Nelda Richardson celebrates 97 years Nelda Richardson and her family hosted a birthday gathering for Glen residents for her 97th birthday in August. Nelda, pictured with Dr. and Mrs. Donald Richardson, her son and daughterin-law, enjoyed her birthday festivities. The family made sure to include lots of different flowers on the beautiful cake because of Nelda’s love for flowers and fresh air.

Small Business Day delves into interior design Our Small Business Day in August brought us Alexis Cutter, The Domestic Decorator. After studying at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri., Alexis had a 10-year career at Brown Shoe Company in St. Louis. She traveled to China and Europe several times a year, and worked with shoe design, most recently with Dr. Scholl’s. After some thought, Alexis decided to take another skill and passion and work from home, so she could stay with her two small children. Interior design was a passion she had always had, and she turned that into her small business, “Domestic Decorator.” Alexis visited with residents and gave a presentation with several pictures of elegant interior design projects. Residents asked questions and got tips. Sign up to receive our newsletter by email. Message smay2@ pmma.org and ask to have the newsletter delivered to your inbox. It’s that easy!

Bethany Holohan, life enrichment director, asked Alexis what sweet treat she would choose to represent her decorating style, and she chose meringues.. When she designs a room, she wants it to feel “light and airy,” a place you can sit back and breathe and feel comfortable. Residents in attendance were treated to meringues as a favor.

Residents and staff compete in cookie bake-off The Glen had its first cookie bakeoff in August. Residents and staff in all community neighborhoods participated.

Residents in Memory Care helped David Evans, lifestyle coordinator, make chocolate chip cookies. Donna Chickanowsky, resident in independent living, brought sugar cookies. Bethany Holohan, The Glen’s life enrichment director, brought brown butter cookies. Robin Vanderwal, concierge, made truffle cookies. Stephanie Ameis, lifestyle assistant, offered turtle cookies. John and Mary Ellen Vogel received a visit from their son from Arkansas and his family in August. We caught their smiles on their way to a family reunion, which also happened to be Mary Ellen’s birthday!

Jean Moses was joined by her son, Chuck, who lives locally, and grandson, Justin, who was visiting from Charleston, South Carolina. It happened to be her grandson’s birthday, and we are sure he was delighted when The Glen residents serenaded him by singing happy birthday. We know his grandma was! Like us on Facebook

Family happy hour Our August Happy Hour was a great success, with several family members and friends joining residents of The Glen. We enjoyed light jazz vocals by Feyza with classical guitar accompaniment by Aaron Burlbaw. There was shrimp cocktail, craft beer, wine and punch. Our November Family Happy Hour will be at 3 p.m. November 18. We hope to see you all there.

Lucy Bender is surrounded by her family at our Family Happy Hour.

Joe and Rita Seiler were joined by their son, his wife, and his wife’s mother.

Anna Louise Fischer invited her friends to our Family Happy Hour. She refers to these ladies as her “Angels.”

Dot Ebeling and Bob Sextro are all smiles as they were joined by two generations of family.

Joan Murphy, Virginia Binzel and Bethany Holohan pose for a photo op. Virginia was so kind to bring her flowers to decorate our bar. The flowers added the perfect touch. Thanks for sharing!

Harmonious happening Ambassadors of Harmony, one of St. Louis’ premier men’s a-cappella choirs and the four-time international champions of the Barbershop Harmony Society, joined us in August and performed for a packed house in The Glen. The men performed several favorites, told a few jokes and mingled with residents after the

show. We love having them perform! Speaking of jokes, this joke received lots of chuckles and is timely for the coming holiday. Q: Why do a pilgrim’s pants always fall down? A: Because they wear their belt buckle on their hat.

Ambassadors of Harmony sing to a full house in August.

Residents on the road Eleanor Long recently attended the wedding of her grandson Luke Schlafly to Jenner Johnson in Chicago, Illinois on August 25, 2018. The Community Matters newsletter stayed in the suitcase and didn’t make it to the dance floor, but Eleanor certainly enjoyed the trip and seeing her family. Here, Eleanor poses with her granddaughter Beth Heger Brunworth and husband, Joe Brunworth.

A member of the choir shook hands with Frank Josse and John Macke.

Artistic arrangements Residents in skilled care and assisted living are making lovely table arrangements each week for our dining tables. Here, Nelda Richardson, Lifestyles Assistant Allison Kelly, Jean Fogerty, Joan Murphy, Rita Napoli and Eleanor Long create beautiful table arrangements for all to enjoy. Join us for floral arranging each week.

If you are going out of town, or to a family event, make sure to take the Community Matters newsletter with you and send a photo to Bethany Holohan at bholohan@pmma.org.
