T
hink of What’s On Perth as like having a local in your pocket. We know our city inside and out and whether you’re a first-time visitor, or have lived here for years, What’s On Perth is an invaluable guide to what’s happening in the best capital city on earth (OK, we’re probably biased). In this issue, we’re giving winter the old heave-ho and heading on into town to enjoy an amazing array of events, new bars and restaurants and world class entertainment. If you’ve never been before, we recommend you visit Optus Stadium (our Star Attraction and cover story) – it’s not only the home to the big sporting and showbiz events, it’s also a great place to visit in its own right. There’s always plenty going on in the city too if you’re a foodie or fan of the perfect cocktail. Our resident Bar Hop guru, Sloane Carvell, has visited W.Churchill and Santini Bar - and she can’t recommend their pursuit of the perfect negroni highly enough. I had a world-class dinner at David
WELCOME Thompson’s Long Chim Perth, a spicy feast that’s not for the faint-hearted. We’ve got interviews with Paulini, star of Hair and Mansionair, who have just released a new album. If you love live music, make sure you head to RAC Arena in September to catch South Australia’s finest legends, Hilltop Hoods, in action. If you’re heading out of town, we’ve got ideas about how to spend time in Fremantle, the Swan Valley and the Sunset Coast. We’ve put all our local knowledge into this guide, and hope that you’ll enjoy reading about our city and surrounding areas. If you have time, why not head south to Margaret River or north to the Coral Coast or Broome? It’ll be an experience you never forget. We hope you enjoy your stay.

Benjamin Barker once had it all; but tragedy, heartache and a brutal act of betrayal lead him into a downward spiral of despair. Determined to avenge his loved ones, Barker returns to London and assumes a new identity, Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Together with the deranged pie-maker Mrs Lovett, he plots his revenge on those who have exiled them to society’s outer margins. Starring Ben Mingay and Antoinette Halloran, this tragic tale of treachery, deception and revenge will be magnificently brought together in Stephen Sondheim’s haunting score and will resonate with audiences long after the meat grinder has stopped turning.

Don’t miss your chance to see the Australian Boomers NBA superstars take on Canada in Perth this August.
T
he Australian Boomers, featuring their NBA superstars, will return to Perth this August to take on a star-studded Canada outfit in a two-game series at RAC Arena with tickets now on sale from Ticketek. These two massive games, to be played on Friday August 16 and Saturday August 17, will be the first time the Boomers have played in Perth since 2014 and will serve as important preparations ahead of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup to be contested in China later that month. The Boomers line-up is set to feature the strongest Australian team ever assembled, including Ben Simmons (Philadelphia 76ers), Patty Mills (San Antonio Spurs), Joe Ingles (Utah Jazz), Andrew Bogut (Golden State Warriors), Aron Baynes (Boston Celtics), Matt Dellavedova (Cleveland Cavaliers), Jonah Bolden (Philadelphia
30
76ers) and Deng Adel (Cleveland Cavaliers). Basketball Australia Chairman, Ned Coten said: “We are thrilled to bring the Boomers back to Perth. The Perth basketball community and fans at large in Western Australia are some of the most dedicated supporters in the country and we have no doubt that the RAC Arena will be sold out for both games in August.” Canada is yet to announce their 12-man World Cup roster that will play in Perth, however this line-up could include NBA stars such as Andrew Wiggins (Minnesota Timberwolves), Tristan Thompson (Cleveland Cavaliers), Kelly Olynyk (Miami Heat), Cory Joseph (Indiana Pacers), Shai Gilgeous-Hamilton (Los Angeles Clippers) and much-hyped college basketballer RJ Barrett. Australian Boomers head coach
Andrej Lemanis said: “I’m excited that the Boomers get to return to Perth, it’s such a wonderful basketball community. We see them get behind the Wildcats year in and year out and the city has a great basketball culture so I’m looking forward to getting into the RAC Arena again. “It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to play warm-up games on home soil against quality opposition. It’s great reward for the Australian fans and we know there will be a lot of excitement surrounding the games, but as a team, we need to focus and utilise these games to learn about ourselves before the World Cup begins.” Following these games in Perth, the eyes of the world turn to
TEG CEO Geoff Jones said: “As the country’s pre-eminent promoter of international sport, TEG Live is delighted to be bringing the biggest stars in basketball to Australia this August. Basketball in Australia is enjoying unprecedent popularity and this is in no small part to the number of Aussies playing in the NBA, which are the same stars who will be representing the Boomers in both Perth and Melbourne.” Western Australian sports fans will not want to miss these two games at RAC Arena on August 16 and August 17, with tickets now available from ticketek.com.au.
The Boomers line-up is set to feature the strongest Australian team ever assembled. Melbourne when the Boomers take on current world champions and Olympic gold medallists, USA Basketball in front of over 110,000 fans across two massive games at Marvel Stadium. Not since the 2000 Sydney Olympics has Australia seen such high-quality men’s international basketball on these shores, with TEG Live playing a central role in delivering these four games, in addition to USA Basketball vs Canada at Qudos Bank Arena on August 26.

