all crafted by Wright himself. Today, it is a historic site and museum, offering guided tours exploring Wright’s architecture and the life of Susan Lawrence Dana.
FREDERICK C. ROBIE HOUSE
Chicago, Illinois
Located in Chicago, the Frederick C. Robie House is a historic landmark in the Hyde Park neighborhood. This house is designed by Wright and is considered one of the most important buildings in architectural history. The Robie House was commissioned by Frederick C. Robie, who wanted a home that reflected his forward-thinking preferences and provided a comfortable living space for
his family.
Over the years, the Robie House has undergone various changes and renovations due to reasons like new owners, changing needs and preserving its architectural importance. Its openplan layout features a single spacious room divided by a central chimney that is illuminated by the natural light of leaded glass windows and doors, along with glass panels with their colorful geometric patterns.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT IN THE HEARTLAND
SAMARA, THE JOHN E. CHRISTIAN HOUSE
Lafayette, Indiana
This house was founded between 1954 and 1956 and was designed by Wright for Dr. John Christian and his wife Catherine to serve as their dream home. Inside, Samara demonstrates Wright’s innovative use of space and materials.
The open floor plan, natural light, and strategic placement of windows and skylights create a sense of openness and connection to the outdoors.
Samara’s unique feature is its grid pattern on the concrete floor, which continues from inside the house to the outdoor terrace.
THE FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT HOUSE IN EBSWORTH PARK
Kirkwood, Missouri
This house is an important architectural gem designed and built in 1951 upon the request of Russell Kraus and his wife Ruth.
The design reflects Wright’s organic principles, which sought balance between the built environment and the natural landscape.
A defining aspect of the house is its architectural structure, which revolves around a layout similar to a stretched-out rectangle, which contains a complicated floor plan made up of intersecting rectangles.
MONONA TERRACE
Madison, Wisconsin
Monona Terrace is an architectural landmark on the shores of Lake Monona in Madison, Wisconsin. Wright’s architectural vision for the city of Madison was a curved gathering point connecting Lake Monona to the State Capitol; it was finally achieved in 1997 after 59 years of anticipation.
Monona Terrace includes a variety of patios and outdoor spaces that flow to the lakefront, offering striking views of Lake Monona and the Madison skyline.
Inside, Monona Terrace has conference rooms, exhibition rooms, a large ballroom and a roof terrace.
LAURENT HOUSE
Rockford, Illinois
Located in Rockford, the Laurent House was completed in 1952 and was one of the few homes Wright has built that was specifically designed to be fully accessible to those who are physically disabled.
The Laurent House was owned by Kenneth and Phyllis Laurent, who contacted Wright in 1948 and asked him to design a house for Kenneth; in order to have a wheelchair-accessible home that was both functional and beautiful.
A standout trait of the Laurent House is implementing continuous horizontal and vertical pathways throughout the design, allowing Kenneth Laurent to freely and comfortably move around.
BERNARD AND FERN SCHWARTZ HOUSE
Still Bend, Wisconsin
The Bernard and Fern Schwartz House, also known as “Still Bend,” is a landmark architectural design by Wright. Completed in 1939, it is located on the banks of the East Twin River in Two Rivers, Wisconsin.
The Schwartz House is one of Wright’s Usonian designs. Usonian homes sought
to reflect Wright’s vision of natural architecture. This house in particular included the remarkable aspects of its “Cherokee Red” concrete floor, which exemplifies Wright’s Usonian design.
As well as a pergola that connects the house to a small farm unit and the construction of a complex boathouse on the East Twin Rivers downstream from the house.
CEDAR ROCK STATE PARK Iowa
Located near Quasqueton in Northeast Iowa, Cedar Rock State Park is known for its natural beauty and architectural sense, especially for the presence of the Walter Residence, also known as the Lowell Walter House. Wright designed the house in Cedar Rock State Park, and it stands as a prime example of Wright’s ecological architecture.
Completed in 1950, the house features low ceilings, cantilevered ceilings and wide walls of windows. The interior showcases Wright’s signature attention to detail, large overhangs with curved edges reduce the sunlight and provide shade for the glass walls, and each room has clerestory windows or skylights. Cedar Rock State Park features hiking trails, picnic areas and scenic views of the Cedar River, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the surrounding landscape.

