Topeka Presbyterian Manor announces Art is Ageless® winners
Topeka Presbyterian Manor is excited to announce the winners of its recent Art is Ageless® juried competition and exhibit.
“We’re honored that local seniors allowed us to exhibit and judge their wonderful works,” said Chris Phelps, senior living sales specialist. “Art is Ageless is unique because it only features the works of artists who are 65 and over. Our artists prove it’s never too late to create art, in any form.
Local competition winners will join winners from 14 other PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America®) senior living communities to be judged at the masterpiece level. Winning entries at the masterpiece level are selected for publication in PMMA’s annual Art is Ageless calendar and note cards.
Art is Ageless is a copyrighted program of PMMA®. For the competition, works must have been completed in the past five years. Started in 1980, Art is Ageless is an extension of PMMA’s wellness programs, which focus on mental, physical, social, and spiritual health. The program encourages Topeka Presbyterian Manor residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through its annual competition.

Tips for staying safe during summer heat
Summer is here and so is the heat. Not only do rising temperatures make life uncomfortable, they can also be life threatening.
To help keep you and your loved ones safe this season, the Center for Disease Control reminds you to stay cool, stay hydrated and stay informed.
Stay cool
• Wear loose-fitting lightweight clothing
• Stay within an air-conditioned environment as much as possible
• Limit outdoor activities to when it is the coolest
• Cut down on strenuous outdoor exercise
• Wear sunscreen—sunburns affect your body’s ability to cool down and can make you dehydrated
• Avoid hot and heavy meals
Stay hydrated
• Drink plenty of fluids—don’t wait until you’re thirsty (if your doctor limits how much you drink, be sure to check first)
• Stay away from sugary or alcoholic beverages
• Replace salt and lost minerals with sport drinks (if you are a low-salt diet, check with your doctor before taking any supplements)
• Provide plenty of water for your pets
Stay informed
• Check your local news or weather app for extreme heat alerts
• Learn the signs and symptoms of heatrelated illness
• Keep an eye on those at risk—infants, those dealing with a chronic illness and overweight individuals u

Joe and Peggy Turner are loving life at Topeka Presbyterian Manor
They share 19 great-grandchildren, a lifetime of memories and now an apartment at Topeka Presbyterian Manor.
New residents Joe and Peggy Turner have been at the Manor just over 11 months and if you’re looking for someone with buyer’s remorse it isn’t them.
“We’re really enjoying it,” said Joe Turner.
“She was a bit hesitant at first, but now she loves it as much as I do.”
The Turners, like a lot of couples, had always promised themselves that they wouldn’t rely on their kids to take care of them when they got older.
“That wasn’t a burden we wanted them to have to worry about,” Joe said.
So, when the time was right, the pair began looking for the right place to call home.
“As it turned out, someone from the sales and marketing office came by one of our garage sales as a customer,” said Peggy.
“She made it her mission after we struck up a conversation to get us into the Manor.”
The rest, as they say, is history. Peggy is still able to cook in the spacious kitchen their apartment provides her, and she enjoys playing Bingo. Both say they enjoy going to dinner and meeting their new neighbors at the community.
“It’s really worked out quite nicely,” Peggy said. u
