THE BEST PLACES TO PLAY INDOORS ARE RIGHT HERE
Where2Play Indoors marks our third iteration in the Where2Play (W2P) series, showcasing facilities across North America that are featured in our annual Sports Planning Guide (SPG) into a concise collection for event planners. For planners looking for a guide geared towards indoor sports facilities, this is the one you’ve been waiting for.
The 2024 edition of SPG clocks in at nearly 400 pages of in-depth features and facilities in the print guide and even more over at SportsPlanningGuide.com, which can be a little intimidating for those with a targeted sport or need. Just as SPG has been the nation’s leading source for tournament planners, W2P has become a go-to source for rights holders and governing bodies on narrowing down the selection process for sports venues. We’re thrilled to play a part in helping to make that process a little easier.
W2P Indoors is packed with over 200 indoor facilities, categorized into four regions, varying from big arenas for major sporting events to smaller indoor multipurpose complexes for youth tournaments from basketball to volleyball and more.
Speaking of, we’re excited to continue our in-depth, state-ofthe-industry reports, this time on basketball and volleyball in the United States. Diving into two of the most popular indoor sports, statistically, our writers provide a look at participation and growth, alongside potential or current roadblocks to overcome.
We hope that you enjoy W2P Indoors, and look forward to future issues on different places to play.
Be safe and play well,

“We are currently seeing participation in youth [as well as] high school levels that are at an all-time high.”

Setting Records and Trends: Where Volleyball Stands Today
BY NICHOLE KIDDY
The sport of volleyball originated in 1895 by combining a basketball and a tennis net to create a new game. Fast forward to the present day, and it’s evident that volleyball has skyrocketed in popularity, becoming a staple sport for youth and adults alike in the United States. Volleyball isn’t just incredibly popular; it’s also experiencing some of the most significant growth numbers ever seen in the sport.
On the club side of volleyball, during the 2022–23 season, USA Volleyball reported that they witnessed a remarkable 9.6% surge in membership, reaching a total of 408,000, marking the most substantial percentage growth since 1998. What’s even more impressive is that this growth isn’t confined to any specific demographic; it’s across the board. Junior women’s membership saw a 9.2% increase, junior men’s membership surged by 9.7%, and adult membership experienced a 11.6% rise.
The school side of volleyball also boasts impressive participation numbers. According to the most recent High School Athletics Participation Survey by the NFHS, volleyball ranks as the number one girls’ team participatory sport in both high school and college. Moreover, while not yet matching the same popularity as girls’ volleyball, boys’ high school volleyball participation has seen substantial growth, increasing by 40% since 2017 as reported by USA Volleyball.
“We are currently seeing participation in youth [as well as] high school levels that are at an all-time high,” said Jordan Miller, North Central College Women’s Volleyball coach.
“Volleyball is a sport that is continuing to grow in a very competitive field. With camps, youth clubs and high schools, we see a very saturated market that is filled with a wide variety of talent.”
Serving Up Success: The Growth of Volleyball
As participation numbers soar, the sport itself continues to grow and gain popularity. NCAA collegiate volleyball reached new heights in 2023, as the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship shattered the all-time collegiate volleyball attendance record for an indoor venue, drawing an impressive crowd of 19,727 fans. That match was the first NCAA volleyball championship to ever be broadcast on ABC, attracting an average of 1.7 million viewers. This match also set a TV viewership record as the most-watched NCAA women’s volleyball match in history, marking a remarkable 115% increase from the viewership of the previous year’s championship match. Earlier in that season, the Nebraska Cornhuskers Women’s Volleyball team made history by breaking the attendance world record for any women’s sporting event. A staggering 92,003 fans gathered at Nebraska’s football stadium to witness the match.
Youth volleyball tournaments as well have grown exponentially over the years, evolving into massive events that significantly benefit the surrounding areas.
“Many of these tournaments draw 2,500 to 5,000 athletes and spectators to their local area for the event,” said Carey Lingenfelter, director of Ozark Juniors Volleyball Club. “The economic impact of these overnight stays is a tremendous boost to local economies. [Our club hosts] six weekend events in Northwest Arkansas in 2024 with more demand projected in upcoming years.”
Hinders to Volleyball’s Growth
As youth volleyball events continue to grow, the challenge lies in finding indoor facilities capable of accommodating 350+ teams. Unlike outdoor sports complexes like soccer or softball fields, constructing new indoor facilities suitable for hosting large-scale volleyball events comes at a much higher cost, and it seems the growth of youth volleyball is outpacing the development of new facilities.
“Volleyball does have to compete with other sports, such as basketball, for court availability,” said Seagan Morrow, sports sales manager at Visit Bentonville. “If communities lack the adequate facilities or if existing facilities are overbooked, it can restrict participation.”
Carey Lingenfelter also cited facility availability as a key factor limiting volleyball’s growth saying that “the lack of large sport facilities that have the capacity to serve 2,500 spectators or more and the availability to schedule multiple events annually hinders growth, as well as the shortage of regional volleyball referees.”
Volleyball Offers Numerous Post-Graduation Ways to Stay Involved
Currently, there are two professional volleyball leagues: Athletes Unlimited and the Professional Volleyball Federation, with another league, League One Volleyball, set to launch in 2025. These leagues provide highly competitive opportunities for athletes and fans alike, extending the sport’s reach beyond college. Additionally, recreational adult participation in volleyball is thriving, with numerous avenues available to enjoy the sport.
“After college participation, there are many options for players to stay involved in adult recreational leagues,” said Miller. “This includes indoor, sand, grass and even mud volleyball. Programs can be found all over the country for all ages to enjoy.”
A unique thing about volleyball is that it has different variations of the game, depending on the terrain. Beach volleyball in particular has surged in popularity, even becoming its own NCAA sport in 2016. With the demand for indoor volleyball facilities on the rise, there’s also a growing desire for indoor beach facilities, catering to both youth and adult players and enabling year-round play.
In charting volleyball’s journey from its humble beginnings to its current status as a powerhouse sport, the evidence of its popularity is irrefutable. The surge in participation numbers, spanning across various demographics, illustrates a sport that resonates deeply with both the youth and adults of the United States. As volleyball reaches new heights in terms of viewership, attendance records and economic impact, it’s clear that its growth trajectory is only bounded by the suitable facilities needed to sustain its momentum. The State of Basketball in the United States
BASKETBALL CONTINUES TO BE ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR SPORTS IN THE U.S.
BY REID SOLBERG
Basketball continues to be one of the most popular sports in the U.S. Basketball’s popularity in the United States is a testament to its universal appeal across all age groups and levels of competition. From youth programs to the grand stage of professional leagues like the NBA, basketball continues to captivate audiences and participants alike, solidifying its position as one of the nation’s most beloved sports.
At the youth level, basketball serves as a gateway to athleticism, camaraderie and personal growth. Recent statistics reported by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) note that there are around 28.1 million Americans who play basketball from the age of six and up, with the second closest sport being baseball at 15.5 million participants. The accessibility of basketball courts in schools and communities, paired with the sport’s relatively low equipment requirements, makes it a popular choice for athletes all over the world.
“Basketball [participation] continues to increase in the Lubbock area both on the youth, high school and collegiate level,” said Eric Launer, sales manager for Lubbock Sports. “There are around 30 to 40 youth tournaments per year in the area, including the Little Dribber National tournament, which was held earlier this month in Levelland—15 miles west of Lubbock. Last year, over 120 teams competed in 12 gyms across the city [during] the week between Christmas and New Year’s.”
In high schools across the country, basketball commands a dominant presence both on and off the court. Even though high school basketball participation numbers dipped slightly in 2022, basketball remains the #1 sport in terms of the number of high schools that sponsor basketball teams in the United States among girls and boys, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
The continued growth and popularity of basketball in the U.S. can be credited to a combination of factors, including its fast-

