To Start NBA Playoffs by Marc Jenkins
The 2011 edition of the NBA postseason has been every bit of sensational and spectacular as the regular season was and as we hoped the playoffs would be. We’ve had a major upset (Memphis beating San Antonio), a minor one (Atlanta defeating Orlando) and a sweep (Boston crushing New York) along with a bunch of other well played series that had some unexpected twists and turns, too. There were eight series in total during the first round of the playoffs; one went four games (Celtics/Knicks), three series went five games (Thunder/Nuggets, Bulls/Pacers and Heat/76ers) and the remaining four went to six (Hawks/Magic, Mavericks/ Trailblazers, Grizzlies/Spurs and Lakers/Hornets). The Knicks were outplayed, outworked and outhustled by the Celtics which is why they didn’t win a single game. The major difference in the series was leadership which the C’s had plenty of while the Knicks had none. Another key factor was the fact that Boston was led in scoring by four different players in each game while Carmelo Anthony did most of the heavy lifting with the exception of game one. The Thunder and Nuggets squared off in one of the best five-game series I have ever witnessed which was full of fast paced action, solid defense and clutch performances. Kevin Durant played exceptionally well in both the opening and closeout games of this series (41 points in each including a spectacular 16 points in the final four minutes of game five) while the rest of the squad produced throughout the series to earn them the victory. Even though Denver was just as athletic and talented as Oklahoma City they didn’t have the closer that

OKC had in KD. The Bulls and Pacers series was probably the most physical of the first round affairs as several players were shaken as a result of many hard personal and flagrant fouls which were dished out mostly by Indiana. Derrick Rose was simply too much for the Pacers to handle as he single handedly controlled the entire series with his ability to get into the paint and score or distribute. Indiana showed a lot of heart and tons of fight but Chicago was just too strong of a team for them especially with the soon-to-be named MVP playing like one throughout the series. The Heat and 76ers series actually got much more interesting as it continued to develop; kind of like a movie that starts out slow and turns out to be pretty decent. Miami overmatched Philadelphia early and often in the series but somewhere towards the end of game three the Sixers realized that they could compete with the Heat and that’s what they did. Philly won game four and played well in defeat in game five much to do with the fact that Chris Bosh had an exceptional series. Yes, I said Bosh. The outcome to the Hawks and Magic series was very surprising considering the fact that when these two teams met last year in the postseason, Orlando swept Atlanta in four games by a total of 101 points. The Hawks didn’t double team Dwight Howard and let him do his thing which left the Orlando shooters defended all of the time and stopped them from burring three’s left and right. Jamal Crawford made tons of clutch hoops for the Hawks and if they don’t re-sign him after that performance it
would be a crime. The Mavericks and Trailblazers series was a very close battle between two teams that have extremely deep rosters. The Mavs’ veteran experience was the difference in the series as the Blazers could make key stops and buckets when it mattered most. Dallas got a usual good performance out of Dirk Nowitzki as he led them to victory throughout the series even though many (including yours truly) pegged them to go down in a first-round upset. The surprise of the first round was without question the Grizzlies taking out the Spurs in six games (just the fourth number eight seed to defeat a number one seed in NBA Playoffs history). The Grizzlies did it by setting the tone and pace constantly throughout the series and played a together team game that would propel them to the unthinkable upset. In this series, Memphis not only notched their first postseason victory in franchise history (0-12 up until the game one victory) but also their first playoff series win as well. The Grizzlies played tremendous team defense and rebounded well which is why they advanced and the Spurs didn’t. The Lakers and Hornets series had some very intriguing moments which were mostly spearheaded by Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul. The Hornets shocked the Lake Show by jumping out and taking game one. However, in the end, it was just too much Bryant and Andrew Bynum in the paint. Bynum had a coming out party in the series, imposing his will down low and destroying the New Orleans big-men in the process. This series may have been exactly what L.A. needed to wake them up and send them on the correct path to obtain another title. The second round features the Thunder versus the Grizzlies and the Lakers versus the Mavericks in the West and in the East it’s the Celtics against the Heat and the Bulls taking on the Hawks. At the time of writing this piece the Grizzlies and Heat were both up one game to none on their opponents but neither one of these series is anything but over as both the Thunder and Celtics are tough teams with proven closers. I still think the Thunder will beat the Grizzlies, the Mavs will take down the Lakers, the Bulls will beat up on the Hawks and the Heat will probably defeat the Celtics (I’m not 100% on the last one). The Mavs and the Thunder will go seven games with the Thunder getting the slight edge in the end and the Heat (if they beat the C’s which they probably will) will beat the Bulls in order to advance to the NBA Finals. In the NBA Finals, the Thunder will square off against the Heat in a competition with the two best duos in the Association going at one another (Durant and Westbrook versus Wade and James). I have to put my chips behind Durant and his Thunder as they may be ready sooner than everyone thinks to win it all and hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

