Dial-A-Devotion The most excellent gift
By Wayne Rector, resident Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor
When I was a small lad, I would greet my grandmother on Christmas day with the greeting “Merry Christmas,” and she would respond, “Christmas Gift.” At the time I thought she was referring to the presents which we exchange at Christmas time. In later life I realized that she was referring to the most excellent gift of all, the one who gives us reason to celebrate – God’s gift of himself to mankind through his son, Jesus Christ. It was a priceless, incomparable gift that will not wear out or lose its luster. It is a life-changing gift which, when accepted, will change the recipient’s life forever, giving joy beyond all measure. As the gift of the birth of our savior was heralded by the angels and received with joy by the shepherds, each Christmas is a replay of that glorious message heard around the world, “Joy to the world! The Lord is come.” Christ came down at that first Christmas and is coming again. Each Christmas is a check mark on heaven’s calendar until He comes again. May you joyfully await that Gift of all Gifts – Emmanuel, God with us.

Honoring our veterans
Thanking all veterans for their service and commitment In 1945,World War II veteran Raymond Weeks had the idea to celebrate all veterans on Nov. 11 (Armistice Day), not just the ones who had served in World War I. He along with then-Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the way to create a nationwide holiday in remembrance of all veterans. With a strong following of supporters who believed as he did,Weeks held the first unofficial Veterans Day in 1947 in his home state of Louisiana. He continued to celebrate Veterans Day every year until his death in 1985. With the unofficial holiday gaining traction around the country, more and more people were celebrating Nov. 11 as a day to recognize all living veterans. A U.S. representative from Emporia, Kan., saw how meaningful and important the day of recognition was to not only veterans but also civilians and launched a campaign to make Veterans Day an official holiday recognized by the federal government. He presented a bill that would redefine Armistice Day as Veterans Day, and on May 26 President Eisenhower, another Kansan, signed the bill into law. A few days later, Congress renamed made Veterans Day an official federal holiday. VETERANS, continued on page 2

We celebrate Veterans Day to honor those living soldiers who once served in defense of our country. It’s a day set aside to say thank you for the courage and sacrifice that all soldiers have shown. Knowing that we have many veterans in our community, we decided to honor them in our own special way. We hosted a brunch to give others a chance to stop in and say thank you to the staff and residents of Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor who have served in the armed forces. We had around 12 veterans join us and honor us with their presence and stories. Veterans, thank you for your service and commitment.

More than 90 residents in the Cowley County area participated in this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s event, which was wrapped up at this past weekend’s ThankYou Celebration event held at the Kansas Bar & Grill in Winfield. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which benefits the Alzheimer’s Association and was held at the end of September at the American Legion in Winfield, unites everyone in a movement to reclaim the future for millions. This year’s Walk
route was through downtown Winfield. “We had a wonderful Walk this year. It was a gorgeous morning and we welcomed 13 teams to the event,” said chairperson Sarah Griggs. Those teams participating along with the Walk’s sponsors raised more than $8,100 to fund Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs. “I was inspired by Cowley County WALK, continued on page 3 Like us on Facebook

home and in Washington, DC and the Association’s support programs and services. KSOK-FM kicked off the Walk event by providing a live remote at this year’s Walk location. In the opening and closing ceremonies the organizing committee recognized a few individuals and one of the teams at the Walk. Sarah Griggs, Rodger Steffan and Amy Powers joined the Champions Club and received a “champions” medal by raising $500 or more individually. Participants were then encouraged to continue collecting donations through to the ThankYou Celebration Party on November 11. The ThankYou Celebration Party was held at the Kansas Bar & Grill in
Winfield. Walk participants enjoyed a relaxing evening with food and drinks. The Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor team was received the 1st Place award for raising over $3,565. Amy Powers was also recognized for raising the most money individually overall with a total of $572. Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. In Kansas alone, there are 51,000 people living with Alzheimer’s. For more information or to make a donation visit alz.org/ walk. Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor
