College football, or any sport, would not excite millions of people every year if it wasn't for the fans. Yet, when deciding the best college football player in the nation, the fans were left out of the selection process until we launched our award in 2010.

The Premier Player of College Football Trophy is an award presented to the athlete the fans voted as the best player in NCAA college football. The Premier Players Sports Foundation releases an online poll at the beginning of the college football season with 20 of the best players for fans to follow. The foundation will add up to five more greatperforming players to the poll in mid-October while deleting nonperformers. Fans then have until the last conference championship game to cast their vote for deciding The Premier Player of College Football.

"Fans are such a big part of the games, so we wanted to come up with an award that they can be a big part of, too," said Carnell Moore, founder of the Premier Players Sports Foundation. "All the athletes in our polls are Premier Players, but we let the fans decide who gets the trophy."

Can Silver Investing Make Your Portfolio Shine?

When thinking of investing in precious metals, gold may be the first thing that comes to mind. Although silver investing sometimes gets hidden behind gold’s shine, that doesn’t necessarily make it less sparkly. That’s because even though silver historically trades at a lower value than the yellow metal, its value generally tends to be more volatile.

In mid-October 2022, the December 2022 Gold futures (/GC) contracts were trading at around $1,675 per ounce compared to about $18.90 per ounce for December 2022 Silver futures (/SI). But silver can have an edge on gold. It draws demand from the investment arena as a precious metal and sees greater commercial demand for use in industrial applications. So, the price of silver is likely to be influenced by its industrial demand.

Because it can conduct electricity and doesn’t corrode like other metals, silver is used in several industries, including solar energy and in batteries for personal computers and electric vehicles. So, the growing demand from solar energy products may have helped silver gain

popularity as an investment. The two metals tend to move in sync for the most part (see chart image on next page), although there are times when they outperform each other

The Allure of Precious Metals

Why all the interest in precious metals? There are several factors that may attract investors:

Physical demand. One reason investors have been drawn to precious metals is the potential of significant physical demand growth, driven by consumers in China and India.

Flight to safety. Global events, such as virus outbreaks, politics, and trade wars, could give rise to uncertainty in the global equity markets. This may drive investors to assets like precious metals because they’re often thought to retain their value, although past performance does not guarantee future results.

Interest rates. Low interest rates could increase (continue on next page)

the appeal of precious metals to some investors.

How to Invest in Silver

If investors are considering adding silver to their portfolio, there are different ways to go about it.

Buy the metal outright. This may be the most straightforward way to invest in silver, but investors may have to pay markups and commissions. They’ll also have to think about how to store the metal.

Invest in stocks of silver-related companies

Silver-mining companies and firms involved in the production, distribution, and use of the metal can be considered silver-related companies. Generally, the profit margins of silver companies are thought to correlate with the price of silver. However, investors should consider other factors, such as geopolitics, corporate governance, energy, and labor costs. It’s a good idea to research the different companies before investing in them.

Invest in silver exchange-traded products (ETPs). Silver ETPs, such as exchange-traded funds (ETFs), could give investors exposure to silver, but keep in mind, all ETFs aren’t alike. They each have a different mix of silver assets, such as the physical metal, futures, options, or

other investments that correlate with silver price movement.

Trade silver futures and options. This may be an efficient way to participate in the silver market, but it carries substantial risks and may not be suitable for every investor.

It’s important to know that while both gold and silver have liquid futures and options markets, trading in silver tends to be thinner than that for gold. Silver price moves also tend to be more volatile, so traders should carefully consider position sizing and the potential risks involved when trading a leveraged contract like silver futures

Risks to Consider

Although consumer and investor demand could rise significantly, because of higher market volatility and increasing geopolitical risk, there are several potentially offsetting headwinds for precious metals. For example, a strong U.S. economy and U.S. dollar could make precious metals a less attractive investment.

5 Reasons To Be Thankful For Your Team

Leaders know leading a team is a tough but rewarding challenge. It takes a lot of things— wisdom, patience, courage, planning, and so much more.

One characteristic that is often missing from leadership lists is thankfulness. An attitude of thankfulness not only benefits you but also your team members. Charles Schwab, the famous American steel magnate, said it best, "The way to develop the best that is in a person is by appreciation and encouragement."

There are many reasons to include thankfulness in your leadership style. Scripture has a lot to say about thankfulness. In fact, it tells us we should give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

So, no matter where you are in your career, give thanks for where you're at during this season.

Here are some ideas to kickstart cultivating more thankfulness for your team:

1. Individual strengths: Each person on your team brings individual strengths to achieve your team's goals. Reach out to your team and thank each one of them for their unique contributions.

2. Contribution to your leadership journey: After all, without a team, you would not be a leader. Wherever you are in your career, your current team is influencing your leadership style and skills. Look for areas to grow and thank team members for their influence in your life when the opportunity exists.

3. Collaboration: From brainstorming to executing new processes, be thankful you have a team to solve complex problems with. As the

old adage goes, two (or more) brains are better than one. Look for ways to invite others' points of view into the toughest challenge you are facing as a leader.

4. Community: Together is better. Working relationships with good boundaries equal a community. Look for simple ways to build community this month like bagels and coffee in the morning to purposefully thank the team for completing a common goal—cast a vision for how that will empower the team to do greater things and be thankful.

5. Caring: Be thankful for the team members that put each other first to help each other find answers, solve problems, and achieve goals. Privately thank someone on your team for a selfless act. Be specific and encourage them to spread the same thankfulness to someone else on the team.

