The rise of the Digital Workplace
As new tools and services transform the traditional workplace into a digital one, the scene is set for what many commentators are calling a fourth industrial revolution. Treasa Doran, Head of Small Business in Vodafone talks to us about how this impacts Irish SMEs and how these companies can use new technology and communications systems to flourish in this new industrial age. What trends are you seeing in the small business landscape/market? “Technology uptake by businesses in Ireland has facilitated a profound shift across all industries and changed the commercial landscape beyond recognition in recent years. New business models have emerged causing a digital disruption that has reshaped production, consumption, transportation and delivery systems. Smartphones, tablets, Wi-Fi devices are all being deployed by staff that are working remotely, whether in sales
www.techconnect-live.com
or deliveries or working from home. Embracing technology has also been an important enabler to SMEs for activities such as; digital marketing, order processing and customer services. We’re moving towards a single technology ecosystem where 20 billion devices will be connected by 2020. This connectivity is changing working patterns. The digital workplace is the next major evolution in the way we work, fuelled by these broad changes in technology, but also workforce preferences, habits and demographics.
I believe that nurturing and facilitating a digital workplace is the next frontier for SMEs. Some have implemented this already and have created a digital or smart workplace that is the virtual equivalent of the physical workplace. The wider uptake of a digital workplace is a major opportunity for many SMEs across different industries. It requires strong planning and management due to its fundamental role in people’s productivity, engagement and working health but the benefits include improved business operations and employee and customer experiences.”
Sponsor Profile How can digital workplaces benefit SMEs? “While technology adoption by SMEs has the clear benefit of improving everyday processes, it is also critical to attracting and retaining talent, keeping employees engaged and productive, fostering a culture of innovation and staying ahead of competitors – many of whom were born digital. In my view, a key driver for SMEs to integrate digital practices is better operational agility. With the help of a more connected workforce, you can make better decisions faster and the cloud gives you this flexibility to scale digital resources up and down, as you see fit. Moreover, managed services take the effort out of maintaining and administering technology – so you can focus on more important things like building your customer base. At Vodafone, we believe the digital workplace brings benefits to three key areas of business. Firstly, by making your business operations more flexible, resilient and secure, you can respond quickly to changing market conditions and communication needs to take advantage of new opportunities. Secondly, by enabling employees to work cost effectively and securely, how, when and where they need to, your business can be more productive and get to market faster. Thirdly, by giving your customers the freedom to interact with you in the ways they want, and indeed expect in this changing market, you can build a stronger, more personal relationships. The result is a flexible, agile, and responsive organisation that is ready for anything. So when enabled by productivityboosting technology and seamless communications structures, SMEs – no matter where they are based or what industry they are in – can become digital workplaces and embrace the values it supports. It’s important to point out that the adoption of a digital
workplace doesn’t come without its challenges. Empowering employees to work anywhere requires a robust network and device security but it will help you retain the best talent and deliver more agile and responsive services. You will need to be flexible and it’s vital that you stay on top of the latest technologies to reap the benefits.” Have you seen any examples of businesses/customers embracing technology and change? “From a small business point of view, I really admire the vast array of companies that have set up and operate from our Gigabit hubs. The Gigabit Hub Initiative was launched in early 2017 by SIRO and Vodafone, who partnered on this unique initiative, which has the ambitious aim of connecting community and enterprise centres in 15 towns nationwide with free 1 Gigabit broadband. One year on from its launch, the initiative has supported business and enterprise hubs to attract new companies and encourage people to relocate to communities and towns around the country. The six hubs that have received super-fast gigabit broadband to date have expanded with 29 new companies moving to their premises, with an additional 80 people on site. The hubs are now planning further expansion, with an extra 200 jobs targeted over the next three years.
The Ludgate Hub in Skibbereen is just one of Vodafone’s Gigabit hubs from which Irish SMEs operate from.
Another example is one of our business customers, Firetrade.ie who are an established Irish SME, providing marketleading fire-fighting products and services for the past 20 years. They are constantly evolving and adapting to market trends and customer needs and believe that technology is a key enabler for them being ready for the future. They have partnered with us on our Unified Communications solution, One Net Business, which has transformed the way they work – by allowing staff to collaborate more efficiently when out of the office and ensuring always-on responsiveness to customers.” What role is Vodafone playing in creating digital workplaces? “No two digital workplaces are the same, but in a typical small business multiple tools and solutions come together to create a workplace with similar characteristics. Unified communications and collaboration tools provide a simple platform for the kind of anywhere, anytime teamwork that helps to drive innovation. We understand that to make the digital workplace a reality, businesses are searching for communication service providers that offer them reliable connectivity and cloud-based services. Access to data is also vital and Vodafone has built a portfolio of solutions to allow you stay connected to one another, to customers and to data, regardless of location. For example, our One Net Suite of Unified Communications solutions offers SMEs a cost effective way of combining all of their communications tools into one solution hosted on the cloud, here in Ireland.”

RDS, DUBLIN, May 30th 2018 If your idea or start-up business is ready for rapid growth, complete the entry form at www.TechConnect-Live.com to win a life-changing opportunity.
www.techconnect-live.com We will select six of the best entries to pitch in front of a live audience at the RDS on May 30th.
Prize One Three months of pre-acceleration in the London Academy Pre-acceleration includes: • Free office space in Central London for a maximum of four people for the pre-acceleration period • Access to Wayra’s best-in-class coaches, including experts in customer development, sales, investor readiness and pitching • A mentor from Wayra’s network • Invitations to Wayra events, including opportunities to pitch to Telefónica, O2 and Wayra partners where appropriate. Wayra would expect one key decision-maker from the company to be based in the London Academy on a full-time basis. The start-up would sign a pre-acceleration agreement, which would be valid for the duration of the pre-acceleration period (Sept-Nov 2018).