Oak Park is Home to History
Center your itinerary around architectural attractions and literary giants, from the Frank Lloyd Home and Studio to Ernest Hemingway’s birthplace
Travel groups that descend on Northern Illinois often spend the balance of their time in Chicago—but they should put serious consideration into Oak Park, a western suburb with nearly as many thrills for a cheaper price tag.
This lively town, just 10 miles from the heart of the Windy City, offers attractions, venue space, restaurants and accommodations to fill up a trip itinerary. There is Compound Yellow, a nonprofit art space where the community congregates to listen to music and create art. There is also the Oak Park River Forest Museum, where guests can dive into the fascinating history of these two suburbs.
Though these offerings are some of Oak Park’s best, it has much more to offer. The attractions that pull travelers in from distant time zones are the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio; the Unity Temple; and the Ernest Hemingway Boyhood Home.

National Corvette Museum Gearing Up for Group Travel
Iconic museum is making major strides in building out group programming • By
Jason Paha
Few things epitomize cool like the Chevrolet Corvette.
The Corvette not only stands as an emblem of American ethos, it embodies freedom and ingenuity like few other American brands. So much so that this April, Motor Trend magazine readers voted it the quintessential vehicle of the last 75 years.
More than seven decades ago, the inaugural Corvette was unveiled at the 1953 General Motors Motorama
in New York City. Since then, it has developed a massive following with Corvette clubs sprouting up across the United States and the world.
“The Corvette is ingrained in America’s fabric. It’s been featured in motion pictures, television and music for decades,” said Paul Crafton, group sales and services coordinator for the National Corvette Museum. “Corvette owners and fans represent a large and dedicated global community."
A Celebration of Speed
There are currently three integral parts to this American sports car campus. The 1,700,000-square foot General Motors plant, where the famous auto has been produced since 1981; the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park, which is situated on 419 acres and features a variety of driving experiences and thrills in Corvettes, Camaros or racing karts, all on a $20 million dual track complex; and the National Corvette Museum.

This is the crown jewel of the campus.
The 115,000-square-foot museum showcases more than 60 Corvettes, representing all of the eight generations of this iconic car with interactive exhibits and rare memorabilia.
The NCM also offers an upscale restaurant, The Stingray Grill, an upscale shopping experience at The Corvette Store and an indoor racing experience at the new Corvette Simulator.
Expanding Group Programming at the Corvette Museum
"We pride ourselves on being tour group friendly at the National Corvette Museum," Crafton said. "We offer an attractive group discount for groups of 15 or more. For full-sized tour groups arriving by motor coach, the escort and driver experience is complementary and motor coach parking is close by the main entrance."
The museum can be enjoyed with a self-guided or professionally guided experience. Box lunches or a catered lunch experience are available upon request.
"Our newest attraction at the National Corvette Museum is a pair of new Corvettes, a C7 model and a C8 that have both undergone an electronic conversion resulting in an indoor virtual reality racing experience," said Crafton. "We knew these would be a hit with corporate and student groups, but I was surprised how popular they are with my senior tour group crowd. It's great watching them have so much fun."
After-Hours VIP Program
While most museums close their doors at 5 p.m., NCM has a new product for the tour group crowd that's proven popular. The Victory Lane Dinner Package includes an evening meet and greet, VIP museum tour, elegant fourcourse dinner, live entertainment and
dancing and a Corvette logoed gift for each guest.
"Our Victory Lane Dinner" is truly special," Crafton said. "The group arrives around 6 p.m. and they have the entire museum completely to themselves. We make them feel like royalty."
Holidays and Horsepower (November 29-December 22)
Imagine experiencing a tour through the NCM while it's beautifully embellished for the holiday season. Then take a seat and enjoy festive holiday entertainment and a decadent luncheon.
"I have to brag on NCM when it comes to celebrating the holiday season," Crafton said. "We're the perfect stop for a tour group heading for Nashville or Louisville, both of which are roughly an hour away. This is a popular time to visit and with good reason."
An Industry Veteran Joins the Museum
In the summer of 2023, the museum hired Crafton to assist in new package
development and to increase sales. His background includes a 16-year run with the Opryland Hotel and Attractions Group in Nashville, followed by four years at the Galt House Hotel in Louisville and almost a decade in West Virginia and Virginia at the Homestead Resort and the Greenbriar Resort. At each property, he found success with year-round holiday packages.
"I've been in the resort hotel and attractions business for almost 30 years," Crafton said. "My main focus has always been on the group tour market and making sure my product always exceeded my tour customers' expectations.
"I've been passionate about vintage automobiles my whole life. Now, to be able to combine my tourism career with a favorite hobby makes for a perfect fit. I'm very blessed and proud to be a part of the excitement happening here at NCM."