Expressions of thankfulness also help build and

sustain connections in your relationships. Connection makes relationships more resilient it provides the capability to deal with adversities and bounce back from them with strength and motivation.

Don't overthink ways to show your team thankfulness; a handwritten note is still a powerful way to say thank you.

Strong leaders are thankful for their teams. I encourage you to bring more thankfulness practices into your work habits every day, all year long.

Meet The Man Behind The Freddie Solomon Community Spirit Award

Freddie Solomon played his college football at the University of Tampa and went on to play for the Miami Dolphins for three seasons before joining the San Francisco 49ers where he helped win two Super Bowl championships. His career in the National Football League as a wide receiver ended after 11 years.

Then the Sumter, SC, native known as “Fabulous Freddie”, came back to Hillsborough County to make a more lasting impact. Solomon devoted the next 12 years of his life to the youths of Tampa Bay, working with the Sheriff’s department to teach kids life lessons through football. His efforts impacted more than two decades of youths and his lessons are still carried on in the community.

Mr. Solomon passed away on February 12, 2012, after a nine-month battle with colon and

liver cancer. However, the Freddie Solomon Community Spirit Award continues his efforts to help make the world a better place by annually honoring a collegiate football player who has impacted the lives of others through giving and community service.

Each college football season, colleges and universities submit nominees for the award via an e-mail to editor@premierplayers.com by Nov. 15th. Nominations contain details of the candidate’s grade point average, recent community involvement, and why the candidate should receive the award.

Stop Rate Ranks Penn State’s Defense #1

Ladies and gentlemen, can I please have your attention? I’ve just been handed an urgent news story, and I need all of you to stop what you’re doing and listen:

Stop rate is back!

What is stop rate? It’s a basic measurement of success: The percentage of a defense’s drives that end in punts, turnovers or a turnover on downs. This simple metric can offer a more accurate reflection of a defense’s effectiveness in today’s faster-tempo college football than yards per game or points per game. We’re now in Year 7 of tracking this statistic along with every defense’s points per drive average.

Because we filter out games against FCS opponents for these standings, we usually prefer to wait and let these defenses get a few games under their belts. The more games they play, the more meaningful stop rate data becomes. Now that we’re a month into the season, let’s see how they’re doing.

Penn State debuted at No. 1 in the first edition of the 2023 standings with a stop rate of 88.9 percent. The

Nittany Lions had a top-five unit by this measure in their first season under defensive coordinator Manny Diaz and look like they’ve gotten even better.

They’re led up front by a talented trio of pass rushers in Chop Robinson (#44), Adisa Isaac (320) and Dani Dennis-Sutton (#33), have the No. 1 pass defense in the country and are off to an incredible start in the turnover department with an 11-0 turnover margin. Best of all? They’ve displayed strong depth through these four games, which hints to this high level of play being sustainable.

Duke made a major statement in its season opener with a 28-7 win over Clemson, aided by stops on 12 of 13 drives and stingy play in the red zone. This defense led by head coach Mike Elko and coordinator Tyler Santucci has allowed 7, 14 and 7 points in the three games since then. Two of those touchdowns were surrendered in the last two minutes of blowout wins. This crew has been excellent and is currently No. 2 in stop rate at 88.6 percent.

Checking in at No. 4 this week: Hello, Oklahoma! Clemson was a contender for the stop rate crown

every year under Brent Venables and finished No. 1 in both 2017 and ’18, so it is in no way surprising that Venables has the Sooners’ defense playing so much better in Year 2. They finished No. 72 in stop rate at the end of their 6-7 season and look seriously improved at all three levels of the defense through four games. Oklahoma is currently No. 2 in points per drive, has yet to surrender a rushing touchdown and has a 3-to-8 touchdown-to-interception ratio against the pass.

There’s no need to be concerned about Georgia not being No. 1 right now. The Bulldogs have forced more punts than any other team in the country and have been a top-10 defense in points per drive, yards per attempt and third-down defense. They’d be No. 5 in stop rate if we were counting their win over FCS program UT Martin. They’re going to be just fine.

Last season, Iowa finished No. 1 in stop rate for the second time in three years. The Hawkeyes check in at No. 31 this week’s rankings. Four games in, they’re still a top-10 unit in terms of yards per play allowed (4.21) and have given up the fewest plays of 20-plus yards (five) of any defense, but their stop rate took a hit during the 31-0 loss at Penn State, and they dropped 12 spots in these rankings.

USC (105th), Oregon (111th) and UCLA (112th) all finished poorly in last year’s stop rate standings but are off to a much better start to 2023. You’d expect

improvements in Year 2 for the staffs at USC and Oregon, especially given their efforts to upgrade on defense with transfer portal pickups and blue-chip freshmen. The Trojans are tied for No. 1 nationally in tackles for loss (41), and the Ducks are No. 2 in passing yards per attempt allowed (4.6). New UCLA defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn came from the NFL and deserves a lot of credit for getting the Bruins back on track. They’re all the way up to No. 7 in stop rate and No. 4 in points per drive.

The one Top 25 contender whose stop rate early on this season is a little alarming? That would be LSU. The Tigers check in at No. 107 this week based on their three games against FBS opponents. The second-half struggles against Florida State are clearly weighing heavily in their 53.1 percent stop rate right now but getting just four stops in a 34-31 win over Arkansas didn’t help.
