Like its predecessor, released in 1996, it deals with bands from the far side of fluffiness to the heavy edge of death/black metal, stretching out towards prog, blues and hardcore. ”Volume II” contains close to 1000 bands of which 660 are new entries and the rest are updates of bands from the first book. A chapter with names and discographies of the remaining 700 bands from the first edition is also featured. The information presented for each band includes hometown, members, biography, musical description and a discography including year, format, title, label and catalogue number. All of it topped off with nice photos and record covers. Janne Stark, one of Europe’s top journalists in the field, has again made an astonishing research effort. It was back in 1983 and I was just a pure rock kid. I sent my very first letter overseas and a few weeks later, I received a cassette from Overdrive’s lead guitarist Janne Stark. I don’t hesitate to say everything with me and hard rock started with that tape sent by Janne. There’s no doubt he helped shrink the distance between one Japanese kid and the rest of the world with rock music. The music from Sweden is still a bit mystifying to us in Japan, even if we feel we all live so close now in this new technology era. Maybe we have something in common deep inside our souls, although nobody can really explain what it is. I personally call Janne ”The Swedish Night Wolf” as he only sleeps three hours a night when he has a project going on that has to do with the music he loves. He has to accomplish other things, too, as a husband, a father of two daughters, a technical engineer and a successful rocker – all at the same time. Also working as a journalist for periodicals FUZZ, Sweden Rock Magazine and Rock It. Editor and Art Director for the Sweden Rock Festival-magazine. Former member of recording bands Paradize and Overdrive, currently guitarist in recording band Locomotive Breath. Married to Git and has two daughters, Jennifer and Nathalie.

The band was formed under the monicker FAIRYLAND in 1994. After a few memberschanges they found the right line-up and in 1996 they found their new name and recorded their first demo. A new demo was recorded in 1998 and they were finally signed by MTM. Highclass pomp in the vein of early SAGA and CITY BOY mixed with IT BITES and a hint of DREAM THEATER. The songs are long and intriguing, going from lightweight poppy overtones to heavyweight guitar-riffs, all topped with a great sence of humor and incredibly catchy choruses. Right after the second album drummer Tomas Erlandsson left the band and was replaced by Thomas Leijon. Herman was also a member of LOCOMOTIVE BREATH between 1995 and 2001 and Leijon is also found in ANDROMEDA/NONEXIST and he has formerly been a member of the band FLOW that only made it onto a Dzynamite Records compilation. The band was formed in 1991 as a quartet, under the monicker A CANOROUS QUARTET, which you might suspect. They split in 1993, but Fredrik and Mårten carried on changing the quartet to a quintet. Furious speed/death metal influenced by bands like AT THE GATES and MY DYING BRIDE. Vocals of the type that kill vocal chords. Produced by Dan Swanö (EDGE OF SANITY, NIGHTINGALE, etc.). The band excisted between 1993 and 1998, when all except Johan formed KAAMOS. The band made their first demo entitled Demo 1 1995 in 1995 and the official Poems Of A Darker Soul in 1996 (Near Dark). Close in style to bands like DISSECTION and EUCHARIST. On the single, which was pretty cheap in sound and style, the line-up consisted of the above, minus Nicklas. Quite honestly the sound on the album is not that much better, but more like a mid-quality demo. Surprisingly enough it’s recorded at Sunlight Studios by Fred Estby. A very energetic Straight Edge band that plays heavy and powerful NY hard core in the vein of SICK OF IT ALL. Really heavy and powerful sound, concrete guitars and furious vocals. Some really fast tracks, but mostly mid- to up-tempo material. José is also the man behind the labels Desperate Fight and Ampersand. Kristoffer Steen (later in REFUSED) joined before Senseless, but was replaced by Pär (ex. REFUSED) before Neverending Well Of Bliss. Drummer Jonas Lyxsén left right after to do Separation and was replaced by Daniel (ex. CREV). Adam has now been replaced by Niklas Rudolfsson (ex. 1000KG, CREV, STACY).

Formed in 1993 as MY SORROW. The first demo For Bereavement We Cried was recorded the year after. In 1995 they recorded the demo Demo-95, which lead to a deal with No Fashion Records. After the first album guitarist Roger Johansson was replaced by Dennie. Black metal influenced by the likes of ENTOMBED and IRON MAIDEN. Shortly before the recording of The Plague singer Martin “Goatnecro” Qvist left the band. He was replaced by Fredrik Arnesson. Qvist is now found in IMMEMOREAL. Outstanding heavy, riff-oriented 70’s hard rock, very similar to NOVEMBER in their heavier moments with an up-dated 70’s sound. The band started out with lyrics only in Swedish, but the third release is for the English speaking listeners. In 1999 the band unleashed their first 6-track demo Ogräsblues, which is a killer-CDR well worth looking for. The band does a Swedish version of Mesmerization Eclipse on the CAPTAIN BEYOND tribute Thousand Days Of Yesterdays (’99 Record Heaven), called Förtrollande Förmörkelse. From the songs on the self-released 6-track promo Rökt, Smakar Söndag and Gravsten are not found on the album. After the first album singer Christian Andersen was replaced by Ulf, who was ex. The band’s first releases were two demos in 1990, entitled Abruptum and The Satanist Tunes. The titles of the two songs on the début single are as impressive as the songs are strange. The first album contains two long (total over fifty minutes) experiments in deathgrowls, drumrhythms and meant-to-be frightening noises. In Umbra... is the same, only it’s one sixtyminute track. When MAYHEM-guitarist Euronymous died, his label

