Why you should stop stressing over stress By Jeanne Dorin for Next Avenue

We’ve all heard the bad news. Stress can lead to a panoply of problems, from depression and fatigue to cancer and heart disease, and perhaps, as recent research suggests, premature death. But now comes — at last — news that may bring your anxiety level down a notch or two. According to Sheldon Cohen, a professor of psychology and director of the Laboratory for the Study of Stress, Immunity and Disease at Carnegie Mellon University, we humans actually have quite a bit of resistance and resilience. In his research, Cohen has found that the biggest variable for most people in dealing with stress is the availability of social support systems, which provides the means for individuals to deal with stressors. A meaningful chat with a good pal over a cup of coffee can help reduce stress. “Find something that works for you,” says UCLA geriatric psychiatrist Dr. Helen Lavretsky. “If it’s humor or feeling cozy at home, that’s fine. Joy is essential, Spiritual connections give people another tool to offload their worries.” Copyright©

Focus on education

Tuition program helps take staff to next level Achieving a new degree or certification doesn’t come easy – it takes time, dedication and money. But Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America’s employee education assistance is helping ease the financial burden for staff at Ark City Presbyterian Manor who are motivated to go the next step in their education. “The Presbyterian Manor helps with tuition on diplomas, certificates, etc., that apply to anything in the nursing home,” said Tonya Baker, a quality assurance nurse at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor. “It helps pay for the books or the classes. I know several others, besides me, that have taken advantage of this program.” Tonya was an LPN from 2003 to 2015. With the help of the tuition program, she got her RN license this past February. She has been at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor for seven years.

By Wayne Rector, Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor resident

In the Rocky Mountains of Colorado there are numerous streams and brooks that wind their way down the mountains when the winter snows begin to melt in the spring. I remember fishing in one of those streams a number of years ago. There are two things I distinctly remember about that fishing trip; the first is how small the littler trout was that I caught, and the second is how merry the sound of that brook was as it bubbled its way down the mountain. Wayne Rector

Someone has wisely noted that “the brook would lose its song if God removed the rocks.” Life is pretty much like that isn’t it? Although we may not realize it, the song in our hearts comes from the obstacles and difficulties we have encountered and survived, and from knowing that God in his infinite mercy has helped us to prevail and that we can have his peace for all our days. Let us pray. Gracious God, our Heavenly Father, thank you for your goodness, your love, and your mercy and for being there in difficult times when there seems to be nowhere else to turn. May we ever sing your praises, In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