Agenda 11:00 Wayra UK Pitch Semi Final 1 12:00 Wayra UK Pitch Semi Final 2 13:00 Wayra UK Finalists Announced 16:00 Wayra UK Pitch Final with winners announced immediately after
Prize Two Fast track to Wayra Finals The finals of the Wayra Call are judged by a panel of investors from the Wayra network. This has previously included VCs from LocalGlobe, Octopus Ventures and Wayra investors-in-residence Ascension Ventures and Mustard Seed Impact. The start-up would complete an application form when the Call opens and then bypass early selection rounds to go straight through to the Finals, which will take place in November 2018. Before the Finals, the start-up would conduct a Skype session with members of the Wayra Acceleration Team and receive feedback.
Prize Three Bootcamp The start-up that wins this prize would be invited to the London Academy for a single day when there would be a number of coaches present, effectively becoming part of the Wayra cohort. The entrepreneur would attend sessions including masterclasses and 1:1s according to his/her specific needs.
Winning the Wayra pitch at Tech Connect last year was a pivotal point for Popertee. Our next planned market was UK and the prize enabled us to fast track this move to London at a price we could afford. From the get go, the Wayra team made us feel at home and our new office in the centre of London is just perfect - prospective customers always remark on it which makes us look great! We ended up on the Wayra accelerator with investment made by Telefonica into Popertee and cementing some seriously good working relationships with the company globally. Honestly thank you Tech Connect - I highly recommend any early stage start-up to apply for this pitch contest - if you are a prize winner, it can only lead to bigger opportunities in a new export market for your business.

POWERING PAYMENTS TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS ...ON-LINE, IN-STORE, ON THE MOVE Running a business has never been easy, but today’s always-on, mobile-first digital world presents new challenges for small and medium business owners. New technologies have transformed the way customers shop for and purchase products and services. Social media has replaced traditional advertising in radio and television, while debit and credit have replaced cash as the primary forms of payment. Nowadays, consumers also expect seamless, convenient interactions with businesses at every stage, from in-store to online. That’s why it’s important to ensure your payment processor can support your needs to keep customers coming back and boost your productivity and bottom line. Whether you’re launching an innovative new start-up or upgrading your business, here’s everything you need to know about setting up instore and eCommerce payments. Pick your payment platform wisely. The key to choosing the right payment solution from the wide variety available is to understand your business’ individual needs. For example, retail stores will have very different requirements than a restaurant, or an artisan who sells exclusively through a website. When it comes to in-store payments, countertop point-of-sale terminals are perfect for retail operations, quick-serve restaurants and professional services. They are all-in-one payment solutions that feature everything your business needs to easily and securely accept debit, credit and all other payment types, including contactless “tap” and mobile payments. Meanwhile, if you’re in an environment where you have to bring the point of payment to the customer, wireless point-of-sale terminals are ideal. They’re suited for restaurant/food service businesses, most retail operations, taxi/car services or for tradespeople who need a point-ofpayment on the go.
www.techconnect-live.com
For eCommerce payments, you’ll want to look for flexibility and the ability to accept credit, debit, PayPal, Apple Pay, Android Pay and more. Elavon’s ecommerce gateway offers businesses flexible options, whether you’re looking for a simple hosted payment page or an API to integrate payments seamlessly into your online experience. It’s perfect for strictly eCommerce operations as well as businesses that want to accept payments in a variety of ways, including in-store, mobile, online, order ahead, recurring billing, mail order and phone order. Security is key. With hackers, fraudsters and other risks, keeping your data secure and offering your customers top-of-the-line privacy and security of their personal information and payment card details is essential. When setting up in-store or eCommerce payments, a trusted and secure payment processor can give you and your customers’ peace of mind. As a leader in the processing payments industry for over 25 years, Elavon works to constantly provide customers with the latest technology standards, protecting your business with secure solutions. We also offer secure mobile and wireless payment processing solutions that offer encryption and tokenization capabilities to protect data both in transit and at rest. These security features also help ensure you comply with the established requirements for accepting or processing payment cards set out in the Payment Card
Industry Data Security Standards. Getting started is simple. One of the most common questions business owners have is how to get started and what information they need to provide. Fortunately, we work to make the process as smooth as possible. Once you’re set up, you can monitor your payment processing account online anytime using iMerchantConnect. This online portal allows you to view your monthly statements and detailed reports, manage chargebacks, and analyze your sales and payment trends to stay on top of your business. With Elavon, setting up payments is one thing you can effortlessly scratch off your to-do list. Our exclusive, turnkey solutions make it easy to securely accept payments across mobile, in-store and online platforms that seamlessly ingrate into your existing business model. which translates into lower running costs for Menzies’ IT infrastructure. Sungard AS was also able to meet specific challenges around the global operation of the Menzies business and existing technology and supplier arrangements.” Menzies is one of a diverse group of customers, proof that our solutions offer a broad range of benefits. Providing access to lower cost finance lies at the heart of the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland (SBCI) mission. The SBCI was set up in late 2014 to address issues SMEs were facing in the credit market in Ireland following the banking crisis. Specifically, the SBCI was put in place to secure sources of longterm lower cost funding for SMEs. SBCI finance is available to businesses in almost every sector of the Irish economy, and we encourage any SME that has not thought about an SBCI loan to consider the benefits our finance can bring.