Morgan is also found in MARDUK and Tony is also in OPHTHALAMIA, a more traditional heavy satanic death/black metal band and late 1995 he also released an album with his solo project VONDUR(means “evil” in Icelandic) that is Nordic folkmusic with evil Icelandic vocals. Tony was the founder of the Swedish satanic association The Black Circle. When CANDLEMASS called it a day Leif compiled all of his unrecorded ideas, worked them out with drummer Jejo and called some more old friends to record the brilliant self-entitled album. Mike Wead is ex. MEMENTO MORI and has previously recorded with HEXENHAUS and CANDLEMASS, Jejo is in brute metal band BRICK and danceunits INFINITE MASS and BEARQUARTET. Simon has his own band FI5TH REASON and Mats (formerly TREAT, CAPRICORN, SWEDISH EROTICA, YNGWIE, SOUTHFORK etc.) is still working on his solo début as well as playing with AB/CD. ABSTRAKT ALGEBRA sound a bit like the missing link between BLACK SABBATH and SAVATAGE, or as Leif describes it ”A CANDLEMASS of the 90’s”. The band split after the album. Leif went re-formed CANDLEMASS, which included Jejo and Simon.

Formed in 1987. On the first 7” Lollo plays bass and singer/ guitarist Morgan Svensson was in the band. In 1987 Lollo also recorded a MLP with HAZY, but was never a member of the band. Jerry replaced Morgan before Sex On The Line. A great band whose first album was at times quite reminiscent of early VAN HALEN. The single Sex On The Line went into some foreign charts and the video Wicked Energiz was shown on Swedish TV. W.E.T (Weird Electric ed Trob adours Temple or Weird Electric Treatment or Wild Energetic . Tempo or...) is a very energetic live-band that has played with several big Swedish acts. The band is also found on the compilation Swedish Metal (95 XTC). The band also recorded a track for the ‘96 Backstage compilation, this time a cover of the band Sator. W.E.T’s second album is actually a big step forward with it’s untrendy, straight, hooligan hard rock ‘n roll. Highly recommended. Jerry was also host for the heavy metal TV-show Diezel and he’s a frequent writer for magazines like Fuzz and Close-Up. The third album was a very strange experiment where the band explored the territory of straight country-tinged rock, a far cry from the early heavies. The band has however returned to their former heaviness, maybe with a more AC/DC-influened touch, which is prooved by a new 3-track demo. The band started as a project that was meant to change members between each record, but became more of a set band. Drums on the début were played by Peter Tägtgren (PAIN, HYPOCRISY) and bass by Michael Hedlund (HYPOCRISY). Parland has previously played with NECROPHOBIC, DARK FUNERAL and is now in INFERNAL. Lars and Michael are also found in HYPOCRISY, while Jim is found in OPHTHALAMIA and VONDUR. The band’s philosophy is they are against life, against humanity, against goodness and of course against Christianity. Brutal black metal. On We Are War the line-up consisted of Berger, Parland and Larsson (ex. IN AETERNUM), while Szöke was just a session-drummer. This, as Tony “It” Särkää (OPHTHALAMIA), who played guitar on the début, had decided to leave the black metal genre all in all (?!). The album was recorded already in 1997 and mastered by James Murphy (TESTAMENT, solo). Sheer poetry... After WARHAMMER split Wiktor, Gabriel and Magnus formed the band SEVEN, a far better installment which no longer exists. Formed in 1998 by Christian Blom and Erik, formerly of black/thrash-band BLOODSOIL. The name WATAIN was taken from a VON-song. They are one of the small circle of band considered true black metal. Aggressive black metal with lots of riffing and intense musical patterns, a bit reminiscent of MARDUK and DISSECTION. They recorded the demos Go Fuck Your Jewish God and Black Metal Sacrifice. In 2001 the live-tape Ritual Macabre was released through Brazilian label Sacriligious Warfare, only as cassette and in 666 copies. Christian was sacked after the recording of the album. The first single was recorded in Necromorbus studio. The band says their music is ”meant for die-hard Black/Death maniacs only” and that they ”are not to be looked upon as a part of today’s loathsome false metal scene”. There you hear! Tore is also found in FUNERAL MIST. As all the records are in limited small editions, they are all sold out, so the chances of finding the band’s music is pretty slim. This is the second volume of The Encyclopedia of Swedish Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Like its predecessor, released in 1996, it deals with bands from the far side of fluffiness to the heavy edge of death/black metal, stretching out towards prog, blues and hardcore. ”Volume II” contains close to 1000 bands of which 660 are new entries and the rest are updates of bands from the first book. A chapter with names and discographies of the remaining 700 bands from the first edition is also featured. The information presented for each band includes hometown, members, biography, musical description and a discography including year, format, title, label and catalogue number. All of it topped off with nice photos and record covers. Janne Stark, one of Europe’s top journalists in the field, has again made an astonishing research effort. It was back in 1983 and I was just a pure rock kid. I sent my very first letter overseas and a few weeks later, I received a cassette from Overdrive’s lead guitarist Janne Stark. I don’t hesitate to say everything with me and hard rock started with that tape sent by Janne. There’s no doubt he helped shrink the distance between one Japanese kid and the rest of the world with rock music. The music from Sweden is still a bit mystifying to us in Japan, even if we feel we all live so close now in this new technology era. Maybe we have something in common deep inside our souls, although nobody can really explain what it is. I personally call Janne ”The Swedish Night Wolf” as he only sleeps three hours a night when he has a project going on that has to do with the music he loves. He has to accomplish other things, too, as a husband, a father of two daughters, a technical engineer and a successful rocker – all at the same time.
