Art is Ageless exhibit, reception features local senior artists Since the beginning of time, creative expression has brought joy to both its creators and those who experience their art. The Art is Ageless® program offers senior artists the opportunity to share and display their artwork and reaffirms the agelessness of human creativity. Some have resumed art after putting it aside for a career, others have been creating beautiful pieces throughout their lives, and others never picked up a brush until after they retired, but all are now expressing themselves through art. This month, their works are on display at Aberdeen Village. “It’s inspiring to see the beautiful pieces these seniors have created,” said Suzanne Willey, community relations director. “The joy it brings to them and others is wonderful, and that’s something we want to celebrate and share with the entire Olathe community.” ART, continued on page 2 CEO, continued on page 4

Moving toward completion By Don Wilson, interim chaplain

“Nobody’s perfect!” How many times we’ve heard, and perhaps made, that statement. One of the more recent translations of the Bible presents a fascinating, “new way of thinking” about a verse in the Gospel of Matthew. It is the Common English Bible’s rendering of verse 48 of the 6th chapter. Where Don Wilson older translations used the word “perfect,” the Common interim chaplain English Bible (CEB) uses the word “complete.” The chapter addresses the issue of loving not just one’s neighbor, but also one’s enemies. It also refers to not limiting your love toward only those who love you, and not limiting your greeting of others to your brothers and sisters. As the passage draws to a close, instead of the older “Be ye therefore, perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect,” the CEB says, “Therefore, just as your heavenly Father is complete in showing love to everyone, so also you must be complete.” (Italics added) This strikes me as a much more “attainable” commandment. To work toward achieving “completeness” in the expanding of our love sounds more “inviting.” So if you’ve given up on achieving perfection, would you be willing instead to try instead for completion? Whatever we call the goal, hopefully we can work toward expanding our compassion toward one another.

The Art is Ageless program has been encouraging creativity in seniors for more than 35 years, and is sponsored by Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America (PMMA), which is a nonprofit organization that owns and operates 18 senior living communities in Missouri and Kansas. Each year the organization publishes an Art is Ageless calendar, featuring works by amateur senior artists. Proceeds from the sale of calendars are reinvested into new art programs and opportunities for PMMA residents. Aberdeen Village

Staying in touch with your children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren often means getting used to using some new technologies. How do you use technology to keep up with your family? How has technology made life easier? How has technology kept you close to family and friends who live far away? If you’ve got a story to share about how you’re using technology, contact Community Relations Director Suzanne Willey, and your story could be featured in an upcoming edition of Community Matters.
