The Great American Read comes to Aberdeen Heights The Great American Read is a program brought to us by the Kirkwood Library. Partnering with Channel 9, the local PBS station, the Kirkwood Library brought early screenings to The Glen of the PBS episodes of “The Great American Read. The Kirkwood Library was able to show these episodes several weeks before they air on television. We chose five different segments to watch over the course of three READ, continued on page 2

Chuck Gillentine discusses his wine making and new St. Louis winery at our Small Business Day.

Small Business Day delights September Small Business Day brought us Chuck Gillentine, owner of Defiance Ridge Vineyard in Defiance, Mo. Chuck discussed his winery, the day-to-day operations, and the rewards and challenges of working in the wine-making and hospitality business. Rooted in the rolling hills of historic Missouri wine country, the 42-acre property boasts a vineyard, tranquil lake and lush garden landscape, and views of the sweeping Missouri River Valley. The winery is open seven days a week, and has a terrace and veranda surrounding an historic farmhouse. Chuck brought samples and answered questions.

Barbara Cockrell, coordinator of homebound and outreach services at the Kirkwood Library, brings The Great American Read to residents.

Resident Betty Spence, whose son Alan owns Spence Vineyards in Napa Valley, Calif, found the program particularly interesting since her son has been in the business for years. Chuck was intrigued that Spence Vineyards is located on Howell Mountain, the area where he currently gets some of the grapes used in his wine. Since the presentation, Betty has connected the two St. Louis-born winemakers! Defiance Ridge Winery is about 25 minutes from Kirkwood. Experience it for yourself by visiting defianceridgevineyards.com.

Allison and friends bake Allison Kelly, a lifestyles assistant, knows how to bake. She actually has a business on the side, Babbs Bakery. She brought her flair for treats that are pretty and sweet to The Glen. From caramel apples to frosted cupcakes and apple tarts to pumpkin brittle, we enjoyed it all. Cheryl Behan, daughter of Helen Quante, liked the decorated cupcakes so much she went home and made them just like our residents did. She brought them in for staff the next week. How sweet!

The Glen residents watch one of the Great American Read episodes, “Heroes.” This episode follows the trials of some of literature’s favorite heroes. From Katniss Everdeen to Don Quixote, it examines how the everyday hero and the anti-hero find their inner strength, overcome challenges and rise to the occasion.

You can guess for yourselves some of the titles, authors and characters that these episodes captured. This was a great series for The Glen to be a part of and we thank the Kirkwood Library! Like us on Facebook

A nature lover and an avid supporter of the gardens, Joan was all smiles Contact Bethany Holohan during the outing, and enjoyed The at bholohan@pmma. Flora Borealis Exhibition. org.

September memories Our family happy hour in September was fun and lively. Entertainment was provided by Memories Times Two. Resident Joyce Ellis’s son, John Ellis, made his debut performing in the newly formed duo. The duo performed catchy songs from the 30s-70s and residents and family members sang along. It was particularly heartwarming to see Joyce beam with pride at her son, John. John even wore a belt that his mom made for him way back when. Residents enjoyed spirits and hors d’oeuvres. In September, we also hosted a Grandparents Day happy hour on Grandparents Day. Classical guitar music was played and refreshments were enjoyed by several visiting family members and friends. It happened to be resident Betty Spence’s 90th birthday, so, of course, the crowd sang to her. Betty was so kind and generous to let us use her beautiful birthday bouquet for our table arrangement, for all to enjoy. Like us on Facebook

Joyce Ellis, joined by her son John Ellis, half of the duo from Memories Times Two.

Resident Marion Cairns joined by her dear friend, Emmy Mccleand. The two friends both hail from Webster Groves and both served in The Missouri House of Representatives District 96.

Bob Sextro and Dot Ebeling always have a good crowd for family happy hour. They have numbers on their side, however. Between the two of them, Bob and Dot have 16 children and 44 grandchildren!

We celebrated September birthdays in style! Residents sang along to music with Charlie and had cake and punch. Dot Ebeling’s family brought a cake in for her 92nd Birthday. We love the dots on the cake and her shirt. A reception was held that was attended by several residents. Happy Birthday! Hilde Messmer and Frank Josse also celebrated their birthdays at our September Birthday Party. Each month our birthday cakes are decorated with the month’s flower and gemstone. Can you guess what September’s cake represents? The Glen at Aberdeen Heights