With the 2011 NFL Draft, some teams appear to have substantially improved while others have either stayed in a kind of static or even regressed state. Always ones to look at the positive side of sports at Premier Players we thought we would share some of the biggest winners now the dust has settled at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

Detriot Lions No, that is not a typo, the much maligned Detroit Lions were one of the biggest winners in the wake of the 2011 NFL Draft. Sitting at No.13 in the first round the Lions watched as Auburn DT Nick Fairley (6’5, 298) slid right into their laps. Fairley is a wrecking ball of a player who, if motivated properly, can be entirely unstoppable. The fact that the Lions get to pair him with last year’s first rounder Ndamukong Suh should quite frankly be illegal. Detroit now has the best defensive front in the entire league, no one will run on them, and the two could eventually become a legendary pairing. The Lions also added a much needed WR in Titus Young (Boise State) and a potential starting RB in Mikel Leshoure from Illinois. Detroit as a player in the NFC North? You better believe it!

Indianapolis Colts The Colts were one of the big beneficiaries of the QB rush in the middle of round 1 as outstanding OT prospect out of Boston College Anthony Costanzo fell to them with the 22nd pick. You can pencil Costanzo in to be the starting LT in Indy for the next 10 years. Not content with getting one big body to protect Peyton Manning for the forseeable future the Colts traded up in round 2 to grab Ben Ijalana from Villanova. Though the level of competition scared some teams off of the T/G tweener there were some draft experts who had Ijalana projected as one of the best players in the entire draft. In round 3 Indy addressed their other line with DT Drake Nevis out of LSU. Nevis is a touch undersized at 6’1, 291, but he fits perfectly into the Colts scheme and will contribute in their rotation as a rookie. Bill Polian and the rest of the brain trust showed once again that picking for value in positions of need is the best way to conduct a successful draft.
Kansas City Chiefs It is not often that a playoff team from the previous year can ink their first four draft picks into starting roles, but that is exactly what the Chiefs seems set to do after a third consecutive top-notch draft. After picking up high character leaders in 2010, former Patriot GM Scott Pioli was confident enough to step outside those confines this year with the selection of WR Jon Baldwin from Pitt in the first round. Baldwin is a physical specimen with all the tools to be a Pro-Bowler if he can keep his head in the game. In a draft that was short on WRs after Aj Green and Julio Jones went off the board early, the Chiefs were able to trade down and still get the guy they wanted all along. Second round C Rodney Hudson (Florida State) will replace the aging Casey Wiegmann, while Georgia OLB Justin Houston will be the steal of the draft in the third round IF he finally plays to his athletic potential. At 6’3, 270 lbs, he is an absolute monster in the run game. The most intriguing pick might be Iowa QB Ricky Stanzi who is straight out of the Tom Brady mould and fills a glaring need for Kansas City in the developmental QB spot.
Green Bay Packers Drafting with the last pick in each round (minus those weird compensatory picks) would seem to kill any chance at a solid draft for a team. However, the Packers have a true draft guru in GM Ted Thompson. As a result, a team with very few holes somehow managed to get even better on draft day. Mississippi State OT Derek Sherrod is the heir apparent to Chad Clifton on the offensive line, while WR Randall Cobb out of Kentucky will contribute right away as an ultra dynamic return man and give Aaron Rodgers an extra option he quite frankly doesn’t need. RB Alex Green out of Hawaii was the consensus top ‘big’ back in the draft. At 6’2, 230 lbs., he runs a 4.45 40-yard dash and he has a level of explosion that was sorely missing out of the Green Bay backfield in 2010. Teams like the Packers and the Patriots have proven that a few successful drafts in a row can quickly vault a team into the upper echelons of the league. Is Detroit on its way to the top? Will the Packers maintain their zest for another Super Bowl run? No one knows for sure, but many teams improved through the 2011 Draft and each will be hoping that their new rookies can make an impact this fall and beyond. PREMIER PLAYERS