LONG CHIM PERTH
M
aa long chim means to come sample and taste - and that’s just what me and two girlfriends did on a midweek in early autumn. The place was busy too busy to fit us in the main room but we were more than happy to perch at our table near the bar instead. Although I lived in Phuket many moons ago, I could in no way claim to know my way around such an authentic Thai menu. Fortunately the helpful staff were up to the challenge
32
of presenting us with as many dishes as we could possibly consume for the duration of our meal, with a broad remit of ‘we’ll eat anything’. We kicked things off with some cured pork sausages, plump as toddlers’ fingers and Chiang Mai chicken larp. I’d had that before and was rightly respectful of its superloaded spice kick. Cooling cabbage leaves on the side helped salve our flaming mouths somewhat. We devoured a bowlful of crunchy prawns, heads and all. Presentation isn’t the point with Long Chim’s dishes; it’s all about flavour and authenticity. Onto our mains and the food just kept coming. I loved the sour orange fish curry, the piquant amber soupy bowl raising the bar high with its delicate chunks of fish lurking within. We had a duck egg omelette the size of a flat cap on the side along with some stir fried veg, and from the grill, some king sized Exmouth prawns, redolent of the charcoal they’d been seared over. If you fancy more grilled delicacies, try the Maa Long Chim Pao - you get four grilled items of your choice with cucumber relish and rice for $70. We slurped Howard Park Riesling as if there was no tomorrow (reader, there was) - and some how scoffed
the lot without much effort. The vibe in Long Chim is superb; inclusive, a
bit naughty, and probably best enjoyed with coconspirators like me and my mates. Best on ground? That chicken larp will live on long in the memory. Unmissable. Long Chim Perth, Lower Ground Level, Cnr St Georges Terrace and Barrack Street. You can also enter it via the Treasury building if you’re staying at the hotel. Just follow the signs. Chicken Larp

Now in its 11th year, the Bartender of the Year competition challenges bartenders across the nation to submit their cocktail creations using spirits from Diageo’s reserve portfolio; Ketel One Vodka, Tanqueray No. 10 Gin and Talisker 10 Year Old Single Malt Whisky. Entrants are encouraged to exhibit creativity, innovation and expertise as they battle it out to become the nation’s best bartender and represent Australia in the global finals held in Glasgow later this year. Good luck to all the Perth finalists!
LEEDERVILLE VILLAGE SQUARE OPENS The Leederville Village Square is complete, and the road has been reopened, launching the new space earlier in June. “The vision for the area was a pedestrian friendly space for cars, cyclists and people to share, that can easily be closed and turned into a space for community events,” said Mayor Emma Cole. Construction of the space started in March. Red brick paving raised the street to footpath level, two new trees George Cooper were added for extra shade, power was connected and retractable bollards placed in the road for community events and festivals. The total cost for the project was $275,000 with works undertaken by the City of Vincent. The square was one of the public open space projects announced in last year’s City budget. “I think the final result and look of Leederville Village Square is fantastic. The red brick paving responds so well to the beautiful old buildings in this space, the trees provide a really nice canopy and the level surface creates a seamless transition between the surrounding businesses. It enhances the unique character and atmosphere of this part of Leederville,” said Mayor Cole. George Cooper “This stretch of Newcastle Street between Carr and Oxford Streets is a great location for community
street parties and events, such as the recent Leedypalooza and Leedy Streets Open events. It presents many new opportunities to explore, and Leederville Connect have great ideas for activating the Village Square.”
DEADLY AND DELICIOUS GEORGE COOPER OF Tiller Dining will be hosting his ‘Garden of Eatin’ at Cathedral Square in July, creating a decadent seven-course degustation Dinner for Sinners. Each course will be matched to one of the seven deadly sins, using produce grown on the Tiller farm in Yallingup Siding, Margaret River, and paired to wines from all over WA. Served on long tables in a beautiful marquee overlooking St George’s Cathedral, it’s the perfect spot for some sinful indulgence. Built in 1902 as a community resource for the Irish Catholics it was used primarily as space for celebratory gatherings. The hall takes its name from the Latin word for Ireland. Reflecting on this rich history the inspiration is to explore the Roman connection. As a result, Roman techniques and traditions take the focus of the menu. Uncomplicated and pure are the cornerstones of the kitchen philosophy, delivering local ingredients with a very unique Roman flavour. The Guy Grossi-led restaurant is one for all Italian food lovers to notch up on their must-do list. Don’t miss: Cacio e Pepe - a deceptively simple pasta dish of tonarelli, pecorino and pepper. 40
Tiny’s
TINY’S Part of the newly developed QV1 Plaza, Tiny’s is situated in the old Bar One site, and opens into a large indoor and alfresco bar area, restaurant, and specialty liquor emporium. Eclectic food fuels the good times (and there will be many): fresh vegetables and herbs from the kitchen’s rooftop garden, and protein hits roasted on Tiny’s custommade wood-fire grill and rotisserie. The drinks menu offers craft beer, seasonal cocktails and small batch wines, while Tiny’s Liquor Emporium will serve over 300 wines and a range of spirits. Tiny’s is the new meeting place for socialising and entertaining in the CBD. You’ll see solo acoustic acts showcasing re-imagined covers and DJs playing laid-back funk, hip-hop, and nostalgic classics midweek while at the end of the week, DJs and resident house bands turn up the entertainment, and bringing the good times into the weekend. Don’t miss Sticky blood plum-glazed beef intercostal sticks and roasted prawns with bottarga butter and burnt chilli.

