Dr Mark Heaton Nanotechnologist

My work in nanotech as carried out at Imperial College and Omicron was to fabricate a MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) microturbine, using the integrated circuit fabrication methods of printing, masking and prototyping with final laser machining to contour the microturbine in 3D. MEMS is part of the ideal to scale down conventional machines so that they can work with the miniaturization seen in the IC industry which in following Moore’s Law in double downscaling every 18 months is now at 3 Teraflops per chip. My device overcame some dimensional scaling issues in downscaling mechanical machines by using Axial airflow for low gas pressure sensitivity in a 3D microturbine that would be self-powering on top of being a sensor or micro energy generator. This

turbo nanomachine is mainly suited to long term environmental monitoring and is still the only working one in the world. Nanotech is helping to bring about the next stage in engineering science particularly in renewables. The main characteristic for renewables is that nanotech offers the possibility of a device with very high surface area in relation to size. This is an aid to electricity energy storage and gas storage and would be of use to my proposal for utilizing biogas.

Olive is currently qualified through Stanford University as a Self-Management Facilitator of Chronic Disease and is trained with NALA in literacy. She is an international fellow with Canterbury University (ECPD) and is also a patient reviewer with the BMJ. She is currently undertaking a Fellowship in Quality Improvement & Patient Safety in Healthcare with ISQua and starting a degree course in Community Leadership this year. Olive has sat on over ten national projects within the HSE, and is currently the team governance lead of the globally recognised World Health Innovation Summit. Working with a fantastic team, Olive has undertaken extensive national research with patients, carers & an immense range of health providers to develop an innovative personal health record system, the MediStori. This collaborative project has been supported by the HSE, IPU, An Taoiseach, Mr Enda Kenny and even the Clinton Global Initiative in the USA, to name but a few. It aims to provide the sustainable monitoring of a person’s health throughout life and aims to connect the gaps in healthcare, which exist mainly because of people working in unsustainable silos in design, development and implementation. The key to the success of the positive outputs of the research, were not just through it as a product – but through the way in which it was given to patients at the point of care. Olive O’Connor has gained extensive first-hand experience in the issues that can arise from manoeuvring within our health system, as both a patient and carer – through caring for her three children each have had complex conditions; caring for her dad who was on 22 medications; caring for her husband (who at age 42 suffered a stroke) and also herself as a cardiac and arthritic patient.

This salutatory lesson has remained with me , take time to observe ,consider all the possibilities before acting 35 years working in Dublin County Council and Fingal County Council developed a special knowledge of the planning system and how its interacted with the environment , during that period I was instrumental in getting the First Tree Preservation Order made at the Ward River Valley in Swords and many subsequent orders incl Santry Demesne and Wilson Road,Stillorgan . It was an exciting time to work under the watchful eye of the creator of the Dublin Park System Michael Lynch for whom generations to come have to thank for the foresight to seek the acquisition of Marley Park, Corkagh Park, Malahide Castle, Ardgillian ,Newbridge House , we played a long term game. In 2010 I retired from Fingal, took a short break and started my own business as a sole trader , 6 years later it is still developing . The green energy generated by SSE Airtricity at our 25 wind farms across the island powers almost 300,000† Irish homes. We’re also investing in new green energy generation to help protect Ireland’s energy for future generations to come. We’re currently building the 169MW Galway Wind Park in partnership with Coillte and when completed in 2017 it will become Ireland’s largest wind farm. We’ve commissioned Ireland’s newest and one of its cleanest power plants – the 460MW CCGT (combined cycle gas turbine) power station at Great Island, Co.
