Bill Flick keeps creating

For more than 40 years, Bill Flick has been carving swans, blackbirds, quail, dragonflies and just about anything else you can think of on his way to winning numerous awards and gaining regional notoriety. What sets Bill’s work apart is the finishing touches he applies with just a wood burner and a little bit of paint. “The more realistic they look the better,” said Bill. “I even use glass eyes to bring out all the fine points of the subject.” A resident of Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor for six years, Bill has been an active participant in PMMA’s Art is Ageless® program as both a participant and a judge. He originally came to the community thanks to the recommendation of a friend and some personal investigation. “I had a friend recommend the Presbyterian Manor and I took tours at other locations as well. Ark City Presbyterian Manor kept getting better every time I came back to tour,” said Bill. He hasn’t been disappointed.

“I have been able to get everything that I was looking for here,” said Bill. ◆

Imogene Leach celebrates first anniversary It’s been one year since Imogene Leach made her move to Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor—a move that she personally didn’t initiate. “I have three sons and when I had a fall, they decided it would be helpful for me to live somewhere so that I could always get help when I needed it,” said Imogene. “Also, they said it was payback from me disciplining them as children.” However, since making the move, Imogene has found her fellow residents, and members of the staff, to be both welcoming and helpful. “Everyone is friendly here and if I need anything someone is willing and able to assist, they even

help with my medications,” said Imogene. While moving to the community may not have been her idea, she would do it again in a heartbeat and encourages others to do the same. “I would recommend others to live here because it is a nice place where we have fun and get to play bingo, visit with others and enjoy the library—there are lots of perks to living here,” said Imogene. OUR MISSION: To provide quality senior services guided by Christian values.

PMMA Founder’s Day honors its heroes and 72 years of heritage Employees of Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor will observe the founding of PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of MidAmerica) this month as the company salutes its heroes and heritage.

PMMA’s roots go back to 1947. Alice Kalb, a widow from central Kansas, appealed to a Presbyterian Church organization to establish a home for seniors. Her vision laid the foundation for the first Presbyterian Manor community in Newton, Kan., and inspired others to do even more. Through the many decades, PMMA remained true to the spirit of Alice’s vision, providing

quality senior services guided by Christian values.

Each Founder’s Day, staff members re-commit to live our mission by signing the “WE PROMISE” board that lists the pillars to the mission: respecting that seniors retain their rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; assisting residents with specific needs; providing compassionate service; serve as a trusted resource; and, advocating for seniors. “Our nearly 2,000 employees view what they do as a calling,” said Bruce Shogren, president and CEO. “Our dedicated employees make it

possible for us to sustain PMMA’s mission, as well as its heritage. I believe Alice would very proud.” Alice Kalb’s dream has turned into a network of 15 senior living communities and two hospices across Kansas and Missouri. A new senior living community is under development in Colorado Spring. PMMA remains true to its core and mission: to provide quality senior services guided by Christian values. comfortable place to be employed,” said Dorothy.

Her secret? She just really likes what she does.

“Our team really keeps me going; we have a lot of fun here, and when COVID restrictions are lifted we can have even more activities for the staff and residents,” said Dorothy.

“I love my job. Paperwork is something that I enjoy doing, and I like knowing that I am helping our residents and my coworkers,” said Dorothy. But beyond the endless joys of paperwork, Dorothy also credits the people she works with for making the community a place she wants to come back to each and every day. “We have a strong team that works well together, and this is a safe and

It’s that comradery that makes the past 28 years for Dorothy seem less like a job and more like a privilege.

Beyond the additional activities, Dorothy is looking forward to putting the pandemic behind us so residents can finally reunite with their loved ones. “Being around family just brings joy to everyone and I know our residents are looking forward to it,” said Dorothy. ◆
