Change Affects All of Us—Especially Our Estate Plans Life’s ordinary changes—not to mention the unexpected—can weaken even the best-prepared estate plan. To prevent this, it’s smart to review and update your estate plan every few years or after any significant life event. Also, changes in tax laws may warrant a revision in your estate planning strategies. Life Changes Estate planning reflects your wishes and financial circumstances at the time the documents are prepared. As years pass, your circumstances and wishes will probably change—as should your estate plan. But maybe your life is so busy that you have not updated your plans for many years. This seemingly small mistake could have devastating effects for your family and friends. If you get divorced, for example, and do not change your estate plan, your former spouse may retain unexpected rights. (In some states, provisions in favor of a spouse in a will—but no other documents, such as life insurance or retirement plan benefits—that is created during a marriage may be deemed invalid after a divorce.) This could potentially affect a lot of people—especially those closest to your heart. Other reasons to revise your estate plan include: • The birth of a grandchild. • Significant change in the value of your estate. • Relocation to a different state. • Death of a beneficiary or personal representative.

Plan for Accidents, Illnesses and Disabilities Life’s unexpected situations may also have a major impact on your estate plan. If someone under your care was born with physical or mental limitations, he or she may require lifelong care. Or, a surviving spouse’s ability to earn a living may change because of illness or a disability. Ask your estate planning attorney to explain your options regarding these circumstances when you meet to revise your estate plan. When updating your estate plan, we encourage you to consult an estate planning attorney who knows the laws of your state. We would also be happy to answer any questions or meet with you and your attorney if your future plans include a bequest to Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America.

By including family members in your estate planning process, they will be more likely to understand, respect and support your decisions. 2

The Rev. Bill Walter, left, and Ed Duman donated sales of their artwork to the Good Samaritan Benevolent Care Program, which provides assistance to residents who have exhausted their funds through no fault of their own.

Unique Support for the Good Samaritan Benevolent Care Program Aberdeen Village residents, Rev. Bill Walter and Ed Duman, are accomplished artists with skills in watercolor painting, oil painting, and pencil sketching.

from residents. Their art-for-a-cause effort netted nearly $1000 for the Program.

They both wanted to do something that would help current and future residents, so they devised a unique way to support the Good Samaritan Benevolent Care Program. The Program provides assistance to residents who have exhausted their funds through no fault of their own.

Rev. Walter, a retired Presbyterian minister, said, “We believe the Good Samaritan Program is an important opportunity for residents and their families to give for the benefit of others. While the proceeds of our art sales will benefit Aberdeen Village residents, we encourage residents at other PMMA communities to support their Good Samaritan Program.”

They displayed nearly 50 personal framed art pieces, at the Aberdeen Village art gallery, with sales proceeds benefitting the Good Samaritan Program. In all they sold 25 artworks, as well as receiving additional gifts

Ed, who spent nearly 40 years working on the railroad, added, “It is encouraging to know that others will enjoy our art, while at the same time their purchases will benefit the Good Samaritan Program.” 3

Turn Your Giving Into a Lifetime Source of Income Have you wondered how to turn your support of Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America into a legacy that will impact future generations? By including PMMA in your long-term estate or financial plans, you can make a powerful testament of your priorities. And because there are several ways to accomplish your gift, you have the flexibility to fulfill your philanthropic goals in a way that works best for you. One option, called a charitable gift annuity, allows you to invest in the future of PMMA, while you receive fixed, dependable payments for life. How It Works (It’s Easier Than You Think) You can set up a charitable gift annuity with a simple contract between you and Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America. You make a donation and PMMA in turn, agrees to pay you a fixed amount each year for the rest of your life. The rate of payment you receive doesn’t fluctuate with the stock market, interest rates or inflation. It is firmly set at the time of your gift and never changes. After your lifetime, the remaining balance is used to help fulfill the PMMA mission “to provide quality senior services guided by Christian values.” What Are the Benefits of a Charitable Gift Annuity? • You have potential to receive increased disposable income. • You are eligible for an income tax deduction for a portion of the gift that is considered a charitable gift. • A portion of your payment is income tax–free throughout your estimated life expectancy. • Any long-term capital gains income can be reportable over your life expectancy, in most cases. • After your lifetime, the remaining portion of your gift will support the PMMA mission, thus helping to fulfill your philanthropic goals.

Delay Your Payments Until You Need Them Most If you don’t need your payments today, you can set up a deferred gift annuity. This allows you to delay receiving payments until a later date — such as reaching a certain age. You make the contribution to PMMA now, and PMMA agrees to pay you fixed payments for life starting at a date you select, usually five or 10 years from now. However, you secure a current income tax charitable gift deduction in the year you make the gift. This is especially advantageous if your tax bracket is higher now than it possibly will be later. Another advantage is the payment rate will be higher, when the payments begin.

Lawrence Manor Hosts Donor Recognition Luncheon Lawrence Presbyterian Manor honored its special donors in a “Tribute to Our Partners in Giving” luncheon held May 23 at the Oread Hotel. Following lunch, Bruce Shogren, PMMA president and CEO, addressed the group. He stressed their value not only as donors to the Lawrence Presbyterian Manor, but also as faithful members of the entire PMMA family. The luncheon was hosted by members of the LPM Community Advisory Council and by Rhonda Parks, executive director of Lawrence Presbyterian Manor. During the 2013 fiscal year, 160 donors gave nearly $91,500 to Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.

Bruce Shogren, president and CEO of Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America, addresses generous donors during a recent luncheon in their honor.

