Hip, hip, hooray for our PTA! October is National Physical Therapy Month, and what better time to highlight Physical Therapy Assistant Emily Wallace? “I have worked at Aberdeen Village/ Aegis for about a year and a half. I had just moved here from Indiana with my family,” said Emily. “I have an associate’s degree in health science, and I have worked in long-term care for 11 years with a great interest in aquatic therapy.” Emily decided to pursue physical therapy when she was in middle school and watched her grandmother go through a bilateral knee replacement. “My mother is a nurse practitioner. I always knew I wanted to help people, so after I watched my grandmother go through all that, I knew that was my calling,” said Emily. “My favorite part of my job is watching the light in patients’, and their families’, eyes grow as they watch their loved one progress and get better to be able to go back to their prior level. I love listening to patients tell the stories about their lives and see all the changes over the years and what they had to go through.” PTA, continued on page 2 CEO, continued on page 4

Recipe for a successful career When Laura Brazeal applied for a job at Aberdeen Village more than 14 years ago, she didn’t even realize it was a senior living community. She just knew she needed a job, and once she got here, she discovered it was far more—it was a family.

When she’s not at work, Emily enjoys being with her family. She has a 3-year-old little girl and another on the way very soon! “We love to go to the zoo, park and shop. I am a very familyoriented person, so anything I can do with them is great! I love to travel, but I just don’t get to do so much with little ones.”
“I’ve pretty much grown up here. I started as a dishwasher when I was only 19. I’ve done about every job in the kitchen and am a cook now. I’ve learned so much, and just love the relationships I’ve made with
We’re glad Emily is part of our Aberdeen Village family, and we appreciate all the ways physical therapy professionals help our residents and others! Laura Brazeal

the residents,” said Laura. “Some of the residents were here even before I started. They kind of capture you. They make your experience worthwhile. They teach you a lot of things you normally wouldn’t learn on your own.” When Laura isn’t making delicious food for our residents, she enjoys spending time with her large family and many friends. “I spend a lot of time with my family, especially my two nephews, and I’m very close with a lot of friends, and they all have kids. We’re always hanging out, and of course, they like it when I cook for them!” said Laura. “But work is like a big family, too. Being able to meet people and part of their lives and families is wonderful!” We’re glad Laura chose to “grow up” here with us at Aberdeen Village, and we’re glad she’s part of our family!

I couldn’t believe it. I was so emotional. I even cried because I was so happy and grateful,” said Ida. “I’m in the process of applying to MidAmerica Nazarene University for the accelerated BSN program. I love that I’m doing what I’ve always dreamed of, and that’s helping and caring for other people. I also love my amazing coworkers, and I would like to thank Aberdeen Village for
the opportunity. I really appreciate it!” Amy shares Ida’s enthusiasm for the education award she received. “I became an LPN in June and was a CNA before that,” Amy said. “The educational award will help reimburse me for some of my schooling costs. I’m planning on pursuing my RN in a couple of years, but I want more experience

as an LPN first,” said Amy. “I was surprised and excited to have the assistance, and I enjoy providing the best care possible to a wonderful group of residents. I enjoy the hall I work on because of the nursing skills I get to use and learn more about. I want to thank Aberdeen Village for the opportunity to work here, and our Executive Director Tim Allin for the educational reimbursement. I very much appreciate it!”