ou know a bar named after Winston Churchill, who had a penchant for good liquor, is going to be filled with great drinks. The gorgeous Churchill era-inspired bar features ministerial green tiles, a stately wooden bar and brass desk lamps add mood and ambience. The wine list features great Australian producers including Koerner, Crft, Las Vino and Brash Higgins as well as select international wines. A girls night requires a nice bottle of red and we settle on the gorgeous Alpha Box and Dice Rebel Rebel Montepulciano from McLaren Vale, South Australia to share

Saturday night is Gin and Jazz night and, with the gorgeous jazz songstress Allira Wilson and her band singing Bye Bye Blackbird, we say cheerio to the worries of the week and have a proper catch-up. Don’t forget to try one of the gin-based cocktails or house specialty cocktails. Verdict: A great place to drink cocktails and slide into the weekend with good booze and jazz. Saturday’s between 8-9 pm Gin and Tonicas are $15 Don’t Miss: The Archie Rose Distillers Gin and Tonica with pear, native pepper berry, Honey and Fevertree Indian tonic. bottles. For those who are lovers of wine like me, it has a drool-worthy glass-enclosed wine cellar you can peer into. With Italian-inspired wine greats like barbera, trebbiano and corvinas on the list from both Australia and Italy, and Italian-inspired bites, it’s an ideal date night spot or a quiet night out with the best friend who, on this visit, is my date too. Service is slick and helpful, so I order a classic negroni. Negronis have only three ingredients: gin, vermouth rosso, and Campari. They sound simple to make but can easily go bad. No such fear at Santini. This Negroni is perfectly balanced and one of the of the best
I’ve ever had – anywhere. Bar bites range from small plates of dishes like crostini and stuffed zucchini blossoms to larger plates, like wood-roasted pork jowl. Neapolitan-style pizzas are a specialty here and we order the San Marzano tomatoes and basil pizza which has the lightest crust and is crisp and delicious. A visit here will make you want to book a trip to the Italian coast to the sun and sea. Verdict: A great place to date night, drink cocktails or late-night supper. Don’t Miss: Pizza and negroni chasers for the win. Try the Manhattan too. Hours: Monday – Sunday 5.30-11 pm Price: Cocktails starting from $16 49

