2015 AN N UAL RE P ORT
mission Prep for Prep is a long-term investment strategy to develop the leadership potential of able young people from segments of society grossly under-represented in the leadership pool from which all of our major institutions draw. By expanding the nation’s leadership resources, we aim to impact indirectly on a set of inter-related problems that threaten to rend our society. The Prep Community includes over 4,500 students and alumni.

Prep for Prep helps families achieve the American Dream. Dear Friends, The theme of this year’s annual report, brought vividly to life in the following portraits, is as clear as it is compelling: Prep for Prep helps families achieve the American Dream. Our approach is straightforward — we help the most promising children of color in New York gain access to a superior education and life-changing opportunities. It is not only Prep’s 4,500 students and alumni who benefit from the program: our independent school partners, colleges, employers, and society at large profit by embracing our remarkable young people. The success of our students sets off a ripple effect in their families, neighborhoods, communities, and workplaces that inspires and affirms the ideas of social mobility and broad leadership. Our objective is not simply individual enrichment but ethical and effective leadership that embraces the ethos of giving back. Prep’s impact — powerful in both societal and personal terms — is only possible because of the generosity and commitment of our partners listed in the following pages. With gratitude,
Aileen C. Hefferren

$4.2 million Fundraising: Lilac Ball Honorees Bonnie & Richard Reiss and Anita Volz Wien & Byron Wien led the way in raising $4.2 million for the event — the all-time record in the Ball’s 29-year history. (See pages 22 and 23.)
Opportunities: With Prep’s help, 354 of our high school and college students earned summer internships at the most prestigious employers in the city and around the country. (See pages 14 and 15.)

Alumni Milestones To recognize the ever-growing role alums are playing in the life of the organization, Prep announced an Alumni Association in June to great acclaim. Two alums now serve as Corporate Trustees on Prep’s Board: Dale Allsopp (VII) of Google and Sue Meng (XV) of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP. (See page 29.)

Each year, over 750 New York City public schools nominate their top students of color for a place in Prep for Prep.
Rising sixth-graders (eighth-graders in PREP 9) undergo a rigorous 14-month course of study spanning two intensive summer sessions as well as after-school Wednesday and all-day Saturday classes during the intervening school year to increase their academic and social preparedness for independent school.
• Nearly 6,000 candidates who scored in the 90+ percentile on statewide English Language Arts and Math tests are nominated by their public schools. • Based on Prep’s initial testing, over 1,200 students progress to individual IQ testing, teacher recommendations, and interviews. • Roughly 125 candidates are accepted into Prep for Prep (fifth-graders for day school placement) and 75 are accepted into PREP 9 (seventh-graders for boarding school placement).
• Rigorous academic program includes History, Research Skills, Literature, Writing Skills, Laboratory Science, Mathematics, and Latin. • Average class size of 14. • Older Prep students serve as Advisors. • Faculty are drawn from leading independent and public schools.
P L AC E M E NT All students who successfully complete the Preparatory Component (typically 75% of admitted students) are placed in day schools (as seventh-graders) or boarding schools (as ninth-graders). • 40 day schools and 12 boarding schools reserve places for qualified applicants. • Five school visits for each child. • Individual assistance with applications and financial aid forms. • Over $30 million in financial aid committed annually to our students by independent schools.

COUNSELING
A LU M N I A F FA I R S
Prep monitors the academic and personal progress of each student in grades 7–12 through monthly meetings with Prep counselors — young people of color who themselves are graduates of selective colleges.
The opportunities, events, and networking open to alumni strengthen and nurture their achievements and contributions to society, while keeping them active in the Prep Community.
• Individual counselors assigned to every student and available to every parent. Counseling is also available to undergraduates. • Weekly social and cultural activities for middle school students. • Tutoring available, if needed. • Student emergency fund. • Transition-to-college retreats.
O P P O RT U N I T I E S A considerable array of Leadership Development Opportunities broadens our students’ aspirations, increases their awareness of life’s possibilities, and builds a stronger sense of self.
• Networking events • Professional development workshops • Reunions, social gatherings, and a monthly newsletter • Interactive community website • Alumni Giving Campaign
• Internships • Career seminars, professional skills workshops • Entrepreneurship institute • Travel abroad • Public policy and community service projects • College and financial aid counseling, SAT preparation, college trips • Leadership curriculum
In addition to all of the programs above, Prep shares its best practices with like-minded organizations and individuals through an initiative called Smart Connections, through which Prep has indirectly impacted another 250,000 young people worldwide. (See page 12.)
Family 11 Ties
Prep is enormously proud of its Smart Connections initiative, which continues our long history of sharing best practices with like-minded organizations and individuals. Since 2007, Smart Connections has formed relationships with over 200 programs across the United States and around the world, offering them ongoing consulting and technical assistance, networking opportunities, and a professional conference. Smart Connections leverages Prep’s extraordinary track record to help strengthen organizations and improve the life prospects of many more young people. Through this initiative, we have indirectly impacted the lives of another 250,000 young people worldwide. In Fiscal Year 2015, we welcomed these organizations to the Smart Connections network: • Bridge Scholars of Chattanooga (Chattanooga, TN) • ismart (São Paulo, Brazil) • JUMP — Join Us to Maximize our Potential (Seoul, South Korea) • SEAD — Summer Enrichment at Dartmouth (Hanover, NH) • Unite Lebanon Youth Project (Beirut, Lebanon) Smart Connections also hosted a series of events in New York for peer organizations with experts from across the country, representing institutions such as the College Board, KIPP, Vassar, and the Posse Foundation. Highlights include: • Exploring the Role of Formal College Partnerships to Improve Higher Education Access and Success • Engaging in Constructive Dialogue about Race and (In)Justice with our Students • College Connections: Bringing Counselors and Admissions Officers Together to Share Best Practices If you or an organization you know could benefit from the services of Smart Connections, please email smartconnections@prepforprep.org or visit www.prepforprep.org/smartconnections.
The visit was an incredible opportunity to hear firsthand about the many unique aspects of programming and services that Prep offers. I will be going back to Seattle with many new ideas. — Alex Dorros, Academic Counselor, Rainier Scholars, Seattle, WA

THIS YEAR, PREP FOR PREP ALUMNI FORGED DEEPER TIES TO PREP AND TO EACH OTHER through their generosity and volunteerism. They attended more than 40 events, gave back as volunteers, and generously supported the Alumni Giving Campaign. Lively interest groups such as the Prep Arts Society, Prep in Real Estate, and Prep in Tech met to exchange ideas and to plan alumni events. At this year’s Lilac Ball, the formation of the Prep Alumni Association was announced to great acclaim with the goal of further increasing the alumni voice at Prep. With the following listing, Prep commends the nearly 1,200 alumni who contributed financially this past fiscal year.