Micheal Spurlock On Mission by Rachel Turner
Breaking the Curse Wide receiver Micheal Spurlock broke a Tampa Bay curse in 2007. Raymond James Stadium shook with excitement and shock as Micheal returned a kickoff for a touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons in a regular season game—the first in the Buccaneers’ thirty-two-year history. During the following three years, he also returned a punt and a squib kick for a touchdown, but none of those feats affected Micheal like leaving the United States for the first time on a mission trip with SCORE International in 2011. “I wanted to get out of my comfort zone, see how other people live, and learn a new culture,” said Micheal. “I wanted to open my eyes and heart to something new.”
On Mission Micheal heard about the mission trip to Costa Rica through Buc’s chaplain Doug Gilcrease. Doug, who also works with Athletes in Action, approached SCORE International in 2009 to set up a construction mission trip for five NFL players. “The trip actually had nothing to do with football,” said Doug. “I just wanted to get the players away from their comfort zone, cell phones, and internet, so we went to Costa Rica to build a fence.”
Since then, SCORE International has provided coaches, referees, and equipment to help the league grow, and every March, Doug hosts several NFL players to do football clinics.
‘You Can’t Break Them . . .’ Three years after the Costa Rican American Football Federation began, Micheal decided to visit Costa Rica with two teammates - Adam Hayward and Corey Lynch. Their mission included constructing missionary apartments, speaking at several schools, and running football clinics for the six Costa Rican teams. The Tampa team hit the ground running as they mixed cement during the day and ran football clinics after nine o’ clock every night, since that was the only time American football teams could use the soccer fields to train. “These are a lot of guys that soccer is their first sport - their feet are their hands,” said Micheal. “You’re pretty much teaching football to grown men but on the level of little kids. But you can’t break them no matter how hard you work them.” After each clinic, Micheal, Adam, or Corey would speak to the players about how a relationship with Christ changed their lives.
During that trip, the players were riding back to their hotel late one night when they saw young men practicing American football on soccer field.
“Before, what made me successful were the things that I accomplished and material things,” said Micheal. “Now, especially after coming here, it opens up your heart and eyes to understand that success isn’t made through material things but through relationships - loving on people, praying with them, and sharing the Word with them.”
“Stop the bus!” They yelled. Doug and the players walked to the soccer field, met the players, and learned that the soccer-crazed country had just begun a Costa Rican American Football Federation.

NCAA Baseball Players to Get Familiar With by Marc Jenkins
C ollege baseball is in full swing and with it has come tons of terrific action on the diamond across the entire nation. Hitting streaks, walk-off wins, homers and strikeouts have all taken place much to the excitement of fans who enjoy a great college game. Many of the top teams around the nation (TCU, Florida, Texas, South Carolina and Arizona St.) are playing just as many expected them to while others (UConn, St.John’s, Tulane and Baylor) are playing well below expectations. There are also certain players who have taken the college baseball scene by storm this year and figure to be amongst the top college players selected in the upcoming 2011 MLB Draft. Here are six players who are putting together an exceptional year so far during the 2011 NCAA baseball season. 24