TOP THINGS TO DO IN FREO You’ll never have to worry about running out of things to do in Fremantle. But for those who want a quick snapshot, here is the quintessential list of top attractions. Don’t worry if you can’t fit it all in a single day, this is the kind of place worth taking a little extra time to fall in love with.
1. FREMANTLE FISHING BOAT HARBOUR As Perth’s premier destination for tourists and locals, the laid-back atmosphere of Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour is perfect for your next day out or holiday escape. Uniquely positioned between the ocean and the sea, the working harbour is surrounded by world-class restaurants featuring some of WA’s freshest seafood as well as bars, entertainment and accommodation.
2. FREMANTLE ARTS CENTRE Housed in a gothic heritage building in Fremantle’s east end, Fremantle Arts Centre showcases free exhibitions, and free and ticketed concerts and events from international, national and local artists. It’s also home to Canvas Café, beautiful grounds, and the FOUND Shop, which sells the largest range of WA-designed wares.
3. FREMANTLE MARKETS Step inside the Fremantle Markets and

enjoy the distinctive atmosphere of over a 100-years of vibrant culture and heritage. Now boasting over 150 stalls, the Fremantle Markets is a must-see for locals and tourists alike. Aside from being a great place to shop, it’s also one of the best places to purchase authentic street food.
4. FREMANTLE PRISON Built in 1857 and decommissioned in 1991, UNESCO World Heritage Listed Site, Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s most fascinating and significant cultural attractions. With a choice of intriguing day tours, spine-chilling torchlight tours

and ‘extreme heritage’ tunnel tour adventures, there is something for everyone – you can even search for your convict ancestors on the fully interactive Convict Database.
5. LITTLE CREATURES BREWERY Little Creatures Brewery is something of a brewing institution at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour. This is a fully operational brewery so don’t be surprised to see giant tanks and brewers working, as well as the unmistakable aroma of beers mashing in. It’s also the perfect place to grab a pint while the kids play in the undercover sandpit.

6. ROTTNEST ISLAND Fremantle is the gateway to Rottnest Island, Western Australia’s very own island getaway, featuring a casual atmosphere, picturesque scenery and some of the world’s finest beaches and bays. It’s a special place for Western Australians and a popular destination for interstate and international visitors, it’s a 25 minute ferry ride from B Shed on Victoria Quay.

9. WA SHIPWRECKS MUSEUM
The Round House is the oldest public building in WA. The twelve-sided building was built in 1831 and was used until 1886 to house locals who were on the wrong side of the law. Today, visitors can take a tour and imagine the hardships faced by convicts, prisoners and gaolers alike.
The WA Shipwrecks Museum is the foremost maritime archaeology museum in the southern hemisphere and the most visited museum in Western Australia. Steeped in history, the galleries house hundreds of relics from ships wrecked along Western Australia’s treacherous coastline, including the original timbers from the Batavia (wrecked in 1629). 10. Esplanade Youth Plaza & Reserve In the centre of Fremantle is the Esplanade Reserve - a large parkland area identified by tall Norfolk Pines. Inside its grounds you’ll find the Esplanade Youth Plaza, Carriage Café, Tourist Wheel Fremantle and a large playground area, complete with a climbing frame for children to play on. It’s an urban oasis.
8. WA MARITIME MUSEUM Perched on the Indian Ocean’s shore, the WA Maritime Museum houses several unique galleries that explore WA’s relationship with the sea. Take a tour of the submarine HMAS Ovens and come and see the legendary America’s Cup winning yacht Australia II and many other iconic vessels from WA’s extensive maritime history. You’ll also see WA’s own tall ship the STS Leeuwin berthed alongside. 78

