From the moment their great show mare Whatscookngoodlookin was confirmed in foal to legendary Invitation Only, Blair, Susan and Hillary Roberts have had high hopes for the foal. A few years later, that foal would grow up and exceed all their expectations.

Mare Power For Blair, Susan and Hillary Roberts, horses are both a passion and business they enjoy together as a family. In 2011, they established Capital Quarter Horses with the goal of creating a world class breeding operation centered around their World and Congress Champion mares. In 2014, they moved Capital Quarter Horses to their 84-acre ranch in Pilot Point, the heart of Texas horse country. “My family has been involved in horses for a lifetime,” said Hillary. “My grandfather was a ranch foreman and cattleman, my mom grew up in Colorado competing in youth and amateur rodeo, and I have been riding horses since I was old enough to sit in the saddle without falling off! After showing in Western Pleasure and All-Around events for many years, we started Capital Quarter Horses in 2011 under the guidance of Rusty and Katie Green and advisement of Butch and Patty Campbell. Since then, it has been the ride of a lifetime. We are very thankful for the incredible business and personal relationships we have developed as well as the success we have had with many fantastic horses. We have a great team at the ranch including Andy and Katie Cochran and our breeding manager Leslie Thomas Bailey. They are not only integral parts of the business but also part of our family.” Over the years, the Roberts have cultivated an extraordinary group of mares with whom they have won multiple World and Reserve World Championships, Congress Championships and Horse of the Year and Hall of Fame titles. Their world-class broodmare band includes World and Congress Champions Whatscookngoodlookin, Only A Breeze, Momma Knows Best, Johnnie On The Spot and Only Ever After. “We have been very fortunate with the mares we have had the opportunity to own and show,” said Hillary. “Luckily, they have all turned out to be great producers too. Each of our mares is a little different and brings a unique strength to our breeding program. We are proud of all they have accomplished both as show horses and broodmares.” Having established their mares as proven producers, the Roberts began to focus on their long-time goal of standing a stallion.

“If we were going to stand a stallion, it had to be a great one,” said Hillary. “We also wanted it be one we had bred and raised ourselves.

We really felt that Invitation Only would be the ideal cross on the matriarch of our broodmare band, Whatscookngoodlookin.” Breeding Whatscookngoodlookin to Invitation Only would result in a foal with a pedigree second to none. Invitation Only is the AQHA All Time Leading Sire of Point Earners, the All-Time Leading Sire of NSBA Money Earnings and the sire of 210 World Championships, Congress Championships and Reserve Championships. His foals have won more than $5.5 million. Whatscookngoodlookin is a 7-time World Champion, 11-time Congress Champion, NSBA Hall of Fame inductee, and has over $154,000 in lifetime earnings. Of her 14 foals who are age three or over, 12 are money earners with total offspring earnings of over $248,000. Whatscookngoodlookin is sired by A Good Machine, who is a multiple World and Congress Champion sire with offspring earnings of more than

$2.3 million, and out of a A Cooki For Certain who is sired by Certain Potential. With such an exceptional pedigree, everyone at Capital Quarter Horses was eagerly waiting for the arrival of this special foal. “You breed the mare and then really just have to cross your fingers,” said Hillary. “We were hoping for a colt and that’s exactly what we got, but then it is a waiting game again until you can start them under saddle and get them to the show pen. There are so many pieces that have to come together just the right way, so you try not to get too excited, but that’s hard when you’ve got a colt like Hay Goodlookn.”

All The Right Pieces Even as a baby Hay Goodlookn stood out from the rest of the weanlings in the Roberts’ pasture.

mind. When we started hauling Gus to the shows and putting him in those new and sometimes stressful environments, he really stepped up and proved to us that he was going to be a great stud.” Gus made his debut that fall at the AllAmerican Quarter Horse Congress in the Masters 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure, winning the Congress Championship and a check for $25,000. From there he went to the AQHA World Championship show in Oklahoma City where he loped his way to a World Championship in the 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure. Although the Roberts have won multiple World and Congress Championships,

“He was just so well made with the perfect amount of chrome,” said Hillary. “Watching him out in the pasture we always thought there was something special about him, but after we put him in the round pen for the first time as a yearling, that’s when we really got excited.” Andy Cochran, Capital Quarter Horses’ resident trainer, started Hay Goodlookn under saddle as a two-year-old. From the very first ride, he knew Gus had extraordinary potential. “Hay Goodlookn is an extremely talented horse,” said Andy. “Everything has always been very easy for him. What separates a good stud from a great stud is their

watching Gus compete at the Congress and World Show were moments that Hillary says her family will never forget. “It was surreal,” said Hillary. “Watching Gus win those two classes was the culmination of so many things we had been hoping for our breeding program. It also meant we were one step closer to fulfilling our dream of having a stallion who we believed could make an impact on other people’s breeding programs. Both wins were very special to our family and definitely our most exciting!” After the AQHA World Championship Show, with overwhelming interest from breeders, the decision was made to stand Gus to a limited book of mares for the 2020 breeding season. “We decided to limit his book to 55 mares, all private treaty, because we wanted to be sure that each of the foals in his first crop had the absolute best chance at success,” said Hillary. “His first book of mares included many World and Congress Champions and producers of that caliber. It was also important that we bred different types of mares so we could see how he complemented them and which bloodlines he crossed best with. Our goal was never to breed as many mares as possible his first year. Instead, our focus was on Gus’ long-term success. With a limited book we were able to prioritize exceptional customer service and develop personal relationships with each of our breeders. I think that approach served us well as we had many repeat breeders the next year.” Following the 2020 breeding season, the Roberts made the decision to take Gus to the NSBA World