Chad Zurcher – SS/2B Memphis Junior Chad Zurcher is having an extraordinary junior season at the University of Memphis. The 6’0” 165 lbs. versatile infielder is currently hitting .470 with 71 hits, 28 runs batted-in, 39 runs scored and 16 doubles in 151 at-bats. Zurcher has amassed for 91 total bases and 28 base-on balls along with an OPS of 1.180 while striking out just seven times. Zurcher is a pure contact hitter who shows signs of power, excellent defense and clutch ability. He is
currently leading the nation in batting average and if he decides to enter into the draft this year should be selected high in the process. Tyler Jones – C Long Island Junior Tyler Jones is one of the best offensive catchers currently playing at the college level. He has all the tools to one day become one of the better offensive catchers at the professional level. So far during his junior year, the 6’1” 195lbs backstop has hit for a .436 average with 58 hits, 35 runs scored, 32 runs batted-in and 76
total bases. Despite competing in a very small conference (Northeast Conference), Jones is still catching the eyes of many pro scouts who feel that he will be a player at the next level. He is also an excellent defensive catcher who can call a game very well for his pitchers. David Herbek – SS James Madison Senior David Herbek is an incredible offensive talent at the plate with hitting for both contact and power. In his final year at James Madison, the shortstop has batted .376 with 65 hits, 13 home runs, 58 runs batted-in and scored 46 runs in just 173 at-bats. Herbek has also been responsible for 127 total bases, 17 doubles, three triples, 17 base-on balls and an OPS of 1.187 as well. Herbek is also very solid defensively as well, displaying the ability to make several tough plays to either direction along with a strong arm. Herbek should be a very high selection during the draft and expect to hear his name at the Major League level very soon. Taylor Jungmann – P Texas Junior Taylor Jungmann has pitched incredibly for the Texas Longhorns this season which is one of the major reasons why they are one of the top teams in the nation. In the 11 games that Jungmann has started, he has compiled a 10-0 record with a 0.90 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 89 and 2/3 innings of work. Jungmann has also racked up three complete games while just surrendering 49 hits, 14 base-on balls and nine earned runs along with an impressive .158 batting average against. The 6’6” 220lbs right-hand hurler should continue his dominating season at Texas all the way until June when it will be time for him to be selected early on. Danny Hultzen – P Virginia Junior Danny Hultzen is a name that some college baseball fans and followers knew before this season began and is certainly one that all baseball fans will know concluding the year. Hultzen has posted a

9-1 record with a 1.19 ERA and an incredible 112 strikeouts through 11 games started this season. He has only given up 50 hits, 12 base-on balls and 10 earned runs in 75 and 2/3 innings of work and has a batting average against of .187. The 2010 ACC Pitcher of the Year can do other things on the field besides pitching including playing first base and in the outfield at an exceptional level. The 6’3” 200lbs lefty will be one of the first southpaw pitchers selected in this year’s draft.

Will Roberts – P Virginia Junior Will Roberts is the other half of Virginia’s dynamic duo that takes the hill and has led the Cavaliers to a 40-4 record (as of May 1) and being ranked number one in the country in every poll across the nation. Roberts has put together a stellar season so far with an 8-0 record, 1.61 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 10 starts. Roberts has also allowed just 46 hits, 11 earned runs, a ridiculous five base-on balls and a .213 average against in 61 and 1/3 innings pitched. Although the 6’4” 205lbs right-hand hurler may not be the top flight pitcher that his teammate Hultzen is, Roberts is still one of the best on the collegiate level right now.
There are other players who are putting up incredible numbers and having tremendous seasons including Jake Lowery from James Madison (19 HR), C.J. Cron from Utah (.469 average), George Mason’s Brig Tison (71 hits), Trevor Bauer from UCLA (127 strikeouts), Tyler Ray from Troy (9-0 record) and Georgia’s Tyler Maloof (13 saves). All have the potential to compete at the next level so get to know them. TAYLOR JUNGMANN 26
