Tony Ward Head of Fundraising

Tony had a fairly mainstream upbringing, attended school and college and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1989. In 1994, having had some eyesight problems he was diagnosed with a degenerative condition called retinitis pigmentosa (RP). This came as quite a shock with no prospect of treatment. At the time Tony came across Irish charity Fighting Blindness which is leading the way both nationally and internationally investing in medical research while also supporting the estimated 224,000 people in Ireland affected by severe vision loss and Tony has been involved in the charity in various capacities for over 20 years.

Having been involved in sport before his sight loss, in 1999 Tony took up athletics and began to participate again. Since then he has devoted a lot of time to training and competition. The rewards have been enormous, having represented Ireland at European and World level in middle distances and has completed 6 marathons, most recently in New York (November 2015). Highlights have included winning a bronze medal at the world cross championships in 2001 and gaining an A qualification standard in the marathon for the Athens Paralympics in 2004. As Fighting Blindness is over 90% funded through fundraising Tony often uses his athletic challenges to raise much needed funds and raised an amazing €30,000 as part of his New York marathon fundraising campaign. Since 1983 Fighting Blindness has invested over €15 million in 70 research projects based in Ireland. The progress has been fantastic with much international collaboration and the prospect, recently announced by Spark Therapeutics in Philadelphia that the first gene therapy for any medical condition could be in the area of restoring sight as one of its projects advances through clinical trials.

At BDO Ireland we help clients generate, protect and enhance their wealth. Established by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs, we are Ireland’s leading advisers to entrepreneurial and growing owner-managed businesses and the people behind them. Through our own professional expertise and by working directly with businesses, we’ve developed a unique insight into what makes a business successful. It’s this insight that makes us true business advisers, rather than mere financial consultants. We operate a partner-led approach in all our client dealings which ensures our partners and directors are highly accessible to clients. Each client is appointed a client liaison partner to oversee operations and communicate with you directly. BDO Ireland is a member of the international BDO network* the world’s fifth largest accounting network. We have an excellent partner to staff ratio, with almost 64,303 people working with our clients and offering challenging, ethical and practical advice from 1,408 offices in 154 territories.

Our core values are: commitment, professionalism, community, pride in and enjoyment of our work. In terms of legal structure we are a company limited by guarantee, having charitable status. Our board of Directors and Council is comprised of the Presidents and Provost of the Universities (and our Chief Executive, ex officio). Under the governance of our Council, we operate through a network of standing committees, sub committees and working groups, sharing information, approaches to problems and issues in addition to collaborating on projects designed to maximise the efficiency of resources across the sector. Our core funding is supplied on an annual subscription basis by our members, with the individual subscriptions being varied by the scale of enrolments in each institution. We are also in receipt of project funding from the European Commission, the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and the Higher Education Authority. www.iua.ie

We are the Irish universities’ representation, support and advocacy organisation for matters of shared sectoral concern. On representation, we are the collective interface between the universities and the state. We support the universities in developing sectoral policies and strategies and we provide some shared services in researcher mobility and internationalisation. We advocate on behalf of the universities to maximise the contribution of higher education in all its dimensions to society and the economy. In all these respects we complement the individual, autonomous efforts of our members.
