Leyvas share love of work, each other

High school sweethearts Gabby and Carlos Leyva have been married for 21 years. While that’s an impressive feat in its own right, the two have also been working together at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor as certified medical assistants for the past four years. While the couple’s love for each other has definitely played a role in the length of their tenure at the community, it also helps that they each really love their jobs. “My job is one of those jobs where you don’t mind being at work,” said Gabby. “Our residents are the ones that bring me back to work every day—along with our family members and our co-workers.” Carlos also attributes his longevity to the friendship and support of his co-workers along with the pride involved in the work itself. “It was not hard for me to decide that I wanted to stay working in this field. At times it was challenging, but those challenges turned out to be the best lessons I could have ever learned or experienced,” said Carlos. “This field has helped me become a better, stronger, wiser family man, and I am proud to help with our mission here at Presbyterian Manor.” LEYVAS - continued on page 2

Veterans share memories, lessons learned from military service

Since its founding, Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor has been home to a long line of brave veterans who have served our country across all branches of the U.S. military. Each of those who has served brings with them a litany of memories and personal lessons that have helped shape their lives. For Nolan Wineinger, who served 20 years in the Air Force as a personnel and administration supervisor, it was the opportunity to see the world that left a lasting impression on his life. During his time in the service, Nolan visited Holland, England, France, Norway, Germany, Denmark and Austria in addition to countless locations throughout the United States. While the past year has definitely been a challenge due to COVID-19, the couple sees a light at the end of the tunnel and are anxiously awaiting a return to normal.

“I look forward to our residents and their families to be able to unite together again,” said Carlos. For those married or single also looking toward a career at the community, Gabby has a little piece of encouragement.

“I would definitely recommend anyone that’s interested to come and work at PMMA, it’s a wonderful place, we have great residents and staff and when you get a job here you become part of a great family as well,” said Gabby. ◆

“I have a wonderful life, I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” said Nolan. “I thank God for my health, my wonderful wife and everything I have got to see and do.”

In addition to providing her with the adventure of a lifetime, Marsha also credits her time in the military with instilling in her the true meaning of honor and honesty.

In addition to Nolan and Marsha, the community is also the home of Gene Brinkman who served in the Army during the Korean War, Jennabelle Crow who served in the Army during World War II, Ed Gilliland who served in the Marines during World War II and Lowell Smith who served in the Army during World War II.

PEOPLE GIVING TO PEOPLE

An update on how gifts are changing lives in PMMA communities

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE A donor's story

We often hear from donors, "I wish I could do more to support the PMMA mission." Many are surprised to discover that through estate planning, they can have a tremendous philanthropic impact on PMMA’s future, while still caring for their own financial needs along the way.

Karen Smith (right), an independent living resident at The Westerly on PMMA’s Wichita campus, plans to give back to the place that has meant so much to her during retirement. Karen made provisions in her will to benefit Wichita Presbyterian Manor.

“When I came here in 2015, they promised I would be cared for, for the rest of my life, even if I ran out of money,” Karen said. “I have saved all my life, but I am not a millionaire, and that security has been a comfort. I decided that leaving my estate to Wichita Presbyterian Manor was a good option. I want to leave anything I have left to someone else who came here with the promise of being cared for, for the rest of their life.”

Karen’s estate planning still leaves her plenty of options while she is living.

“There is not a restriction as to how I spend,” she said. “I started traveling, took a break during the pandemic, and plan to start up again when it is safe. This is a good time in my life.”

Karen, a retired nurse practitioner, began envisioning what she wanted life to be like in retirement while she was still in the throes of her career. After discovering Wichita Presbyterian Manor, she knew it would be the right place to live out the rest of her life.

While many of Karen’s activities were put on hold during the pandemic, she also knew that living at PMMA meant there was help if she needed it. She would be safe and cared for, no matter what.

“I don’t have any children and I have too many nieces and nephews to count,” Karen said. “I didn’t want anyone to have to take care of Aunt Karen. At PMMA, I have independence. Everyone I need is here, everything I need is here.”
