Sharing winter memories Chilly winds bring memories of winters long ago, and Stephanie Oehlert, sales and marketing director, has a fun story to share from her youth.
Aberdeen Village honored for achievements Aberdeen Village received a certificate of recognition from Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica for reaching goals in fiscal year 2018, July 1, 2017, through June 30, 2018. The recognition came through PMMA’s Emerald Awards Program, designed to encourage its 17 locations to achieve high levels of resident and employee satisfaction, meet financial goals, build philanthropic support for the organization’s mission and meet marketing goals. There are 11 areas measured for the Emerald Awards. To receive an emerald, a community has to meet its goals in all 11 areas. “We lived in LeSueur, Minn., from when I was 2 until I was 10. That really set my expectation of how much snow you should have in the wintertime for the rest of my life,” Stephanie says. “I have many fond memories of things we did in the snow, but there are a couple that really stand out. Marketing Director Stephanie Oehlert The winter I was 8 years old, we had a particularly bad snow storm. I was spending the night at a friend’s house. It snowed so much that we couldn’t go out the front door. We lost electricity, but my friend’s parents had all kinds of fun activities to keep us busy. Her mom taught us to make butter with a churn. Her Dad helped us build a snow fort that had to be the biggest and best snow fort I have ever helped build to this day. It had several rooms and tunnels. We wanted to live in it! As luck would have it, my friend’s dad drove a snow plow, so when my parents weren’t able to get me, I rode home in the snow plow. That was such a fun couple of days that I will always remember. “Another big snowstorm that really stood out was one when my brother and I went downstairs in the morning to find that our patio doors had blown open and everything in our living room was covered in snow. It was a winter wonderland in our living room! We thought it was the coolest thing ever, but I’m sure my parents didn’t think so. One amazing thing was that my baby sister’s room was on that level of the house and my mom was so worried when we found all of the snow. But, the door to her room was closed. Her room was still nice and toasty warm, and she was fine.”

Feeding hearts and souls Aberdeen Village residents generously donate Twice a year, the residents of Aberdeen Village gather food to donate to Convenant Presbyterian Church. These food drives help ensure that those in the community who need sustenance can find it. The Rev. Bill Walter has helped coordinate these community outreach efforts for years and encourages Aberdeen Village residents to give generously once more during the week of January 27 through February 3. He feels strongly about the need to help others, and Pastor Kirk Perucca of Covenant Presbyterian is glad he does. “I don’t know about you, but I’ve never experienced hunger,” Pastor Kirk said. “I mean real hunger where there wasn’t enough food in the house for us to eat. I can only imagine what it’s like to look in the cupboard or refrigerator and see that you have nothing to eat, nothing to feed yourself or your children.” This is a reality for many, he added, and is something many families are in danger of experiencings. “It may be that you were very sick for two days and missed work, and