paced gameplay, electrifying athleticism and the star power of basketball icons such as Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Luka Doncic and, most recently, Caitlin Clark. As the sport evolves and adapts to changing trends, one thing remains certain, basketball’s appeal will continue to unite communities, inspire future generations and entertain the people of the United States and all over the world for years to come.
Youth Women’s Basketball Is Declining While the WNBA and College Are Flourishing
With youth women’s basketball participation numbers slowly declining since 2003, there was no better time for stars like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Cameron Brink to come to light. Women’s basketball has lost about 19% of its players over the last two decades, according to NFHS. Meanwhile, sports including volleyball, track and field and soccer are beginning to get more participants at the youth level among women.
It’s well known that the WNBA and college basketball in the United States has been on the rise with stars bringing
a new dynamic to the game. When it comes to collegiate athletics, women’s basketball has outperformed the men’s side. According to Nielsen, 10 million viewers tuned into the 2023 women’s NCAA National Championship between LSU and Iowa, which was up 103% from the previous year. Most recently, a record number of 2.45 million people tuned into the 2024 WNBA Draft, shattering the previous 2004 record of 601,000 viewers.
With the WNBA and NCAA women’s basketball being as popular as it is, youth participation hopes to follow in a similar trend.
Problems That Basketball Is Facing
In the United States, the accessibility of basketball courts has become a growing concern, particularly in urban areas. With increasing population density and limited space, finding suitable courts for players to practice and compete has become a challenge. Many existing courts are not up to standard, lacking proper maintenance and facilities which discourages participation and affects skill development for many players.
“We could always use more courts,” said Emily Hill, marketing manager for Visit Fort Wayne. “As basketball tournaments grow and organizations expand, Fort Wayne is planning to grow with them to keep up with the demand for more simultaneous games on more courts throughout the city.”
Additionally, the demand for court time often exceeds availability, leading to scheduling conflicts and limited opportunities for organized play. Addressing the shortage of basketball courts requires investment in infrastructure and community partnerships, and to repurpose existing spaces for recreational use.
“Running out of courts [is a big problem], right now a number of our tournaments are capped due to gym availability,” said Launer. “We have a couple of great multi-court facilities as well as a ton of high school courts but could for sure use more.”
By prioritizing the development and maintenance of courts, communities can make sure that basketball remains accessible to players of all ages, encouraging a love for the game and promoting healthy lifestyles. W 2P
