Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor earns zero-deficiency rating
Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor earned a zero-deficiency survey from the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services following its annual inspection May 22, 2019. This is the sixth time in the past 16 years Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor has received a zero-deficiency rating. “We are so proud of our staff for this outstanding achievement,” said Sarah Griggs, executive director. “We know that their dedication to our mission and to our residents created a deficiency-free community. Every employee impacts the outcome of the survey since regulations affect every job position at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor.” Each year, senior living communities are surveyed by their licensing agency for compliance of regulations established by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services. These regulations, which number in the hundreds, are designed to ensure a standard of care is met. By meeting this standard, senior living communities are able to renew their licenses and continue to provide care. There are 17 major areas assessed, which include quality of care and physical environment. -Rating, continued on page 2
The health care staff and residents celebrated their zero-deficiency survey by having an ice cream sundae party and holding up “zeroes” to represent the number of deficiencies we received.
A community visitor took this book from the Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor library more than two decades ago.
I am returning this book at my husband’s request. This book has traveled with us from Kansas to Virginia, California, North Carolina, Colorado and Arizona. My husband treasures the book, however, the problem is that it isn’t really his book. My husband took this book from Presbyterian Manor over two decades ago when his grandmother was a resident there. He has mentioned many times over the years how he needs to return it, but we have been remiss in following through. So we are now following through and we apologize for taking this book and keeping it in our possession for so long. We hope many people can enjoy it now that it has been returned to its home. ◆ -See related story on page 4

The surveyors look at every aspect of a resident’s life, from dietary choices, to dental care; from frequency of physician visits to ease of access to their mail. “Our goal is to provide great care every day,” Griggs said. “This recognition is tangible proof of our commitment to providing quality senior care and services. The way you want to live is more than a tagline for Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor; it is a culture built on the understanding of compassionate service to seniors—a foundation of trust for families and their loved ones.” The achievement by Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor places the retirement community in the top tier of survey performances in Kansas.
Alpha and Omega By Bill Bowles, chaplain
“To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. “Look, he is coming with the clouds and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all peoples on earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen. “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.’” —Revelations 1:6-8

Neva Bahruth keeps library’s legacy alive When residents Mickey and Bob McClure took over our community’s library, it was disorganized and unwelcoming. Pouring themselves into the project, the McClures quickly turned the library into a place where residents could not only find what they were looking for but enjoy spending time there. The McClures ran the library for several years and when Mickey passed away, her close friend, Neva Bahruth, was asked to take the reins. Four years later, Neva is still ensuring the McClures hard work lives on and continues to benefit current and future residents. “(Mickey and Bob) were responsi-

ble for modernizing the library, and they did a wonderful job. I’m interested in keeping it that way,” said Neva.
Neva works in the library almost every day organizing materials, checking out books and discarding selections no longer needed, but she insists that her work isn’t very time consuming. A resident since 2002, Neva’s responsibilities in the library are just a simple way she gives back to the place she’s happy to call home. “I enjoy living here very much,” said Neva. “I feel safe and secure and have a loving relationship with the employees … I have a lot of real good friends in here. I think Ark City has a Neva Bahruth reads through a book hidden jewel and they don’t know it.” before re-shelving it.
