Living water By Wayne Rector, resident Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor
On our way over to Dexter, when I was young, my mother would always stop at the farm where she was raised and get a drink of water from the well her father had dug years ago. “Papa’s well,” she would call it. In the book of John, chapter 4, the woman at the well asked Jesus if he was greater than her ancestor, Jacob, who had dug the well she was preparing to draw water from. Jesus told her about a different kind of water, “living water,” which only he could give; and those who drank of this water would never thirst again. Jesus was speaking of the Holy Spirit, which believers would receive upon accepting Christ as their Lord and Savior. Those receiving this gift find their feet no longer trudge down the road that leads to death and destruction, but find themselves on a joyful path that leads to life WATER, continued on page 4

Education assistance recipients Three employees at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor will receive assistance to continue their education through Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America’s Employee Education Assistance program. Paige Bates Paige has been employed at Presbyterian Manor for almost four years, serving as a CNA and a CMA in our memory care neighborhood. She recently received an LPN certification and is continuing her education at Butler Community College to become an RN. Paige said the award will help reduce her out-of-pocket costs for her education. She was encouraged to apply for the scholarship program by her aunt Cammy Boone, health services director at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor. Paige plans to complete her RN studies in May 2018. Jaden Jacobs Jaden joined our dining services team three years ago, and she soon became a CNA in our health care neighborhood. She is pursuing a bachelor of science in nursing degree at Pittsburg State University. EDUCATION, continued on page 2

This year’s Cowley County Walk to End Alzheimer’s is Saturday, Sept. 30, in Winfield. Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor has organized a team and is already hard at work raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association. You can support their efforts with two delicious events this month — a hamburger feed and Krispy Kreme donut sales. The team’s goal is to raise $5,000, said Sarah Standerfer, team captain. Sarah said there’s still time to join the Presbyterian Manor team, register a team of your own to walk, or register as an individual. Go to alz.org/walk and click on “Find Your Walk.” There, you can search by state.
The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Since 1989, the Alzheimer’s Association has mobilized millions of Americans to participate in fundraising walks and their efforts to end Alzheimer’s – the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. Last year’s Cowley County walk raised $13,600 overall, and the Presbyterian Manor crew took first place in team fundraising. Let’s make sure our team comes out on top again!