Best of all, it’s located just 19 kilometres off the coast of Fremantle. It’s a special place for Western Australians and a popular destination for interstate and international visitors. Mediterranean-style climate and Indigenous flora and fauna of this Island provide the backdrop to a special holiday experience. Take a day trip to Rottnest (or Rotto as the locals call it), or book a stay for a few days or more. It’ll be a memorable part of any visit to Perth.
DON’T MISS . . . See food and eat it ...by Bev Ligman Do yourself a summer favour. Grab your bestie, boyfriend or partner and get yourself over to Rotto for Rottnest Cruises’ Wild Seafood Experience. The day starts as any day to Rotto should, jumping aboard a SeaLink ferry to get to the island. Then of course there’s the obligatory ‘snack’ pie from the Rotto Bakery to line your stomach and by 11am you’re all set to go on the seafood cruise of a lifetime. The Wild Seafood experience is fully interactive – they’ve put the cray pots out, but you have to haul them back in and catch your own lunch. It’s hard work – but let’s face it you’ve already had a couple of Champagnes by this time so you’re basically up for anything! Once lunch is caught (and everyone gets a go at pulling up a cray pot) it’s time for a swim off the back of the boat. Delightful. My bestie and I went on a blisteringly hot 40-degree day so we couldn’t wait to throw ourselves into the deep blue sea and cool down. Then just when you think things couldn’t get any better, you’re served fresh oysters and a Champagne as you dry off from your dip. Yep this, my friends, is living. 80
The Rottnest Cruise staff are brilliant, they knew my bestie and I both got seasick so they made sure to tell us where not to sit on the boat when it was rocky and they also filled up our glass whenever they were empty. Definitely our kind of people. For lunch a long table is set up on the boat and you tuck into fresh crab, prawns, pickled octopus, seafood tacos and a whole bunch of amazing salads. You definitely won’t leave this cruise hungry. Then the crays are cooked on the BBQ right in front of you. Honestly, if they were any fresher, .you’d slap their face. Whether you’re a tourist, a local who hasn’t been to Rotto for a while or you’re showing someone WA’s best bits, the Wild Seafood Experience is the perfect activity. The cruise itself is only three hours long so you’re not on a boat the whole day and, as, there’s only about 15 people on board, it never feels cramped or crowded. And because you don’t go out that far or stay out that long, it really is suitable for all ages, so why not make it a family day out? The Wild Seafood Experience is $175 for adults and $125 for children. To book visit rottnestcruises.com/
See the sealife From January 2019, experience Rottnest’s pristine, crystal waters from above and below on a glass bottom sea kayaking tour. Your tour will start with a short bus ride to the calmest bay on the island arriving asthe guides unload the kayaks, fit everyone for a life jacket and set off on an adventure. Paddle into secluded bays, inaccessible to those on the land and too shallow for those on a boat. Even if you have been going to Rottnest for years, you have probably never seen it like this. The clear floored kayaks also offer guests a window into the world below. See colourful marine life, coral, and fascinating reef formations while staying (relatively) high and dry. The glass bottom sea kayaking tours are for those looking for an active, yet relaxed experience of the island. Yes, you will need your sense of adventure, but you do not need to be an elite athlete. If you have decent upper body strength and are capable of sitting in a small craft for two hours, then you can do this.Book your tour at rottnestkayak.com.au or at the Rottnest Island Visitors Centre.

First records of human occupation of Rottnest Island date back more than 6,500 years ago when the island was still attached to the mainland, and Aboriginal people inhabited the area. ON THE RECORD...
PAULINI Paulini is one of Australia’s most uniquely talented performers. The Fijian-born singer-songwriter first enthralled the nation on the inaugural series of Australian Idol. Audiences instantly fell in love with Paulini’s impressive five-octave range and since then she has forged a hugely successful career. In 2017 she played the lead role of Rachel Marron in the The Bodyguard throughout Australia for a year. Paulini is set to start in Hair at His Majesty’s Theatre, Perth. 1. The first album I ever bought was Mariah Carey’s debut album. I remember hearing her voice and being completely blown away - especially with ‘Vision of Love’. Whitney Houston had already paved the way as one of the most incredible female vocalists I’d ever heard, and I remember feeling the same goosebumps when I played Mariah’s album for the first time, I was so inspired! 2. When I was 10, I discovered my voice when I joined a children’s choir at church. I remember stepping out on stage for the first time when entering at talent quest at our local church and feeling absolutely free. It was then that I had an understanding of the gift that was given to me and being able to share such powerful songs for my family and friends in the audience was just incredible. 86
3. At the age of 16, I entered a proper singing competition called Starstruck and, to my surprise, I won. That’s where Guy Sebastian and I actually first met. I knew at that moment what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. There’s was no doubt in my mind, I would follow any opportunity to enter contests and to sing any chance I could! Fate eventually brought me to the Australian Idol stage and the rest is history…
7. My favourite song is Faith Evans’ ‘Again’ - I just love this song and will still play it any chance I can. The tone of her voice is like no other and lyrically it still elevates me every time.
4. In my house growing up as the youngest of all six of my brothers and sisters, our home was always filled with music. I can never remember a time where gospel or soul music wasn’t playing in the house. Singing was in all of our blood, and a way to always bring us together. It was, and still is a huge part of all us.
9. If I was on a desert island, my three albums would be Michael Jackson’s Thriller, an 80s compilation with Toto’s Africa, The Eagles’ Hotel California and Prince’s When Doves Cry. And a Whitney Houston Greatest Hits - is bringing a Greatest Hits cheating? I’m so predictable!
5. My favourite album of all time is still Whitney Houston’s The Bodyguard soundtrack. I know it sounds cliché having had the incredible opportunity to play my dream role in the musical last year - but seriously, those six songs changed me. The texture and flawlessness of her voice in those epic ballads are iconic and will forever stand the test of time.
8. Anything from R&B 90s era is my absolute go-to when I get a night out with my girls. When I’m at home chilling, Sade, Sade, Sade. And when I’m feeling in a musical theatre vibe - I pop on The Dreamgirls soundtrack.
HAIR, His Majesty’s Theatre, from August 22 to September 1. Visit hairthemusical.com.au
6. This week I’m totally vibing Anderson Paak - he’s this incredible multi-instrumentalist from California. I love the way he’s fusing styles in such an original way. 87

