Maryland Boosts Sports Tourism with Grant and
Honors Michael Erin Busch’s Legacy
State tourism grant and legacy fund aim to push Maryland higher in sports tourism industry
By Kristen Cerney
The Youth and Amateur Sports Grant and Michael Erin Busch Fund enables Maryland, and the Maryland Sport Commission, to be a proactive competitor within the sports tourism industry. With these funds, Maryland will distinguish itself from competitor sets regionally, nationally and internationally. The state will be able venture into new spaces within youth and amateur sports, while simultaneously boosting its already merited reputation.
Qualifying sporting events have a capacity of at least 750 participants and 1,500 spectators, increase spending by out-ofstate visitors by $100,000 and generate stays at 500 hotel rooms overnight. The minimum grant award is $2,500 and the maximum is $75,000 per event.
The Maryland Sports Commission has attended over 3,500 events, resulting in $1.775 billion in direct spending on Maryland’s economy. While this feat is outstanding for the state, Maryland
Sports projects that these events will continue to generate growth for the economy in the long term.
THE LEGACY OF MICHAEL ERIN BUSCH
In 2003, Micahel Erin Busch became House Speaker in the House of Delegates. For 30 years, he served Maryland and the people of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, up until his death in 2019. Throughout his colored career, Speaker Busch sat in a multitude of committees, notably as Chair of the State Commission on Physical Fitness from 1989 to 1994.
Attending St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis, Speaker Busch was an active student, taking on three sports at one time. His athleticism was highlighted when he was awarded the Rhodes Trophy for being the premier football player in Anne Arundel County. Years later, he was the starting run back on the 1967 Temple University football team.
As a sophomore, he was recruited into the AllConference team, exemplifying his outstanding performance as an athlete. Speaker Busch suffered from an extensive knee injury in his junior year, hindering any plans for a career playing football. This did not stop him from attaining a remarkable life dedicating his work to education, coaching and public service.
One of Speaker Busch’s hallmarks was gender equity within youth sports, pushing to have equal athletic opportunities for female athletes. Throughout his position as administrator for youth sports programs within the
Department of Recreation and Parks Department in Anne Arundel County, he elevated facilities and programs nationwide, many of which continue to thrive due to his support.
Outside of work, he was a proud husband to his wife, Cynthia, and dedicated father to his two daughters, Megan and Erin, who went on to play Division I Lacrosse at Coastal Carolina University and Stetson University. Speaker Busch volunteered as a coach and referee for youth, high school and community college sports. His supportive nature led countless athletes to form a strong bond with each other on and off the field.
Youth sports were a great passion for Speaker Busch, yet he also advocated for state parks, educational programs and higher education. He and his family devoted time to appreciating the arts and bolstering local art programs. His commitment to supporting his community is felt to this day and continues to live on through the programs and centers he loved.
The Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts commemorated his life by renaming itself the Michael E. Busch Center for the Arts and Maryland Hall. The Annapolis Branch of the Anne Arundel County Library took the same initiative, honoring his lifetime of achievements by naming itself after him. To celebrate the positive impact that Speaker Busch had on youth and amateur sports, Maryland Legislature officially approved the Maryland Sports Commission Youth and Amateur Sports Grant and Michael Erin Busch Fund in 2020.

By Justin Marques
As the nonprofit arm of the Maryland Sports Commission, Sport & Entertainment Corp of Maryland is a 501(c)3 committed to elevating the quality and success of large-scale sports and entertainment events across the state. Founded in 2019, the organization’s efforts include supporting major events through economic research, strategic partnerships and sponsorship opportunities.

By actively seeking contributions from businesses, government entities, additional nonprofits and individuals, the organization has further strengthened its vibrant sports culture and a strong economic impact for Maryland.
INTRODUCING FOUR MAJOR KEYS
While Maryland and Sport & Entertainment Corp of Maryland are focused on a multitude of sports and sporting events, four major events stand out. These major keys include the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Baltimore, the Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill, the Maryland Cycling Classic and the Preakness Festival. To return steeplechase racing to Fair Hill, the Sport Corp hopes to relaunch racing in the spring of 2025.
AAU JUNIOR OLYMPIC GAMES

The Games bring together thousands of young athletes to compete in various sports such as track and field, swimming, wrestling and more.
Marking a major milestone for the city and state in the world of youth sports, the 2028 event will be the first time Baltimore has ever hosted the Games. The event will be held at Morgan State University and is expected to create a significant economic impact for hotels, shops, restaurants and more, further boosting Maryland’s position among the top sports tourism states in the country.

The Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill is a premier event in the world of equestrian sports, held at the renowned Fair Hill Special Event Zone. As one of only a few competitions of its kind in the United
States, it draws elite riders and horses from around the globe to compete in dressage, cross-country and show jumping.

Set against the backdrop of Fair Hill’s landscapes, the Maryland 5 Star offers an unforgettable experience for spectators, blending competition with the beautiful countryside. Cecil County has a history of hosting equestrian events, and Sport & Entertainment Corp of Maryland has been hosting this one since 2019.
MARYLAND CYCLING CLASSIC
Gear up for the Maryland Cycling Classic, a relatively new addition to the world of competitive cycling that is set to take place in 2025. After having to be postponed in 2024, the third race will showcase top cyclists from around the globe, racing through Maryland’s countryside and cities.
The Maryland Cycling Classic promises an action-packed experience for both competitors and fans. As a highlight on the international cycling calendar, the event will bring together elite athletes and cycling enthusiasts for a mixture of speed, skill and tough competition. Community building and giving back are also part of the spirit of the event, with 50 new bikes and helmets being donated to two schools to help promote better health and fitness.
PREAKNESS FESTIVAL
In May 2025, Maryland will commemorate a remarkable milestone: the 150th running of the Preakness Stakes. This momentous occasion serves as the foundation for the state’s vision to create a nationally recognized celebration that attracts participants and enthusiasts from around the globe. With Governor Moore’s historic $400 million investment aimed at wrapping up the redevelopment of Pimlico by 2027, Maryland is poised to elevate the Preakness Stakes and showcase the vibrant spirit of Baltimore and the wider Maryland community.
This significant investment not only enhances the racetrack’s infrastructure but also ensures that the benefits of this initiative will be felt across the entire state, promoting long-term growth and accessibility for all Marylanders.
The Preakness 150 celebration is not just a nod to a storied past; it represents a catalyst for the future of Maryland’s horse racing industry. The robust festival will be brimming with activities, seamlessly connecting existing events with new initiatives throughout the state and fostering a sense of community and excitement that embodies the essence of Maryland’s equestrian heritage.
