LEADERS 2016 ANN UAL RE PORT
mission Prep for Prep is a long-term investment strategy to develop the leadership potential of able young people from segments of society grossly under-represented in the leadership pool from which all of our major institutions draw. By expanding the nation’s leadership resources, we aim to impact indirectly on a set of inter-related problems that threaten to rend our society. The Prep Community includes over 4,500 students and alumni.
M E S SAG E F RO M TH E C H I E F E X ECU TIV E
Dear Friends, For nearly 40 years, Prep for Prep has propelled thousands of New York City’s most promising young people of color on the path to success. The program’s ability to create young leaders has been a constant. What has changed dramatically in recent years, however, is how the path to success has been redefined. Equipped with fresh ideas and passion, more and more Prep alums are choosing to create their own ventures, going to work at companies far younger than Prep itself, or pursuing careers in sectors of the economy that were unheard of even ten years ago. It turns out that offering a superior education and life-changing opportunities to our students at an early age has imbued them with a creative, technical, and entrepreneurial verve that is well suited to the new economy. The following pages give just a few examples of the many ways Prep is launching leaders into a changed world of technology, education, real estate, and socially responsible startups. While it is inspiring to watch Prep students and alumni assume leadership positions in a rapidly changing world, I am equally reassured by something that has not changed at all: the unflagging support of our donors, independent school partners, colleges, and employers. Thank you for being agents of social change at a time when our society needs transformation more than ever. With gratitude,
Aileen C. Hefferren

$4.2 million Fundraising: This year’s Lilac Ball Honoree Jeff T. Blau, CEO of Related Companies, helped set three records at the event: greatest attendance, most funds ever raised by an Honoree, and an all-time high of $4.2 million raised (net) in total.
Internships: With doors opened by Prep Trustees and alums, a record 364 of Prep’s high school and college students earned competitive summer internships at leading employers in New York and across the country. (See pages 12 to 15.)
364 internships
Leadership: Prep welcomed two new members to its Executive Staff: Our Director of Admissions, Johanna Rodriguez, comes to us from Poly Prep Country Day School where she was Director of Enrollment Management and Financial Aid. Our new Director of Counseling is Prep alum Jackson Collins (XII), formerly Upper School Dean of Students and Associate Head of the Upper School at The Shipley School.

Each year, over 750 New York City public schools nominate their top students of color for admission to Prep for Prep.
Rising sixth-graders in Prep for Prep and eighth-graders in PREP 9 undergo a rigorous 14-month course of study spanning two intensive summer sessions as well as afterschool Wednesday and all-day Saturday classes during the intervening school year to increase their academic and social preparedness for independent school.
• Nearly 6,000 candidates who scored in the 90+ percentile on statewide English Language Arts and Math tests are nominated by their public schools. • Based on Prep’s initial testing, over 1,200 students progress to individual IQ testing, teacher recommendations, and interviews. • Roughly 125 candidates are accepted into Prep for Prep (fifth-graders for day school placement) and 75 are accepted into PREP 9 (seventh-graders for boarding school placement).
• Prep’s rigorous academic program includes History, Research Skills, Literature, Writing Skills, Laboratory Science, Mathematics, and Latin. • The average Preparatory Component class size is 14 students. • Older Prep students serve as Advisors to help guide new students through the program. • Teachers are drawn from leading independent and public schools.
P L AC E M E NT All students who successfully complete the Preparatory Component (typically 75% of admitted students) are placed in day schools (as seventh-graders) or boarding schools (as ninth-graders). • Forty day schools and 12 boarding schools reserve places for qualified applicants. • Each student visits with five independent schools. • Prep staff assists families with applications and financial aid forms. • Our independent school partners annually commit over $30 million in financial aid to our students.

COUNSELING
A LU M N I A F FA I R S
Prep monitors the academic and personal progress of each student in grades 7–12 through monthly meetings with Prep counselors — young people of color who themselves are graduates of selective colleges. The Undergraduate Affairs office provides counseling services to Prep college students. Services include:

O P P O RT U N I T I E S A considerable array of Leadership Development Opportunities broadens our students’ aspirations, increases their awareness of life’s possibilities, and builds a stronger sense of self. Prep students participate in:
• Networking events, reunions, and social gatherings • Professional development workshops • Monthly newsletters and job listings • Alumni Giving Campaign • Opportunities to volunteer at Prep
• Internships • Career seminars and professional skills workshops • Entrepreneurship institute • Travel abroad programs • Public policy and community service projects • College and financial aid counseling, SAT preparation, and college trips • Leadership curriculum
In addition to all of the programs above, Prep shares its best practices with like-minded organizations and individuals through an initiative called Smart Connections, through which Prep has indirectly impacted another 250,000 young people worldwide.

Prep for Prep is deeply fortunate to have so many dedicated and generous supporters. As an organization that receives no government support and charges no tuition, Prep relies entirely on the many individual, foundation, and corporate donors who sustain our efforts each year. On behalf of the over 4,500 students and alumni in the Prep Community, thank you. We are especially grateful for the leadership and extraordinary generosity of our Board of Trustees. Their investment in Prep over the past 38 years has shaped the program into the success it is today. The following section of the Annual Report acknowledges contributions of $1,000 or more attributed to Fiscal Year 2016 (July 1, 2015–June 30, 2016).

Note: The above figures differ from those presented in the Unrestricted Fund/Operating column on the opposite page. Income lines above include contributions pledged in previous years but designated for FY ’16 (assets released from temporary restrictions) and income and investment gains released as a draw on Permanently Restricted Endowment. Moreover, income and expense lines above have been reduced by the indirect expenses of the Lilac Ball and in-kind contributions.

IN THE INAUGUR AL YEAR OF PREP FOR PREP’S ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, our alumni forged deeper ties to the organization and each other. Alums shared their views via an online survey, attended nearly 40 events, increased their volunteerism in every area of the program, and generously supported the Alumni Giving Campaign. A revamped newsletter, new alumni calendar, and a volunteer portal increased the flow of information. The Alumni Council worked with Prep staff to introduce innovative programming such as the Prep for Life online coaching seminar, A Roof Overhead first-time homebuyers event, Alumni Basketball Classic, Summer Soirée, financial literacy program, and three-city Summer Family Picnics. Lively interest groups such as the Prep Arts Initiative and Prep in Real Estate met to exchange ideas and plan events. In the following pages, Prep commends the more than 1,000 alumni who contributed financially this past fiscal year.