SHADOW BOXING Dubbed the quiet achievers in Australian music, Mansionair’s debut album unusually comes on the back of an already successful career. By ARA JANSEN.
F
ew bands can brag that in five years they’ve released seven hit singles without having released an album. Meet Mansionair, the Sydney trio of Jack Froggatt, Lachlan Bostock, and Alex Nicholls whose dreamy electronica has lifted them above the fray. Since forming in 2014 they’ve chalked up more than 130 million streams, with nearly 30 million alone for their song Astronaut. In April the band played a coveted spot at Coachella, one of six Australian names, including WA’s Tame Impala, Rufus Du Sol and Anna Lunoe. The band played American dates around their appearance and have returned to Australia to continue touring. Now, their debut album Shadowboxer will continue the musical conversation with wide-ranging soundscapes contemplating themes which range from mental health to sickness, relationship breakdowns and coming-of-age struggles. Proud of having made a complete album after a successful stream of singles, singer and songwriter Jack Froggatt says it’s a long process to live life, create songs from those adventures and lessons and then record them. Sometimes it feels like a very long date – and not always with the results you want. Three years in the making, Shadowboxer was written and selfproduced in living rooms, studios, a garage in inner-city Sydney and finally
a cabin in the Californian mountains – in between travelling and touring. It’s the culmination of a journey that started with a viral hit single called Hold Me Down and led to high profile collaborations, a Grammynomination, ARIA and Billboard charting singles and several major support tours (CHVRCHES, Florence & The Machine, London Grammar and Bob Moses). Importantly to Froggatt, it’s an album which reflects everything the band were going through personally and creatively. “Some of these songs have taken a long time to come to fruition,” he says. “Touring also allowed us to road test them. That’s probably one of the reasons it took so long but also what helped the songs in a remarkable way. “We wanted to give people who have been listening from the start something to really chew on. Initially we thought we were done at 10 tracks and then at the end of last year we decided to write more and ended up with 16.” Froggatt calls it a big conversation which is both strong and vulnerable, full of shadows and light. “As a songwriter I’ve always liked the idea that writing music and lyrics helps me and the listeners make sense of the world. The album has some darker shades but also shows there’s always a glimmer of hope.” Shadowboxer is out now through Liberation Records.

erth is in the middle of an accommodation bonanza for all budgets. Never before have so many rooms been available for so many price brackets. Thanks to the recent creation of so many new venues - the six-star Crown Towers and much-lauded The Treasury being the most notable - the boom isn’t over yet. With 2019 now in full swing, an additional 720 rooms will become available. Some 24 new hotels will open in and around Perth over the next three years, adding almost 4,000 rooms to the local market at a cost of more than $3 billion. Existing hotels like the Fraser Suites and the new DoubleTree by Hilton Perth in Northbridge right in the heart of Perth’s party zone continue to offer visitors top quality accommodation and dining options. If you’re heading out of the city to the Margaret River region (a three and a half hour drive) or the newly christened Bunbury Geographe region, just two hours from the CBD, there’s a wide choice again. allowing the designers to create a space that is modern, stylish, and distinctly Australian. The 80 guest rooms are highlighted by the continuation of the natural timber features, large windows and earthy tones that exude a modern, home-like feel to the interiors. Sleek, well-appointed bathrooms are finished in slate grey tiles with rain showers; bedrooms feature plush beds and linens, coffee and tea service, in-room safes, Smart TV, bar fridge and complimentary Wi-Fi. Upper Quay-facing rooms feature bay windows with relaxing window seats from which to enjoy the waterfront’s spectacular views. There’s a brand new roof bar - HQ Bar & Kitchen - and a lobby sidewalk eatery, Community at Quay. Look out for artist Chris Nixon’s abstract entry piece - the letters QuUAY from the outline for the patterns he’s created. Another relative newbie, QT Perth, offers a chic new industrial approach to luxe in the heart of the city. And its rooftop bar is the hippest place in town for a cocktail as the sun goes down. The rooms are luxurious and quirky - a real change up from the usual place to rest your head.
