Making Strides in Public Service
mission Prep for Prep develops ethical and effective leaders who reflect our diverse society for the enduring benefit of all. The Prep Community includes over 4,500 students and alumni.
M E S SAG E F RO M TH E C H I E F E X ECU TIV E
Dear Friends, At Prep for Prep, we are serious about measuring our success. We count enrollments, academic accolades, degrees of all stripes, leadership opportunities, and the professional positions earned by our students and alumni. However, what matters most in the end is the extent to which our graduates are shaping a better world as leaders. After all, that is our mission to which we have closely hewn for nearly 40 years. Prep encourages its students and alumni to embrace leadership in every realm, and they are drawn in great numbers to business, education, technology, and media. This annual report, Change Makers, celebrates those alumni who have chosen public service as their lives’ work. The areas and means by which they are affecting urgently needed change are as diverse as they are impressive. In the following pages you’ll see: • Economic Development specialist Shaun Blugh (XVIII) working to diversify Boston’s labor force
and bring new jobs to that city • Environmental Law Professor Maxine Burkett (X) using the force of law to mitigate the effects
of climate change on our most vulnerable global communities • The leader of one of the nation’s most effective civil rights organizations, Kristen Clarke (P9 II),
combatting injustice and discrimination at every turn • The head of California’s largest healthcare advocacy organization, Anthony Wright (V),
fighting to bring medical care to millions These four stellar examples are among hundreds catalyzing change — from kindergarten classrooms in the rural South to affordable housing units in the Bronx, from a public health clinic in Pennsylvania to all levels of local, state, and federal government agencies across the nation. Still others are contributing as volunteers. And behind those nearly 3,000 alums, I am pleased to say over 1,300 middle, high school, and college students are poised to do exactly the same. At a time when faith in our public institutions is at an all-time low, I find these stories cause for great hope. Of course, leaders of this caliber are not forged by one organization or experience alone. Prep’s model requires the partnership and good faith of people like you: our donors, independent schools, colleges, employers, and other partners. We are grateful for your commitment and know that you celebrate the contributions of these outstanding individuals as keenly as we do. In service,
Aileen C. Hefferren

Fundraising: Serving as this year’s Lilac Ball Honoree, Lawrence E. Golub ensured the event was a resounding success, netting over $3 million and attracting over 1,200 guests to celebrate the accomplishments of Prep’s graduating seniors.

THE PREP FOR PREP JOURNEY
STUDENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS
TR ANSITION TO INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS
TALENT SEARCH
PREPARATORY COMPONENT
Each year, top students of color from 750 New York City public schools apply for admission to Prep for Prep.
Rising sixth-graders in Prep for Prep and eighth-graders in PREP 9 undergo a rigorous 14-month course of study spanning two intensive summer sessions as well as afterschool Wednesday and all-day Saturday classes during the intervening school year to increase their academic and social preparedness for independent school.
•N early 6,000 candidates who scored in the 90+ percentile on statewide English Language Arts and Math tests are nominated by their public schools. • Based on Prep’s initial testing, 1,500 students advance to the next level of evaluation. • Approximately 700 students progress to individual IQ testing, teacher recommendations, and interviews. • Roughly 125 candidates are accepted into Prep for Prep (fifth-graders for day school placement) and 75 are accepted into PREP 9 (seventh-graders for boarding school placement).
• Prep’s rigorous academic program includes History, Research Skills, Literature, Writing Skills, Laboratory Science, Mathematics, and Latin. • The average Preparatory Component class size is 14 students. • Older Prep students serve as Advisors to help guide new students through the program. • Teachers are drawn from leading independent and public schools.
PLACEMENT All students who successfully complete the Preparatory Component (typically 75% of admitted students) are placed in day schools (as seventh-graders) or boarding schools (as ninth-graders). • Forty day schools and 12 boarding schools reserve places for qualified applicants. • Each student visits with five independent schools. • Prep staff assists families with applications and financial aid forms. • Our independent school partners annually commit over $35 million in financial aid to our students.

FISCAL YEAR 2017 OVERVIEW
Prep for Prep is deeply fortunate to have so many dedicated and generous supporters. As an organization that receives no government support and charges no tuition, Prep relies entirely on the many individual, foundation, and corporate donors who sustain our efforts each year. On behalf of the over 4,500 students and alumni in the Prep Community, thank you. We are especially grateful for the leadership and extraordinary generosity of our Board of Trustees. Their investment in Prep over the past 39 years has shaped the program into the success it is today. The following section of the Annual Report acknowledges contributions of $1,000 or more attributed to Fiscal Year 2017 (July 1, 2016–June 30, 2017).

GUIDED BY PREP FOR PREP’S ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, our alumni connected with each other and the organization in significant ways this year. Through their event attendance, volunteer activity, and generous support of the Alumni Giving Campaign, our alums proudly carried Prep’s banner. The Alumni Council’s creative thinking and close collaboration with Prep staff resulted in impactful initiatives such as the School Champions volunteer model, the March Mania fundraising competition between schools, the relaunch of Affinity Groups, and the development of the Alumni Business Directory. In the following pages, Prep commends the 1,000 alumni who contributed financially this past fiscal year.