Your Safe-Deposit Box: What Goes In? What Stays Out? Over the years you’ve likely accumulated a great number of valuable documents, and those papers do not belong in a box under your mattress. A safedeposit box is a secure place to store items that would cause panic if lost. Many banks and credit unions rent safe-deposit boxes. The annual cost can range from $50 to more than $400.

What to Keep in Your Box

What NOT to Keep in Your Box

• Insurance policies • Birth, marriage and death certificates • Adoption papers and divorce decrees • Deeds, titles, mortgage papers and lease contracts • Military records and citizenship papers • Stock and bond certificates • A videotape or DVD inventory of your home’s contents • Personal items that have great sentimental value or would be costly to replace

riginals of wills, trusts, power • O of attorney documents • Medical care directives • Funeral or burial instructions

Quick Tip As a precautionary measure, keep a separate list of the items in your safe-deposit box and make a habit of checking the box at least once a year — if only to keep from forgetting where you hid the key.

Music therapist Diana Ice brings songs and smiles to residents at Kansas City Presbyterian Manor. Enjoying the music are residents Mary Janet Douglas, far left, and Deone Gripp, far right, along with Deone’s daughter, Linda Hohlman.

Putting ‘Faces’ on Her Gifts

Every Tuesday, when you hear the strains of music begin in Kansas City Presbyterian Manor, you’ll see residents’ eyes start to brighten. Soon smiles begin spreading across their faces, and their toes start tapping to the music’s rhythm.

Studies have shown that music is linked to areas of the brain that control memory, emotions and movement. Diana confirms this. “When the music starts, you can see someone’s toes start to tap,” she said. “Before long everyone’s toes are tapping.”

The music comes from the voice and the guitar of Diana Ice, a board certified music therapist. Diana has served part-time at Kansas City Presbyterian Manor for the past 13 years. And she’s been a donor to the Manor for as many years.

During a typical weekly visit, Diana will see 65 to 70 residents. She works each morning with various small groups of up to 10, incorporating singing, rhythmic activities, instrument playing and movement.

“I love doing music with older adults,” Diana said. “Music helps residents reach into their long-term memories. The songs we play are the ones they remember from their teens and 20s. They’re the songs they associate with happy memories.” 6

Her afternoons are devoted to one-on-one sessions, with residents who are not able to attend group sessions due to difficulties such as serious memory loss. Continued on page 7

Putting ‘Faces’ on Her Gifts, Continued from page 6

Tina Ashford, the Manor’s activities and volunteer director, says Diana’s music is having a great impact on our residents. “I’ve seen residents who usually won’t respond or who are anxious,” Tina said. “But when Diana plays her guitar and sings, you can see these residents calm down and become engaged, even join in the singing.” “It’s truly a pleasure for me to go to work at Kansas City Presbyterian Manor,” Diana said. “That’s why I feel

so strongly about supporting Kansas City Presbyterian Manor with my own giving.” She’s an especially strong advocate for the Good Samaritan Program, which helps support residents who have exhausted their funds through no fault of their own. “I believe in sharing what God has given me,” Diana said. “That’s why I make my gifts to worthy causes like Kansas City Presbyterian Manor. At the Manor I have the pleasure of putting faces on my gifts when I’m there. That really makes me happy.”

Generous Donors Provide New Bus for Parsons Residents Thanks to the generosity of local donors, Parsons Presbyterian Manor (PPM) residents are now traveling to important appointments and local events in a new 14-passenger bus. A fundraising effort led by the PPM Community Advisory Council raised $51,000 for the bus, which includes a power lift for wheelchairs. The bus replaces an 18-year-old van that during its lifetime had undergone two transmission overhauls and multiple repairs to its cabin and its wheelchair lift.

“What’s more, they will be able to travel in comfort when they take out-of-town day trips,” said Executive Director, Maegen Pegues. Every member of the Community Advisory Council supported the bus campaign, as did all of the PPM management staff. Additional support came from residents, family members of residents and from two recent bequests to Parsons Presbyterian Manor.

Taking part in the ribbon-cutting for the new bus at Parsons Presbyterian Manor are, from left, Betty Blubaugh, Gary Brennecke and Charlotte Ecoff, Advisory Council members; resident Helen Carter; Maegen Pegues, executive director; Becky Province, Diamond Coach representative; and Dr. Lyle Lomas, Advisory Council member.

Alice Kalb Society Honors Donors

Thank you for Supporting the In 1947, 90-year-old Alice Kalb asked the Presbyterian Synod of Kansas (Presbyterian Church, USA) to address the needs of older people who were seeking senior living accommodations. Two years later, in 1949, the first Presbyterian Manor opened in a house in Newton, KS. Ms. Kalb was among the first seven residents. She was also among the first individuals to financially support the new Presbyterian Manor in Newton. Her giving encouraged a farmer to donate his Wakarusa, Kansas, farm through a bequest. That bequest funded construction of the first section of Newton Presbyterian Manor.

PMMA Vision and Mission Throughout its 65-year history, Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America has been the recipient of bequests, estate gifts, trusts and current gifts from individuals who believe in the PMMA mission of service to seniors. During the past fiscal year of 2013, 15 estate bequests from Alice Kalb Society donors amounted to $1.9 million. This total included $684,000 in undesignated gifts and $1.2 million directed to the Good Samaritan Program. In addition, members of the Alice Kalb Society established 10 new Charitable Gift Annuities totaling $105,000. Their vision and generosity live to bless other residents of PMMA senior living communities.