The Atlantic City area boasts some of New Jersey’s most exceptional attractions
In a bygone era, Atlantic City was known largely for its casinos and gambling, a sort of Las Vegas of the East Coast. Today, it might still be “America’s Playground,” but it is much more: a bastion for artistic expression; a haven of tiny stores ideal for casual shopping; a history-steeped town with incredible artifacts and a fascinating past.
The Atlantic City Mural Tour is the perfect way for groups to begin their New Jersey adventure. Atlantic City is home to over 70 murals, many of which were created through Atlantic City Arts Foundation’s flagship program, 48 Blocks AC. This endeavor, an instant success and a key reason why modern Atlantic City is more beautiful and family-friendly than ever before, emphasizes artistic freedom and expression, motivating participating artists to bring their personal visions to life. The result is a diverse variety of styles across the 48 blocks of Atlantic City, from a “Z is for Zebra” mural on Mediterranean Avenue to one depicting Sarah Spencer Washington on Martin Luther King Boulevard. Next, a can’t-miss attraction situated conveniently in Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall: the Atlantic City Experience. This exhibit opened in July 2019 and reveals the scintillating history of Atlantic City. There is a display showcasing the “Summer of Freedom,” when the Democratic National Convention descended on the town in 1964. There are the artifacts related to Miss America and Mr. Peanut. Then there is the centerpiece, the Boardwalk Hall organ. The largest instrument in the world, this pipe organ
took three years to build and weighs over 150 tons. It has over 30,000 pipes and boasts the ability to thunder 5.5 million cubic feet of air space into the main arena.
Those looking to expand their horizons should take a 25-minute drive north to the historic Smithville Village in Galloway, New Jersey. Visitors who travel to this South Jersey gem have the opportunity to stroll the cobblestone pathways and beautiful manicured grounds as they visit over 40 unique shops and boutiques.
In fact, Smithville doesn’t just give guests the chance to buy nicknacks while enjoying a serene atmosphere—it also allows them to step back in time. Tourists invariably enjoy the essence of this tiny enclave: the warm embrace of small-town hospitality; the glowing charm of local businesses and mom-and-pop stores.

Enhance your group itinerary with a dash of artistic flair
By Billy Stampfl
Pablo Picasso once remarked that “art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Indeed, art has the power to reinvigorate, to awe, to introduce observers to the sorts of serenity or liveliness that mere words cannot conjure. Travel has similar effects on participants, leading many people—especially in recent years— to pursue what seems like an obvious endeavor: combining art and travel.
Just as culinary adventures can guide one’s travel, so too can art. Just as sports or cinema can be the impetus for an adventure, so too can art. Whether you are pursuing cities with dynamic art scenes, attending grand art festivals or touring a famous painter’s studio, art can be the foundation upon which the rest of your trip itinerary is built.

