Dawn Bonfield Chief Executive Women’s Engineering Society
Dawn Bonfield is Chief Executive of the Women’s Engineering Society. She is a materials engineer, graduating from Bath University with a Degree in Materials Science. She has worked in the atomic energy, automotive and aerospace sectors for AERE Harwell, Peugeot SA in Paris, British Aerospace in Bristol, and MBDA in Stevenage. She has also worked for the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and joined WES in 2011, becoming President in 2014. She became Chief Executive in 2015 – the first CEO that the Women’s Engineering Society has employed in its history. Dawn is a chartered engineer, a Fellow of WES, a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. She is also a member of the Worshipful Company of Engineers. She is passionate about supporting women in engineering, and is founder of National Women in Engineering Day, and the WES outreach activities ‘Magnificent Women’ and the ‘Sparxx’ project. Her Presidential theme was ‘women returners’ and she is working on a number of initiatives to support women to return to work after career breaks. Dawn has recently written a report for the Institution of Civil Engineers called Disruptive Diversity which has set out how this large institution can increase its diversity and inclusion to make a step change in attracting and retaining a diverse range of members. In addition to her work with WES Dawn is Patron of Alton Convent School, a member of the Institute of Materials Minerals and MiningWomen in Materials committee, a steering group member of the 100 Years of Women in Transport Campaign, a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering Diversity Concordat, an Advisory group member for the Science Museum’s Engineer Your Future careers exhibition in 2014, a judge for a number of competitions in engineering including the Talent2030 National Engineering Competition for Girls and the WISE / Evoke bursaries for girls in engineering. John is Director of Carbon Zero Consulting Ltd, which he founded in 2007. John is a Chartered Engineer with 34 years of international engineering project management and geosciences experience. His work has ranged from oil exploration and water resource management to renewable energy design and installation. He has managed projects to drill boreholes all over the world to extract oil, gas, water – and energy! In addition to water supply and water treatment projects for clients including Nestlé, Müller, Kellogg, major dairies and others, John has played a major role in the development of Ground Source Heating and Cooling (GSHC) technology. This has included close involvement in many of the UK’s larger public and private sector schemes. John is a council member of the GSHPA, engaged with the development of new standards GSHP installation. He is also a technical advisor to OFGEM and provided input to the Environment Agency Good Practice Guidelines, the BGS open loop screening tool and the CIBSE code of practice for WSHPs. John has been involved in many of the practical details of GSHC scheme design from feasibility through design to commissioning and monitoring of performance. Some of these schemes are the largest currently in place in the UK supplying heat (and cooling) to large public and private sector buildings such as schools, colleges, offices and retail developments. John introduced a new technology to the UK for measurement of soil thermal properties in situ. This is now being widely used as an aid to good shallow ground loop design. With an exemplary track record, John Findlay is well respected and well known in the water and GSHP sectors and can often to be found presenting at technical seminars and conferences. Neil has a wealth of experience in the industry, including as an instructor, a training manager and also within HR roles. Being apprentice trained himself means that Neil also has a thorough understanding of the value an apprenticeship brings to the manufacturing and engineering industries. Before EEF, he spent five years managing Higher Education programmes in the workplace and established a commercial business within Coventry University engaging with employers to develop and deliver a range of Higher Education services and qualifications through work based learning. Neil joined EEF in October 2014 as the Technology Training Centre Commercial Manager and has been responsible for leading the development and delivery of EEF’s range of technical services, helping business access a range of qualifications and technical skills training. As the Acting Director, Neil is also responsible

Brian began his career as an engineering apprentice at the Royal Ordinance Factory in County Durham. During his six years there, he successfully completed a BSc (H) in mechanical engineering. Since then Brian has worked primarily in the pharmaceutical sector, initially Smith and Nephews in Hull as a design engineer, and then spent time as a maintenance engineer, after leaving in 1986 to join GSK. While at GSK, Brian held a number of operational roles mainly in manufacturing operations and engineering; during this period he also became a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and completed a masters degree. In 2004, Brian took up the position of manufacturing director at a privately owned liquid pharmaceutical manufacturer in Leeds, and then in 2009 joined Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (DRL) who are an Indian owned pharmaceutical manufacturing company. Brian was recently elected to be a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and has taken a position as head of Process Manufacturing at Kirklees College and is working closely with a number Food and Drink manufacturers.
