mission Prep for Prep is a long-term investment strategy to develop the leadership potential of able young people from segments of society grossly under-represented in the leadership pool from which all of our major institutions draw. By expanding the nation’s leadership resources, we aim to impact indirectly on a set of inter-related problems that threaten to rend our society. The Prep Community includes over 4,500 students and alumni.

message from the chief e xecutive

“ Nothing truly valuable can be achieved except by the unselfish cooperation of many individuals.” — Albert Einstein

Dear Friends, When those who are new to Prep for Prep learn all that the organization accomplishes, they are invariably impressed. Conducting an admissions process more selective than Harvard’s and then preparing and supporting students to compete in the most competitive schools and colleges in the country, if not the world, is no easy task. But to fully grasp just how robust Prep for Prep is, one must understand the many powerful partnerships that enrich, propel, and strengthen our students. In the following pages you’ll meet these loyal partners — independent schools, internship providers, fellow nonprofits, and colleges and universities. While numbers alone don’t tell the whole story, they are well worth considering: Our independent school partners commit more than $25 million in grants to Prep families every year; college and university financial aid for our students approaches $30 million annually. Every summer, our internship providers invest more than $1.6 million in stipends for our students, and other tremendously valuable opportunities come from travel abroad programs, government agencies, summer camps, and test preparation services. After exposure to these kinds of select institutions, Prep’s young people are poised to assume leadership roles anywhere and everywhere. Why are these partners willing to invest so mightily in our students? Most importantly, they share our mission and values. They are eager to join in the great endeavor of transforming our nation’s leadership pool. From past experience, they know the diverse young minds from Prep will excel, dispel stereotypes, and help solve the major challenges that lie ahead. In the words of University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann, “Excellence and diversity go hand in hand.” But there is another part of the equation that is just as essential to our students’ success: you, our generous donors and alumni. With ongoing investment from you and opportunities from our partners, we will change the face of leadership. For once, the too-often-used adage rings true: We couldn’t do it without you. With much gratitude,

Aileen C. Hefferren

H i g h l i g h t s o f F i s c a l Y e a r 2 014 Alumni Accomplishments: Among our alumni body we now proudly count more than 100 medical doctors or students as well as over 100 PhDs or doctoral candidates. A remarkable 44% of our alumni made a gift back to Prep this year. (See page 35.)

Opportunities: A record 357 Prep students earned career-oriented summer internships at the City’s most prestigious employers. (See pages 22 and 23.)

Fundraising: Continuing its tremendous legacy of generosity, our Board donated 54% of the over $9.5 million Prep raised this year. At the 2014 Lilac Ball, a group of loyal longtime Trustees and their spouses — Honorees Anne & John Hall, David A. Nadler, and Fay & Bill Shutzer — helped net more than $3 million. (See pages 28 and 29.)

Administration: After 26 years of distinguished service, Prep bade a grateful goodbye to Peter Bordonaro, our Deputy Executive Director & Director of Academic Programs; his successor, Nikole Smith, is a two-decade veteran of Prep who for the last ten years has ably led the Prep Preparatory Component.

Each year, over 750 New York City public schools nominate their top students of color for a place in Prep for Prep.

Rising sixth-graders (eighth-graders in PREP 9) undergo a rigorous 14-month course of study spanning two intensive summer sessions as well as after-school Wednesday and all-day Saturday classes during the intervening school year to increase their academic and social preparedness for independent school.

• Nearly 6,000 candidates who scored in the 90+ percentile on statewide English Language Arts and Math tests are nominated by their public schools. •B ased on Prep’s initial testing, over 1,200 students progress to individual IQ testing, teacher recommendations, and interviews. • Roughly 125 candidates are accepted into Prep for Prep (fifth-graders for day school placement) and 75 are accepted into PREP 9 (seventh-graders for boarding school placement).

• Rigorous academic program includes History, Research Skills, Literature, Writing Skills, Laboratory Science, Mathematics, and Latin. • Average class size of 14. • Older Prep students serve as Advisors. • Faculty are drawn from leading independent and public schools.

P l ac e m e nt All students who successfully complete the Preparatory Component (typically 75% of admitted students) are placed in day schools (as seventh-graders) or boarding schools (as ninth-graders). • 40 day schools and 12 boarding schools reserve places for qualified applicants. • Five school visits for each child. • Individual assistance with applications and financial aid forms. • Over $25 million in financial aid committed annually to our students by independent schools.

Counseling

a lu m n i A f fa i r s

Prep monitors the academic and personal progress of each student in grades 7–12 through monthly meetings with Prep counselors — young people of color who themselves are graduates of selective colleges.

The opportunities, events, and networking open to alumni strengthen and nurture their achievements and contributions to society, while keeping them active in the Prep Community.

• Individual counselors assigned to every student and available to every parent. Counseling is also available to undergraduates. • Weekly social and cultural activities for middle school students. • Tutoring available, if needed. • Student emergency fund. • Transition-to-college retreats.

O p p o rt u n i t i e s A considerable array of Leadership Development Opportunities broadens our students’ aspirations, increases their awareness of life’s possibilities, and builds a stronger sense of self.

• Networking events • Professional development workshops • Reunions, social gatherings, and a monthly newsletter • Interactive community website • Alumni Giving Campaign

• Internships • Career seminars, professional skills workshops • Entrepreneurship institute • Travel abroad • Public policy and community service projects • College and financial aid counseling, SAT preparation, college trips • Leadership curriculum

In addition to all of the programs above, Prep shares its best practices with like-minded organizations and individuals through an initiative called Smart Connections. To date, Smart Connections has formed relationships with over 200 organizations across the United States and around the world, offering them ongoing consulting and technical assistance, networking opportunities, and a biennial conference. Through this initiative, Prep has indirectly impacted another 250,000 young people worldwide.

Prep for Prep is deeply fortunate to have so many dedicated and generous supporters. Each and every gift signifies a vote of confidence in our mission and work. As an organization that receives no government support and charges no tuition, Prep relies entirely on the many individual, foundation, and corporate donors who sustain our efforts each year. On behalf of the over 4,500 students and alumni who have directly benefited from the program, thank you. We are especially grateful for the extraordinary generosity and commitment of our Board of Trustees. The investment our Trustees have made in Prep over the past 36 years has shaped the program into the success it is today. The following section of the Annual Report acknowledges contributions of $500 or more attributed to Fiscal Year 2014 (July 1, 2013 – June 30, 2014).

This year, Prep alums benefited from the many opportunities to connect with Prep and each other. They attended more than 40 events, gave back as volunteers, and generously supported the Alumni Giving Campaign. The 35th Anniversary Celebration at Riverside Church attracted 600 alumni and current students to the Convocation and 300 to the alumni dinner. The May 2014 retirement party for Peter Bordonaro was a tribute to his 26 years of service and attracted hundreds of alums. Through the new Evertrue networking app and our LinkedIn group, alums can now connect to each other. With the following listing, Prep commends the more than 1,000 alumni who contributed financially this past fiscal year.