AMID CONFLICT, ISRAEL RETAINS ITS SPIRIT
Life goes on despite ongoing clashes that have the Middle East, and the world, on edge •
By Jason Paha
As I prepared to embark on my recent journey to Israel, a friend offered a stern warning: “Be careful. Israel is the most dangerous place on earth right now.” He couldn’t be more wrong.
Certainly, Israel’s geopolitical conflicts are well documented as the war in Gaza has claimed thousands of lives, the clash with Hezbollah forced many to leave their homes and the back-and-forth between Israel and Iran has the Middle East on edge.
What many don’t realize though is these battles are mostly unfolding in pockets far from Israel’s major tourism destinations. Echoing my friend’s erroneous admonition, Israel’s wars have deterred visitors to the point its tourism industry has been decimated.

The Central Bureau of Statistics reports Israel had 79,500 tourist entries in March, a considerable drop from the 375,600 tourist entries in March of 2023. Between January and March of this year, 206,700 visitors entered the country compared with 966,200 in the corresponding period of 2023. Judging by the United States’ most recent travel advisory, which lists Israel in the “reconsider travel” category, those numbers probably won’t grow anytime soon.
“There is unfortunately no tourism (currently),” said tour leader Mika Rabinovich. “Many travel agents are booking for 2025. The situation is bad even though it’s really nice and quiet and there is nothing (relating to the war) in those big towns and along the Sea of Galilee. ”
Far be it from me to quibble with the U.S. government, but when it comes to safety, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem are hardly Gaza. During an eight-day period in April, my group visited Israel’s most noteworthy tourism destinations and I felt as safe as I did at a Louisville Waffle House.
“People keep going with their lives and while it’s very sad and there’s a lot of tension, life goes on,” Rabinovich said.
Tel Aviv
Life does go on. Even with sobering remembrances across Tel Aviv of the hostages captured by the Palestinian military group Hamas during the October 7, 2023 attacks that killed 1,200 while abducting 252, mostly civilians. Posters strewn across the city of each Israeli hostage accompanied by the phrase “Bring Them Home Now” in bold lettering offer a stark reminder of the terror that accompanied that day and continues onward.
In Hostages Square , a public plaza in front of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art , families of the hostages taken during the attack have encamped in the square.
It has also been the site of rallies and protests during the Israel-Hamas war calling for the release of those taken captive.
Amid the pain and anger coursing through Tel Aviv, the city and its residents attempt to move forward. Tel Aviv, which only dates to 1909, is a cosmopolitan destination that captures the essence of modern Israel. It is a lively metropolis with a diverse population and pulsates with vibrancy, entertainment, fashion and cuisine.
No less an authority than the New York Times bestowed Tel Aviv with the monicker “Mediterranean Capital of Cool,” and one can see why.
Renowned as a city that never sleeps, Tel Aviv’s heartbeat echoes through sandy Mediterranean shores which meld seamlessly with a thriving cultural milieu featuring energetic bars and restaurants brimming with youth. Those interested in historical sightseeing can explore Old Jaffa , the ancient seaport that existed long before there was a Tel Aviv. The cobbled streets of Jaffa’s old quarter flourish with art galleries, shops and restaurants. The nearby Jaffa Flea Market bustles with activity and is reminiscent of a traditional Middle Eastern bazaar. Other Tel Aviv hot spots include its palm-lined beaches and the lively

