Community Matters The Glen at Aberdeen Heights
September 2018
Nurses and CNAs learn new skills In July, the nurses and CNAs in The Glen completed a fun day of learning and continuing education. Skills day was a big success, complete with snacks and prizes. Director of nursing Dawn Gonzalez-Rubio worked hard to make the learning session fun and creative. A representative from Long Term Care Pharmacy was on hand to instruct nurses during the event. Virgina Binzel and Hannah discuss repairs to a jade necklace.
Metal with meaning A recent Small Business Day event brought Hannah Miller, owner of Metal with Meaning, to The Glen. Hannah’s small business is a result of years of experience working with jewelry, and designing, cleaning, consulting and more. In March, Hannah decided to start her own jewelry consultation and repair business. At the presentation, Hannah offered complimentary steam cleaning for jewelry and did small repairs to jewelry residents brought to the presentation. Virginia Binzel brought a jade necklace to be repaired, and since its repair, she can be seen wearing it around Aberdeen Heights.

Hannah also invited residents to ask questions and share stories about their own jewelry. When the subject of engagement rings popped up, an interesting conversation resulted about how proposals and engagement rings have changed over the years. Before moving to St. Louis, Hannah worked at Tiffany’s in the design METAL, continued on page 3

We celebrated August birthdays with cake, punch and music with local singer and piano player Curt Landes. Our own Tony Roldan, front desk concierge, joined Curt on the drums. Tony heard Curt play at a previous engagement at Aberdeen Heights a week before. He really enjoyed the playing and wanted to bring his drums in and play some songs for our Glen birthday party. It made for an extra special musical event. Thanks, Tony!
Children’s book comes to life Mary Alice Lynch, a resident of The Glen, wrote a story more than 30 years ago called “Puffy the Cloud.” This children’s tale taught lessons about kindness and doing good deeds, and until recently, was something only her family had been able to enjoy. But thanks to her granddaughter Danna Lynch’s talent, Mary’s book was brought to life with illustration. Her family had the book published a few years ago, and over the summer, local moms and their children were invited to a book reading event.
Community Matters is published monthly for residents and friends of Aberdeen Heights by Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America Inc., a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Learn more at: PresbyterianManors.org.
Children were encouraged to wear blue and white, and story time was followed by a cloud craft, blue and white cloud-themed snacks, balloons, blue popcorn, and every mom’s favorite … blue punch!

department. When asked what her favorite gemstone to work with was, she said she did not have a favorite. She did share a story about the rarest gem she had worked with: a red emerald. She was employed to create a red emerald ring. The emerald was 1 carat and set with other accent diamonds. The emerald had an inclusion in it that made it very difficult to set. The ring was completed with 18K yellow gold. The price tag for the commissioned
ring was $135,000. When asked if the security was tight, Hannah pointed to her pants. She said that none of her pants have rivets or metal of any kind. If rivets were on them they had to be removed. We thank Hannah for sharing her business and passion for jewelry with us! This was so interesting and fun to see. Learn more about Hannah’s business, Metal with Meaning, at metalwithmeaning.us.
Hannah talks to residents Helen Quante and daughter, Cheryl, along with Virginia Binzel and Eleanor Long about their engagement ring stories.
Family happy hour
Fourth of July
Our July Family Happy Hour was so much fun. The wine, craft beer and shrimp cocktail were especially a hit. The event included instrumental Latin Guitar by Aaron. Our September Family Happy Hour will be on Sunday, September 23.
We did a lot around The Glen to celebrate the holiday. From patriotic sing-alongs to movies, book reviews and trivia. And of course, red, white and blue was the theme for everything. Harmonica player Sandy Weltman brought his world-class harmonica talent, and the Aberdeen Choir, led by Dale Schaffer, joined us for a great patriotic sing-along.
Friends reunite. Old neighbors Hilde Messmer and Joan Murphy catch up. They used to be next door neighbors. Family Happy Hour is a great time to catch up with friends and family you have not seen in a while. Glen resident Bill Branson is joined by wife, Juanita, and his two lovely daughters.

Don Otto and Connie Josse have a good time catching up. Also enjoying a little happy hour fun were Rita Napoli and her daughter Maria in back.
Residents had a lot of family in town for the holiday. Resident Don Behrens was joined by several of his children and grandchildren. Robin Vanderwal, life enrichment assistant, made red, white and blue snow cones. The Glen at Aberdeen Heights

Travelogues and slide presentations We have been to Germany, Costa Rica, Austria, Japan and more in the past few months, thanks to travelogues presented by residents in Aberdeen Heights’ independent living neighborhood. Aberdeen residents Martha Kaelble and Tom Mitchell present monthly travelogues to residents in assisted living and The Glen. In June, Tom presented one on birds of Costa Rica and in July, Martha presented her travelogue on Germany. The Glen recently acquired a slide projector, so if you have traveled and have slides, contact Bethany Holohan, life enrichment director, at 314-909-6059 or bholohan@
pmma.org. We would love to see these wonderful and timeless pictures. If you would like to join Martha and Tom and present your travelogues we would love to hear from you as well.
Tom Mitchell presented his slides on “Birds of Costa Rica” to residents in the assisted living neighborhood.
Martha Kaelble presents her travelogue, “Germany: Backroads and Scenic Sites.” Hilde and Nick Messmer got front row seats. Being from Austria and Hungary, they saw many familiar places.
Residents relish new lunch spots We have tried some new eating establishments lately. In July, residents went to Lester’s in Frontenac and Mellow Mushroom Pizza in Sunset Hills. We also checked out Nathaniel Reid Bakery in Kirkwood. The baker was here earlier this year to give us a presentation for Small Business Day.
contact Bethany Holohan, life enrichment director, at 314-9096059 or bholohan@pmma.org. It has been fun getting out and enjoying the driving and beautiful weather, friendship and different foods.