Championship Show and give Hillary the opportunity to show him in the non-pro. “Once Gus finished breeding Andy started riding him again and it was like he had never missed a day,” said Hillary. “I rode him a few times and really wanted the chance to show him. The NSBA World Show was his first show after breeding season and I was the first one to show him there. It’s not always easy to take a stallion from the breeding shed to the show arena but he was perfect.” Hillary showed Hay Goodlookn to win the NSBA World Championship and BCF Championship in 3-Year-Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure. Gus was also the NSBA Reserve World Champion and BCF Reserve Champion in the 3-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure with Andy. “Showing Gus in the Non-Pro 3-Year-Old Western Pleasure classes at the NSBA World Show will forever be a highlight in my career,” said Hillary. “I was definitely nervous about showing him because it was his first show back since breeding, but he proved just how good minded he is and allowed me show him exactly how I wanted to in a very crowded pen.” Hay Goodlookn had already proved how talented he is, but his success with Hillary in the Non-Pro events was a testament to his mind. “Winning a Congress and World Championship speaks volumes to what a great horse Gus is,” said Andy. “But for Hillary to show him and win right after he finished his first breeding season speaks volumes about how great minded he is.” With the 2020 All-American Quarter Horse Congress cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the next time Hay Goodlookn showed was at the AQHA World Championship Show where he was Reserve Champion in the 3-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure Stakes and fourth in the extremely competitive Junior Western Pleasure. “Hay Goodlookn’s three-year-old year was a lot of fun for all of us,” said Hillary. “He’s a show horse, just like his mother was. Every time he went in the arena, he gave us his very best.”

exporting to Australia to show and breed.

“So far what we have seen is that his foals are all built right,” said Hillary. “They have short pasterns, big hips, short backs and their necks tie in the way you want. They are built for the job. A lot of people have also told me how great minded they are. That’s been my experience with ours as well.”

“I was helping Aaron Moses at the 2019 Congress, the year Hay Goodlookn won the Masters,” said Kane. “We were stalled in the same aisle as Capital Quarter Horses, so I was able to watch Andy prepare Gus. I loved his strength, maturity, mind, and most of all was impressed that he jogs just as good as he lopes. After Hay Goodlookn’s first foal crop arrived, Adam Kober posted a photo on Facebook of a colt out of Congress Champion Vital Lines Are Red. We immediately called him and purchased the colt, sight unseen over the phone. With so many of Whatscookngoodlookin’s foals making great show horses in a variety of events, and such a strong maternal line with VS Code Red, Vital Signs Are Good, Lope The Line, Lazy Loper and Zipped Tight, we really felt like this colt was worth taking a chance on.”

Nancy Ditty bred two mares to Hay Goodlookn his first year, Congress Champions and World and Congress Champion producers Troubles A Blazin and Huntin For A Cowboy. “My Hay Goodlookn foals are very well made and have great temperaments,” said Nancy. “Even my husband, Seth, who is really not into the horses talks about how good minded they are. You can do anything with them. I dressed them up for Christmas with hats and beads and they couldn’t have cared less. On top of that they are really cute movers.” Earlier this year Kane Skopp and his customers Bruce and Kathy Hegan purchased a Hay Goodlookn colt out of Congress Champion Vital Lines Are Red, who they will be

Because of Covid, Kane was not able to travel to the United States to see the colt until just a few weeks ago. After seeing him in person, Kane is even more excited about his future. “He is going to be a great addition to our breeding program,” said Kane. “He is well-built and balanced and

overall, just a very attractive colt. He looks and moves just as good as he is bred.” Rusty and Katie Green, who trained and showed Gus’ dam Whatscookngoodlookin throughout her show career have purchased several foals from Hay Goodlookn’s first crop. “Whatscookngoodlookin was a huge part of our career,” said Katie. “She and Rusty had a unique understanding of one another, it was almost like she was meant for Rusty. The bond he had with ‘Candi’ is part of what made them so great. We have been fortunate to have had a lot of great horses, and she is at the top of the list. When Hay Goodlookn began his breeding career, the prospect of having a little piece of Candi was too hard to pass up. We started searching and found three yearlings that we are really excited about. Whatscookngoodlookin changed the industry in the show pen and now she’s doing the same as a producer. The only other mare you can say that about is Vital Signs Are Good. Looking at his babies so far, I think Hay Goodlookn is on track to follow in his momma’s footsteps. We feel blessed to have been a small piece of the puzzle and hope that we can continue to be a part of the legacy.”

Capital Quarter Horses also has several of their own yearlings sired by their World and Congress Champion stallion who they are looking forward to showing in the future. “We have five yearlings sired by Gus here at the ranch,” said Hillary. “They all have their sire’s big hip and short back, but the two that really stand out are a double registered filly out of World and Congress Champion Johnnie On The Spot and a chestnut filly out of World and Congress Champion Momma Knows Best. Those two are just incredible. We are very excited about all the Gus babies and are grateful for the support from breeders, owners, and trainers. We are definitely excited for the future.” In addition to Premier Sires, Hay Goodlookn is enrolled in the NSBA BCF and Stallion Incentive Fund, APHA Breeders Trust, Southern Belle, Super Sires and West Coast Breeders. He is standing the 2022 breeding season at Capital Quarter Horses. For more information or to request a contract, you can contact Hillary Roberts at 405-664-8516 or hillary@ capitalqh.com.