Carmel Market, where vendors peddle fresh produce, souvenirs, clothing and delectable street food.
Caesarea National Park
A short drive north of Tel Aviv is Caesarea National Park , a onetime port city that today stands as a testament to Israel’s history. Traditionally, Caesarea is overrun with tour buses as it is Israel’s most popular tourist destination. But on the day our press group visited, Caesarea better resembled a ghost town than the thriving port city it once was. Regardless, Caesarea is a fascinating site, a national park where ancient
harbor ruins, pristine beaches and modern residences peacefully coexist. Established more than two millennia ago, this ancient city was constructed during the reign of Herod the Great around 1 BCE. The city was fortified by the Romans, early Christians, Muslims and then again by Christian Crusaders. The ruins include a theater, a Roman aqueduct, the Herodian hippodrome and much more.
Jerusalem
A city sacred to the world’s three great monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, Jerusalem is an extraordinary experience.
The Old City of Jerusalem is steeped in history, featuring four distinct quarters – Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Armenian – and is a place of pilgrimage for millions each year. Even with the typically hectic streets feeling more muted than usual, virtually every corner resonates with profundity as religion and history intertwine in ways few destinations can match.
The capital of Israel, and perhaps the holiest place on earth, the Old City is packed with religious and historical sites including the Via Dolorosa, which represents the path Jesus took on the way to his crucifixion; the Dome of the Rock, built in the late 7th century CE, it is the oldest extant Islamic monument; and the Tower of David Museum , one of Israel’s prominent cultural institutions and Jerusalem’s official museum.
Perhaps the most remarkable destination in Old Jerusalem is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre , built on the spot where Orthodox and Catholic Christians believe Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected. Many consider the church the holiest location for Christians in the world and it has been an important pilgrimage site for Christians since the fourth century
Less than a 10-minute walk from
the church is the Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall, thought by many Judaism’s most sacred structure. It is the only remains of the retaining wall surrounding the Temple Mount , the site of the First and Second Temples of Jerusalem , which were deemed uniquely holy by the ancient Jews. Thousands practicing a variety of faiths journey to the wall every year to recite prayers. Traditionally, these prayers are either spoken or written and placed in cracks of the wall.
Regardless of whether you are a practitioner of faith, Jerusalem’s blend of history, culture and spirituality make it a singular, unforgettable destination.
Modern Jerusalem
West Jerusalem, which colloquially is called modern Jerusalem, is home to a variety of attractions including Machane Yehuda Market , a bustling marketplace filled with produce stalls, bakeries and restaurants. The city also features a host of world-class museums and noteworthy stops including Yad Vashem , Israel’s Holocaust Memorial, the Israel Museum and the Knesset (Israeli parliament building). This part of Jerusalem has also been transformed with a fashionable selection of restaurants and bars and its vitality often surprises.
Just down the hill from Machane Yehuda is a relative newcomer and already a best-in-class favorite, Thinkers Distillery , which has been described as a honey pot for connoisseurs thanks to its avant-garde approach to producing gin, vodka and bourbon.
Dead Sea
Situated 1,300 feet below sea level and about an hour from Jerusalem, the Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth.
It has also been branded the world’s most ancient spa, as it is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world, with 34% salinity, nearly nine times

saltier than ocean water. That salt makes the Dead Sea an unparalleled experience as visitors effortlessly float on the buoyant water, with sinking a near-impossible task.
Surrounded by the stunning landscape of the Negev Desert, few places on the planet can rival the Dead Sea for tranquility. Often, groups will spend a day or two in a beachfront hotel fronting this mineral-laden lake whose briny water is said to provide relief for sufferers of any number of ailments.
At the lake’s northwest corner are the ruins of Qumran , an archaeological site where Bedouin shepherds in 1947 discovered parchment fragments that later became known as the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Israel is open
Residing between the cerulean waves of the Mediterranean Sea and the rugged terrain of the Negev Desert, Israel is home to a host of breathtaking vistas and timeless wonders. With its rich tapestry of culture, history and natural splendor, Israel stands as a testament to the enduring allure of the human spirit and the timeless power of the land itself.
“Israel is an incredible destination and right now, some of Israel’s most beloved and important sites, icons like Caesarea and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre have hardly a tourist around,” said Ellen Shapiro, director of public relations, North America, Israel Ministry of Tourism. “While there have been a notable number of tourists who have come to Israel to volunteer and show support, there aren’t many coming strictly to sightsee. At a time like this, it is, of course, understandable that visitors would be reluctant to travel, but the sites are open and safe. For everyone, I hope and pray that this war will end soon, and whenever people decide to visit, Israel is ready.”
