THE EP BOOK also shows an evaluation grading from 1 to 10 of each record, reflecting its current attractiveness on the collectors market. In a special chapter exploring the roots of the EP and its success on the market, also the most rare and expensive EPs are being presented in large detailed photos of its sleeves and labels. INTRODUCTION Once upon a time when we first released the ”The EP Book – Swedish Rock & Pop Pressings 1954 – 1969”, we could never imagine it would become the starting point for Premium Publishing and its long string of book releases, tailored for record collectors and other serious music fans - just as ourselves! In those days, our network was limited to roughly a dozen people. Throughout the years, it has grown into hundreds of helpful record collectors and experts throughout Scandinavia and from around the globe. Thanks to all of you and your continued enthusiasm we can still go on and continue our research and produce yet new titles on our favourite subject: Original records! Vinyl! Sleeves! Artwork! As we all know it, records beautifully reflect the time from when those legendary recordings were first released to a musically starving youth market! Today, many of the recordings from this era have become a most important part of our modern history! The first edition of The EP Book came out in 1992. Now more than 16 years later, you are finally holding the long awaited, updated and expanded, second edition in your hands!You may already have noticed some of the improvements. It´s in colour and we have added the known colour variations of the sleeves. We´ve integrated new genres like country, hootenanny and skiffle. And of course, have added over a dozen records that we unintentionally left behind in the first edition! Also, we now show you all the Composers exactly the way they were credited on the record labels of the original Swedish pressings! Also the ”Various artists” section at the back of the book (where records split among more than two acts are displayed) is also substantially expanded compared to the first edition. We have added the Jukebox label – a popular record club EP series with international acts as well as with many local artists.
To open up that jazz door would be like open Pandora´s box. We have to be strict in our judgements otherwise you would still be sitting around with the first edition for many more years to come… So no jazz. Sorry. However since Swedish jazz pressings from the 50´s and early 60´s have become an expanding field among collectors, it may very well become a subject for a forthcoming book. So please let us know if you would embrace such a pure jazz volume as well… Another similar problem has been how to treat artists with recordings in many different genres and styles. It may be that an artist starts out in one genre and ends up close to Frankie Boy type of music. Such people as Jack Daily, Buddy Greco, Keely Smith and Georgia Gibbs. Among their entries we have been very selective and only included their pop- or r&b -records. During the fifties, the American dominance was massive when it came to the number of record releases in Sweden, something which is clearly seen in this book. The Englishmen took revenge during the sixties mainly, of course, due to The Beatles explosion. One label not included is the record-club-only Gala International as it is still not proven they were actually manufactured in Sweden even if it had Swedish language on the sleeves. In addition, they were called LPs and were played on 33 1/3 rpm despite the smaller 7” format.
4 • All records shall have been subject to a commercial release, test-pressings, promos and self financed acetates, not for resale (like many of the B.R.A. and LdR records) are hence not included.
In all, more than 500 EPs have been added in this new and revised edition.
No qualification filter has been applied to the actual music, even if we sometimes have been tempted to do so… We leave that challenging exploration up to you! The Swedish rock vocalist were often backed by jazz musicians who just couldn´t hold back their jazz instincts when given room for a solo in the middle break of a rock & roll track…
There are 4 – four – criteria for qualifying into this book
We are pleased to serve all collectors and veterans with a new and fresh edition and sincerely hope it´ll bring you as much excitement as the first edition hopefully did!
We have retained the same criteria as in the first edition. All four criteria have to be fulfilled in order for a record to qualify into this book. They are:

Records manufactured outside Sweden but aimed solely for the Swedish market, are generally not included. We have, however, made exceptions for EPs with Swedish acts, pressed specifically for Swedish market. They are: The picture disc EPs with Lille John and Sverre on the Malmö based small independent label Oktav. Plus the legendary EP with Little Gert & The Streaplers on the Telefunken label. They were all manufactured in German plants but on exclusive order from their respective Swedish labels.

2 • One of the tracks should be in either the English language OR an instrumental. These criteria are necessary, otherwise we would be drowned in 1000s of local schlager EPs sung in Swedish, by artists like Siw Malmkvist and Lill-Babs, many of whom also had a very teen oriented repertoire. Other big hits from those years are not included, such as ”Sucu Sucu” with Ping Ping and ”Sukiyaki” with Kyo Sakamoto. They all are victims for this language rule. Also pure MOR / orchestral recordings, even if they may be instrumental, are not included due the lack of scent of a rock or pop smell.
3 • At least one of the four tracks on the EP shall be classified as pop, rock, teen-beat, country, skiffle, hootenanny, folk or blues.
The blues has been little of a problem as both Joe Williams and Ella Fitzgerald have made occasional pure blues records while still having jazz as their core businesses.

Each record has been apointed a valuation number ranging from 1 to 10 (followed by the same number of stars, just to increase visability). The number shows the degree of demand of this specific EP on the collectors market. A ”1★” is hard to sell almost at any price, whereas a ”10★★★★★★★★★★ on the other hand, is worth a minor fortune. All records have been evaluated as if they were in near Mint (M-) condition. Near Mint means an item still has to virtually look and sound as new, but the record would most likely have been played. Just because a record has a low valuation, it doesn´t mean it´s easy to find. It can rather mean that no collectors are really interested in this record (or artist). So the valuation is a combination between how rare and how sought after an EP is.
